There's no better place for fresh poke than Fresh Catch.
My mom brought some home when she took my brother, who was visiting from the mainland. And, with one bite of that spicy ahi, I was hooked. I almost demolished the entire container in one sitting (and was quite reluctant to share with anyone else).
So, naturally, the next time my mom and I were in this area of Kaimuki, stopping by Fresh Catch for lunch was a given. We were hoping for a parking space in the small lot, and we were so fortunate as to find one (otherwise, you'll have to hunt for street parking and walk).
Despite there being a short line when we went, we still waited a decent amount of time for our food. My poke bowl was ready really quickly, but my mom's salmon took longer. We ordered our entrees to-go, but I ended up finishing my poke bowl in the eatery.
There are only a few tables available if you want to dine-in, so it's better to get your items for take-out. We ordered take-out because all the tables were full, but one opened up just as my poke bowl was ready. So, I ended up eating my entrée there--it's best fresh!--but my mom got her salmon to go.
Here's what we got:
"California Roll Poke": I was all set to try the "Furikake Ahi Plate" that I heard so much about (and saw so many photos of), but I changed my mind last-minute to get a poke bowl instead. I was curious about the poke selection that had no label in the display case, and the girl working said it was modeled after a California Roll, complete with avocado and furikake on top. This sounded appealing and I got a sample of it ... and with that, I was sold. I opted for that and a scoop of white rice and resolved to get that "Furikake Ahi Plate" during my next visit. The poke was delicious, to say the least. I didn't opt for a huge scoop since I knew I would be having sushi (more raw fish) for dinner, but this was just enough to satisfy me for lunch. The poke tasted fresh and I loved the California Roll-esque flavors. The tobikko on top added the perfect touch, and the textures and flavors were unforgettable. When you order poke bowls, you pay by the pound, so just keep that in mind before going to town on your raw fish order!
"Furikake Salmon": My mom had ordered this plate before, and she liked it so much that she got it again during this trip. This entrée comes with a generous portion of salmon, which is topped with a ridiculously addictive sauce and is served with two scoops of rice topped with furikake. I had a bite of my mom's salmon, which was served nice and hot ... and man, I had to take more than one bite. Whatever sauce is on top the salmon is crazy good and really flavorful! And they certainly don't skimp on the furikake, which gives the fish some extra crunch and saltiness. I highly recommend this dish if you want something lighter (and not completely fried) for lunch or dinner.
"Crab-Stuffed Ahi Roll": This is a Wednesday special that I would definitely want to try one day. I love ahi as it is, but I also love crab ... and this roll seems to feature the best of both worlds. Definitely look forward to trying this entrée one day!
"Furikake Fries": If I'm in the mood to get a side with my entrée--or just want to share with some friends--this would be the first on my list. They seem to be generous with the amount of furikake they include with their entrees, so I'm sure it's no different with these fries. I like thicker-cut fries and adding furikake on top is sure to make them even better!
"Ahi Katsu": In addition to the "Furikake Ahi Plate," I really want to try this "Ahi Katsu." Katsu is one of my favorites, when it comes to local dishes. Being that this entrée consists of fried ahi, I'm curious to try it. I'm interested to see how the batter will look/taste like ... so once I finally get that "Furikake Ahi Plate," this katsu dish is next up on my list. read more
