This place is great for lunch! It's kind of like a hidden gem - the inside of the shop has a lot of Philly pride and has such a home-y/friendly feel. Which is also probably because of how friendly the staff is! Everyone seemed so kind and warm. And they're funny too - see the sign! The Philly cheesesteak and fried pickles were the perfect lunch. A true hole in the wall. We have been wanting to try this place for the longest time due to reviews and the proximity to our house. We are literally the 3rd closest residential street from this place and walking distance. I knew to expect a hole in the wall type set up when I walked in, and it was just that...honestly, and not meaning this to be degrading at all, it felt like a raunchy train or bus station. They have every type of cheesesteak you can imagine and some great sides. The ones that took my order were extremely helpful and nice. I watched everything cooked live and in real time in front of me in the kitchen. I made an order to go that included a clasic #2 cheesesteak with onions, a #12 bbq cheesesteak, an order of fried pickles, and sweet potato fries. Both cheesesteaks were well enjoyed, and the sweet potato fries were excellent. Glad to have tried this place finally. Hooray! My favorite Philly cheese steak place has opened in Carrollton! (It is right next to Pizza Patron on the SW corner of Josey and the Bush.) Life is good! My wife and I tried this location three times in 9 years and I must say, I am always disappointed, so I think this is it for us. Three strikes and you are out. We first tried Fred's Downtown Philly at the Plano Store at 2229 W 15th St. My wife is Vietnamese and is a bread lover (Banh Mi). She fell in love with Philly cheesesteaks that day in 2015. We walked in and the cook is singing Opera. The place is done in Green and White for the Philadelphia Eagles, and you get the only real Philly Cheesesteak in the entire metro area, and we have tried them all. My wife asked why is this so much different than anyone else's Philly? And the lady behind the counter said, "Griddled beef with cheese is easy to do. But a true Philly, is all about the bread. We have our bread flown in from Philadelphia. It is that important." We became fans big time that day. But there is something about this location in Carrollton that always is eschewed. The first time we tried it the AC was out, and the Ice Machine was out of service. So, no cold drinks, the restaurant was not clean, and it was hotter than heck. They had a bad day, I will give them that one, but a smart manager would have stayed closed. The second time we tried it the place was cleaner, but not clean. Even the sidewalk going into the place is nasty. The ice machine was working but the fountain drink server was not and there was no brewed tea. So, no drinks again. Today we walked in, the drink box was completely empty with only bottled water and Sprite left cold. The ice machine / fountain seemed to work but there was a mountain of drinks piled in front of it at Lunch Time, which made it hard to access the fountain at all. And still no iced tea. I don't care if you are trying to duplicate a Philly Restaurant, this is Texas. The next thing to water is Brewed Iced Tea. So inexpensive to have and you make about 98% profit on the sale of it. Worse to me is the fact you are given this big sandwich and fries, and you are issued one napkin per person. There are no napkins / paper towels to be had in the whole Restaurant unless you ask for more at the order pickup counter. Then to add the icing on the cake, the Bread has been changed. My wife tasted it the minute she bit into the Philly Cheesesteak. Even I noticed the difference. They now taste like every other place in town that makes Philly's. I have not tried the old location again in a while. It is not convenient for me since I retired. I will see if they have forsaken the original Philly, by changing the bread. But this location is officially off my list of places to go. It is always a disaster to go here. Three stars, only for the food. Until further notice I recommend the Plano location. read more

I got the mushroom cheesesteak that comes with mush rooms, steak, grilled onion, and cheese then added jalapeños and bell peppers with and order or regular fries. Only thing I'd do differently next time is try the crab fries (Cajun seasoned) and add extra cheese to the cheesesteak. I got the ten inch and wound up eating it all. Prices are reasonable as well. I gotta try the philly toothpicks sometime (fried jalapeño and onion strings). Food came out fresh and pretty quick! I hate to see poor reviews because someone wasn't greeted the way they like. these guys just try to get your order in so they can prep it and you can enjoy it. I personally enjoy rating food at food places not peoples social skills. No complaints here so five stars it is! This is my first trip to Fred's and it was ok. The irony is I lived in Plano when the first one of these was open years ago. Maybe it was just this location but I was unimpressed I'd much rather go fo a good hamburger, bbq sammie or burrito. Real Philly Steaks--- in Texas!! Lunchtime is crowded because this place is super delicious. Seating isn't that great and can get cramped, so I recommend taking it to go. Calling ahead can shave off your wait time although they churn out food very fast. Mushroom, onion & peppers with thinly shaved beef on real Amoroso bread, the 6 inch sub was more than enough for one person. This is as authentic as you can find around here. If you want a good, authentic Philly Cheesesteak, this is the place to go. Big variety of Cheesesteak sandwiches and a decent variety of burgers. The burgers have generous size patties. The cheesestakes have plenty of beef. You have a choice of regular fries or sweet potato fries with a sprinkling of sugar and cinnamon. The dining room is a little dingy but interesting. Well I guess it is about time to quit lurking and actually put up a review about something. So it is not a surprise that I start with a place that a friend of mine is the owner. Fred's is about as good as it gets when it comes to a cheesesteak outside of Philadelphia. I have been going to Fred's for a number of years and have been to many of the locations including the old one back on Inwood (once). For a good cheesesteak you need some good meat, veggies, cheese and the most important is the bread. Fred gets that from Amoroso's in Philly, and you don't get better that that. There are about 20 different cheesesteaks you can get, plus salads, cold subs and burgers. Of course he has some other Philly/ NJ staples like Utz Potato chips, Hank's Sodas and TastyKakes (which are now sold in Texas). Simply put, the food is great, the atmosphere is great and Fred is a good guy, when you catch him. With all the new shops popping open you never know where he will end up. And the Broadstreet with extra hot peppers is the best! read more

The hero/sub bread was so soft and moist, the steak was cooked perfectly and it had the right amount of cheese and mushrooms. I'd definitely get this again. I got an order of fries so my daughter could have some but those were just eh. They were hard and not soft. Nothing special. I will skip the fries next time. I was given this little side cup (1) and I said to Fred, I paid for extra and he said, yea, I put extra in the cup. I tried to tell him what I wanted, (pepper on the sub and on the side) but he said quickly interrupted and said "I got you". I had no problem paying, they weren't listening and I paid the price. You clearly knew I needed or wanted more pepper last when I brought it to your attention and you insisted on giving me a bunch of BS on she didn't ring them up. Come on, turn around and give me some peppers, you have zero ability to understand basic service. Just went there for the first time and if you're looking for a really good fresh philly, this is the place. Bread was soft and slightly chewy which is how it should be. You have to have a good vessel to hold all the yummy cheesiness and meat goodness going on with this sandwich. I had the #2 with added jalapeños and it was off the charts good. Way better than Pat or Gino's could ever hope to be. The owner was super nice and friendly as well. The only reason I don't give him 5 stars was because of the fries. Just ok on that end. This is a cool place! You feel like you are transported to the Northeast when you walk in the door. You instantly hear the clang of the spatula on the flattop and the orders being called out deli style. The decor is authentic. The selection of subs is enormous. Thin-cut fries are great with the seasoning they offer on the table by the pick-up window. As for the sandwich, the BREAD is on-point! The meat and other fillings is right.
