They use a sweet relish and banana peppers in place of a hot pepper relish. It is heavy on pastrami and lacks prosciutto. Bread is soft and chewy, could have used a toasting. Someone probably told them they should add this sandwich to diversify their menu or something, and it was a bad idea. Better off going with a cheesesteak. Okay, I'll admit it; I avoided this place for the longest time because I was thinking to myself that the sandwiches weren't going to be that good. The guy next to me seriously looked like he was going to cry if his number wasn't going to be called soon. I almost (ALMOST) offered him a pickle. Just one. The sandwich was not only a great value (9 bucks for my whole meal) but it was so good. The meat was tender, as was the bread. Even though I waited a good 25 mins (boy, they really do go in sequential order, huh?) it was well worth the wait. I appreciated how you can get your own hot sauce and the napkins on the tables so you don't have to get up. They also had a sign I liked that I was going to photograph (but was afraid of getting pummeled by hungry patrons) that said, "No Microwaves or Heat Lamps Here, All Fresh" or something of the sort. I feel soooo bad! I ordered over the phone and gave my name. When I walked in they greeted me BY NAME "Rachel's here!" Waited for my to-go meal and got in my car. Went through the bags and realized they forgot two kids burgers. I went inside saying the burgers were missing. The cook said he put them in there. They started making new burgers, I went out to my car to put back the bag. Only then did I realize my kids had already grabbed the burgers and were devouring them. I had to go back in with my tail between my legs- MY BAD! I embarrassed that cook in front of the whole restaurant. If it was COVID I would have given him a hug. My kids finished their burgers before we got home and asked for another! I haven't been here since high school (15 years ago) and it's STILL AMAZING. Ordered the #11 vegetarian option. I am extremely underwhelmed. 2 stars based off the traffic it must be good and I can't attest to that because I didn't order their specialty. The price for the amount you get is extremely over priced, the fries were a very small amount and there was hardly any meat on the sandwich, almost all bread. Since it was my first time in, I was asking the lady taking my order what she would suggest, or recommend. I asked about the cheese fries and she was honest and said they were not any good, so I passed on trying them out. The restaurant appeared to be very dirty, The bags of sandwich bread were setting in the janitorial sink near the back in the kitchen, not a good first impression at all - the health inspector might need to pay them a visit and get it cleaned up. I ordered my go to's when I try a new cheese steak place, the Philly Cheese (Whiz wit- cheese steak, smothered in cheese wiz topped with fried onions) and the Hoagie (same as the Philly Cheese just add lettuce and tomatoes! Fred did not disappoint as I crushed 2 of the 10" sandwiches! I will have to try the Schuylkill (steak, chicken, bacon, italian sausage, mozzarella stick, sauteed onions and cheese), the Broadstreet (steak, sauteed onions, mushrooms, banana peppers, jalapenos and cheese) and the Pastrami (steak, sauteed onions, pastrami, fred's house mustard and cheese). Fred's is a great dive restaurant that offeres a huge selection of variety when it comes to philly cheesesteaks. I ordered the pepper cheesesteak with cheez whiz on the side. They don't use the most authentic bread, but it has character for not being Amoroso bread. The sandwich is filling, even at a 6 inch. I don't understand why people would even try to order the liberty bell, a 60 oz sandwich challenge that most people fail. The meat itself is good stuff. Its on the greasy and salty side, but its excusable when the overall taste is great and beefy. They use kraft cheez whiz, which is a good consistency, instead of being runny like water. If you order it on the side, the cheez whiz wont spread around as easily. I think they rely on the heat of the sandwich to bring it to a more spreadable form. Overall, I was quite surprised Fred's is pretty close to the real thing with their sandwiches. Im curious to try their other combinations when Im in the mood. read more

I've been going to Fred's various locations for over 10 years. Whenever anyone asks where they can get a good cheesesteak I recommend Fred's. I lived in Philly for 2 years so I love authentic cheesesteaks. Yesterday I visited the Carrollton location. As I was ordering I noticed they switched the product they use for meat. I get that sometimes businesses have to order different products due to inventory/supplier issues and whatnot. So it was no big deal. This meat wasn't as flavorful as the previous brand though. And the texture seemed a bit off. My biggest issue came with my mozzarella sticks. I ordered them and they came on the tray with my cheesesteak. There was no marinara sauce so I asked for some. The girl I asked just stared at me. Then she looked at my ticket and asked if I ordered marinara sauce because it wasn't on my ticket. I told her that I wasn't informed that I needed to ask for sauce (where else do you go where you have to order marinara sauce). So the girl reaches into the cooler and gets a 2oz cup of marinara sauce and tells me to meet her at the register and proceeds to ring me up for a whopping 38 cents. I was shocked, but I paid for it. The worst part of it is Fred was actually there and witnessed the entire thing and didn't interject. Sad, but I won't be returning. read more
