Went with coworkers for lunch used the drive thru because the lobby was closed. We tell the cashier we have four orders finish the first two orders then he says he can only do two orders at a time and can't do four. He then tells us if we want we can go around the drive thru Line again. We asked him again-why he couldn't do four orders and he proceeded to ignore us. Also they were out of pickles chicken chili and many other items I understand being out of chili but how can a burger place be out of pickles!!! If you like dry overcooked burgers and patty melts then this is the place for you. Patty melt was so dry it was inedible. The burger of the month blue cheese steakhouse burger left me wishing we had just gone to in and out across the street. I would have given this restaurant one star but the brownie concrete was pretty good (surprisingly considering there was literally only one piece of brownie) The restaurant was FREEZING as well. All in all, Freddy's was a terrible experience and we will not be returning to this location (or probably any location) I'll take my fast food dining elsewhere that has more consistency. read more

Freddy's Dead - the nightmare is over. Studying the crime scene, how did Freddy's Frozen Custard die? There are several much better places in Tucson, like Five Guys, In N Out, and Culvers - and I don't even really crave any of those, yet would choose them hands down over Fred. But what I find TRULY amazing about Freddy's is, despite pre-dating many competitors, it's as if this location took the worst it's competition had to offer and made it WORSE... EXHIBIT A - The burger I'm not a fan of Culver's Burger - its flat, always well done (though moist), and just not flavorful. Drop Dead Fred took the same burger and added gristle and a certain choppiness to create something you should never eat. EXHIBIT B - The fries So we should all know by now that In N Out, for being reasonably priced and wildly popular, are equally shameful for offering these crunchy, hollow little matchsticks that they dare to insult France with by calling them French fries. Step aside, boys - here comes Fred with a new and unimproved product, which perfectly uncompliments the burger you are trying to muscle down. EXHIBIT C - The décor For those that have stepped in to a 5 guys, the red and white look, while some might claim is classic and simple, does not appeal to me. Nor does it seem to appeal to the masses, because few places have adopted it. But none of those five guys is named Fred. No sir-ree, check out this unimpressive scheme you get to unenjoy. Though the help was friendly, this is counteracted by the prices being unjustly high for a funeral. Well, if you must pay your respects, I guess drop by one time but don't say I didn't warn you. Otherwise, give your money to any other burger joint you can and be happy that you contributed to the pulse of a business that isn't on this list. read more

Another new entrant in Tucson's burger wars. Their gimmick is especially thin burgers with very crispy edges. I guess if that's your thing, than they're great, but it just didn't do it for me. I tried a single steakburger, and a double patty melt. I didn't find anything particularly offensive about any of the food, but neither did I find a real reason to draw me back. I didn't try the custard, though, so maybe that was foolish of me and I haven't tried the custardy lifeblood of Freddy's. Maybe if I'm in the area and in the mood for something sweet I'll give that a go. read more

freddy's (east side) opened up a while back down the street from culver's and across from in-n-out. i had heard a lot of good things from co-workers about this place and i decided to give it a try. the husband and kid came along with. i wasn't super hungry when we went so the kid and i split a cheeseburger and fries combo. the husband had the hatch green chile burger, which he thoroughly enjoyed. the "steak burger" was pretty thin, and i was slightly disappointed by that. i could pretty much see through it. but the taste was really, really good. (i went again today and got a double to take care of the thinness thing) i like the fact that they offer onion rings, but i reallllllly love the thin cut fries!! i think the fries at burger places are just as important as the burger. if you don't have a good side of french fries....meh! also, the fact that they have fruit punch as an option for fountain drinks gives them a star entirely in itself. i love fruit punch! the customer service provided by the staff is top notch. they will come around and collect your basket or help you clear your table if you're finished with your meal. no table is left messy or dirty. it's not something you see too often at a fast food joint! read more

I was there on Grand Opening, so there was plenty of staff. I got my food fast and right. Hopefully this will last. The burger was a little grainy for my taste, but I think this is what is meant by "STEAKBURGER" so I will look past that. The patties are smashed when grilling, giving them a crispy edge. The pickles are not wimpy dill slices, they are slices but cut length wise. I also had sport peppers on there...hoooweee they are good. Fries are shoestring, makes you just want to eat a handful at a time. They also provide you some seasoning salt and fry sauce, which may be 1000 island or maybe ketchup and mayo. The chili is nice and thick, like hot dog chili should be. None of what some restaurants call homemade when its just a bunch of beans and hamburger with chunky onions. Nor is it a watery snot concoction like Weinerschnitzel. I had a concrete too, it was good. Taste to cost ratio is high with this one. I will be going back. read more

Freddy's is a perfect example of the fact that it's all a matter of opinion. Some don't like the thin, crispy edged burgers. Some do. Some don't like the ultra-thin shoestring fries. Some do. Some like to dip them in the free Freddy's sauce or spice them up with Freddy's seasoned salt. Some, simple ketchup is all you need to doll up your fries. I actually liked my Freddy's original double burger (with mustard, pickles and onion) once I condimentized it with some of Freddy's fry sauce. The meat was nicely seasoned and was thin enough that, next time, I think I may even order the triple, California style - that comes with cheese, lettuce, onion, tomato and Freddy's sauce. I will add pickles, of course. They are a must on a burger for me. I prefer thicker cut fries to shoestring, but that's just me, so maybe next time I order onion rings. Opinions run wild about Freddy's... and burgers, in general, for that matter. I am squarely in the camp that Freddy's is a good addition to Tucson's ever expanding burger scene. read more

It has really gone downhill quick and prices are ridiculous. Think new management, it looks very disorganized and not clean like it use to be. A bunch of teenagers that don't know what they are doing literally are working the front register. The 2 young girls at register called over a manager to help and she did not listen to me at all and gave me opposite of what i wanted. Very well cooked burgers can make a restaurant's reputation grow, but overpriced food can cause patrons to never want to return. Luckily, despite the steep prices here at Freddy's, hey make a damn good burger. This is certainly not a place you eat when you are calorie counting, but what it lacks in healthiness is made up for by a perfectly seasoned and cooked burger patty. I tried the Bacon & Cheese Double Steakburger combo and I was pretty impressed at the care that is placed into a fast food burger. Now, it may or may not be due to the quality of the employees there -- I don't know -- but I was elated with how the burger taste. If I had one tiny gripe, it was that the burger was a tad too greasy, but that's forgivable, mostly because it likely added to the flavor of the burger. The fries were passable, but far from the best I have ever eaten. The service was about what you expect. I did not have one of their frozen custards, nor do I really care to, but the quality of beef they use gives it a stellar taste that makes Freddy's a place to get a satisfying burger for a somewhat steep price, in relative to other fast food joints. read more

Normally I try and stick to reviews of only the good places, but I feel this one needs to be put to pasture. Went there with the wife about a week ago. We live right down the street and the place was always slammin' so I figured "No way could it be bad...right?" Worst $16 I spent at a fast food joint. The burgers? Greasy and tasteless. The fries? I want some DAMN french fries, not shoe string fries. They were crispy but I couldn't taste french fry! The custard? Runny and not like custard at all. If you want a fast burger, stick with Five Guys or Smashburger. If you want Custard on the quick, stick with Culvers. I don't think I'll be giving this place a second try unless it's free. read more

The food tastes good, but I feel like the portions are smaller than other places, and I don't care for the "squashed flat like a pancake" way the burgers are cooked. The fries are very skinny and crisp. The soft drinks are Pepsi products. No diet other than Pepsi and Dr. Pepper. The frozen custard is a great treat. I recommend sharing one if you don't want to pile on the calories. This place has a 50s diner theme and feel to it. I've heard them playing Sirius XM "50s on 5" music to add to the atmosphere. I was browsing yelp trying to find eateries that offer chili cheese fries coz i was craving it like crazy! Then BAM! i found this place so i grabbed my two boys and drove here. My hubby ordered the double combo, son the kids cheeseburger and of course i ordered my chili cheese fries no onion. First glance at our order, it was huge. The fries are plentiful and my son loved it. Chili Cheese fries are delicious and the chili is made just right. The burgers are seasoned right and on a thin side but very tasty. Fries are good and crispy but lighten up on the salt and the fry sauce is very addicting. After we finished the meal we decided to try the custard which is their specialty and they didn't disappoint. The custard is thick and very creamy, different consistency compare to your regular softserve ice cream. We have found a new joint that we will definitely come back to. read more

So I am from the midwest carb heaven awesomeness, we have a place called Steak N Shake and I miss it so. That is until I discovered Freddys! This place reminds me off all that is good and gluttonous about the midwest. Steakburgers (which are very thin and cooked crispy) and shoestring fries! This place has a diner-like atmosphere and I have never had bad service. I have been to both locations in Tucson and will keep coming back. The menu is comprised of burgers, chicken, chicago hot dogs (they try to get 'em right but hey its not chicago), plus many other options. Can you believe they even have a lettuce wrap for those people who go to fast food places to eat kinda healthy?? Options galore plus a dessert menu to make you take a nap after! Id go with a Freddys staple, a steakburger and fries. Make sure to use the fry sauce for an authentic experience. Get a malt while you are at it, they are fab! Food in a basket always tastes better ha ha. The burgers are a bit bigger than the norm and the sides are always big enough for sharing. But remember, its not a 5-star restaurant so dont take it too seriously. Just go to load up on calories and carbs and call it a day. Sometimes the dining room is a bit messy and sometimes the kitchen is a bit slow, but the food makes you smile and think about a sunny afternoon. Random thought --- they now have fried pickles! Anywho, Freddy's Steakburgers is another installment in hamburger stand craze that is stretching across the Old Pueblo. I stopped in for lunch for a steakburger... The restaurant is nice... Peculiar but nice... Old photos of Freddy, a humble Midwest War Hero who came home to spawn a chain of wildly popular restaurants in Kansas... It has a Red and White 50's diner motif...kinda like In and Out and 5 guys... And they sell steakburgers and custard...Custard, kinda like Culvers... So I walked in, was greeted by a friendly cashier and ordered up the #1...felt like a catcher in a baseball game calling for the first pitch... It was quick, easy, $7.77, card swiped, order number given, empty cup handed off and done... In the back of my mind, I thought $7.77? Well, it's a STEAKBURGER so that makes sense. My order was ready in 5 minutes and served in a red plastic basket (Chipotle) with thinly cut fries... I picked up some ketchup and sat down for my meal. I looked at the burger and noticed something odd... On the ends of the patty was something I called "beef coral". Apparently ( and because I was a Freddy's virgin) the steak is pulverized with a mallet to be made very thin then cooked. I removed the coral and took a bite. I could taste while flowery bun, pickle, processed cheese but no meat.... Disappointed. Lesson learned. I won't go back because the burger just didn't appeal to me. The service was courteous and prompt, the fries were delicious, the restaurant is a hodge podge of good aspects of all the other hamburger stands; unfortunately, the burger had me calling out "Where's The Beef?" Absolutely pleased with Freddy's! You would think the fries were something to pass on but believe me-I feel like they are better than others! The cheese curds are to die for and the fry sauce makes the meal. Burgers are big enough for just a single patty but if you prefer more meat then get the double of course. The custard was delish...I got the Nutter butter sandwich but will have to admit it wasn't a nutter buttery as I would have like but it didn't detract from how good all the rest of the food was. Had dinner at this fast food place. I wasn't very hungry so I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich and Kathy orders a single cheeseburger. I ordered a mint shake and Kathy ordered a coke. The cheese sandwich from the children's menus (with the addition of bacon and mustard) was out of sight. Lighted grilled and the cheese dripping off the sides. I would put this in my top 5 best cheese sandwiches from a restaurant. Kathy's cheeseburger was better the average. My mint chocolate shake was very good. Good mixture of mint in the shake. Kathy ordered a bowl of vanilla custard with pecans, whip cream and a cherry on top. She rated the custard on par with the custard you get in Milwaukee. High praise from a custard expert. As a die-hard fan of Freddy's and a french frie addict I am disappointed to write this update. I have to take away a star for the meals we received today. After paying for two large fries, what we received was disappointingly small - certainly not a large. Additionally, the condiments on the burgers seemed smaller and less generous than normal particularly the small pieces of lettuce. The steakburgers here at Freddy's were tasty. They burgers themselves were rather thin so getting a double is like getting a single elsewhere. Still they were tasty. The fries were shoestring fries with plenty of salt. My oldest daughter would have loved them, but for me they were just ok. They had a nice selection of sofa (coke products). I thought I would give the frozen custard a try after I had my burger and fries. I went with a strawberry shake. It was very yummy. It was a very thick shake and they give you a large diameter straw to make it easier to drink the shake For $4 for a 6 ounces it was in a bit of sticker shock. They do run a clean place, there were always people cleaning up after customers as they left the tables. I might go again, but I do not think I will be going for the overpriced custard. read more

I love, love, LOVE Freddy's!! It's one of my favorite places to eat in Tucson. When I was pregnant I begged my in-laws to bring Freddy's with them on the plane when they visited.. that's how serious it is. I had the opportunity to visit Tucson last week, and I got to go again!! First this location is clean, decorated in a 50s theme of red and white, and the service as never left me disappointed. I love the food, the sandwiches are all good! The fried are hot and crispy, but what makes them special is the Freddy's fry sauce & fry seasoning! Delicious! The custard is always smooth, and they have a lot of options to chose from, sundaes & mixers. You can pretty much have frozen custard how ever you may want.
