Came here to pre-order some wife and husband cakes as I was told they are one of the few places if not, only place to do these traditional cookies for weddings. You'll have to order 10 days in advance. While stopping in the shop, I noticed there were newspapers about their famous husband and wife cake. It looks really crappy inside and hidden in a run down plaza but in a few minutes they place was packed and people were lining up outside. They have fresh husband cakes daily and their egg tarts are deliciously sweet not bland. However, their buns were mediocre so I'd only buy the pre-ordered traditional husband wife cakes and egg tarts. read more

Fragrant Bakery - Bakeries Near Me - Scarborough, Ontario

Definition of hidden gem! Tucked behind an indoor food court, sorta dumpy, inexpensive, & specialises in something specific, re: Chinese sweet buns, egg tarts, roll cakes, etc. Like other reviewers have mentioned, this place is really small, re: 1.5 of a Chinese person-wide. Do NOT expect a seating area to enjoy your goods. It's a buy 'n enjoy at home type of place. Baked goods were pretty cheap at $1.40/3 items or $0.55ea, something like that. Yes, buns are smaller than standard T&T size, but I actually preferred this. Something else that I noticed, that I did preferred, was that the buns/cakes weren't too sweet, just a hint of sweetness which was a nice change. All of the items I got were piping hot out of the oven, including the egg tarts which was a real treat! Egg tarts stand out and they do not look or taste like Play Doh food, egg filling is creamy and pastry was flaky. I also got a Green Tea layer cake with red bean and cake was light 'n fluffy, lotsa whole red beans in filling, but cake wasn't very green tea-ish. Still good as it was topped off with fresh whipped cream as opposed to some icing junk. Excellent place for a nostalgic Chinese treat! ***Tip: Buy 6 items to avoid the tax.*** read more

Inside this cramped little Chinese bakery are some wonderful treats! It's a small family run place and everything is made fresh daily. My favourites are their egg tarts, coconut tarts and their amazingly simple but delicious egg white sponge cake. Their roll cakes are really good too and they make a wonderful Japanese-style cheesecake that sells out very fast. I actually prefer the egg tarts here to Lucullus, but it's dangerous for my waistline to come here since I always leave with more delicious goodies than I planned to! If my memory is correct, I believe this is a cash only place. (I can't believe no one else has reviewed this bakery!) read more

Fragrant Bakery - Okay, this pic is awful but it shows the awesome egg white sponge cake and coconut tarts from Fragrant Bakery - Bakeries Near Me - Scarborough, Ontario

Fragrant bakery is a tiny store tucked away in a dodgy old plaza. There is usually a line-up for their baked goods, but it moves along pretty quick. I've tried many of their items throughout the years, and my favorite is still their winter melon pastry (老婆餅). The crust is thin & flaky and it sits over a soft chewy center. I usually opt for their low sugar version as that's already sweet enough for me. Another item that I enjoy is their century egg pastry (皮蛋酥). It has a flaky crust wrapped around a ball of smooth lotus seed paste, and a wedge of gooey century egg in the center. I like that it's not too sweet and the strands of ginger give it a bit of zing. Their egg tarts and coconut peanut mochi are good as well. Mango/coconut red bean pudding is standard. As for their mini buns, they're at good value since you can get three for a little over a dollar. However, I find that they don't have a lot of filling and the bread itself is just okay. And the chocolate cake rolls are subpar. Aside from the color, you can't tell that its chocolate flavored. All in all, 3.5 stars. read more

This is probably the best Chinese bakery in the GTA/Toronto. Truly a hidden gem! the 1 star knock off is due to their poor service. Make sure you know what you want to get BEFORE going inside the tiny store because there's always a line up and there really isn't space for people to go in and out. The service here is VERY poor as they are always busy serving customers. If you ask them a question, they will just ignore you and they never want to explain what is inside their pastry. There are always 2 people working there: One does the cashier, the other packs the pastries into the box. Make sure you don't take the wife pastry or other specialized pastries from the large cooking tray yourself, or else you'll get yelled at by them. When you purchase your items, just tell one of the working staff what you want and then they will pack it for you. It definitely takes a couple of tries for customers to get the hang of things. I'm sure that the people that go back to this bakery, me included, is because of their baked goods. They really need to fix their customer service. Fragrant Bakery is well known for their Wife ($1.40) and Husband pastry ($1.20). There are two kinds of wife pastry: regular sugar or low-sugar. I personally like the low-sugar one more, not because of health reasons, but to me, the flavour is better. They also sell buttery egg tarts, pineapple tarts and coconut tarts. They only make a certain number of them a day and when it is gone, it is gone! Besides the wife pastry, the thing that separates them from other Asian bakeries is that their buns are 1/2-1/3 size of a regular bun; after all, there's no space at the store to make bigger buns. They always have this deal where you if you buy 2-3 of the same kind, it is cheaper. They also have a time sale near the end of the day. It is interesting that every time I go they have different types of buns. I really like their bbq pork and sausage buns. They also have this mochi that is filled with peanuts AND salted preserved egg. It is absolutely delicious! Their rolled cakes are okay. They come in small or regular size. There really isn't anything special about them. I will be back when my wife pastry craving kicks in. read more

Sure, this place is really dingy- the walls are stained a permanent yellow like someone spilled coffee on them, you can only fit like 3 people in the store, and the ceiling leaks everywhere when it rains... BUT none of that matters because their wife cakes are so good. so flaky and I love the filling to crust ratio. It's the thiccest wife cake I've ever had in a good way. Other places make the crust layer too thick and not enough filling. Texture, taste was on point and it was sweet without being too sweet which is perfect for me. The egg tarts were also very good- flakiest crust I've ever had but the bottom was a little burnt. No matter, I shaved off the little bits of burnt part and it was still amazing. My parents liked their thousand year egg pastry too. Will need to come back to try the other offerings! Too bad I live 4.5 hours away. read more

Just alright. Their buns are cheap but super tiny and the taste is a-okay. The store feels a bit sketchy just like the rest of the Evergold Centre mall and it's extremely cramped. Hard to not bump into someone when you are grabbing bakeries from the trays. Based on the reviews their specialty seems to be winter melon pastry. Unfortunately I am not a huge fan of them so this bakery is probably a pass for me. read more

We come here just for their custard tarts whenever we are in the area, one of the best! It's a tiny bakery in a small plaza in Scarborough, but their custard tarts are always hot and fresh (because they constantly sell out) and they have fresh batches made throughout the day. The crust is flakey and buttery, and the custard is deliciously smooth and not too sweet. You need to stop by if you're a fan of custard tarts! read more

Fragrant Bakery - Fresh out of the oven - Bakeries Near Me - Scarborough, Ontario

Some of the best egg tarts you might find around town. I'm by no means an egg tart expert, but this small little bakery has to have some of the better ones. The place here is so small that I've been in walk-in closets that were larger. The narrow little area that you do have to explore is filled with pastries, custards, cakes, and mini sandwiches. You'll have to venture into the plaza as it's not viewable from the outside. Though much of their cakes look good, the only thing we really come here for are the egg tarts and sausage buns. When you come early in the morning, you get that full aroma that fills the entire hall. It's incredible. The buns are warm and you'll be able to see a guy make them out in the back when you glance over. I find those sausage buns so addicting - something about sticking sausages into buns really makes me hungry. My therapist says I have a problem. read more

Been coming here ever since I moved into the neighbourhood in 2001-2002. Their buns are mini-sized which is perfect if you like variety! They replenish popular items often so a lot of times things are still warm from the oven! SO CHEAP TOO. I used always come for the fruit tarts but they stopped making them unless you special order them. The child in me died a little when the lady behind the cash broke the news to me LOL. They're known for their "Lo Pau Bangs" or wife cakes, I never really liked them but every time my friends from Ottawa visit they buy 10+ dozens to bring them. Fair warning if you're going to order so much call in to make sure they're prepared for it or else there's going to be a mob of angry Chinese people cussing under their breath LOL. It gets pretty shoulder to shoulder so be ready to say sorry while bumping into all them grandmas tryna get thru read more

Best bakery in town! Went twice just to satisfy some craving for good egg tart. First time I went, they ran out for the day (5:30pm, yet they close at 7pm). Second time, it just came out crom the oven and there was already a long line-up waiting, about a 15min wait. Super delicious when fresh, still delicious after you heat it up the next day. Fair price and they have a lot of other traditional HK pastries and bakes that you don't fine elsewhere. read more

I noticed this bakery several years ago but did not sample its goodies until today. The goodies used to look expensive as the portions are small. My opinion of this place changed after sampling hot egg tarts, bbq pork buns and coconut buns. Taste was amazingly good. the buns here are always being baked fresh daily throughout the day, a line up is good and fine with me, it means the buns are not sitting there waiting for someone but is always being refilled with fresh ones, My favorite part is that they are all mini sized buns! which means I can have all the flavours I want without overeating! The ladies at the cash are very fast and efficient. the buns are delicious and good amount of filling. well priced and delicious. read more

This bakery has the typical items you would see at a Chinese bakery however the selection is very limited given their small space. The bakery is small and it can feel very tight if there are other customers inside. The egg tarts here are delicious. The filling is so smooth. The pastry is very buttery and flaky. They bake egg tarts very often here since it is a popular bakery for egg tarts. Sometimes the egg tarts are sold out when I come, and I would have to wait a bit for the next batch. But the wait is worth it and I get to have freshly baked egg tarts! In regards to other baked treats, I thought they are just okay. I only come to pick up egg tarts and I normally don't get anything else. If you are ever in the area, come and try their egg tarts! read more

Yummy delicious fresh Chinese baked goods! Mini custard tarts: $0.8each, 5stars; I can finish 3 easily. Everything taste so yummy when they are mini size :) Winter melon cake 老婆餅: $1.1 each, 4.5 stars; the outer layer came off easily so it didn't look as good as at the store but still taste very good. Chicken tart: $1 each, 4.5stars, still taste good after a day or two. Yes, definitely will go back when I'm in the area. read more

Fragrant bakery is one of my favourite chinese bakeries! It has a variety of unique options that are harder to find in other chinese bakeries and they also offer their baked goods in a mini version. I find that if you come later in the day, their popular items run out so if you want a specific item thats popular (i.e egg tarts, mochis [lor mi chi], sweetheart/wife cake) definitely go early in the day. An alternative is to order it prior so you can just go and pick up! I've ordered a dozen mochis for pick up and it was convenient amongst the crowd during the day. My go to favourite is the mini garlic bun..mmm!! super fragrant and also delicious. Definitely worth a try. read more

Egg tarts are $0.90. They run out quickly, so make sure you get there early! They have what is almost like the Chinese equivalent of mochi. It's made from glutinous rice flour, and the outside is covered in coconut shreds. I had the one that was custard on the inside and it was delicious. The mochi part was not too sweet, and it was not dense at all. The custard was smooth and creamy. read more

As far as traditional bakery goes, this place is as good as it gets in the Scarborough/Markham area. They also have some non traditional pastries here, like cake, sausage buns, mango pudding, etc. Their prices are reasonable and they are always packed with people. Their sweet wintermelon pastry is by far the best. I always opt for the low sugar option since I'm not a huge sweets person. I also like their cakes and pastry where its slightly lower in the sweet department and they don't use a lot of cream in their cakes. I love their red bean and green tea cake. They use minimal cream to fold in the red bean so its not as sweet as a lot of other places. There's also another bakery by the same name in another location, they are not affiliated in any way. If you have a gift card make sure to check the location before you attempt to use it. read more

Most times, when I see a line up, I mostly think it is more hype than substance, cough Pandora, cough. Today, I tried out Fragrant bakery and was surprised at the lineup. Luckily the two ladies manning the counter were very efficient. Mango cake $4.50: highly recommended, as per other Yelper. It lives up the hype. It was moist, full of mango flavour. The fruit on the top seemed relatively fresh and it was not full of cream Black sesame Mochi $1: I got the last one for the day. It tasted like black sesame, but I wasn't a huge fan of the custard filling inside. I think that's just a personal preference. Peanut and custard Mochi $0.90 & $0.80: yum! I love the Peanut filling, with a bit of sugar and toasted sesame. It wasn't too sweet. Flaky egg tart: I don't remember the price, but the egg tart is bigger than other bakeries. Plus the Flaky crust was to die for and not full of oil. Thumbs up to this inexpensive but delicious bakery. Just don't go in when you're hungry....... Otherwise, you'll end up buying more than you anticipated. I'll be going back to try their green tea cake. read more

I love Fragrant's egg tarts. I would go so far to say they are the best ones I've had in Toronto. My grandparents and my mother have been long-time fans of their egg tarts. It is only fairly recently (this year) that I found out where they purchased their egg tarts. The egg tarts are always warm, and fresh out of the oven. Fragrant also sells buns, too. They tend to be the "mini" buns. Around $1.20-$1.50 for 3 buns. Buns are alright. Nothing in particular stands out about them. Often, you will have to wait 20-30 mins for fresh egg tarts because they sell out quickly, but it is well worth the wait. The egg centre is the right amount of yellow and not too sweet without any of that weird watery residue that you sometimes see at other bakeries. The egg centre is whole, but fragile and doesn't stick together like jello (again, like some other bakeries). The crust is light, slightly crispy, and flakey like buttered wafer layers. (I believe the price of the egg tarts have gone up to $0.90, but don't take my word for it.) The almond cookies are pretty decent as well. (Perhaps around $1/each?) This is not the HK egg tart that I miss and crave. But, with egg tart crust stuck all over my lips, I would say this is a very decent substitute. Location is inside the plaza behind Yee Hong Centre (old folks' home), and parking is limited. The turn into the plaza is quite near the intersection of Midland and McNicoll. read more

We hunted for this bakery because of the outstanding rating. Upon entrance of the dimly lighted mall, we followed a buttery fragrance, trailed the long hallway and discovered a lineup outside of a tiny bakery. I couldn't believe so many people knew about this very hidden bakery. In my mind, the owners were nuts to open a bakery in this old, dumpy, boarderlined shady looking mall to start with. I couldn't fandom how they survived all these years. And here we found out people not only have heard of it, they are loyal customers. To be honest, the buns are better than average in favours, but smaller than average in size. Buns are sweet, buttery, and soft. They reminded me of the buns from neighbourhood bakeries in villas in Hong Kong. The buns are inexpensive. But once you factor in the smaller size, the deal is just okay. However, l realize that, due to the smaller size, I need to eat two buns to feel not hungry, meaning I can enjoy two varieties of buns in one meal. That I do love very much. In Hong Kong, these are average good buns. In Toronto, these are better than average buns. Nostalgia adds half a point. 4 stars be it. read more

Place is becoming expensive AF. Just their egg tarts have risen price 3 times in 2021 alone and it's only October. Their roll cakes also risen 3 times in 2021. This is crazy. I went back in march and egg tarts were $1.40 each, still expensive compared to chinese bakeries around but they taste good sooo... then I came in July, it's now $1.60. Now in October they are $1.70 EACH. You cannot buy a dozen for less than $20 dollars. That's NUTS. The roll cakes similarly rose drastically in price. The large was $5.50, then $6.50 and now $7.50 as of 2021. Not only that the service does not match the price. I found the 2 old ladies to be rude, always shouting - barking orders. They speak very low class cantonese - hard on the ears like common rude construction/plant laborers. If you say anything about the price they get upset and YELL thinking that method will convince you to A) shut up and B) that they are worth it. NOPE!! I dont take that sh*t. Extremely rude. Once I made my purchase they continued to talk LOUD and RUDE to every other customer saying I dont know what I'm talking about re: price as if that convinces every following customer to agree your overpriced goods are worth 3 increases a year. They even claimed "I was making up wrong info and next time dont buy from here." Sure lady, I was just here 2 weeks ago before your umpteenth price increase! Dont effing LIE. read more

Honestly I uncomfortably walked past this place not knowing what the fuss was about (there was a large line). But I could smell smells of yummyness coming from inside. What a surprise. The place is tight and I did see some raised tempers when I was there.
