If you want no frills, affordable, and simple Chinese bakery items, this is the place to go. Red House sells some of the cheapest egg tarts in the area. They are a bit softer and not as rich as other egg tarts I've had, but they are still delicious and are unbeatable in terms of value. However, if you like a really flaky crust or the hard shell on your egg tart, these are not for you. I also get a milk tea from here every time I visit. Their milk tea isn't as rich, creamy, or sweet as other places, but if you like your tea flavors to be at the forefront, you will enjoy it. They also serve your typical buns, cakes, breads and other items. From my experience, their buns are not as sweet/salty/decadent as other places (like St. Germain), so keep that in mind and you won't be disappointed. One of the BEST egg tarts in GTA. I have been on a hunt for the best egg tarts in GTA. this little hidden gem has one of the best. I've tried SO many egg tarts, from so many bakeries, supermarkets, dim sum places in GTA... I must have tried at least 20 different places... usually the egg tarts at dimsum places are the best because they are fresh and use real butter (ie. dragon boat). this place is at least top 3. Best part is.. its only 1 dollar a piece! It is one of the remaining, places that uses REAL butter. You can actually taste and smell real butter when you bite into the flaky crust. Next time you try an egg tart from somewhere, try to see if you taste it. Many of the establishments including expensive egg tart places dont even use real butter or use very little. For example, Aromaz bakery which charges 1.60+ an egg tart. considered a premium bakery.. had no butter taste in the pastry which means they likely used shortening instead. TnT egg tarts which look fancy, they are also missing the buttery taste. Surprisingly if you ever go to Foodymart at Mccowan and Hwy 7, they have really good egg tarts similar to dim sum places. Anyways, i tried their breads too which are quite decent. But their number one seller has got to be their fresh egg tarts. read more

When I walked into Red House Bakery, the first thing that caught my eyes are the whole display cabinet full of COOKIES!! Those sinfully butter cookies that tastes so good and so bad for you at the same time. With super will power and restrain, I just get one of those flaky shell egg tart...and a HK milk tea (1/2 sugar please). The egg tart has this dark yellowish colour... and yes tons of egg custard flavour without being too sweet. It went well with my strong milk tea, which has an bolder tea taste than others. This little Chinese bakery is hidden on Glen Watford Dr off Sheppard in Scarborough. If you drive by it's so easy to miss it. Looks like cookies and cake are their expertise rather than buns, which are not very visually appealing. I've only had their one egg tart and cake rolls and they were decent. Happen to be in the area and wanted some buns. Basic unassuming store front and interior decore wise, would have driven by unnoticed easily. Many shelves were empty, not sure if it was from items that sold out or they didn't make alot of buns/ other baked goods. Selection of buns was minimal, 6. Bought all six types and egg tarts. Lots of cookie selections but I was not craving them. Hands down the best egg tart and sponge cupcake. Egg tart was moist, flaky and buttery as it should be. The cupcake was perfectly fluffy, moist, light airy and with just a hint of sweetness. Other places makes it too sweet for my preference. The bbq pork bun was pretty great as well. Not super sweet or too red with dye as I have tasted at other bakery establishments. The sweetness is balanced with savory which I prefer. The pinappple bun is so good, normally its not my favorite as its dry and not enough flavour. This was moist and flavour packed, balanced bun to top crust ratio, I devoured it. This Hong Kong style Bakery near Midland ave and Sheppard ave had it's SHARE of business this Labour Day as over the 15 minutes I was there they had non-stop patrons coming in and out getting an assortment of Buns, Cookies, Tarts, Cakes, etc... The first thing I noticed was the sign out front near the doorway that said MILK TEA sourced from China Tea House. I went inside and saw packages of the Tea(1/2 lb/$7.00, 1 lb/$13.00) available for resale, which is COOL because I haven't seen any other place offer HK Milk Tea Leafs for retail purchasing. As my search for Milk Tea continues I noticed the address of China Tea House(8601 Warden Ave. Markham). I got an EGG Tart($0.60) and a Milk Tea($1.20) and grabbed one of the 4 seats from the 2 tables. Egg Tart was still warm and delicious and Milk Tea had good flavour and a bit sweet which the woman asked if I wanted, yup. Red House has been stalwart in this plaza for years even as the stores around it have all changed. While it features most of the traditional buns and pastries, my favourite thing is the butter cookies. They're always splendidly displayed and we eat with our eyes first right? There are butter sandwich cookies, ones topped with sprinkles or dipped in chocolate, and ones with a fruit jelly topper. One the best bakeries I've found to date! All their buns are super inexpensive, and they even have mini versions of typical buns like sausage and pineapple ones, and those are 3 for $1 - definitely an amazing deal! Their egg tarts are perfectly made, especially if you catch them fresh out of the oven, they're even better. Only minor issue is that they use a flaky sort of crust, instead of the cookie kind I prefer, but either way, still amazing! They also have a wide assortment of cookies (some chocolate chip, some almonds, etc), and they are all honestly delicious and perfect for snacking on. They sell them in terms of quarter/half/3 quarter/full pounds. I love their tarts the most though - for $1.2 per piece, the quality of desserts they give is phenomenal. They usually have the chesnut, fruit and jello ones in stock and I tend to prefer the first two. They also have cakes and you can buy the full cake or by the slice. Those tend to be a little more than $2 per slice though. Note though, if you buy more than 6 items (buns or tarts), I do believe it is tax-free! Overall, great bakery and I definitely do go out of my way to visit this place fairly often! read more

I think they put crack in these cookies. Whatever it is, the bakers at Red House Bakery have me eating their cookies for breakfast, in between meals and even before bed, until every last one is GONE. I'll admit, often times, I'm actually the person that's eating the last of these.I refuse to buy these for myself because if my greed went unchecked, I'd actually sit there and eat the whole box. In fact, I don't even buy them; my grandmother keeps picking up a box of them and leaving them on the dining table. I'd be ashamed to know what the true grandmother:me consumption ratio actually is ... These butter cookies are sold by the pound, and although they've jacked up the prices over the years, now at $7.99 per pound, we still keep coming back for more. Cheap cakes. I got a mocha mousse, 8 inches, I believe, for $24 including tax. This also included my customizable message. What I appreciate is that they gave me a piece of paper for me to write my message on. This means that if there are any mistakes, we know exactly who made the mistake. My mocha cake fed 21 people. It had chocolate swirls and icing rosettes. It also tasted like a Chinese style mocha cake. Service-wise, I really appreciated how I got clear, effective service in English. I also really appreciated how my custom message (We will miss you) was first in white icing (on a mocha colored background), then done over in red icing as well (for a fancier effect). I also really liked how they voluntarily put two small hearts under my message, also in this icing style, for a more personal touch. I'll be back for more cake. Side note: They have Swiss rolls filled with assorted fruits and cream for $7. I haven't tried it yet (it's in my fridge now), but it looks delicious! read more

I stumbled upon this small bakery when I was looking for another restaurant and decided to check it out first. It's your typical Hong Kong styled bakery with goods like BBQ buns, pineapple buns, egg tarts, along cookies etc. You get the point. Pineapple buns: I got two of these, one to dine in and one to-go. As I took the first bite, I was surprised that it was still a bit warm (lucky me!) and the bun was incredibly soft. And I loved the top crispy part of their pineapple bun. It was just perfect! Definitely worth a try. Just a tip, if it's only packed in a plastic bag and not a box, you want to be careful not to squish it. Hong Kong styled hot milk tea: I'm not very experienced with these to tell you if it's amazing or decent or very authentic. But aside from that, the tea was flavorful and strong along with the creamy-ness of the milk. Overall, I would definitely drop by for their pineapple buns and hk styled milk tea if I am ever in the area. I gave it four stars since I've only tried two of their items so far. read more

We bought a hot dog/cheese bun; pineapple coconut filled bun; chicken pie; curry puff and some egg tarts. Note that their egg tarts are traditional pastry crust - nice and flaky for those who like this kind of crust; they do not offer a cookie crust which is my preference :( Prices are as expected, and there's no tax if you purchase 6+ items. Service was prompt and they offered the option to bag or box up your goodies. Located in a plaza with numerous unappealing institutions/shops, this bakery would be easy to miss. Nonetheless, the treats that await inside this little bakery is worth the trip. Cakes, cookies, buns, drinks, they have it all! The buns are fairly cheap compared to other known bakeries and based on their great taste, it's a bargain! One of the things I always buy when I visit is a square loaf of milk bread found at the back. 8 slices of deliciousness for less than $2! You can actually taste the hint of creaminess from the milk and when toasted, they make heck of a sandwich or a snack in general. I also love their HK milk tea. Unlike other cups of diluted, watery, bland milk tea I've had elsewhere, theirs is sweet, rich and creamy. I come here for their cookies and rice cake quite often. The cookies are buttery and super fluffy; and they are only $7ish for a pound. Don't worry about the freshness of the cookies even though there are mountainous. They bake twice a week! Their steamed rice cakes are freshly made each day; and they sold out fast. It is made with rice flour and sugar. The cake is sweet, soft and light.
