    Buns on buns

I came here with my sister (who has been dying to come try their egg tarts). We arrived in the parking lot and had to figure out where the storefront was. It is located inside the strip mall. You can go through the foodcourt from the parking lot (there is a side door to get into the small strip). It's definitely a little hole in the wall bakery so they limit how many people can go in at once. We got 6 egg tarts; 2 sponge cakes and 2 wife pastries for a total of $23 in Canadian dollars. We had really good timing because when we arrived they just baked some fresh egg tarts. Funny enough tho, my sister came here because she heard about their egg tarts, but their storefront sign actually highlights their site pastries instead. The egg tarts were to die for. They melt in your mouth. I did not eat it fresh out of the oven because the lady warned out that it was very hot, especially that hot tray. But even after a couple of hours, it was still worth it! The Wife pastries were very good too. Not too sweet, just the right about of buttery ratio and honestly one of the best ones I've ever had. Originally my family was not going to get it, but when I saw the sign outside I knew I HAD to get it and I am so glad I did. The sponge cakes, those were interesting. I was trying to imagine this like those asian "paper cup cupcakes" but it was actually not like that. The concept was similar but the sponge cakes were very dense. The consistency reminded me of Uncle Tetsu's cake. Not bad, but just different that expected. Overall, come check it out if you are nearby! I've heard they run out of things quickly so hopefully you get your hands on some yummy goodies! For your reference, we came on a Monday around noon with only one person ahead of us.

Part 5 of many in my series called eating through the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) TL/DR: literally the best Hong Kong style egg tart I've ever had... I would make the bold claim that it is better than any I've ever had in the Bay Area, Seattle, Portland, Vegas, and NYC! Ambiance: This is not going to be an extravagantly decorated bakery or elegant store front like other establishments. Instead, it's a homely and familiar atmosphere. If you've been to a Hong Kong style bakery, it's exactly what you'd expect. Friendly and fast service. Old Chinese music played in the background and prices written on paper signs with permanent marker. There may be a line but it shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes to get though. I ordered everything in Cantonese. They were also taking orders from patrons in mandarin. Don't forget cash! If you're a fan of Hong Kong style egg tarts this is the place to go! The crust is perfectly laminated with layers and layers of buttery deliciousness. Not only is it flaky, but it provides the perfect exterior crunch. When enjoyed fresh, the middle and most inner layers are soft due to the moisture from the center. The egg component is like that of a flawlessly executed flan, so smooth and delicate. Literally each bite melts in your mouth. The sweetness is the perfected balance of not too sweet but just sweet enough. I highly encourage you to pair this with some warm milk tea. This is how we should all start our days! Tip: We ended up buying a dozen, they do store in the fridge well. If you want to reheat these, pop them in the air fryer for 3-5 minutes on 350F/176C. They were great to enjoy for the next couple of days. Their other buns and goodies looked amazing but we came here specifically for the egg tarts. If you're in the GTA and are craving for some egg tarts you need to come here. Don't look anywhere else.

One of the oldest Chinese bakery in Scarborough that is super tiny but has a lot of popular Chinese buns and pastries. They are well known for their Wife cakes and egg tarts. Wife Cakes are Chinese traditional sweets that are flaky pastry filled with chewy wintermelon fillings. Not my favorite dessert but I'll still get one if I make a visit here! They are always busy and you can smell the freshly baked pastries all the time so you know its fresh.

This bakery has the best sweetheart cakes! Crispy and flaky on the outside with the right amount of chew inside. The black sesame Swiss roll is delicious here too and not overly sweet. We also ordered the Black Forest cake and green tea Swiss roll which my family thought were misses.. I didn't try the Black Forest but as a green tea lover, I really wanted to enjoy the Swiss roll, but it didn't have any tea flavour at all and really tasted like a vanilla Swiss roll with green food colouring. Anyway, I will stick to the sweetheart cakes and black sesame Swiss rolls here. They are worth trying when you're in the area!

Saw some online reviews and comments stating Fragrant has the best or one of the best wife cakes (lo paw bang) In Toronto. I'm not a fan of these cakes as I had a few in my life time in NYC and around the US but the girlfriend is and misses the good ones found in HK. So we visited Fragrant Bakery in search of their wife cakes. Pleasantly found this is a OG bakery with decades of history and it shows because one bite of their wife cake my girlfriend was smiling and one bite for me I enjoyed this wife cake. It is not too sweet, flaky exterior layer, soft moist interior layer, and delicately delicious throughout. What a surprise that I bought a dozen to drive back to NYC with us for friends/family. A must try!

Cute bakery! The workers here are super lovely and sweet! As a big fan of egg tarts, we came here to try their pastry. It was nice and flakey, but not very eggy. I personally like my egg tarts to have a more full-bodied egg taste. However, these egg tarts aren't too sweet, which I personally like. The bottom of the pastry was a bit burnt, but it wasn't too noticeable. Overall, it's a nice bakery. Quite unassuming due to the location, but pretty nice. Note: there are no seats here. The seats are only at the main food court area.

Went to Fragrant Bakery around 12 noon on a Wednesday. As soon as you walk into the mall, and you can smell the fragrance of the bakery Lol. There was a line up of about 6 people. When it was my turn in line, I placed my order for their famous Egg Tarts but of course they were sold out. I was told to come back in five minutes and was given an order number (3). The customer service was great although there was a bit of a language barrier, thankfully one of the kind customers helped with translations as I had questions about how long the custard tarts could stay in the fridge. Overall great experience, I will definitely be coming back for more Egg Tarts!

Small in size but huge in flavor, don't let the size or look of this shop fool you. This place is crowded and not just because of the prices -- inside you'll find excellent Hong Kong style pastries in not-too-sweet preparations. A word of warning though, it gets really crowded really easily and the labeling isn't the best (really helps if you know Chinese). However, the quality of the product really makes these extra inconveniences worth it -- as there's definitely an extra level of execution evident with each bite. Not only are the flavors wonderful, but the textures really shine -- particularly if you are able to get an egg tart or coconut tart fresh from the oven. If you are in the area and enjoy HK style pastries, definitely give this bakery a visit. You'll definitely get a good dose of those traditional flavors.

I bought a couple of buns as a customer since then and I'm hooked! Bun Appetit is located at Commerce Gate. It's located closer to Highway 7. It's around the corner from Kinton Ramen, which I have been to a handful of times during the pandemic to pick up good eats. I found a parking spot steps away from Bun Appetit on a Wednesday evening at around 6:15 pm and backed in to it. It's easier to find parking when it's a weekday, in the afternoon. Bun Appetit's breads are naturally fermented for 168 hours. I liked that all buns and breads are gut-friendly and low on the glycemic index. I'm always interested in lower sugar options. I have sampled these items: - Baguette - Whole wheat walnut vegan bun - Lychee bun - Raisin earl grey bun - Oreo chocolate delight bun - Matcha pistachio pretzel - Whole wheat German pretzel - Yeast loaf with Nutella They were all delicious. They were soft and airy. My favourites were the whole wheat walnut vegan bun and the Oreo chocolate delight bun (also known as the messy hands bun). The former had whole walnuts that were so crunchy and fresh. The bread was chewy and soft. The messy hands bun used dark chocolate. It was also fluffy and soft. It lived up to its name. I had messy fingers just eating a morsel! It has 9 g of sugar, which is practically nothing being fermented. I liked how unique the flavours were. I loved the smell of the lychee bun. I wish it had lychee pieces in it. Instead, it was wine-infused and that flavour overpowered everything. I loved the yeast loaf with Nutella as a dessert option. I nearly picked up a loaf after this event was over! As a parting snack, I got the truffle mushroom one. It was the last one. I love mushrooms. It was super delicious with truffle oil, enoki mushrooms, spinach, garlic, and melted cheeses on top. The bun was soft and perfect. It was such a gourmet bun. I have since returned to get more buns: - Strawberry beetroot - Chocolate arancia The strawberry beetroot bun was fluffy. I decided to cut it in half. To my surprise and joy, it had whole strawberries in it. Wow and yay! I love fruit, but I wasn't expecting so much of it in this bun. I loved it. It was naturally sweet from the strawberries. The beetroot wasn't noticeable in flavour. I feel it added colour to the triangular bun more than anything. The chocolate arancia was equally as unique slicing it in half. This bun had candied orange bits in it. It tasted so good with the chocolate morsels on top and the subtle chocolate flavour in the bun itself. It was delicious. I need to return for more. I have found the buns of my dreams, which sounds odd and funny. It's all true! I paid with a credit card. You can register your phone number to collect points towards goodies. I'll be back. (185)

Didn't realize we had to pre-order for the bigger cakes (we initially planned to stop here for…read morethat) but we ended up grabbing a few of the smaller desserts to try (which turned out great since we got to try multiple ones). The cafe itself is pretty small and cozy so it does get packed when it's busy. Service was quick though. Their drink menu also looked great but we didn't get any (as we already had some drinks before). Would come back and try the drinks next time.

Popped in quickly to grab some desserts for someone's birthday. A cute cafe and pastry shop with…read morewarm finishes. The server was patient with us despite of how busy they were. I got the Hunter (4/5), Dear Hermes (4/5) and Strawberry Hojicha (4/5) desserts. Hunter cake, inspired by K-Pop Demon Hunter, had a blend of creaminess and earthiness from the ube and earl grey. There was also a hint of fruitiness from the blueberry. Dear Hermes cake had distinct flavours of lychee and raspberry tied together on a vanilla cake. The mousse and cream was light and airy. The sweetness was delicate and not too overpowering. Strawberry Hojicha cake had a mild sweetness and slight tanginess from the strawberry. The earthiness and roasted flavour profile of the hojicha tie in really well with the fruitiness of the strawberry. This one was our favourite. I would like to come back and try their matcha as well based on the good reviews I've read.
