My usual mechanic was very busy so I thought of David. I left the car with him and he told me that it would take about 1 1/2 hours. After an hour he called me and said that everything on the car was fine and that whatever my mechanic is doing, he's doing right. One of his mechanic's Chris who was also very nice, told me that the car is in great shape. I asked David how much the check-up on he car was and he said not to worry about it, "No charge!" You can share with them that you are not sure if the car will pass smog and they can try to do a few basic things to gauge right off the bat which we appreciated. Other places may do re-test for free if you do the initial smog check with them (but possibly higher in overall price) so keep that in mind.
