Fonda Maria - Yummy guarache de chorizo con papas. - Mexican Near Me - Downey, California

I'm so upset for what transpired this morning at Fonda Maria. My BLACK husband felt so much disrespect from the Hispanic waiter (late 30s and on the chubby side). From the beginning, there was no "you're welcome" to his "thank yous" and every request made was slowly done, if it got fulfilled. Whereas you have a table full of Hispanics next to us and it's full throttle speed mode to help serve them. My husband requested all rice, no beans. When his food came, it was only the chorizo enchiladas. We waited a few minutes and requested his rice from a younger waiter (probably the chubby man's son). Still, no rice. About 10 minutes later, the chubby waiter comes and asks if everything is ok. I replied "no," and said that we didn't get my husband's rice and we he longer wanted his plate. He was very aggressive and said that my husband asked for no rice or beans (ODD, who goes to a Mexican food restaurant and not get rice or beans). I said no, he said all rice with no beans and that we requested it from the other waiter as well. He took the plate, aggressively, and walked away. Fast forward to getting my bill. Guess what's on it? My husband's food. I addressed it with the woman who brought the bill and she said that since my husband ate half (he didn't, he only had one enchilada while we waited 10+ minutes for his rice), she packed the food and added rice for us to take. The audacity, right? I obviously left the plate. Definitely will not be returning. So sad that people act this way. Even in 2022!! read more

Feel like eating Authentic food from Mexico City, this is the closest thing for authentic food from the city and the region according to regular. The owner is very friendly and speak to the customers. She took the time to explain the menu to me written in Spanish. On this trip, I only tried the tortas. The tortas is very tasting with the right balance of everything. I dislike tortas with over-saturation of beans or veggies-lettuce. Stuffing a Tortas with excess cheap ingredients make less appealing as often found in other similar restaurants. I used a coupon to save money, the owner accepted with open arms. Whenever I am in Downey again with craving of Authentic Mexican food, this will be my first choice. read more

Aaaaall right now the food was good and you get a 10% discount on your meal when you check in, the servings were real nice we had waters and fresh juice also milkshakes so all is offered and all is good. It is a small spot next to a lot of parking with stater brothers right next to it so worry not for parking... I had the rellenas with chicken(mind you I asked for panela cheese not chicken, but they did apologize and gave a discount for that) I had a papaya milkshake that was AMAZING and a vampire veggie and fruit natural juice. All the food was good and the service was nice so all in all it is a good spot if you want bfast all day or shakes and juices. We will return again as the food was real good read more

Small cozy place for a quick bite. I had the chicharrón in salsa and was great choice. The rice and beans came separate and had no flavor. I mixed it with the main dish and problem solved but not the point. The best was my papaya almond smoothie. As far as customer service the servers need to be able to multitask and one thing they were on point was coffee refill. Chips and salsa is given to munch while you seated and need less time in fryer since mine were soaked with oil. read more

Loved everything about this lil family run restaurant. We had the Menudo (large order) and Pozole (small) and Molletes with Chorizo. We left feeling content and full. All very flavorful. So we've been living here in Downey for 6yrs and new about this place but never stop buy to try it, today looked up good burritos and this place came up and has great reviews! So we had there chile verde wet asada burritos and it was really good! Nice and spice beans where good and so was the rice totally coming back to try there menudo. read more

This is not your typical Mexican restaurant you find everywhere; the food here is 100% homemade and 100% authentic. It is ran by the family that owns it and they are super nice. Service may be slow at times, but it is only because they cook everything when you order it. Their green chilaquiles are the best!!! Their menudo is made fresh and it's not greasy at all! My family and I, went to have late breakfast here and came to this place because of their emphasis on AUTHENTIC MEXICAN FOOD. we were really excited to try their "homemade" food. We were sat down, and it was about 6 of us on a table and the waitress lady who might be the owner, brought us a small little thing of chips with an even smaller thing of salsa. Basically everyone had a chip and then we were out. She never asked if we wanted more or anything! The waiting time was very LONG! Needless to say it was pretty empty! My mom and dad had the chilaquiles... Mom's with pollo and dads with huevo. The beans were ok they said but the chilaquiles were soggy and definitely don't taste amazing... They said they were just ok :/ my husband and i ordered tacos and OMG! talk about being skimpy with the meat! King Taco definitely gets the crown for tacos on this one. My sister and brother had french toast and breakfast burrito. Sister didn't really like the french toast since they were super duper greasy! They were literally covered in grease to the point that she didn't want to eat after the first bite. My brother's burrito con huevo y chorizo had more huevo than chorizo! He said it was ok but they added chile when asked not to add chile! Overall, we didn't like the fact that we didn't get enough chips and salsa for a whole family, the waiting time was too much for us. My husband and I, got our food before everyone else's and it was awkward waiting to eat before eveyone else!! The place isnt clean and it is very old fashion... Needless to say when your order is taken using a CALCULATOR and you dont even get a receipt, you know the place needs an update! Food was bland, $$ PRICY $$, and does not stand out, nor it tastes like its homemade. You'd think with the time they made us wait... It would come out tasting delicious and being worth the wait but its not. They need to provide people with enough chips and salsa, drink refills... Authentic Mexican food in Downey. Everything tastes amazing! Service is slow but only because they have 1 server but it's totally worth the wait. Plus I think she's doing a great job taking care of 9 tables. Prob not the best place for larger groups but great for those that are hungry and not in a hurry. Very homemade. I ordered the chilaquiles with salsa verde and chicken. Salsa was smoky and spicy with just the right amount of tanginess. Chicken was not dry. Delightful place with delicious food and wonderful service. I found this tiny place on Yelp. It was on the way to my husband's work. We came in and felt immediately welcome. Even though the menu was all in Spanish and my Spanish is poor at its best, the owner explained everything and was wonderful to all of us, especially my 5 year old daughter. It was two days after my birthday and we had previously gone to a 'highly rated' place in Long Beach to eat and Fonda Maria beat this place hands down. Food was delicious and dessert was scrumptious.
