My party of 3 arrived at FOB kitchen for Oakland restaurant week and saw the small crowd of people waiting outside. We got our names on the waitlist at 6:30pm and were told it's a 30 minute wait. We could've also had a 0 minute wait if we wanted to sit outside, but since it was raining on and off, that was a hard no for us. So we waited. And waited. And waited. About an hour in, we're consistently checking to see where we are in line. There's multiple waitlists! We were wondering why so many people got called before us (parties of 2). Eventually, we figured out they skipped us and made up an excuse. We did not appreciate the attitude and lecture when we were not angry. When we finally sat down, after 1 hour and 45 minutes of waiting, we ordered, and the food came out super fast. Excellent, fast service once we sat down. For our table of 3, we did the $70 Oakland restaurant week special and added a couple other dishes. My favorite was the Kamote, the roasted yellow and purple sweet potato. Was not expecting it to come out like a baked potato, but it was delicious. Special mentions are turon (a favorite), pancit (I love that the noodles were kept long), and the fried chicken. The place itself is very aesthetic with lots of leafy plants everywhere. Without the weekend rush and Oakland restaurant week, maybe it's better? It's been so long since I've had Filipino food, so I was very eager to try FOB Kitchen for the first time over the weekend. This cute restaurant is located in a small plaza with plenty of parking spots in the area. I tried to make reservations ahead of my visit, but it didn't look like the restaurant took reservations. Regardless, we got to FOB Kitchen around 11:30 AM and there was no wait required. FOOD: I started my brunch with the pandan iced coffee, which was absolutely delicious!! It was both sweet and creamy, leaving me satisfied every sip. For food, my table split the Shanghai Lumpia, Pancit Sotanghon, and Tocino Silog. The lumpia skin was sufficiently crunchy, but I felt that the filling was sparse compared to other lumpia dishes I've had. Their pancit was tasty and a great pairing with the lumpia. My absolute favorite was the silog that we ordered!! The meat was so savory, juicy, and well-marinated, which pairs well with the side of rice and veggies. My friend and I visited the FOB Kitchen in Oakland, CA on Thursday, 6/20/24, around 6:30 PM for dinner. We came here to celebrate my birthday. In terms of food, I was able to try Pancit Sotanghon, Shanghai Lumpia, and Pork Adobo with white rice. All of the food was flavorful and palatable. The dishes tasted even better with their homemade hot sauce. I also ordered the Mango Lemonade as my beverage. It was truly fruity, slightly tart, and refreshing. The inside of the restaurant was gorgeous. I loved all of the decor and the overall layout. What made it even more nice was the plants throughout the place. The highlight of my dining experience was being served by Rosa. She was beyond friendly, pleasant, and attentive. When I informed her about my birthday, she brought out one scoop of Ube ice cream with a candle on top. She started to sing "Happy Birthday" and everyone else in the restaurant joined as well. I felt very special, thanks to her lead. She ended the song by giving me a warm hug. Overall, I was amazed by not only the food but also the spectacular, unforgettable hospitality from Rosa. The whole experience was outstanding! Went for lunch with a friend, and we got the pork adobo and the fried chicken silog. The pork adobo broth was very flavorful, and the meat was tender, lean, and generous in portion. I left very full and satisfied. I didn't taste my friend's chicken, but the house-made hot sauce that came with it was incredible, as were the pickled radish slices (takuan). The decor - relaxed and sunny, with lots of lush green plants - made me feel like I was visiting the Philippines again. Had lunch here on a Saturday around 1pm with a group of 12. Luckily our friends had made a reservation for their birthday lunch so getting seated was easy for us. If you are making a reservation for an other group, just know they won't seat you until your entire party has arrived! The servers and staff were very friendly and attentive. Pair it with some of their housemade hot sauce if you want an extra kick in flavor! - Sticky Wings: Wasn't my favorite because the fish sauce was a bit overpowering in the sauce. If you're a fan of that then this dish is for you! - Lechon Kawali: Thought it was going to be thicker pieces and was surprised to see they were smaller/thinner pieces. Nonetheless it was extra crispy and tasted delicious with the sauce. - Fried Chicken: The breading was nicely seasoned and was fried well. It was crispy on the outside and moist/juicy on the inside. We ordered like 4 plates of this, the server was kind enough to make 2 of them dinner portions. - Adobo Rice: Recommend over the regular rice if you are a big adobo fan! I went here with a group of friends for Sunday brunch. The service was fast from getting seated to getting our orders. Our server was very attentive as well. For food, I ordered the longanisa Hash, and we shared an order of Shanghai and pancit. One of my friends ordered the tocino, which I got to taste as well. Overall, the food is good, but the longanisa and tocino are not really authentic The Shanghai and pancit were pretty good. The longanisa hash lacked flavor. The longanisa itself lacked a lot of the garlic flavor, and the potatoes could use more salt. The tocino also lacked that traditional flavor, but the steak was super tender. Very flavorful and perfectly cooked bangus. I like the addition of cherry tomatoes and green onions on top to add some freshness. I appreciate the addition of the side salad with garlic rice. We came here on a rainy day during Restaurant Week and it was not quite the experience I was hoping for. FOB kitchen was a seemingly popular choice and the staff couldn't handle so many people. We were told the wait would be 30-40min. 2 hours later, our name on the waitlist was crossed out. When we informed the host, he proceeded to give us attitude and yelled at us saying he is overwhelmed and claimed he let the other party in because they have children and elderly. Unexpected Gem in Oakland We happened to be in Oakland when we stumbled upon FOB Kitchen and what a find! My wife is Filipino, so I've been lucky enough to enjoy a lot of authentic, homemade Filipino food over the years. That said, FOB Kitchen still managed to impress. Since it was restaurant week, they were offering a pre-fixe menu at $35 per person. It ended up being a great deal given the amount of food. Once again, FOB did not disappoint! This is what we ordered: Shanghai lumpia: always a must and it was so perfectly crisp! Ensalada talong: this blew my mind! The sweet and sour dressing and the ingredients were...I wouldn't have changed a single thing on this. It is hands down one of my favorite dishes on earth! Fried chicken: my kid's favorite and for those who can handle the spice, the creamy sauce on the side is delicious with it. A very cool modern Filipino restaurant on Telegraph in Oakland,CA. It was unexpected that we found this place and came to try them during a weekday. There is private parking but very little spaces and share with other stores so we parked on the street; still you have to be lucky to find parking on the street too as it was full. The restaurant is not too huge. It had high ceilings and Ivy plants all over. Very green and earthy feel too. A big Filipino flag displayed. We did not make reservations but was able to be seated. The restaurant is cozy so I would recommend not coming with a party larger than 4 or 5, otherwise, there may be a significant wait. We ordered a decent spread of food and each dish was fairly decent. My favorites of the night included the nightly special of Filipino Spaghetti and fried chicken and the bistek steak. Thee best Filipino food I've had in a while. Not the "sitting there all day steam-table style" type of food at all! We got the bangus (milkfish) with garlic rice, pancit sotanghon (noodles), crispy chicken skin, and halo halo. Everything tasted so fresh and not greasy. Where do I begin! I'm Filipino and friends have been trying to drag me in for years. I was finally able to stop in, and I can see the hype but I'm not entirely sure I'm sold on the bandwagon just yet. Torta is my favorite but I felt a bit disappointed - the overall portion was small and the eggplant taste is lost. The noodles were probably the best out of the three, and I found sotanghon to be a creative noodle to choose for the menu's pancit. The bangus was pretty good and completed the meal. Liz, who was our wonderful server, suggested we pair it with a red Filipino wine. We opted for the calamansi beer which was great and I also got the regular calamansi juice. Every time I visit FOB Kitchen, I have to do a little dance. Their fried chicken special is by far some of the best fried chicken in Oakland. The pork adobo is so tasty, it makes you do the shimmy as they served this meaty dish with a side of garlic rice. FOB Kitchen has become my favorite restaurant for Filipino food. When I'm craving a little taste of home, this is where I go. The wonderful Chef and staff are very welcoming, easy to talk to, and have great recommendations. The place has a chill vibe, and it's great for dates, brunch, and family dinners. And for the last 5 years we've done all three there. We love bringing our little ones here. While there are many wonderful dishes, their clear favorite is the Halo-Halo for dessert. We've probably eaten almost everything on the menu. And I only say almost because Chef has been known to change it up and add a few things that I might have missed out on. So come hungry, try things that sound interesting, and if you're not sure, ask for a recommendation. Oh, they also have great vegan options. Due to inclement weather conditions and Restaurant Week, FOB Kitchen was struck by the perfect storm on a Saturday evening and essentially overwhelmed. The line management was disorderly and ultimately led to my party getting skipped over after already an hour and a half of waiting. When I pointed it out to staff that we were mistakenly crossed out due to staff not using their own checkbox system, I was told that we were deprioritized for a family with children. Uh, no, let's not lie please. You know how I know? When they tried to transcribe names over to a fresh sheet, we were skipped...again. It's because our name looked crossed out since the circle around the party atop was too tall and the bottom part crossed through our name. I also did not appreciate the lecture on MY lack of patience over this matter. I know the whole situation was stressful for staff but it really did not start the experience off well. Luckily, the food did provide some redemption. My table of 3 shared the restaurant week menu and added a couple extra plates. My favorites of the night was a toss-up between the Pancit Sotanghon and the Kamote which was a roasted yellow sweet potato. I loved that the glass noodles on the pancit were kept in tact and I also really enjoyed the strong soy and garlic flavor on the dish. The yellow sweet potato touched all the right notes from the chewy caramelized skin to the soft, creamy interior. The crispy purple toppings were also very nice as was the drizzle of scallion oil. The garlic sour cream was interesting was the dish had a playfulness to it that was very enjoyable! The fried chicken that we had for our main was surprisingly juicy despite looking a tad bit over fried. In particular I really enjoyed the pickles daikon and radishes on the side when paired with the chicken. Our other dishes including the tofu and mushroom adobo, lumpia, and jicama salad were a bit on the unremarkable side. Dessert was good though! Turon always hits the spot! The powdered sugar dusting was different but it was still nice with the ube ice cream. I still prefer the traditional one slathered in honey. All in all, I think the food deserves a 3.5 or 4, but the initial interaction really pulled it down for this bib gourmand. read more

I've been here twice and one of those times was with my mother who is not an easy to please customer. We ordered the chicken wings each time. They're spicier than they appear. First time, they were hot and delightful. Second time, there was a bit too much sauce and it wasn't hot so it was almost goopy on the wings. This is the only thing I would skip (which sucks because you want good lumpia at a Filipino spot). The pork adobo with garlic rice is a MUST try if you come. Soooo delicious. First time, it was served hot. Second time it was lukewarm. We also ordered the pancit- served lukewarm each time but delicious flavor. We tried the steak dish and the fish dish and they were both delicious. Again- everything was lukewarm but the flavors are perfect. Even the pickled radish garnishes are delicious. The non-alcoholic mango drink is really sweet and bold. I had to water mine down a bit to drink it. We also enjoyed the fried banana dessert. Winner each time! The service is ALWAYS top tier. Birthday dinner delight at best of the best Oakland eatery. Run as fast as you can and get these tasty delights. The pork adobo hits all the notes of childhood memories from my dad's home cooking with an elevation that has you ordering more than one to satisfy your craving. The house made banana sauce (and others) are unmatched.
