Came here because I was craving some filipino food. Found this small restaurant. Parking lot was small and nearby street parking was pretty scarce. Once we got inside the staff was smiling and the decor was lively. There was music playing and overall a very quiant spot. We ordered a few appetizers and entrees. This was more of like filipino fusion. The wings tasted delicious. Crispy and with good flavor. The Lumpias were crunchy on the outside but I would have liked the near to be more cooked. Their bistek had the right flavor with the gravy. They used steak that was cut up medium rare. First time I had eaten it like this instead of thin slices of steak. Very delicious. The sinigan was pretty disappointing. It's always something I order and one of my favorite dishes around. Here it was prepared differently and it was one of our last favorite dishes. If you like champagne, this would be a great drink with you! The palowan sunrise was the best out of the three we got. I loved it, and was def on the sweeter side. Lastly, the Feelin' Myself. A solid 4.5 star restaurant. It's been added to our rotation! We wandered in on a sleepy Wednesday at noon. It wasn't busy at all, and we were seated without a problem. Our hostess was friendly and made sure we knew what all our options were. As a Filipino-American, it can be a tricky business to critique Filipino restaurants. You want something familiar and comforting, but you can't be afraid to let the chefs try something new. FOB Kitchen deftly walks that line. "Silog" is a classic style of Filipino breakfast involving garlic rice, an egg, and one other protein. Having ordered the Tocino Silog breakfast, I was pleased to taste some familiar flavors, but Tocino isn't usually my protein of choice. It can be a bit heavy, and while the longganisa hash was wildly tempting (my husband ordered it), it just wasn't quite what I was looking for. The Adobo fried rice was also a great selection and offered some classic flavors. I'm just bummed that we were all too full to order dessert! Do not mistake me. Once again, FOB did not disappoint! This is what we ordered: Shanghai lumpia: always a must and it was so perfectly crisp! Ensalada talong: this blew my mind! The sweet and sour dressing and the ingredients were...I wouldn't have changed a single thing on this. It is hands down one of my favorite dishes on earth! Fried chicken: my kid's favorite and for those who can handle the spice, the creamy sauce on the side is delicious with it. I've been a fan of FOB Kitchen since the SF days, so I was super excited when Chef J. Dulce made the move to Oakland. Last nite, I took my nieces and nephews out to celebrate my older brother's (visiting from my hometown, Washington DC) golden birthday on the last night of his short long weekend here in the Bay. My family can be critical of Filipino food (whose Filipino family isn't critical of someone else's cooking?), but my familiarity with Chef's cooking style made it a no-brainer to chose this spot to gather. Service: We were greeted by the staff who immediately made us feel like family. Our server (Anna May) didn't miss a beat and she was so patient with us! Food and drinks: Everything was prepared with so much care and the flavors were on point. We chose a few staple proteins (wings, adobo, bangus, bistek, and fried chicken special) and veggie dishes (torta talong, broccoli special, lumpia, pancit, kamote). As always, the Bistek was the table favorite for the proteins. We pretty much ordered a few of each desert and an assortment of beverages (alcohol and non). Wow. Just wow. As a Filipina it was an absolute pleasure to see someone who loves what they do and put that passion into the food. The feel of the restaurant is so much fun, the decor, the plants, the music. We were lucky enough to stop by during restaurant week and we snagged the pre fix menus and boy oh boy was it delectable. We tried so much of the delicious menu. And what stood out was that the food felt LIGHT. Also, recognized as a prestigious "Michelin Bib Gourmand" restaurant consistently. I've eaten at FOB several times. The food here is exceptional and so is the service. One of my favorite items here is the adobo It is different and unique. It's not the one I grew up with, but it is very flavorful and still reminiscent of traditional adobo. Other items I like.. The Chicken Skin (Chicharrón,) Tortang Talong, Egg Plant Salad, Bistek, Pancit, & Lumpia. All the items are also very good, but these ones are my favorite. I say that because the pre-fixe menu was $45/per person, but the vegetarian items on the menu totaled to a little less than $90 two people (yes, I tried to do the math haha). Now, if you order some of the meat dishes, then I think it's worth it. Now onto the food. I'd definitely come back another time because the food was actually really good. Veggie lumpia- the filling was good, but I think because the lumpia was so big it wasn't as crispy as I would have loved. It was actually a little too oily for me, but the dipping sauce was a great pairing. Eggplant Ensenada- really good. I liked the rice cracker topping, gave it a nice crunchy texture Tofu and shroom adobo - wish it had a little bit more mushrooms, but overall very tasty. Pancit sotanghon- the best part of the meal. So we were fortunate enough to experience the pre fixe'd menu & we loved EVERYTHING! My friend doesn't eat meat so we got all the vegetarian options. The shroom & tofu adobo was delicious! The tofu had great texture (not too soft or over cooked) and the base of the adobo itself had a nice blend of what I believe to be coconut milk but it was amazing! I've not had adobo like that & I would order this again! The pancit was PHENOMENAL! It had great chew & texture, but most importantly it was packed with flavor! Considering this had no meat, it was excellent! The veggie lumpia was cooked to perfection. It had such a good crunch on the outside, which was my favorite part. I wasn't in love with the vinegar sauce, I think it could have more depth to the flavor (maybe more fish sauce taste) but that's truly just personal preference. It was very vinegary for my liking but this does not negate from the perfection of the lumpia itself. Turon is one of my all time favorite Filipino desserts & Chef Janice's did not disappoint! It doesn't have the traditional glaze on the outside that most turon's do, but it's topped with powdered sugar & paired with ube ice cream. We came here as a part of our "country of the month" tradition where each month, we choose a country and then go to a restaurant pertaining to our country of choice. Given FOB's stellar reputation and Michelin-recognized status, we were glad to have given it a try. For our appetizers, we ordered the sticky wings, chicken skins and veggie lumpia. We especially loved how flavorful the sticky wings were. The Lumpia did not disappoint, and the chicken skins were surprisingly light, airy and delicious. Okay i put this as a 3-star but really it's a 3.5 star but not good enough to round up. I ordered takeout to feed 4 people and I think the portions here are definitely on the smaller end. We got: 1. Fried chicken - this was a perfect portion for 4 people (1 each) and the crisp held well in the takeout box! 2- Shanghai lumpia - this was a disappointment. It didn't really feel like traditional lumpias which is maybe why they caveat with the word Shanghai? 3. We ate here a few years ago, intending to come back. After all, it's only a ten minute walk from our house. But my husband and I like to cook and there are so many new places to try, so it never happened. But then my daughter was visiting us from Tuscaloosa, Alabama and since her area of expertise in history is American colonialism and her dissertation was on the Philippines, we took her there. For dinner, we shared Tortang Talong, an eggplant omelet, which was amazing, Pancit Sotanghon, glass noodles with veggies, also very delicious, and Tofu and Shroom Adobo, which is the vegetarian version of Pork Adobo. Unexpected Gem in Oakland We happened to be in Oakland when we stumbled upon FOB Kitchen and what a find! My wife is Filipino, so I've been lucky enough to enjoy a lot of authentic, homemade Filipino food over the years. That said, FOB Kitchen still managed to impress. My friend and I visited the FOB Kitchen in Oakland, CA on Thursday, 6/20/24, around 6:30 PM for dinner. We came here to celebrate my birthday. In terms of food, I was able to try Pancit Sotanghon, Shanghai Lumpia, and Pork Adobo with white rice. All of the food was flavorful and palatable. The dishes tasted even better with their homemade hot sauce. I also ordered the Mango Lemonade as my beverage. It was truly fruity, slightly tart, and refreshing. The inside of the restaurant was gorgeous. I loved all of the decor and the overall layout. What made it even more nice was the plants throughout the place. The highlight of my dining experience was being served by Rosa. She was beyond friendly, pleasant, and attentive. When I informed her about my birthday, she brought out one scoop of Ube ice cream with a candle on top. She started to sing "Happy Birthday" and everyone else in the restaurant joined as well. My party of 3 arrived at FOB kitchen for Oakland restaurant week and saw the small crowd of people waiting outside. We got our names on the waitlist at 6:30pm and were told it's a 30 minute wait. We could've also had a 0 minute wait if we wanted to sit outside, but since it was raining on and off, that was a hard no for us. So we waited. And waited. And waited. About an hour in, we're consistently checking to see where we are in line. There's multiple waitlists! We were wondering why so many people got called before us (parties of 2). Eventually, we figured out they skipped us and made up an excuse. We did not appreciate the attitude and lecture when we were not angry. When we finally sat down, after 1 hour and 45 minutes of waiting, we ordered, and the food came out super fast. Excellent, fast service once we sat down. For our table of 3, we did the $70 Oakland restaurant week special and added a couple other dishes. My favorite was the Kamote, the roasted yellow and purple sweet potato. Was not expecting it to come out like a baked potato, but it was delicious. Special mentions are turon (a favorite), pancit (I love that the noodles were kept long), and the fried chicken. The place itself is very aesthetic with lots of leafy plants everywhere. Without the weekend rush and Oakland restaurant week, maybe it's better? I would come back to try more food, but not if there's a waitlist. read more

It's been so long since I've had Filipino food, so I was very eager to try FOB Kitchen for the first time over the weekend. This cute restaurant is located in a small plaza with plenty of parking spots in the area. I tried to make reservations ahead of my visit, but it didn't look like the restaurant took reservations. Regardless, we got to FOB Kitchen around 11:30 AM and there was no wait required. FOOD: I started my brunch with the pandan iced coffee, which was absolutely delicious!! It was both sweet and creamy, leaving me satisfied every sip. For food, my table split the Shanghai Lumpia, Pancit Sotanghon, and Tocino Silog. The lumpia skin was sufficiently crunchy, but I felt that the filling was sparse compared to other lumpia dishes I've had. Their pancit was tasty and a great pairing with the lumpia. My absolute favorite was the silog that we ordered!! The meat was so savory, juicy, and well-marinated, which pairs well with the side of rice and veggies. SERVICE: All the food came out quickly and we were happy with our time here. I'd recommend this as a lunch spot if you're ever in the area! read more
