A true gem - authentic Italian restaurant tucked away in a quaint row home. So glad our friends took us here and finally discovered it! The cozy restaurant is bursting with flavor and reminiscent of the Osterias in Italy. I love how the complementary Tuscan bread comes with olive oil and basil - true pesto. We enjoyed the bread basket, not a crumb was spared. The creamy Burrata with sweet potato puree was divine and paired well with the bread. The plump burrata was so soft and juicy that it melted in my mouth. Hands down the best burrata I've had! The Butternut Squash was another crowd-pleaser. The squash was well seasoned and the goat cheese and greens added nice flavor. The tender Burrata Ravioli with juicy mushrooms smothered in creamy pesto sauce was delicious! The al dente ravioli with creamy cheese filling, tender mushrooms, and basil white sauce blended well together with lots of flavor. Every piece was delightfully devoured leaving a nice clean plate. My guy friends all thoroughly enjoyed their hearty meat pasta dishes as their plates were also left clean. The Tiramisu was tasty, but not a stand-out. We were all stuffed from the bread, apps, and entrees that we didn't save room for dessert. I would skip the tiramisu and go for the Chocolate Bomba next time. The 1/2 price bottle of wine and Wed and Sundays is a steal! We got a delicious bottle of Chianti Classico for $26 (normally $52). The service is attentive and polite. One weird thing to note - the bathroom is on the 2nd floor, above the restaurant. Go upstairs, not downstairs! There's a little bar downstairs in the basement by the same owners but not part of the restaurant (different menus and drinks). I wondered downstairs before climbing up a couple flights of stairs to the restroom - getting those steps in! Definitely make a reservation a week or so in advance. There's only a handful of tables and seating for like 25 people. We were lucky and got a reservation on Super Bowl Sunday a few days in advance (didn't want to painfully watch the underdogs team get defeated by the Pats). My friend and I wanted to try this place out for restaurant week. We arrived a little early so out table wasn't ready yet. We decided to pop downstairs to check out the bar. The stairs were kinds narrow and creepy, we had to walk past the kitchen to get into the bar. To our surprise, the bar was packed and poppin'! We couldn't even find a seat. It was decorated in red ribbons with mini gavels hanging from them. Judging by the giant Nancy Pelosi tree out front, I had an idea of what those might've been about. The bartender was also in red and had picture of him with family and friends along the bar, also with him in red. The host came downstairs to notify us that our table was ready. We followed him upstairs to the main floor which was painted red, with white siding. Because the restaurant had low lighting, the red wasn't as harsh as it sounds. We got one of the window tables so I got a great view of the beautifully decorated tree. I was so excited to get started. I knew what I wanted to start with immediately: Black gnocchi! Then I was stuck on the entree because there were so many great options! I finally decided on the Muscovy Duck Breast because duck breast is always delicious. The server was extremely helpful in helping me decide. He was also funny. I love when I am paired with a server with a personality! When the food came out, it was even better than I had imagined. The plating was beautiful! My phone does not do justice when it comes to the photos. The gnocchi has the perfect texture and chewiness. The sauces in both dishes clung onto the gnocchi well but also paired with the flavors of all the other dishes very well. The duck breast was cooked medium. It was tender and juicy. Even better than I had imagined. I'm embarrassed to say how quickly I had finished both dishes. The server cleared our dishes out of the way and brought dessert. To be honest, I had completely forgotten what that was. I think it was a creme brûlée and a chocolate mousse. They were great but we all know why I really went to Floriana. Floriana isn't just a restaurant in Dupont, it's a community experience! I've loved coming here for their amazing brunches and dinners, but more than anything I loved walking by their festive Kamala & Joe Christmas tree, their cheerful decorations and rainbows around Pride month. So thankful that they stayed strong after a really tough year! Food Gnocchi My favorite food at Floriana is hands-down their gnocchi! Their traditional potato gnocchi with lamb is HEAVEN! Their black gnocchi appetizer with cuttlefish sauce is paradise! Their sweet potato gnocchi with duck is delish! What they all have in common is that when you bite into your fist piece of gnocchi, it's pillowy heaven! The flavors are not overpowering so you can enjoy the gnocchi itself. Highly recommend trying out all three, although the lamb with classic gnocchi is my favorite. Arancini The best flavor award goes to their arancini - hands down! It seemed like they had some yummy truffle sauce in there. Burrata served in a Butternut Squash I mean - I love cheese, I love burrata, but I can't say I've ever had such a beautiful and unique combination to serve the burrata in a little squash. It was cooked to perfection and the creaminess was out of this world. I recommend this one too! Dessert - Tiramisu and Gelato We ordered a slice of tiramisu, which was the softest and creamiest I'd ever had. The cake part was completely soaked in coffee, but it was sweet and without any bitterness. Really well-made. Their gelato flavor that day was lemon, which was light and perfect for a hot day. Definitely worth it! Service Fantastic service! The servers and bussing staff are attentive, refresh your water often and check in to make sure everything is good, without being annoying or making you feel rushed. I felt special and enjoyed the experience a lot. COVID-19 Health & Safety They follow all the requirements and all the staff were wearing masks. I felt like they did a great job spacing out the tables too, so I felt safe dining outdoors in their dining area. Final Verdict Highly recommend this neighborhood staple! There wasn't really an apology on how long it took until I inquired on the status and said it was taking a while. The carry out menu had limited options. I came here for my bfs birthday dinner since he loves some good Italian food. The restaurant is in an old townhouse which gives it a cool old fashioned vibe. The service was great from the moment we walked in - they opened the door when we were walking up and knew our name because of the time of our reservation. Our waiter was great throughout the night as well and was able to answer all of our questions. For food - we got the Arancini for an appetizer which came with 5 large pieces and was delicious. I liked that it had sausage inside and the sauce on the plate was different, had a hint of relish so was almost sweet. They also give you bread and a green garlic sauce which was delicious. For our entrees we got the tortellini mignon and the duck agnolotti. The tortellini was delicious - the sauce was a creamy pink sauce with basil and probably the best part. The tortellini were very large and the stuffing was also great. The duck agnolotti was also good (they were also the largest agnolotti I've seen) but it had an Asian tasting sauce to it which I wasn't expecting. I liked it but probably wouldn't get it again when I was looking for an Italian dish. Finally for wine I usually like merlots so I tried the super Tuscan, which was a blend of merlot, Sangiovese and it was delicious! Ambiance: a super cute, romantically dim lit scene with mostly couples occupying the dining room. Service: absolutely wonderful. All staff members always made sure guests were well taken care of. While we were waiting for our table to get ready, every staff member walking by the host stand made sure we were already being helped. Years ago, we ate at a restaurant - long out of business now and gone - at 1602 17th Street NW. I forget the name and I actually forget the cuisine. What I do remember is that it was a lovely evening. We were eating outside in order to enjoy some rare mild summer weather in Washington DC. However, we continually were disturbed and agitated by the number of rats that were everywhere, including running over our feet under our table. We opened the menu and laughed out loud at the 1st appetizer that was listed - ratatouille!!!! We left shortly thereafter and we NEVER returned to that unnamed restaurant (for obvious reasons). Indeed, we have never gone back to the succeeding restaurants that occupied this same space because the rat incident was just too scary. However, my fantastic and thoughtful niece gave me a gift certificate for Floriana at this same location and I thought I needed to give it a try. The reviews were quite good and, of course, I did not want to disappoint my niece! WOW - how sad for me that I have missed eating at Floriana for all these years! Floriana is a gem of an eatery. I will certainly be coming back to this quaint place that out-performs all of its reviews in my opinion. I do not think I have ever seen a staff so hard working. All of them - repeat - all of them were working their butts off, running around, making sure that glasses were full and orders were taken and people were waited on. Top rewards go to our server Autumn! She was charming, delightful, smart, fast, hard working and a true pleasure to talk to. I enjoyed talking to her as much as I enjoyed talking to my spouse! She was knowledgeable about the menu and gave good descriptions of the menu offerings. Autumn is among the best waitresses I have ever had anywhere. But the food was no slouch either. Even the complimentary bread was very good. Soft and chewy, rustic and flavorful - it held up beautifully to Floriana's own strong and garlic-y version of pesto sauce that it was served with. I started with the beet salad. Great combo of rocket (arugula), granny smith apples, grapefruit slices, light cheese and, of course, beets. The dressing was tangy and bright and really lightened up the ingredients. Well done! My main course was orechiette with sausage, rapini and parmigiano. Very well done. The bitterness of the rapini cut through the fat (oh the delicious fat) of the Italian sausage perfectly. The orechiette pasta was chewy as it should be - a stand alone ingredient in this very good dish! But my spouse won the prize with Floriana's love letter to 17th Street - THE BEST LASAGNE I HAVE EVER HAD. From my mouth to Floriana's ears! This lasagna was divine. So tomato-y - at once sweet, at once meaty and all together just perfect. The depth of flavor has marked my food memory. It was the kind of lasagne that did not hold up after you first cut it - rather, it had enough beautiful sauce that it was a little messy and all the ingredients mixed together to create one final flavor so intense and beautiful - the sum total was BETTER than the individual ingredients inside. Seriously - this was the best lasagne I have ever eaten. I really liked my pasta dish tonight but I sure was jealous of my spouse and his lasagne!!! Never in my life will I hear the word "lasagne" without thinking of Floriana's perfect concoction of Italian cuisine. There is always room for another good restaurant in this town. But Floriana has made it that much harder for another Italian restaurant to break through. I guess the best way I can describe the dishes at Floriana is robust - the flavors are not shy, they are not delicate; they are in your face and not ashamed of it. This place was very intimate. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner on a Friday night. At first, the place was not too busy and it was almost kind of weird, but it filled up pretty quickly. Service was nicely paced and attentive. We started with the fried calamari. It was good and there was a lot. It wasn't my favorite calamari ever, so I would definitely recommend something else for an appetizer. I got the burrata ravioli and my boyfriend got the orechiette. His pasta was fine, but the ravioli I got were amazing! I would easily recommend those. The bread that they served and the pesto was seriously some of the best I've ever had. The pesto was the star of the evening and I would easily go back just to get bread and pesto there. The place is two stories so if you can't get up stairs easily, I would maybe go somewhere else. Some old lady fell on the stairs and blocked the way to get out and they had to call an ambulance so we got stuck there for a long time. Went for dinner with some friends while at a conference. It was a good choice. The waiter was really helpful about making recommendations and they were good choices. We shared the fried brussel sprouts appetizer which was quite good and a large portion. The bread was good and served with a pesto sauce. For dinner I had the shrimp and scallop risotto. I was especially impressed with the scallops that were cooked just write and had a great taste. The risotto was creamy and tasty. Two of our party shared the lasagne which was a large portion and they enjoyed it. One had the Sunday Gravy which had pork belly, meatballs, sausage tomato sauce, ricotta and penne and one had the lamb gnocchi. We all enjoyed our meal. For dessert I had the blueberry cake with lemon curd. It was more like a biscotti than a cake and I would have like more lemon curd which made it delicious. Others had the tiramisu which the waiter recommended and I tasted it-it was delicious. The only downside for me was the noise. When we first got there at 7, it was quite noisy. It's in a former house and fairly tight inside. It was hard to hear the people at the table but it cleared out by the time we finished. Floriana is located on 17th St just a block north of Hank's Oyster Bar. It is in a very old "Smithsonian Castle" look like townhouse. Nice, old and cozy ambiance inside. If you are seated upstairs, you have to climb up a very steep, narrow and old stairway so be prepared! There was a man who just had a hip replacement surgery recently in our group last night and he had a hard time climbing up and down with his cane. Yikes. Anyway, after my second visit which was last night, my impression of Floriana is, atmosphere, ambience and service are nice but the food quality is so so, especially entree pasta and tiramisu. My lasagna with Béchamel didn't taste like it had béchamel in it and tasted like ordinary Americanized lasagna. Butternut squash ravioli was very hard in the bottom. Tiramisu had very little mascarpone mixture and watery. Tasted like it was defrosted. Most of us did not finish the tiramisu. And the noise level is very high upstairs with the low ceiling. For the similarly reasonably priced Italian in the area with quality food, I would recommend Darlington House. read more

Where do I begin with Floriana. The food was...not horrible? The server seemed very confused about how to see us, as we were walk ins. We eventually were seated outside. This proved to be a very, very big mistake. But I'll get to that. First, the food. We had the yellow tomato soup (mediocre) and a salad ( tasteless) along with the peas and burrata (pretty good). We also had a gnocchi, which my partner said was decent, and I had the lasagne, which had a slightly gamy flavor. I've definitely had better Italian, so the food wasn't much to write home about if you've had great Italian food. (Del Grano in McLean is a teeny tiny little place that really knows how to do homemade pasta, if you need something good in the area). The food wasn't awful, it just wasn't amazing. It is actually the reason I gave this place two stars instead of one. Ok, now to the reason I wanted to give this place one star: the rats. Now look, I understand DC is a big city and has rats. Hell, I live here, I see them all the time. But within the space of an hour, my partner and I saw four rats, three of them running around that patio area of the restaurant. One ran between the legs of two diners. Another ran up the steps of the patio and the wide-open door of the restaurant, and the last, which was the size of a small cat, emerged from the patio and trotted along side the sidewalk, eventually disappearing into the shrubbery. This is, in my view, pretty unacceptable. Sure there are rats in DC. But on the patio? Running between your diners legs and feet? Running up the stairs near your restaurant? And they left the door to the restaurant wide open, which doesn't bode well for the inside of the restaurant either. Like I said, I get that DC has a big rat problem. But I've eaten at plenty of other place and while I'll see our rodent friends scurrying around on the sidewalks, I'll rarely see them so bold as to enter and prance around the patios where diners are. It really ruined the whole experience for us. TL;DR, unless you want a view of rodents with mediocre food, I do not recommend. read more

From the greeting at the door to the service of the staff, I can say that Floriana's is all class. The view from either the river-side or the street-side balconies only enhanced the experience. Fine dining with carry out or delivery. "Bat" and Mike did a great job in preparing so many dishes for my family. With over 20 dishes cooked to perfection we enjoyed sharing them and talking about the flavors and ingredients. I think we had more fun trying to think of words to describe the food and what we thought the ingredients were. The owner Bat explained that all the pasta is made fresh every day by a lady who has work there for many years. She is a true master of pasta. The gnocchi was wonderful and the ravioli spot on. The dishes were seasoned perfectly and allows the flavors to come through. One dish that looked strange but was a family favorite was the butternut squash topped with a soft mozzarella lime cheese but much more creamy- like a soft ball of cream. read more

We had an excellent dinner at Floriana. We dined on a Sunday so bottles of wine were half off. We tried the Van Duzen Estate Pinot Gris 2019 which was excellent. Our server was a pro - always checking our wine glasses and adding a bit when down. The antipasto was very generous for two and delicious with the wine. Our pasta dishes were also delicious - Tortelloni Mignonette and Orchiette w sausage. The manager seated us and returned later to check with us on how our dinner was. Very friendly. Amazing food in a very unique space. The restaurant is formerly a residence so it gives a very cozy feel to fine dining. Everything on the menu is spectacular. I especially recommend starting with the burrata. Even though the menu has a lot of options, I've twice gone with the filet mignon. I would definitely recommend it over any other cut of steak they do. I've also had the New York strip and it didn't measure up to the filet. They have an excellent wine list that has a great international section. You can get a great bottle off the list, that will pair nicely with your meal, for under $80. Highly recommend! read more

Worked my way down to the tiny dark basement bar (with six people it was half full). We have been coming here for years for consistently good food and top notch wines but admittedly it has been awhile -so glad we dropped in. The basement is decorated nicely but the atmosphere is different from the restaurant, more casual, a Madonna concert film was playing and there were two other casually dressed couples enjoying wine who had just finished eating.We both had nice t-shirts on and felt welcome. We ordered a dirty dito martini with Blue cheese stuffed olives and a glass of super Tuscan. Both were amazing but I tip my hat to the wine and had a second glass. Note to self: bottles are half off on Sunday and Wednesday and if this glass is any indication you will be spoiled at that price. After enjoying some great bread with a wonderful pesto spread the pasta dishes came out. The Lamb Gnocchi was super flavorful and almost had too much gnocchi so although good we may get something else next time. And there will be a next time because the other pasta dish - I ordered without too much thought - was an absolute standout, the duck carbonara pasta. The noodles a perfect Al dente, the duck prosciutto to die for...and the creamy sauce with the right amount of pepper just pulls everything together perfectly. I was absolutely blown away by the simplicity and the flavors. If you are ever doubting food's ability to improve your mood give this wonderful duck carbonara a try--you'll fall in love! Came in for restaurant week and had a fabulous experience. First, all of the courses are from their normal menu and are full portion so bonus points there! We ordered the calamari fritti, mussels, lamb tenderloin, Sunday gravy, berry cobbler and the chocolate mousse. I found the mussels a bit lacking in seasoning and too much on the rosemary flavor to the point it overpowered everything for me. The chocolate mousse was also not very tasty and had a grainy texture that I didn't care for. What was outstanding were the two entrees, namely the lamb tenderloin which was cooked to an absolute perfection. The meat just completely melted into your mouth. It was also dressed with mint and a tomato vinaigrette, which paired so well with lamb. The Sunday gravy was also delicious, although very heavy. i'm glad we ended up getting these two entrees versus two pasta dishes because this was a hearty dish. Wow. We were looking for a "big dinner" While visiting DC, and we studied the reviews and found this gem. First, our waiter, Michael, is a star. Tons of great recommendations based on asking questions and listening. Didn't hurt that we share a Chicago history... his partner, Blanca, was also more than attentive and très gentille! The food: appetizers we tried - Brussels sprouts, pan fried with pancetta, which we always order and these were top tier; black gnocchi in an indescribably delicious sauce. For mains the bride did their must try house lasagna which was as described - bechamel an interesting and excellent idea; daughter did a mignon tortelloni that we all kept stealing - tomato cream sauce was perfect; and Dad did the scallop/shrimp risotto with truffle oil that took it over the top. Wine and cocktail list is deep - the bride did an oakey Franciscan Chardonnay and I did a rye Manhattan on Michael's wise recommendation. Also, Michael brought us a delicious sample of the butternut squash/Gorgonzola ravioli which was a delightful surprise! I thought my recent visit was the first, then my friend reminded me we'd been here for my post-engagement brunch like 5 years ago lol. I don't remember that visit because I was on an emotional high, but this one I won't forget. It was a bit too hot for the patio, so we sat in the dining room on the main level. Not what we expected based on people's comments. The menu is very limited, no kids menu is available so we had to pay $19 for a plate of spaghetti for a nine year old. My friend and I were craving Italian food and decided to give this place a try based on its reviews, photos and menu options. We were definitely impressed and glad we decided to give it a try! Overall, my experience was great. The service was really good and on point. The place itself was somewhat relaxing (although at first it was a little creepy with the red walls, dim lights but we just prayed and got over it, lol). For our appetizer, we ordered the Arancini. It was my first time trying it and it was ok but not a fav. For dinner, we both ordered the lasagna and let's just say it didn't disappoint. It was well flavored, cooked well and not dry! The portion size was huge and more than enough. I am going to return to this restaurant and I recommend that you try it as well! :) read more

Excellent food and perfect service! We tried the gnocchi appetizer which was absolutely delicious especially when paired with their bread/pesto. In terms of entrees, the orrichiette is really tasty (the pork belly really pushes the dish over the edge from good to great) and the portion size was great value for the money. City Favorite: Italian Food I don't think there is any other spots comparable to how much I enjoy this Italian spot. The atmosphere is everything. This places is settled up the stairs and throughout one floor of a very large, and very old home in DuPont. You are thrust into an intimate or friendly setting and you really only have space to navigate for what is necessary. Sit down, have a glass of wine and hope that you're their during restaurant week so that you can get a little taste of everything. I've broken up with the same boyfriend twice now during restaurant week at this place and we stayed together because I'm actually just a drama queen. My point is that this spot can be very friendly to LGBTQIA people on dates or needing some intimate space. Enjoy, and get the gnocchi. It's obvi to die for. read more

An absolutely amazing meal from start to finish! Me and my husband came here when in town to celebrate our anniversary and we were both happy we did. This place is super romantic with candles on the tables and a dimly lit dining area. The restaurant is a converted historic house which is super neat but just be careful on the stairwells since they are older and don't have great handrails. The staff here were really great. They made us feel comfortable and were helpful with suggestions on what to order. The owner even came and chatted with us for a bit. We each ordered a glass of wine which was brought out with delicious bread. We went with the calamari for our appetizer and let me tell you, it changed my mind completely about calamari. Normally I do like it but I LOVED this calamari. For entrees my husband got the Sunday gravy and I got the lamb gnocchi. The gnocchi was to die for! The lamb was super tender and the sauce paired so well with it. The ricotta offered a nice creamy element and really upped the decadence of the dish. The dishes were a great size for the price, quality of food, and atmosphere. We were both so stuffed but we ordered the tiramisu to go and our waitress gave it to us without charge for our anniversary. It was delicious and the perfect ending to an overall wonderful evening. read more

Went here for restaurant week and it did not disappoint. Tried the black gnocchi, buratta, and calamari for apps and they were all delicious. I got the tortellini mignon as my entre which was great, and then chocolate mousse for dessert. Serving staff was super attentive and the service was great (bread kept on coming). Floriana is one of the best Italian restaurants in town! Stepping into the restaurant feels like walking into a quaint, warm and welcoming home. Dimly lit with bright red walls, it has a romantic vibe as well. They consistently offer one of the best restaurant week deals in town, offering selections from the entire menu. Highlights from this time: -Arancini - packed with flavor of saffron and Parmigiano, this is the best I have had. It is in the style of risotto Milanese, in arancini form! -Ahi tuna - seared perfectly, with delicious caramelized onions, asparagus and red pepper sauce. Reminds me of this delicious tuna dish I had in Sicily -Ravioli di zucca - I had a taste of this and absolutely loved it, the taste of fresh butternut squash and walnuts permeate -Bread with pesto - reminds me of the aromatic pesto I enjoyed in Cinque Terre.
