I have, to be honest here. I do not like their food. I 've been here 4-5 times and I just don't like it. I do however like the environment and the staff is always nice and welcoming. They use a lot of organic ingredients and their pizza is made in a big oven right front of you which make it fun to watch. This is one of the occasion when I have to use the "is not you, is me". Because my kids and their friend LOVE to eat here. So based on my kid's feedback and all the other good things going on in this place I have to give them 5 stars. They even have gluten free on the menu. And is a very kid/family friendly place. Tip: Flat bread is always full so if you don't want to be waiting 20-40 minutes for a table call ahead and let them know you are coming. read more

Ok so growing up in the northeastern NY/NJ area means that I may catch a hook in the mouth for this review but its a necessary evil, here it goes... The Flatbread company in Amesbury MA may just be the best pizza I have ever had in my life. Yeah I said it.. MY LIFE... This review comes a number of years too late as I happened to be working in the area on a project in nearby Newbury Port and was craving some good A'PIZZ... Our hosts told us that he had just the place in mind. My immediate thoughts where "Great..here we go, sub-par pizza with that annoying Massachusetts accent mangling all my favorite Italian words." Setting my expectations for disappointment, I decided to make my way to the red checkerboard table cloths and cardboard containers of parmigiano cheese. Upon our arrival I was pleasantly surprised to see a very nicely laid out dining area with brick walls, rustic dining decor, and a MONSTROSITY of an oven toward the back of the room. It looked like a beast that needed to be fed. Impressive is the word that I would use to describe it. This oven looked like it was hand made and erected by Eskimos. I later learned that this "Hearth" as they call it is part of their special "nice nice".. The idea of Flatbread is real food served by real people in a real environment. I also grant them "prop's" for being among the first local food loyal establishments in the area. They have been doin it like this since '98 and doing it well. The smells of this place are like that of a food bizzare in the country. All the normal smells you expect in a pizza spot, only better. Maybe it was the layered woody smell of the hearth that permeated everything else in the restaurant that made the difference. I dunno.. After getting the cultish introduction from my local highschool waitress, i ordered the Homemade Sausage pie: - homemade nitrate-free maple-fennel sausage with organic sulfatefree sundried tomatoes, caramelized organic onions, organic mushrooms, whole milk mozzarella and Parmesan cheese baked on organic dough with homemade organic garlic oil and organic herbs large: 18.00 I found myself wondering if the pizza would taste any good since half the menu talked about what WASNT in the ingredients (so cynical i was).. I half expected the crust to present like a doctored up boboli crust but man was i wrong. This crust was crispy, soft, flavorful and the sausage was RIDONKULOUS.. The sauce was light and flavorful, onions sweet and perfectly cooked without being slimy or burned. It was just simply like.... DAMNN! I swear that if you didn't know me you may have thought that I just got out of prison by the way I guarded my plate from those around me. Everyone was grabbing stuff off of my plate (a pet peeve of mine, only child) and all I could feel was the despair of pizza leaving the plate that would never reach my tastebuds and belly. "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" All kidding aside, I sat there eating crow in the form of square sliced pizza brilliance made by New England folk doin it right in Amesbury.. Well played guys.. All the rave reviews and I was underwhelmed. I'm not one to care about organic etc. I mean it's nice if it is and the price is right and the food tastes good but otherwise, whatever. For what it was, I thought it was pricey. We didn't really enjoy the sausage pizza because the sausage is made with maple syrup and very sweet. Which made for an oversweet pizza. They don't have a parking lot so as pointed out it's street parking. We had a hike because we didn't actually know where we the restaurant was. After ordering our pizza to an extraordinarily long time to be made. The restaurant didn't seem to be overly busy at the time so it was hard to figure why. I didn't really think the place lives up to the hype so maybe it's just not for me. read more

I'm embarrassed to say (as a current 2 year Amesbury resident) that I have never dined at Flatbread. Went here tonight with the bf and this place is the bomb (dot) com .. The best advice I can give to anyone thinking of going here is to call ahead. We went at 5:30 on a friday night (thinking we'd avoid most of the crowds going early) and the place was packed. at 5:30 there was a 35 minute wait, the girl told us that we should've called ahead.. helpful. We were seated after about a 40 minute wait. Flatbread is made up of mostly tables but a few booths line the outer edges of the restaurant. You are also welcome to sit downstairs where there is a more "lounge" feel with couches etc. In the main dining area there is a huge stone oven, kind of the centerpiece of the restaurant, and a lot of fun stuff to look at on the walls. While waiting we learned that most ingredients used are from local farms (they get their lettuce only from Cider Hill Farm in Amesbury!) which I thought was cool. They also have a lot of gluten-free options, since that seems to be popular too. On to the food: we ordered a large "Jays Heart" pizza (cheese pizza). It was delicious, we only had three slices left over afterwards... and it was a big pizza. The pizzas are thin crusted and seasoned to perfection - possibly now my favorite in the area. Thank god we brought home leftovers... since I'm craving it again already. For desert we had the brownie sundae to finish and that was divine as well. I love that their menu covers are drawn by little kids. The place is well hidden, I luckily walked in the right direction for once in my life and found it with relative ease. Pizza was cheesy, melty, tasty, and crisped just right at the crust. Gotta give it to those brick ovens... they do a fine job. Topping options are plentiful. Very busy, noisy. Waitress was extremely accomodating to a group of 10. It's pricey, but definitely worth a try. read more

We recently went to visit friends in Amesbury and the first place that my wife and I wanted to eat at was Flatbread. This is our second try and the pizzas turned out to be better than what we remembered. As New Yorkers, we imagine that we would be hard pressed to find pizza that is as good (if not better) than what we can find at home. Amesbury has come a long way in the culinary realm. Flatbread is just one of the great mainstays in a town that has been up and coming for oh, 30 years! Everything is fresh from the farm, free range and delicious. Yes it's super trendy to be 'all natural' these days, but Flatbread's mission for getting back to our roots is refreshing and funky. The atmosphere is great. Open concept and no fuss. They make it all about the food, as they should. The free range chicken pizza is my favorite, the veggie special a close second. I DO wish they delivered, but driving 10 minutes from NBPT isn't a huge chore for great pizza like this! It's a big family place, so if you're not so into lots of kids having run of the place, go later in the night. Then take a romantic walk by the falls...makes for a great date night! read more

In four words: Cool venue, delicious pizza. My wife, toddler, and I stopped here on the way home on a Saturday afternoon. We wanted something quick (but also something quality) before nap time (the toddler's, not ours) and this was perfect. The friendly service was speedy, the beer list gave us plenty of solid options, and the transparent cooking experience was unique. The food, though, was the highlight. We got two smalls (plain cheese and carmelized onion & pepperoni, and didn't leave a crumb. The toddler, picky about meat, couldn't stop stealing the scrumptious, crusty pepperoni. For $35, which included a couple beers, we couldn't have been happier. We'll most certainly be back if we're in the area again. read more

I haven't been here in many years and had kind of forgotten about this location as we usually go to one in North Conway. Anyways, had lunch here the other day. Nice little walk to the entrance on a hot summer day. Very friendly hostess and server. Shared salad with blue cheese and a small pizza - forget what it was called but it had onions and mushrooms on it very good! Everything very fresh and came out fast. So I took this really cool girl here and well I was a bit skeptical because, you know, it's just pizza right? WRONG!? Definitely a top ranking brick oven pizza if I do say so myself! We ordered half of the Jimmy's Free-range Chicken and half of some kind that the pork and BBQ sauce. That sauce though ugh. Saving this in the ol' mental cabinet for sure. Clearly I am a huge fan of Flatbread, but I try to see each location individually. We frequent all the Flatbread Co locations due to a vegan/soy free diet (and bring our own Daiya). I think Amesbury is one of my favorite Flatbread Locations. Amesbury Flatbread Co is an inviting, open, and cozy atmosphere. The waitstaff is very accommodating and the pizzas are flavorful. As usual, the pizzas come out quick! On a Tuesday night, we were even treated to live music. There was a mishap with our order, and they apologized (both waitstaff & cook) and then compensated us for their error in a very gracious fashion. Their display of devotion to the customer alone will keep us coming back! Free parking is available and close enough to walk. read more

We've been going to the Flatbread Co. in Amesbury for several years. Unfortunately, I'm not sure whether we'll be going back anytime soon. On our most recent visit on a Saturday night, the food, as always, was very good. Their organic salad is top-notch, and we love their pizza, though we're just as happy with the pizza at several other restaurants. But the noise level is really starting to get to us. And on this particular occasion, there were so many takeout orders that people in the dining room were simply not getting served. We waited nearly an hour for our pizza to come, and, looking around, we could see that there was virtually no turnover at any of the tables, because we were all waiting. Meanwhile, stacks and stacks of takeout boxes were being brought to the front of the room. Flatbread needs to find a better way of taking care of people in the dining room, even if it means not having takeout during the busiest times. We wanted dessert. We skipped it, not wanting to risk tacking on another half-hour to what had already been an overly long visit. read more

We came here as a family and ordered multiple pizzas including the special potato pizza. They were pretty good except the flavor was not very consistent across all the slices in a given pizza. Some slices would be perfect but then others would be more salty. Kids had a great time playing with the dough though. Definitely worth a visit - we however always had better luck with the Burlington location!! read more

Now, my stepdad is one of those people who says, for example, 'Col. Sanders' when he means 'Kentucky Fried Chicken.' So, when he recently talked about 'Flatbread Pizza' in Amesbury, I wondered what the hell the name of the place actually was. Well, tonight I got to visit this place, and the name actually IS 'Flatbread Pizza.' Go figure. 'Flatbread' is located in the middle of a quaint centuries old industrial complex of brick buildings and the Powwow river, complete with falls, wooden bridges, and the wooden axle where a giant wooden wheel once turned with the force of the river, and made stuff go. The drive there also takes you through a thickly settled neighborhood that looks a LOT like the town from 'Back to the Future'-you really expect Doc Brown to come flying around the corner in his Deloreon at any second. Someone else described the inside as 'cavernous'-this is true. Actually its not that large, but the 2 story ceiling gives the feeling that it is. And since its built sort of into the side of a hill, you have the disorienting experience of seeing car headlights shining through the second story windows, when you look up. (Or maybe that's Doc again, this time with the flying Deloreon??) As for the food, when people ask me if I prefer deep dish or thin crust, I usually just say 'Yes.' Also the oven is in plain sight and made of some kind of dark grey stone-it actually looks like they're cooking your pizza in a small cave. We played it safe with a pepperoni and mushroom, and all I can say is 'Damn!' This was very good pizza, with a crispy crust, and had a good 'zip' to it that made the need for crushed red pepper totally unnecessary. The atmosphere is loud and busy without being stressful or annoying. The interior, like Peddler's Daugher and Uno's, is lovingly decorated with random items (i.e. 'crap') that makes you feel like the place has been here for 100 years. The service was very pleasant. There's even a bicycle rack out front made entirely of old logs; In order to run a wood fired oven, you need lots and lots and lots of logs. But don't worry; Trees are a renewable resource. So overall I quite liked this place. The only thing I don't get is the way they seem to push goat cheese on the menu-are there no cows in Amesbury...?? read more

If I was judging it based only on a comparison with other flatbread co.s I'd prob have to say 3, because its not my favorite one. But it gets an extra point for being in a really cool space, friendly staff, and tasty and organic ingredients. Why its not as good as the flatbread co in n. conway: menu is smaller, they don't have small pizzas so we ended up spending $50 on two pizzas and drinks because they were both LARGE, and I didn't find the pizzas as tasty here. This place is a little bit hard to find (it's not visible from the street). It's also a big open dining room, so it seems kind of noisy with kid's birthday parties and things like that. The pizza is good, though. I found the toppings on the specials to be a bit too "experimental" and maybe weird-just-to-be-weird. But overall it's a decent pie. It's fun to watch the guys making the pizza (as the oven is in the dining room) and to try to guess if they are making your pizza. Oddly, I prefer the frozen version of their pizza. read more

We heard about it from Phatom Gourmet on TV,and since we had to go to Amesbury, we thought we'd try it. Pros: The pizza was good. We ordered Pepperoni/Mushroom... The pepperoni is nitrate free, but thought it tasted different than regular pepperoni. Will definitely try again sometime, though. Very cool atmosphere, love the oven!! Cons: It is a bit pricey, and a large pizza was too big and when we tried to order a small, we were discouraged, said it was individual. We think "Not your average Joes" pizza, is a a bit better and less money. Salads seemed odd, and overpriced. If a half-salad was an option, we would have tried one. Menu, was a little limited, could of had a bit more options? Cute mill area. Parking kinds bites. You have to walk to the restaurant no matter what, but it is rather nice. Promptly seated. The waitstaff seemed nice enough, but a little pushy in selling "specials". Special occasion for us kinda place since a pizza runs about $20 a piece. The lights kept flickering- maybe something in the mills are taking a wallop of electricity- it was distracting a bit from the experience. The food was delish! all natural ingredients!! yay for that. Great local spot. Pizza is excellent, salads are a little pricey buy local and fresh and even the small splits well for a couple. We've been a few times and service varies. They hire pretty young staff and for some it must be their first time serving. It's never really been an issue but there have been some lengthy waits and a few mistakes, but that's life. read more

Pizza Perfect and Oh, go, before you go! Friends who live in Amesbury told us about this locally hip and trendy paradise of pizza tucked away behind the falls and in the courtyard of downtown mill buildings. We were immediately struch by the family freindly environment, yet also hosted many young coulples and date nights out. Like us! Waitstaff is is charming, engaging and informative. We sat outside on pick a nick tables, looking for Yogi Bear to beg a slice of pizza. They have a full bar selection, try the blueberry mojito or local beers on draft. Their organic salad gave us crisp local greens, a pleasing bite of balsamic and a refreshing tang of goat cheese. We shaed one salad and that was enough for us. All their ingredients are sourced as local as possible. They show an obvious culture of supporting local farmers and area charities. Admirable in this day of bigger means less for more that many eateries adopt to cut quality and costs. Not here at Flatbread Co. Quality and the pride that comes along with it radiates in each interaction with their staff. Refreshing! One of the specials was their vegetarian pizza, which featured their stand out thin crust fire roasted crust, just enough red sauce to cover not smother, tomatoes, broccoli, red oinion, summer squash and cheese, which was drizzled with a sweet balsamic after emerging from it's ovenly origins.Tasty and we ate and laughed outside, not realizing we ate almost the entire pleasing pizza. Now, there comes a time during or after most meals when you wish to retire to the restroom. This is the only quirk about this place. It's a looooong way off! They do have a one person restroom upstairs, so most of us find ourselves on a quest for the bathroom. The trip is so long that your mind starts to make up things as you wind through downstairs cellar hallways. Was this a training ground for the Underground Railroad? This bladder busting walk takes you through a labyrinth of stone lined walkways until you finally see your "great convenience." They may wish to put in place a rest stop for directions and encouragement, but no refreshments along the way or the way back. You'd only have to go again! Flatbread Co is worth the trip. I have been eating gluten-free for about two years, and going out to eat has been a problem ever since. Not only can I not trust menu items to have no gluten (wheat, oats, barley, rye, malt, etc,) but also I walk into many places that have no idea what gluten is. They offer up gluten-free crust topped with whatever you can imagine. I am a plain person and just got pinapple, but nevertheless, it was delicious. My boyfriend and I dinned here, and he got regular pizza. He said that the GF-crust was thicker and more doughy, but that did not discourage me from indulging. The atmosphere was alright. We went around eight on a Friday night, prime time apparently. For such a busy place, there was only one bathroom for men, women, and children alike. During my visit, I had to wait uncomforably to use the rest room. The waitresses/waiters were nice. It was slammed, so understandably they could not pay as much attention to each party, but I usually expect a "mid-dinner" check up. You know, "Oh, how is everything? Is it alright? Can I get you anything else, a refill on your drink?" We were taking our last bite before leaving and then she came over to ask us. For the price ($4 extra) of a gluten free pizza, I am more inclined to have a pizza night of my own and purchase a mix from Market Basket that tastes equally as good. Overall, a decent place, with decent food, but intended for people with a bigger wallet than mine. read more

We were passing through on the way south and stopped to look for Wild Garlic. They were closed for vacation. Wandered a bit through the lovely Amesbury and happened upon flatbread. Dog friendly outdoor tables were the original attraction but it got way better than that. We split a small Amesbury Community Flatbread which was lovely. The crust was PERFECT! We also had a side salad which was also perfect... nice dressing on the side. The wait staff were great -- helpful, accommodating, flexible and responsive. We got take out and sat by the falls. Stopped in on a Friday mid-afternoon and it was a beautiful afternoon outdoors. We had two Labradors with us and asked if we could sit outside on the picnic tables with our dogs, the hostess happily obliged. We started with the organic salad which had a very good house dressing followed by two small pizzas: the homemade sausage and chicken con carne. The chicken con carne was fabulous, the chicken was tender with roasted corn, black beans - a very unique mix of flavors on pizza. My friend preferred the sausage which I thought was good but the sausage felt almost minced. I prefer chunks of sausage but it was still good. Can't wait to return to try other pizzas! read more

I like regular pizza better but I have no trouble making a meal out of this. It's a noisy place, too loud for the 10 (I think) yelpers who were there to be a part of one conversation. It worked out though, everyone seemed to have a good time. This is a hard spot to find, but my wife is familiar with Amesbury so I didn't get lost. The last time I was here, the place was crawling the kids. It was off the hook crazy. This time was better but mostly it was the company that makes me smile when I think back.
