We were on our way somewhere else when we almost passed this Tripoli's, thankfully, I remembered that Tripoli's pizza is always a good idea. It was around 9 PM and we were hungry. Even though there were quite a few people waiting, we were served right away. It was pretty quiet overall, perhaps it was the windy and cold conditions. Our server was kind and attentive, though his pace and speech were noticeably slow, hard to explain, but it felt like he was moving in slow motion. That said, he got everything right, and we appreciated the service. We ordered an 8 piece cheese pizza and two regular cannoli. As someone who has visited the New England coast for 40 years, "beach pizza" has a forever spot in my heart. It is a very specific profile and may certainly seem like an acquired taste to the uninitiated/unprepared. However, my love of beach pizza is genuinely a core personality trait and I'd never say no to a square of crunchy crust, sweet sauce, cheese sprinkled perfection. We visited Tripoli and got a few slices of the pepperoni. I grew up in New Jersey, making frequent trips to NYC, so I am a bit of a pizza snob. This pizza was good for New Hampshire, but sits at just average compared to some of my favorite NJ/NY slices. I enjoyed trying beach pizza, which is what they serve. The thing that distinguishes beach pizza from regular pizza is that the red sauce is a bit sweet. It was really fun to try something new, but the sauce was just a bit too sweet for me. I also wish my slice has more cheese, as there were many bare spots on both of my slices. The dough was nice and crispy on the bottom and fluffy on the inside. It was cooked perfectly, but honestly was not the most flavorful dough. Overall I think the pizza was very basic minus the interesting tinge of sweetness in the sauce. This Tripoli location is cool because of the ambiance: you can sit right on the marsh. It was very nice to eat on a picnic bench and look out over the meadows and the water. My first time in New Hampshire! As a New Yorker my standards for pizza are high and hard to meet let alone succeed. I find the farther you get from NY, the worse the pizza gets but this was the best pizza I've had this far away from New York. The sauce was a little sweet which I don't mind since I love margherita pizza and this kinda gave that vibe but without the basil. The crust was perfectly crispy yet soft, an amazing texture. I get it, beach pizza isn't for everyone. It's a different style than what originated with the best pizza makers to come out of NYC. But who cares, when it's good? Tripoli just turned 100, holy cow! There is a reason for that and why it remains a place that continues to draw lines to wait and order, they do everything consistently right at a really good price point. Even when everything else seems to have gone up, you can't beat a slice here for under three bucks. As you head on in to Hampton Beach, this is a must stop for anyone wanting to try something a little different. Saunter on up to the window after what might be a little line and place your order with a grandma who looks like she has worked there for 50 years which is something I always love to see. The pizza never takes more than like five minutes to come out piping hot. The half sheet is going to be your best deal, even if you don't plan on finishing it all in one sitting. Saucy and sweet, with little cheese....and a crisp that Portnoy apparently missed with his abhorrent review of Tripoli, it really feels like you are magically walking the Boards on a 92 degree day people watching every time you take a bite. Everyone knows this place, if you don't you need to go try it. This isn't the greatest pizza ever made but is an institution. You can't call yourself a foodie if you haven't tried it. This is no New York slice, but it's good for what it is. My friends and I came here to grab ice cream from Dunlap's next door, but we smelled the pizza and decided to go for it. The pizza was reminiscent of frozen square pizza, but more of an elevated version. The sauce was very sweet and almost reminded me of the sauce that comes with Lunchables pizza, but not in a bad way. Given I'm not a big cheese fan, I actually appreciated that there was just a small sprinkling of cheese, but I would imagine most people would prefer a more generous amount of cheese. But then each piece was topped with sauce, shredded cheese, and a FULL SLICE OF PROVOLONE (the "extra cheese" she was talking about). You could see the shredded cheese under the full slice of provolone. If you've never had this pizza before, it looks really bizarre at first sight! One of my friends affectionately called it "provolone pie." The dough was thick, chewy and sort of bland, but the sauce made up for it. It was a sweet sauce that was very flavorful. Seems like it was meant to be the stand-out ingredient of this pizza as there is minimal shredded cheese added if you were to order it without the extra slice of provolone, making the pizza predominantly dough and sauce. Still not sure what to make of this. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. I like this pizza a lot even though it may not be for everyone. It's perfect for the style. Someone said it's like Ellio's pizza, but it's way better. This is more like in Rome where the sheet pan pizza is sitting out at the shop window. It's not that the pizza tastes similar, it's that the experience of the pizza is similar. Here, pizza enhances the enjoyment of the beach or the city and doesn't demand your attention. It's like salt--the right amount of salt. The thing that differentiates Tripoli's from other places like it is the sauce is super sweet. I'm not sure if they add a bunch of sugar or the sweetness comes from the tomatoes, but whatever it is, it highlights the nice tomato flavor, and the top thing you taste is the sweetness. The texture is crunchy with a bready crust but not bland like a cracker or how $5 pizza tastes really bleached. It's bakery sheetpan bready at the crust edge, but the pizza stays flat as you eat and doesn't fold. This quality is really nice. The cheese stays above the sauce not melted into the sauce. It's got its own texture that is slightly chewy and salty. It's melted, but it's floats above the sauce like a little cheese cloud. COVID-wise, they have lines in the street six feet apart. People in line were wearing masks. Employees were wearing masks and gloves. At other places in the area, the lines were a little socially claustrophobic. read more

First time trying beach pizza and I loved it! My friend took me after we spent the day at the beach and I was surprised to see how affordable the slices were. I got one pepperoni and one regular slice for less than $5 and it was quite tasty. The sauce is definitely on the sweeter side but it paired really well with the herbs and red pepper flakes that I added.
