Club sandwich with potato salad
Evangelina B.

My friend and I came here on a Friday evening and it was mildly busy. They have a good menu to choose from and I especially like you can have breakfast all day. My friend and I both got the club sandwich. I got the potato salad and she for fries. It was very delicious and a hearty portion. I would definitely order it again. I also love the interior of this location. It's super retro and gives that true diner vibe. Our server was nice and attentive. If you're looking for a good diner with great food then you should try this spot!

California Hamburger

This is my go to burger spot! I always order the same California burger with bacon and avocado. They do it right! The fry's are good doesn't taste frozen and yummy with ketchup and hot sauce. Service is pretty decent and the food comes quickly and hot. I love the menu it has different options from pasta, breakfast, steak, liver (not for me) something for everyone. The desserts are off the hook! You can see the cakes when you walk in and they are as good as they look! Be prepared to gain 20 pounds! The inside has a lot of bright tropical look almost a Vegas type feel. Lots of parking. I would recommend!

What kind of place gives you no syrup for a waffle??????? Oh and they did give me salsa ugh!

I order a waffle and they gave me ketchup, butter and salsa for it....It was a Togo order...so its pretty lame. I thought i would treat myself to a nice breakfast but nope rhey ruined it! Also theres eggshells in the egg! Wtf

Grilled cheese and fries, my favorite mmmmm
Leanne Z.

Big portion, okay prices. Service is okay. Could be more cheerful. Matter of face, no greeting. I've been here several times before as it's my moms favorite.. Always the same. The ambiance is okay. Can be loud when busy but that's to be expected.

Biscuits and gravy

Every time we either dine in here or order takeout, the food is prepared perfectly, and tastes great! My go to dish is the French dip with extra crispy fries and a side salad with thousand island dressing. My buddies ordered the biscuits & heavy with a side of sausage, and a combination omlette with hashbrowns. The service is always friendly and top notch. I've been frequenting this flames location ever since the location across from Santa Row closed. Give this place a try! You won't regret it.

California Omelet

Hey there Party People Some times you just want a good old fashion diner experience...pull yourself up to the counter have that black cup of coffee and just soak up the atmosphere. Flames is that diner The food is always big and tasty weather you are going for that stick to your ribs breakfast or a ginormous salad or sandwich. My hubby and I went for breakfast omelets this time and it was great We just couldn't pass up the Garlic Bread with feta cheese as well as the Potato Skins. Next time we are definitely going to do the lunch side of the menu

Crisp but cold bacon

I walked and am immediately greeted by a server to seat me! A great start. Immediately get coffee. Not the worst coffee but I'm a snob. My server was prompt and courteous. There was another lady with the coffee pot that was awesome at keeping everyone's coffee warm. Bravo! It's quiet inside. First thing in the morning, I like it quiet. Thank you. I order the Tampico "something". lol. Huge portion that I couldn't finish, bacon crisp but cold (thumbs down on the bacon), OJ had to be fresh squeezed! This was a really good start to my day.

Santa Fe crepes

This is a little restaurant/diner which is popular with the older crowd especially during the week. I was in the area for a test and was craving diner food. It wasn't busy and the menu wasn't overwhelming. Settled on coffee and the Santa Fe Crepes. Food came out quickly and fast. The serving size was pretty good. So much so that I had a left over crepe to have later. Cute spot. Reminded me of a so cal diner chain called Spires.

Flames Coffee Shop & Bakery is located in the Los Paseos neighborhood in South San Jose, near Santa Teresa County Park. My colleagues and I came here for lunch on 10/02/2022 after a recruiting event at the nearby Gavilan College Police Academy. It was busy when we walked in at around 1:30 pm. It took a few minutes before we were seated at a corner booth at our request. The interior was clean and bright, and the vibe and decors were old school 80s. It totally reminded me of diners of yesteryear. One of the servers came by and got us started with drinks. The menu featured a plethora of diner classics. After some deliberation, my colleagues got the California Burger, Morning Quesadilla, and the California Omelette while I opted for the Works Omelette. Our order took about 15 minutes to arrive. Portions were generous. My omelette had plenty of ham, bacon, linguica, and sausage in it and was tasty. The hash browns were nice and crispy. My colleagues all finished their food. I heard no complaints from them. We were pleased with the service we received. The owner and his staff were friendly and helpful. This was a great recommendation by the academy staff. Will definitely return next time we speak at the academy. 4 stars. BONUS MATERIAL: - Major credit cards accepted. - Outdoor and counter seating available.

Quite possibly the worst restaurant in San Jose. I would feel bad if I let my enemies go there. Food, service, ambiance zero.

So, I live for coffee. I roast it, buy it, sell it, cup it, pack it, ship it, mix it, blend it…read more.. you name it. So when I travel, I'm usually hauling around an arsenal of brewing gear like some caffeinated survivalist. And yeah... I'm picky AF. I like what I like. So if you're gonna serve me coffee, it better show up dressed in a suit and tie. In this case, it absolutely did. I had to give the local spot near Grandma's house a shot. I walked in with crossed fingers and low expectations, but walked out with a satisfied palate, a smile, and an eagerness to visit again soon. This is NOT your run-of-the-mill coffee shop. They roast onsite. Real deal, Holyfield. I started with an espresso. Then a cortado. Then grabbed a bag of Yirgacheffe to go because I gotta see what else they got going on. . These guys clearly know what they're doing; and if they don't, they accidentally perfected it anyway. The espresso was balanced, clean, and intentional. Nothing hidden behind over-roasting or gimmicks. Just refined quality coffee handled correctly. I'm genuinely glad spots like this exist, and even happier one sits right here near my fam. Seriously, can't wait to visit again.

The drinks were still top-notch--we really enjoyed them, and the Mediterranean bagel was also fresh and delicious. Quality-wise, they absolutely deliver. That said, the customer service unfortunately didn't match the level of the coffee. The cashier interaction felt curt and low-energy, and overall not very welcoming. When my husband asked about their most popular specialty drink, she mentioned the "Milky Way" and compared it to a Starbucks macchiato--which felt like an odd comparison for a specialty coffee shop that otherwise seems to take pride in its craft. More than anything, the interaction came across as disengaged and a bit uninterested, which stood out because places like this usually shine in both product and service. We'll likely still come back for the coffee and food, but I do think the service experience matters a lot--and this visit didn't quite meet expectations on that front.

The donuts were made to order, and I still remember the two young employees who worked there. They'd happily let you know it might take a few minutes because they wanted you to experience the product the way it was meant to taste. That kind of pride in what you're serving is rare, and it made a real impression. There's something different about that kind of enthusiasm coming from employees versus an owner. An owner has an obvious stake in selling you on something, but when the people making your food are genuinely excited for you to try it, that energy is contagious. You can't help but feed off of it. Fast forward to this year. My daughter loves coming here since we frequently visit the amazing Chinese restaurant next door (China Delight-highly recommend), so I've brought her a few times. Unfortunately, it's been a different experience. The donuts are always pre-made, and the focus seems to be more on cleaning and closing down than on having a fresh product ready for customers. To be fair, the staff is always friendly and I do appreciate a clean shop , but when I'm choosing between a spotless floor and a donut worth eating, I'd rather have the latter. I'll note that I usually come a bit after dinnertime, so maybe timing plays a role. But after a few visits with the same result, it feels more like a shift in priorities than bad luck. I genuinely hope this place finds its way back to what made it great. The bones are there. The location is great, the staff is kind, and clearly there's a customer base that wants to love this place. Bring back the fresh donuts and you'll earn those stars back!!

They are pre-made and stored in a glass case, unlike other places like Modo Hawaii that make them when you order. The donuts come in a nice box. They are large and dense and chewy, but weren't to my taste as I like them smaller and lighter, but that's just a personal preference. I'm not sure if I will go back, but I hope they do well at the Cottle location.
