Wow. What an expirence. I have dined in steakhouses all over the country and this one stood out above all the rest. Came in for my anniversary and was treated like royalty by my server and both bartenders. What an expirence. The food was top notch and the bourbon selection did not disappoint. This review will keep to the Red Room located in the depths of Flame ... quite literally the bowels of the restaurant. A travel down the spiral staircase can easily be likened to moving through the large intestine. At the base of the staircase, you are spilled forth into inexplicable darkness that seems to pulsate in a radioactive red tone. Once fully contained within the space, it took a few minutes for the eyes to adjust and to become somewhat aware of the surroundings. The place is far too dark, especially for the famed burger happy hour in which one will be consuming food. This uncomfortable blackness that hangs in the air seems like an easy way to present unattractive plates, since you genuinely can't even see what you are eating. Another fear of mine regarding this red wonderland is that if you were to turn on all the lights, the place would be blotted in vomit stains. Moving on... While I have been here a handful of times for the happy hour and even for drinks over the past three years, it seems to have become more popular while the food and atmosphere have become less desirable. During the most recent experience, we sat down at one of several dirty tables (as no other options were available). It took several minutes to get noticed, and the service while friendly was constantly apologizing for things gone amiss (dirty table, slow order, lack of attention etc....). The burger was pretty mediocre and dry. For the measly asking price I guess I didn't mind. But the accompanying fry logs that were rolled through a desert of cajun seasoning sent me into a coughing fit. They were so over seasoned that it was actually humorous. On the subject of humor, the type of people that tend to frequent such a place provide the comic relief for the whole experience. It is laughable the way some people get gussied up to get a 3 dollar burger at 5 in the afternoon. Not to mention that no one can even see you in such dim conditions... unless you ornament yourself in the disco ball look of fake plastic jewels. (Believe it or not, their were some ladies' tops that fit this description) This setting while tacky is tolerable in the company of friends who are as easily adept to making jokes about this garishly clad location. But jokes soon lose their charm, as they should. I forgot to mention, but for a "happy hour" this place doesn't even offer any beer specials.. A lousy boulevard wheat will rob you of $5.50. You can't even get drunk here affordably to make everything appear better. This is truly the place to go when you don't really want to be seen. It reminds me of an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry constantly takes his girl to the same dimly lit corner booth at the coffee shop because it's the only place she looks radiant... Despite my negative sentiment for the Red Room, I think I'd like to eat at Flame sometime, just to experience it. (Look for a review update in the distant future when I have some real fliff). For now, this is as close as many of us can get to the pricey dining experience that Flame promises to be.Though the sorry Red Room experience hasn't instilled an overwhelming will to venture up to Flame.... or return to its lower level accessory. read more

Fabulous. My husband and I ate here for a recent date night and it was amazing! For the first time in my life, I was envious of the 8oz filet that my husband had ordered and I would gladly have traded my Ahi Tuna for his filet. I avoid red meat at all costs secondary to a taste and texture aversion... however, if we returned I would not hesitate to order the filet. The taste was exceptional with a soft (not chewy) texture. We started with the smoked fries and fondue (wonderful!). I ordered the Ahi Tuna entree with side of twice baked potato. My husband had his filet with side of jalapeño mashed potatoes with candied bacon (fabulous!). They also brought bread (popovers and pumpkin muffin (texture of moist cornbread with very slight sweetness - just describing it makes me want to go back). Our service was wonderful... we went through Yelp to reserve our table as well which I would recommend. The Red Room is downstairs and a bit more casual with happy hour specials. Dress up or down, you will be fine. Would highly, highly recommend Flame restaurant and we will defiantly be back. read more

Went downstairs to red room, best filet mignon I've had, didn't even need the house sauce that came with it. The smoke fries taste great too! That coupled with great service make this place a great place to go for any special occasion! As expected, prices are a bit high but shouldn't be enough to deter you from going. Only downside is seating, some tables are too short and others seats (couch) sank a bit. Not enough to take off any stars though. read more

The ambience was fantastic, the wait staff was very attentive, and the food was delicious. Must try the smoked fries, lobster mac and cheese and even the twice baked potato. Both the delmonico and ribeye steaks were huge (can easily be shared), tender, juicy, and flavorful. And if you're celebrating a birthday or anniversary, let them know in advance--you'll be in for a real treat! Dress code: classy casual or business casual is just fine--you don't have to be too dressed up. For a downtown restaurant I found it very helpful that they have their own parking lot. Great place to celebrate with the one you love--the atmosphere is sure to put you in the most relaxed and even romantic mood. read more

Our second visit, our daughter is attending college in Springfield. Made an open table reservation. Used the valet parking since is was pouring when we arrived. Greeted and seated. Nice table. Started with couple bar cocktails, and shrimp cocktails. Added calamari. Ryan our waiter was very good. Never rushed and very informative. Salads next, the wedge was great authentic blue cheese. The bearded wine steward was a really nice funny guy. That the zin he recommended was fantastic a bonus. Steaks were prefect, a bone-in ribeye, regular ribeye and two filets grilled and presented as ordered. Smoked fries and baked potatoes wonderful. We were driving through Springfield, MO on our way back to Northern California and stopped here for a nice dinner out. We were not disappointed. The ambiance is great, the staff friendly and attentive. Their special cocktails are pretty good as well. I had the Friendly Manhattan. It is an interesting take on a classic. It includes Knob Creek Bourbon, vanilla and B&B. Quite tasty. My wife had the Lucy with strawberry infused rum. Also yummy. Rather than have the entrees, we decided on 4 appetizers. The escargot was served in a bread bowl and was great. The sliders came with fries and were likewise great. The Boursin cheese makes them a bit rich, however. The onion straws were good. The steamed broccoli was excellent. Service was attentive and enjoyable. The only negative is that the appetizers were too salty for our taste and a bit too rich. This place was awesome! A friend and I were dropping off our girls at Msu, and we decided to treat ourselves with a nice dinner out. This steakhouse did not disappoint. We arrive with little hope that we would be able to eat here as we didn't have a reservation. But we were pleasantly surprised when they had a table suitable just for us. We each ordered a glass of wine to start with. We welcomed the bread which was a tasty pop over and two little mini muffins. Just perfect to tide us over until our entrée. My steak the ribeye was seasoned to perfection. I ordered it medium rare and it was prepared exactly to my expectation. As a side I had the lobster mac & cheese and oh my gosh it was sinful! First, the good. The Hot Platter appetizer was great. The calamari were fried to perfection, crab cakes were delicious, and the mushrooms delectable. The 3 sauces that come with the appetizer are not to be missed. Our waiter was wonderful. He really knew his wine and made sure we were doing well without being obtrusive. And now the bad. The steak was so so. Quite honestly, Argentina Steakhouse has much better and less expensive meat. Also, it comes with a lot more sides there. The lighting was very poor. I do understand the concept of atmosphere lighting and dimming the lights to make the room appear more intimate. But the lighiting was so poor that I couldn't read the menu and kept dropping the food because I couldn't see it. The worst part was the temperature in the restaurant. It was 92F in the restaurant! We kept asking the staff to turn up the A/C but with no success. In fact, another waiter proudly proclaimed that it's 65Fin the Red Room Lounge. Ok, that's great but I'm paying premium to eat at the restaurant so I would hope that I can enjoy my $40 steak without dripping sweat on it. Well, Flame, you are a little bit too full of yourself. I will definitely seeking my culinary satisfaction somewhere else. read more

the food was great!!! But it was kinda dark in there and loud and also busy for a Wednesday night. The service was a little slow, they didn't keep up with the drinks real well, the peanut butter and jelly muffins was great. And the steak was perfect so was the dessert. The bath room was small an they had water all over the floor but I think someone right before me did that. But like I said the service was slow and I think I had better service at olive garden and red lobster then this. In town for business and have it a try. Dining room was full but we went to the Red Room, a downstairs lounge with a cool vibe. Full menu was available there. Great menu. I had a hard time selecting from the many options. Exceptionally good service. I tried the smokey fries which came with delicious cheese dip. Also loved the shrimp cake with sweet chili sauce. The star was the steak medallions with maple mustard glaze. Just fantastic. I wish I could have eaten more. Tasty cherry chocolate muffins came with the meal as did a popover. I really enjoy flame. For several reasons. The calamari is cut into thick strips and deep fried - a unique take on calamari, but very good. The dry aged steak is amazing, and probably the best I've had in Springfield. I also tried the salmon - it was great - not better than most other places, but still great. It was topped with crab with gave it a nice touch. The wine list is extensive, although as self-professed wine snobs, my boyfriend and I brought our own bottle. The corking fee is only $10 which is a great, fair, price. Parking is monitored for customers only, which is great downtown on a Saturday night. The atmosphere is good, but the tables are jammed in together and some are in pretty awkward locations. You do need a reservation on the weekend, so plan ahead. Also, I think it's just a few dollars over-priced. I'm not opposed to paying a lot for a dinner, especially a good dinner, but things aren't quite worth what they charge here. A very good restaurant though, and a must-try for Springfieldians. read more

Another Yelp reviewer commented on how Flame doles out bread like it is gold and we had the same experience. One Popover for 2 of us. Later when it was taking a bit for our food, the server offered another popover but then the salads arrived and said "oh Your food is here". Great service, good and $$$ food, but it's just way too loud (from the overhead speaker music and from conversations of nearby tables) on a Thursday night to have a conversation with those at your table. Plus, last night we were seated under the mezzanine. We've been seated there before. The ceiling is very low, it's dark and the tables are extremely close. Even with the mirrors on the wall, I feel pinned in there ~ I'm 5'2" and a size 6. Yes, I recommend Flame. No, I do not recommend the tables under or on the mezzanine.
