Cheddar grits, fried chicken omelet and a lemonade. Chicken & waffles in the background
Nay W.

2nd visit. Another 4 added from the 1st to make a party of 6. Will only seat after all are present. My family is never on time so I'm glad they still seated us past the reservation time. 3 people ordered chicken & waffles. 2 people ordered a chicken omelet. 1 person ordered the blue platter (?). We got 2 appetizers before our water & drinks. This is significant & hilarious because 2 people had eaten a spicy pepper from one of the appetizers & were frantically looking for something to drink. That's when we realized we hadn't gotten water yet. Food was fresh & cooked after ordering, because it took quite some time for the 1st half of the table to get their food. Then came the omelets and at least 5 minutes after the omlets was the simple plate. I enjoyed the omelet & the grits were nicely seasoned!

I sat at the bar on a Thursday night and the service was really good! The bartenders were very helpful when I asked which dish to get and she suggested what I wanted anyways, the gumbo. The gumbo was everything I dreamed of. I got a sweet tea which lived up to its SWEET title. The music was nice, not too loud and the restaurant was a well organized place. Can't wait to go back!

10 of out 10 for the food. The service was very good. Our waitress Dior was very helpful, and knowledgeable about the menu. My husband said the fried chicken and the yams were ! The collard greens were delicious, as well. I really enjoyed the cornbread muffin and the butter spread that came with it. It was extra delicious. The restaurant had an eclectic vibe, and it was inviting and lively. The decor was very special, full of Detroit history, music and print materials. We live 3 hours away but can't wait to come back to Detroit, so we can to eat here again.

True southern love provided here!! Will leave with full and happy belly! It was easy to make a reservation online. On arrival, the hosts were prompt to greet our group and assist us with sitting. I will say the kitchen moves quickly. This is excellent especially if you come before a game or concert. The setting is modern with some Motown favorites! They do have the main dining area and bar with seating as well as a back dining and bar area. There are an assortment of drinks - kool aids to alcoholic beverages as well as assortment of entrées. All dishes that came out looked delicious. At the table we started with the deep fried deviled eggs and fried tomatoes- wonderful and unique dishes. We had an assortment of dishes from the chicken tenders, chicken sandwich, chicken and waffles, fish nuggets and burger. The chicken and waffle was divine! The sandwich and chicken and waffle are good to share- portions are a nice size. We tried a variety of sides the yams, rice and beans, fries, collard greens, and cornbread muffins. I will say personally some items were too sweet or salty for me but others enjoyed. When feeling in the mood for southern dish, I'd check this place out.

I chose this place for my birthday dinner because comfort food is my favorite. This place has everything I look for In a soul food restaurant. Great service, beautiful decor that represents the culture, good music and amazing food. From the time I walked in it just had a good feel to it. The place was very busy but I had reservations and on waited about 10 minutes pass my reserved time. I ordered the fried chicken and waffle with a side of Mac n cheese. The waffle was cooked perfectly and paired well with the delicious crisp and juicy fried chicken. The seasoning on the skin was just right. The Mac n cheese was sooo creamy and but not overwhelming mixture of cheeses. The food was sooo creamy and good I ended up ordering more chicken, greens, yams and Mac to go. The greens were a bit strong for my taste not sure what they were soaked in but I would not get those again but the yams and the Mac are a definite repeat. I appreciate that as busy as this place was it was still kept pretty clean. Even the bathroom was clean If you ever in the Detroit area I highly recommend making a reservation and get you some comforting food that's good for the soul!

Walked here to meet a friend for lunch. Customer service was great on arrival. The restaurant is sooo freaking cute. The food was amazing and the cost is so affordable. The location is perfect. It is walking distance to most hotels downtown. The Koolaid was sweet and tasty. I mean it ain't koolaid if it ain't sweet sweet. Our server was funny and she was on point. It's a must visit every time I'm in Detroit.

I came here with a large group of people for brunch. The menu consists mostly of fried southern food. Fried deviled eggs, fried green tomatoes, fried fish, fried chicken, etc. The food is fine, but not particularly flavorful. I ordered the Fried Fish, which comes with cornmeal crusted fish, corn fritters, and two sides for $26. A little pricey, but at least the servings were large, and I had leftovers to take home. I like that there are free drink refills. I am not a fan of their seating policy. Once you are seated, the clock starts with 90 minutes to dine. Even though the restaurant was not full, some of us decided to wait to be seated until more people arrived because we didn't want the 90 minute clock to start. The seating policy is very strict and does not provide leeway when the restaurant isn't fully occupied.

Instant favorite! 10/10 recommend. The food, ambiance and service was amazing. I can't believe how fast the food came out, it was piping hot and delicious. I can't wait to come back and try more menu items. Kevin Johnson did an amazing job with this restaurant concept.

I wish I could give this zero stars. This place has gnats!! Fried chicken taste like day old chicken and it's bleeding. I order it and they literally came out within 2 mins. Fried chicken take more time then that! Mac and cheese was salty and too much pepper! Greens were mediocre. Only good thing is the cornbread and the sprite! I want me $20 back for this nasty food, I thought I was getting soul food! There is no soul in this food! They should be ashamed! They have a nice and clean bathroom, I guess that's a plus!

Oxtails over red beans and rice

Really great food! We came here on Juneteenth after leaving a celebration. We did have a reservation and I highly recommend you make one. The wait wasn't too bad even though the restaurant was packed and every table was filled. I ordered the Fried chicken with collard greens and Mac n cheese. The fried chicken was exquisite. It tasted like it had been brined for 24-hours so definitely appreciated that. The collard greens had some vinegar on it and it was sooo good! The Mac n cheese was good as well but it was probably the weaker item of the other food on the plate. The biscuit was good and flaky and tasted even better with the strawberry butter. The oxtails with the red beans and rice was good, but the fried chicken was better. The bread pudding was good but different. I'm used to bread pudding being served hot with vanilla or butter pecan ice cream sitting on top of it. Their bread pudding was served cold with a whipped substance on top. It was okay, but I wouldn't have gotten it if I knew they served it cold. Would've been much better heated up.

On our way to the Tigers game we stopped by on Friday night. Seated right away, place was pretty empty. We split fried chicken dinner with Mac n cheese and red beans and rice. I ordered a lemonade. Lemonade was fantastic. Good came out fast, almost too fast but chicken was hot. Red beans and rice was excellent,ac n cheese not so much. Biscuit and the flavored butter also excellent.

Ventured downtown while in Detroit and business and found Fixins while looking through options online. It lives up to the standard for country-southern-soul food vittles. Ambience is loud and family fun oriented. We sat on the patio which was excellent as the AC is quite frigid inside the building. Drinks are served in 2 quart jars and the have sweet tea and Kook-Aid (red, purple and blue). We had the fried chicken and fried catfish. Each comes with two sides and chose candied yams, collard greens x2, and Mac n cheese. Also served with biscuits, cornbread and fish dinner has third option of corn fritters- which I got! The food was good, honey and filling. We exited by rolling and with leftovers.

Chicken and waffles

Once again disappointed; ordered two piece fried chicken (leg and thigh)w/charred okra; Mac & cheese ; bottled water; lemonade; and two extra v cornbread muffins. Also, second dinner with wings( very very salty and wet under skin) and potato salad. Never received lemonade or extra muffins ( just the one included with the meal). Chicken skin was a bit dried out with a wetness underneath. Mac and cheese was very gummy with a bit of a twang ( for lack of a better term) to the taste. The charred okra was very tasty and cooked as described in menu. Potato salad was reminiscent of a family reunion. And the cornbread muffins were soft and sweet. The service and the quality of the food is where this location suffers. Nothing has changed from the first visit (2 years ago) up to this point. Anyone that thinks the food is good definitely cannot cook. And best it is eatable; will not visit this location a third time.

The theme was "Yes, Chef: An exploration of culinary icons through a cocktail lens." Each drink was inspired by or dedicated to a famous culinary icon, and you can read about each one in the index. We each ordered one drink from each section. From the Opening, I chose the Diaspora Club, which was so refreshing and delicious. Then from the Principals, I chose the Chingona, which was a little bit spicy and savory but still so refreshing. To Finish, I chose the Chocolatier Cosmo, which came with a tiny house-made salted dark chocolate. I loved all three cocktails I ordered, especially the chocolatier cosmo because it was perfectly sweet and went so well with the small piece of chocolate. For food, we started off with the crispy pork belly milk bread. For my entree, I ordered the miso butter gnocchi. It was kind of on the salty side but I still really liked it. The apple sofrito added a bit of sweetness to it. For dessert, we had to get the rhubarb coffee cake, which came with strawberry ice cream. Omg one of the best desserts I've ever had!! I never thought of combining cinnamon coffee cake with rhubarb or strawberry but it's perfect, and I might have to make something like that soon. Service was great and we were seated right away at 8pm on a Saturday despite not having a reservation. Food and drinks came out promptly and timed perfectly. We spent about 1.5 hours here and we never felt rushed.

The vibe was super chill and relaxed with good music gently played in the background. Highly recommended this spot if you're in Detroit.

The foie gras was sooo rich and smooth. My sister also enjoyed her beef tartare. Both came with about four pieces of toast. I also got the burger, which is off the menu but our waiter mentioned it and when he said house made brioche AND house made cheese, I was sold. I got the double patty as recommended, which was the right decision even for me (small person who usually thinks a double is too much meat). I think because it was a smash burger, so the meat wasn't too thick. Service was excellent, very attentive and wonderful recommendations. I highly recommend this place if you're looking to have a nice meal in downtown Detroit.

The restaurant was getting full by 6pm, so having a reservation is probably best. We finally got a chance to eat here and decided on the Tasting Menu ($95/pp, the whole table has to have it) because a lot of the dishes were items we were already looking at. We started off with some drinks, all the drinks were well balanced and not too sweet-perfect. For Tequila: Good Behavior & (Mezcal): Better Off Red were super delicious. Note for the tasting menu (for the 2 of us), they plated 1 dish per course so just note that you do not each get a separate plate so I'm assuming the portions are double (although I wonder what they do for a single person and the whole trout...). I guess it's nice to share a plate so my hubby could enjoy more food but seems like a lot of plates and silverware getting used/changed with each course so it makes me wonder why each person doesn't just get their own portion. Anyway, first course: I don't really like scallops, but these scallops was cool, refreshing with a very mild scallop flavor so I really enjoyed it! Second: tomato tart with goat cheese +heirloom tomatoes salad (very good), Third: Ricotta Gnocchi (YUM), a lot of pancetta pieces, Fourth: Whole trout (the chef removed 95% of the bones, yay, loved that. It was pretty mild taste which was overall good, I liked all the different mushrooms that came with it & Last: Banana Split- feels healthy with the banana there and wow, the cherries look like Luxardo ones. Honestly, this was a good amount of food (I wasn't overly stuffed thankfully but full). I would definitely recommend the Tasting Menu (note, no modifications/subs allowed) and was glad we ordered it. The pacing was not hurried (we were not in a rush), but they can definitely accommodate (bring 2 courses out at a time), if you need to be somewhere by a certain time for a show or game. They also have a free parking lot (fenced in)! We will most definitely be back, it was an amazing night at Bar Pigalle!
