My favorite part was the decor and ambience - I loved the Motown posters and music playing in the background. The waiters were friendly and helpful. I also loved the fried chicken, mac & cheese and Lavendar Lemon Drop martini. read more

Loved the ambiance. The art and books on the wall are very on brand and black centered. The food overall was delicious. Wasn't a fan of the fried chicken. Just didn't have enough flavor. Started with fried deviled eggs and fried green tomatoes. Both were DELICIOUS and unique. Would order both again. We also created our own sample platter because we just couldn't decide lol we ordered the fried chicken 3 piece w/ Mac and yams, the oxtails with greens and the shrimp and grits. Wow was the shrimp and grits tasty. Full of flavor and was layered with flavor. The greens were well seasoned and the same with the yams. The mac was creamy and had lots of flavor. We had plenty to take home with us for leftovers. The oxtails had a good flavor but could have been cooked longer. Was falling off the bone but the meat itself was a little tough in places. Our server was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. Her food and drink recommendations were appreciated. read more

Great Ambiance. The music gives that cool vibe, to perfectly pair with the Detroit themed decor throughout. I definitely love the decor as a true Detroiter they hit some legendary pics. Koolaid and Faygo themes along with sports and Entertainment. Now the food had its highs and lows. Fried green Tomatoes and Caesar salad with those cornbread croutons 10/10 highly recommend. The sides were Mid to ok the Chicken was a little heavily breaded for my liking. The Old Fashion was syrupy definitely could use some work there. The pricing is very respectable for Downtown as well. If you plan to go definitely make reservations cause the walk ins is limited as it's always slappin. I would keep this on my shortlist to sit at the bar and watch a game for Sure. Also would recommend you try it for yourself. read more

Fixins - Fried Green Tomatoes - Soul Food Near Me - Detroit, Michigan

Good and lively place to eat. Friendly vibe food pretty consistent with the taste. The fried chicken too undercooked, it's a large piece.

Ya'll have to eat here! As a redneck, ridge runner and hillbilly I'm an expert reviewer. I had the southern fried chicken, greens and coleslaw w/ biscuit. Damn! My Mamaw would be proud! Service was friendly at the bar and hostess made me feel at home. Thanks and I'll be fixin to head back here soon! read more

Ordered online for carryout - fried chicken, mac & cheese, greens, and waffle. Order was ready quick and on time. When I got home, I found that I was missing part of the order, the greens. The rest of the food was really good and I would go back but I'm still pissed about the greens. Wasted money read more

Good food and good service. The catfish dinner could have had a larger portion of fish.

Came here with local Detroit family members. Was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the tasty food, friendly and efficient service and beautiful decor. Loved the nostalgic portraits of Motown greats and African American magazine covers. Even has Kool- Aid on the menu. Everyone in our party of 12 had a fun and delicious food experience. Can't wait to come back to Fixins when I visit Detroit again. read more

My server needs recognition I forget her name but I remember she's a Tennessee girl. She recommended the smothered fried chicken and as a cocktail to drink the Sac Town Mango Lemonade was perfect for the weather. The fried chicken was an absolute marvel, the gravy- the best part. I should have asked for a side of the gravy to dip the fried skin of the chicken. The Mac and beans had the right amount of spice. Love the music and layout. read more

The food was delicious. I went with the oxtails and they did not disappoint. I had a drink from the bar which was delicious as well. Service was on point. We did not have reservations though and we had a pretty lengthy wait so reservations are recommended. read more

Fixins - Bout to see what's all the hype about - Soul Food Near Me - Detroit, Michigan

Doris approved! Went for lunch (carry out). I walked but parking is street or garage. Z lot or the opera house parking. Maybe best bet. Street is limited. Was greeted with a smile, ordered: The deep-fried deviled eggs, fish sandwich with rice and beans. Everything was hot was delicious. The fish sandwich had a big Mac type sauce to it. Pickles were crunchy, bread had the right amount of butter. Fish tasted great. Rice and beans was the first thing I ate perfect combo I loved it! Good proportion for a side. The deep fried deviled eggs were really nice still hot crunchy. Everything was really good. Also, I talked to the manager a couple days later he was outside throwing salt. Everything is freshly brought in. Prep starts at 7 AM. Super impressive. I sat at the bar but the vibe was welcoming and super cool. I wasn't offered a water or asked if I wanted anything to drink why I waited but my food came out pretty quick. I encourage you to try! Food was outstanding. read more

I am in LOVE. This is my new go to for soul food. The food was fresh, hot, a seasoned but not salty. We ordered a variety of things to really try out the menu and it was good. The drinks were also good. The chicken is juicy, oxtails fall of the bone, deviled eggs are delish, yams, greens and Mac good. Also tried peach cobbler and Red velvet cake. Staff is new so they are still working out some kinks but everyone was friendly and efficient. The owner was there too getting everyone before we went it. I will def be back often. read more

I ordered the Ms. Ruth's plate, choosing macaroni and cheese, okra, and greens. I mentioned to the bartender that I was vegetarian, and since she was as well, she recommended this option. After I placed my order, she revealed they also had a vegan menu, which I wish I had known earlier, I likely would have tried the blackened tofu instead. I also tried the Mother Rose martini, which was good but not particularly strong. The food was fine, but nothing particularly memorable. I don't anticipate returning. read more

Great location, ambiance was nice, the food above average, however the service could really use some improvements...

I've been to the Cali location back in june2025 and it was an awesome experience. (5stars) I've never been to a restaurant that was so efficient. Servers were great, food was hot and good. Manager checked on us. The entire experience was great! Detoit location was (3.5-4) stars. The host was awesome. It was our 52nd wedding anniversary and we had reservations but for a hour later but we were early and she work us in. It was packed. Servers were good, food was not hot, as though it had been sitting for a minute. That was my disappointment in addition to the chicken was fried just a little too crispy. Manager never came by to check on us as in Cali. Might try again and might not. read more

Great food, service and music! My family was in town to visit so we decided ti give Fixins a try because I've heard nothing but good things. The staff was friendly from the time we walked in the door. Ashley was a great waitress who was attentive and friendly. I started with the fried green tomatoes. They came with a couple of hot peppers that are definitely hot! I ordered the fried fish with greens and Mac & cheese. Everything was delicious! I didn't need to add anything to any of the dishes. The serving sizes are big, especially the fried chicken. The DJ set the perfect atmosphere with R&B from multiple decades. The music was played at the perfect volume to allow you to enjoy the music and your conversations. Reservations are recommended because the restaurant stays packed. I can't wait to go back! read more

My friend and I decided last minute to try this restaurant when we got there they were told that they were doing reservation only but just our luck someone canceled their reservation and we were able to get seated right away. The restaurant is HUGE! Lots of seating, great nostalgic, Detroit black history decor. I opted for the two piece fried chicken with mac & cheese and sweet potatoes and I had a side of the gravy that usually go on the smothered chicken. Everything was very good huge pieces of chicken lots of flavor with the mac & cheese and yams. The Kool-Aid was good! The service was a little slow, and they did forget some items that comes with the meals like cornbread and biscuits but I wouldn't rate it too badly because they did just open and still working out some of the kinks. I have already told my friends and family about this restaurant and want to come back and try it again later on in the year. read more

"Be sure to not make your reservation at the location is CALIFORNIA, like I did" Fixins was quite the delightful experience, the food was great, but soul food I feel is a difficult restaurant choice because everyone has their own taste in what they want in any specific soul food dish. With that being said, the apps were amazing, the entrees were quite tasty, I could make a few things better but overall, great! The service was phenomenal and the kool aid was even better, but again, to avoid waiting an hour and 20 mins like my friends and I, please be sure to make your reservation at the correct location in Detroit and not California because they're BUSY. We even got to see the NBA player who owns the place! Give it a go guys, great decor and atmosphere! read more

In town for a conference and saw Fixins from my hotel (Hilton Garden Inn) window. Was waiting on a coworker to arrive, but was hungry, so made the short walk to Fixins. Had the two piece fried chicken, black eyed peas and grits. The food was amazing and everyone there was super friendly, super attentive and ensured that I was happy and didn't need anything else. I left and came back with my coworker about two hours later and ordered the deep fried deviled eggs and the fish nuggets on recommendation and even though I was overly full, I couldn't stop eating them. My coworker ordered the chicken and waffles and loved them. The next night we right back there sitting at the bar ordering dinner. We both got the gumbo and split an order of the fried green tomatoes and everything was delicious. I also ordered the adult kool aid and it was great. If it were up to me, we would be eating there again tomorrow, but am letting my coworker choose this time. The atmosphere was great with sports playing on the bar tvs and great music playing. I cannot recommend this place enough. Definitely one of my favorite restaurants that I have eaten at in a long time and I travel a ton for work and personal life and always eat out. read more

Family from LA came in. They love the LA location! I've also been to the LA location. Here, I ordered chicken and waffles and grits. The waffle was not able to melt the butter. The grits crumbled not creamy at all. I was underwhelmed and look forward to putting the chicken in the air fryers and the waffle in the oven with the butter. read more

Food was good, service was great. I wish they played Motown music though. With them having photos of Lionel Richie Aretha Franklin Michael Jackson Gladys Knight Smokey Robinson would have been good to play their records. Drinks was a big no for me. I had the blue raspberry margarita, my husband had the hurricane he liked them both and he finished my drink I tasted his drink as well just didn't like it.
