I've reviewed the Carson location a few months back and I fell under the Five Guys spell after that. In fact, I almost even attempted a Five Guys run all the way from Central OC to their Cerritos location. (Similar to what Harold & Kumar did in the movie Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle just minus the White Castle and the marijuana) So when the OC Register decided to do basically tens of articles (*cough cough FREE ADVERTISING) announcing the opening of Five Guys in Orange, imagine my reaction. It went a little something like this:
(Me looking at Fast Food Maven blog.)
ME: Hmmm...wonder what's going on...
(Me looking at Five Guys article)
ME: Yeah, they've been all talk about that location opening
(Me seeing what date it opens)
ME: Holy....FUCK YES!!!!!!!!!!! FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!
Was I there on opening day? No. I felt like Mr. Krabs from Spongebob that day and decided to not spend money on lunch that day and didn't want to wait in the line.
Was I there ASAP? Nope. I was too lazy to drive from Tustin to Orange.
Was I there when I had a few friends interested in trying it and decided to chaporone the trip because I had been to the one in Carson before? Yes I was.
Now the BIG difference between this location and the one in Carson was obvious the day I went. It was the LINE and the amount of people in the restaurant. The line went outside the door and wrapped around and took around 20 mins to get to the counter. The hype in the one in Carson has OBVIOUSLY died down where I was the only one in line, in fact, that was actually pretty bad being that it was my first time and the staff tried to rush me to make my order. It was also pretty hard to find a table, and the restaurant was (in the tradition of In-N-Out) obviously VERY noisy. And with the crowd came the trash. It was pretty understaffed in the dining area so there were their peanut shells all over the floor, and tables...and even the counter. But can you blame them for that? People are giving In-N-Out more points for being a cleaner restaurant, well INO doesn't give out free peanuts, and the Five Guys in Carson was SUPER CLEAN. It's obviously a crowd thing.
Now let's get on to the part people actually care about, the food. The first time I went, I took on a Junior Cheeseburger with mayo, grilled onions, tomatoes and lettuce. This time around I decided to upgrade to their regular (double pattied) Bacon Cheeseburger with the same ingredients and boy, it was just great! Juicy beef with cheeseopoloza on top. They also used fresh lettuce (take a tip from that Carl's Jr?) and fresh tomatoes. But WAIT A SEX! Don't people boast about Five Guys having BACON. Well sadly, the bacon was barely found on my burger. It was really just a waste of another 50 cents. I really only had a few bites where I could actually taste the bacon. It was really just like they crumbled a few bacon bites on top of the burger. And the bacon was a little overcooked for my liking as well. Grilled onions were also unnoticeable and disapointing unlike last time where the grilled onions made the burger the star. Fries were delicious like last time and me and my friends decided to share the (large enough for an army) large fry but the amount they gave us was about the same size as the small in Carson. Hmmm....don't people BOAST about how big your fries are??? The free peanuts are nice to much on although they're not like freshly roasted nuts. The great thing about them is that you can use your fries cup when you're done and fill up that cup with peanuts and transfer it to your bag. Repeat 3 times and you got a solid amount of peanuts for the ride home. Really you're not supposed to but I love to live a life of danger.
For those little mistakes, I'll have to knock down a star. The burger was pretty good (not as good as the one in Carson) and the fries match the burger unlike INO. People always complain about the price of Five Guys and let me just say this, Five Guys makes some BADASS burgers that I would pick any day over In-N-Out. Five Guys is just a more manlier burger than In-N-Out. Better quality ingredients and the burgers seem a lot bigger than INO's. Especially comparing a Double Double to a regular Cheeseburger here. The thing I hate most about INO are their fries though, a lot of my friends said they preferred INO fries and honestly, I don't get them. INO fries are skinny, limp and soggy and sometimes undercooked. Five Guys fries are well done, hearty enough to get a real taste of the potato and fried to perfection. I would pay the extra money over INO to come to Five Guys because it's just a great burger. As far as will Five Guys overtake INO in CA, not gonna happen. I see FG being a bigger threat to Carl's Jr. rather to INO.
