    Small Fries $2.59 (2/09)
    Vivian C.

Recently, on Phantom Gourmet, I was exposed to the Five Guys way of serving french fries - they stick the styrofoam cup of fries into the paper bag, and they top it off more even more fries... sounded good to me! The oily bag is their logo... that didn't sound so good since greasy seats aren't my thing. After my morning of shopping, I stopped off at Five Guys Burger and Fries in Dedham just to grab an order of their fries - $2.72 (after tax) for a small. They served it up to me quick, and I stuck it in a plastic bag I had on hand. Noticing the box of peanuts on the counter, I crushed the shell off one and popped the nut into my mouth. A sign by the door requests that peanuts are eaten on the premises in consideration of allergic folk in the neighborhood - that's considerate. I filled two take out plastic sauce containers with Heinz ketchup (is there any other kind?) and noticed 1) little lemon juice thingies (ReaLemon)... I wonder what they're for? and 2) a sign listing the potato of the day (that was neat). Once I got in the car, I quickly took out the napkins (lots!) and ate a few fries. Hot, crispy, but could stand a little more salt. But I love that it is the kind of fry that looks like it was a potato in a past life. :)

A breath of fresh air in this chain-infested corner of Dedham! The hamburgers are griddled before your very eyes and served up fresh with the toppings of your choice. Plus this little mom'n'pop organization allows you to order the 'Regular'( two patties) or a 'Junior' version (one patty) depending on how hungry you might be. They proudly display the town where that day's potatoes came from so you get a sense of history and context with your French fries-- I basically felt like I was eating at a Farmer's Market! Two do-it-yourself Coke machines allow you to come up with outrageous drink choices like Orange Cream Diet Coke. As with my Second Amendment Rights--I don't want to own a Glock any more than I want to drink Raspberry Lime Root Beer but it's always nice to have the option. Really can't say enough good things about this lunch mecca. Minus 1 star for a small-ish dining area and minus another for the eventual scientific finding that links 5 Guys to triple bybass surgeries the world over.

    Free peanuts!

We walked into a space that sits at street level with a seating area handling the volume of a busy lunch or dinner crowd reasonably well, and the lively atmosphere made it a comfortable place to settle into rather than just a grab and go counter. The ShackBurger is the obvious anchor and holds up to the brand's reputation, juicy and well assembled with the cheese and sauce distribution landing evenly across the patty in a way that keeps each bite consistent. The Shack Stack is worth upgrading to if you want something more substantial, and the shroom burger is a strong option for anyone who wants something different from the standard beef lineup. The cheese fries are among the most ordered sides and are the right call over the standard fries if you want something that holds up better through the meal. Consistency is the main variable worth noting. Temperature and timing can be hit or miss depending on how busy the location is running, with burgers occasionally coming out on the cooler side when the kitchen is stacking orders. Getting there during a slightly off peak window tends to produce a better result, and online ordering pickup can be uneven in terms of staff attentiveness at this location. The overall experience remains solid for a fast casual burger stop in a busy outdoor mall setting, but calibrating expectations on timing makes the visit smoother.

In addition, I ordered no pickles and it was covered in pickles. Setting aside the fact that Shake Shack is already way overpriced for mediocre fast food, this is ridiculous. I might as well have gone to Burger King for the same quality but at least pay half the price. The quality has gone way down, likely because they keep trying to add all sorts of items to their menu that make it more work for the employees. You want a good fast food burger, go to Five Guys (much better french fries). I would give it zero stars but gave it 1 star is because when I complained they refunded my money. But that does not change the fact that my meal was unappetizing and not what I ordered.

For the record: under the ADA (and Massachusetts law, which follows it), a business can ask exactly two questions -- is this a service animal required due to a disability, and what task is it trained to perform. That's it. No vest, no ID card, no paperwork required, full stop. I said as much, was met with attitude, stepped out to keep the peace, came back in with documentation anyway (which I didn't legally owe him), and got a passive-aggressive "well you could've shown me that at the beginning" -- followed by a genuinely bizarre stare-down over the counter. Charming. Then, while waiting on my order, I made the mistake of taking a video of the (admittedly cute) interior -- 100-year-old diner car, hard not to want a keepsake -- and got yelled at for filming, with a pointed accusation that my brother outside was "also filming," said like it was a crime. Meanwhile this place has an active social media presence built on customers doing exactly that. You can't crowdsource your Instagram content and then treat a phone camera like a weapon. Oh, and the hot dog itself: $5 for a boiled dog on white bread, no toasting, no char, nothing. A sad little snack to cap off a genuinely unpleasant interaction. The building has real history. The guy behind the counter does not deserve it.
