My late Sunday morning visit had stress potential due to a line, but they banged it out effortlessly and I was seated in no time. Typical nostalgic decor with entertainers of the 1950s, keeping with the diner's name. -- Patty Melt: This is the reason I came, as I'm searching for great ones, and theirs is right up there. American cheese (a little outside the standard Swiss), choice of bread (I went marble rye), and optional add-ons (I chose grilled onions, which you'd think would be standard). Excellent execution. Griddled bread with just enough butter, just enough crunch, and no sogginess. Beef soft, with a loose grind, cooked to a juicy medium rare, and with nice beef flavor (too many diner versions use stiff, el cheapo patties; this was quality sourcing a couple steps up). And melty cheese and soft onions complementing while letting the beef sing loudest. No one ingredient was artisanal-level premium, but every aspect was handled beautifully. -- Fries (included with the Patty Melt): Alas, the dreaded "coated" kind, an obvious frozen product. Hot, crisp, and plentiful, so it could've been worse. No biggie; the patty melt was good enough for this not to matter. I can't emphasize enough how well-run the place is. The friendly veteran servers move like clockwork and could easily drop a "honey" on you with every interaction, but that would merely add a delay. Instead, they show their dedication with sincere smiles, initiative, and time-learned precision. It's a joy to behold. Normally I'd hold off on a 5 based on such a small sample size, but the food and shakes I saw going out all looked good, and that service excellence cliched it. read more

Wish we'd tried the 50's Diner sooner! The sign outside is faded and easy to miss, but they do not need it. The restaurant was packed, they clearly have a following and regulars, and the inside of the restaurant is in great shape. Ignore the sign, they have good priorities. There was a line out the door when we got there, but service moved quick. The waitstaff was friendly but efficient. We enjoyed the food very much. We got a greek omelet (with no tomatoes) and a western omelet and an iced and hot coffee. I always feel like the greek omelet says a lot about a diner, and this one had real kalamata olives and good feta. A+ from both my husband and I. I LOVED the pink formica and of course the requisite 50's wall decor. The bar seating looked fun, but we sat in a booth. We'll be back, I'm going to want some grapenuts pudding sometime. read more

1/5 -- Shockingly Poor Customer Service One of the worst customer-service experiences I've had in a restaurant. We waited in line for about 20 minutes. During that time, I watched the host treat an Asian woman with her family in a remarkably unfriendly manner. She had been ahead of us in line but was told to wait outside simply because the rest of her family was parking the car. After discussion she got a table! At the same time, people behind us repeatedly tried to push ahead - so instead of being welcomed and properly organized by the staff - we literally had to defend our place in line. Then the host called for a party of two to sit at the counter. I misunderstood and thought she meant a table for two. When I realized the mistake and asked if we could change, the answer was astonishing: you need to go back outside and start again at the very end of the line. No attempt to help. No flexibility. No common sense. Just: back to the end of the line. I'm visiting from Europe to see my son, and we had only two hours before I needed to leave for my flight. We therefore had no choice but to walk out without eating. I've traveled extensively and eaten at countless restaurants in Europe and the US and I genuinely cannot remember experiencing this level of indifference toward customers. The food here may have a great reputation - but hospitality is about more than food. It's about how you treat people -- and our experience was absolutely appalling. Do not think they care more then only business - this was their true color! And finally: CASH ONLY in 2026 ‍. If you don't have cash - you're directed to an ATM where you may incur additional fees from restaurant. As someone who works professionally with financial matters in my home country - "a cash-only business model" combined with an on-site ATM certainly raises an eyebrow!! Terrible unseasoned food as well as portion sizes. I got corned beef hash for $9 thinking it would be a decent size and it was so small. Maybe 4 teaspoons big. When a whole can costs $2. Ridiculous. On top of that they are very racist in the diner. If you are poc or anything other than white you will get treated differently. Disgusting servers and food and will not be coming here again. Very racist staff ! I am not for the victimization, but I went to this restaurant at least 5 times before, I never had an issue; today I was with my mother who's wearing a Hijab ... They switched their behavior, I was met with rude comments, they said no to accommodation they gave to others but not to us, and when we wanted to leave 2 of the waitress were shouting and they clearly said we don't want you here. They even screamed at my mom for forgetting her phone since we left in so much distress and anger. If you are sensitive to this type of behavior, this place is not the right place for you. read more

Let me set the scene. A grown woman, who once ate fried dough baskets here with her grandfather every Sunday after church, returns many years later from out of state. I brought my best friend, who also grew up coming here, and my fiancé. I was SO excited. I traveled from Puerto Rico to Dedham to come here specifically. I did not get the fried dough basket. What I got was a 20-minute wait in the cold and a hostess operating under the impression that a party of four is only "complete" when all four members are physically wedged into the booth like sardines in a tin. Our fourth was minutes away. MINUTES. What were we supposed to do -- get to the front of the line, say "no thank you," and return to the back of the line outside? We were hungry. Once seated, the waitress informed us that our fourth person could not join us and there would be no add-ons allowed. We ordered our drinks. When I asked about this policy, she raised her voice and told us how busy they are and that they just can't allow it and that's their policy. I asked, "So if somebody comes in, they can't sit with us even if they're not ordering?" She said no. Two minutes later, she came back asking if we were ready to order, one of our party was still reading the menu. She raised her voice again, saying the manager was AWARE of the SITUATION and the kitchen really needed our order in a hurry. Based on the way we were being treated, we decided to take our business elsewhere. As we stood up, we overheard the two waitresses say to each other, "Good, it's for the best!" She asked if I wanted to speak to the manager, and I said yes. I explained how I'd been coming here since childhood, how excited I was to come back, and that I'd never been treated with such rudeness at a business in my life. It is what it is. A noisy neighborhood staple. Been eating there for more than 14 years. Food is cheap. Recently the home made fries were a mix of burnt and undercooked. They make an attempt to rectify mistakes barely. Will not comp ever. They have a seating algorithm not based on your arrival time. It's Families before groups, groups before couples, couples before solo diners, white before black and friendly neighbors before anyone else. Couples and solo diners sit by the bathrooms in the back not in the booth. The friendly local solo male diner may get the booth for tips. Female only waitstaff. Male waitstaff might add some novelty. Cash only. ATM available. Go there if you love the menu more than the shenanigans and don't expect an apology, no matter what happens. read more

Myself and 1 elderly guest came in today and we waited to be seen for 15 minutes as they seated folks at the bar. We didn't get a smile, greeting, not even a "please wait while we get ourselves together " we just stood there looking insanely ridiculous!!!! I was surprised that they were cash only but said okay knowing I would need to use the ATM inside the restaurant. I was greeted promptly and being a solo diner asked if I wanted to sit at the counter or a table. I chose a table. The menu was at the table and had both breakfast and lunch items. The interior was decorated 50s themed with decor and pictures. Service was quick and fast price point was great! I got the breakfast burrito for 6.50 and a side of French toast for 3.70 along with a cranberry juice. To total was less than $15! Great deal and yummy breakfast. My boyfriend and I came here for lunch on President's Day and had an enjoyable experience. The diner does not take reservations and there was a long line, but it moved pretty quickly. (A sign of a great restaurant is when there's a line out the door)! We waited about 20-25 mins to be seated. This place is cash-only, but that's part of its fifties era charm. They are not open for dinner, but their breakfast and lunch menus are huge and have a lot of variety. The restrooms were clean, which is of great importance to me when writing a review! The food was fresh and delicious- I ordered the Chicken Cobb Salad and he got the Classic Club Sandwich with fries and a side of fruit. We were pleased with the value. The portions were generous and we spent about $40 for the two of us. Our server was attentive and checked in on us frequently. The ambience is low key, casual, and very much how I envision a real fifties diner would have been. There are photos of Elvis on the wall! Even though it's busy, the tables are spaced far enough apart so that it doesn't feel crowded. It was actually pretty quiet and we had no trouble hearing each other. Came here for breakfast a local spot very vintage spot old school! Has a nice atmosphere! I got 2 eggs over easy bacon (crispy) you get home fries and I got French toast with butter and powered sugars, cup of coffee. The service was excellent my server was welcoming friendly and made sure my cup was refilled when almost empty. Will be back again. the bathroom was clean and the tables where clean in restaurant! Though I wasn't expecting it. I tried my best two drink both and took the second in a to go cup. It was very light and the cream on top was delicious. Had the hot dog with fries. It was good. My waitress was very nice. The only downfall was being placed at the table at the men's room door. Sat down at the table and a server came by and took the last patrons check/money. 5 minutes later another server comes by questioning whether we took the money and we told them another server took it. Did not believe us, getting weird looks across the room. Comes by again with another server and asks us the same question which we gave the same answer. I've always been curious as I've seen a line out the door at times. This is a great hidden treasure, the food came out fast and warm. If you like the traditional Diner feel, this is truly it. Feels cozy and traditional. It's cash only so make sure you have some offhand but I also think there's a nearby ATM if not inside. Busy inside but we got lucky and a seat right away, I think the customers are mostly locals which is nice as well - hey neighbors! We have been going to the 50's Diner for years, but there was a period of time that we just didn't. There is no reason for that. We rediscovered it a few years ago. We have not been disappointed. The food is prepared well and very tasty. I'm picky as to how I want my food prepared and have been accommodated each time. My husband always ordered 2 over easy, bacon, home fries & raisin toast. Nothing left on plate. I like the Eggs Benedict, but with the Hollandaise sauce on the side. Always done to my specification. Coffee cup is always refilled and promptly, which is a big plus with my husband. Another big thing with my husband is the memorabilia of the 50's on the walls. I visited the Diner today, just before noon. It wasn't too busy, no line and we were seated right away and given menus. But that's where things went south. There were several servers sitting around chatting with each other but none came to our table. After a few minutes another couple were seated across from us and were immediately served with coffee and then placed their order. Meanwhile we were not served, so after a few more minutes we left. Very cool retro feel here at the 50s diner. I stopped in here for a quick breakfast before going kayaking for the day. Parking is easy. Sat up front at the counter on one of the stools. There's about 8 seats there. Waitress was over and I got my coffee within minutes and put my order in. Decor is cute. Specials on board up front I had eggs, sausage and bacon. Bacon and sausage were great. Eggs were just ok. The guy next to me ordered pancakes and they looked fluffy and delicious. He also had hot chocolate with whipped cream. I definitely will be back to order that. And apple pie muffins! Smelled fantastic! Soft music in the background. They have a suggestion box here. I think that's cool.
