Caffè Nero - Almond Croissant

I stopped by here this past Wednesday by myself for my morning coffee. I happened to be traveling…read morefor work and whenever I looked for a coffee shop on Yelp, Cafe Nero was the closest one and so I headed on over. It's located in Wellesley right at a T stop which I imagine is both good for Cafe Nero as well as good for riders who enjoy good coffee. In any case, the inside consists of a place to order your food, with displays for pastries and other goodies, and then a seating area behind that. I felt somewhat rushed here while ordering (maybe good for riders but not good for me on this morning) and ended up choosing a latte before adding on an almond croissant right before paying. My drink and pastry were ready quickly and I was on my way headed back to my office. I first tried the almond croissant which I thought was good. It was buttery and flaky with a nice almond flavor as you would expect. After that I tried the coffee which I also thought was good. It was deep and rich next to the milk and with a nice ratio, I could easily taste both. The bottom line for me is that I would stop by here again in the future. I enjoyed both my coffee and croissant from here and just wish that I hadn't felt as rushed.

I love their chocolate croissants, raspberry shortbread cookies, and chocolate-dipped macaroons. My husband loves their ginger cookies, carrot cake cupcakes, and pecan rolls. In the summer, they also have delicious Raspberry Lime Rickeys. Earlier this week, we took our drive to Quebrada and bought our yummies. I was getting a straw for my Rickey, and my husband headed out the door, thinking I was right behind him. When he realized I wasn't there, he returned to the store to find me. He walks with crutches, and on his way back into the store, something happened and he fell. At that very second, everyone in the store went running to help him. I helped to get him up, and the entire store staff went into helper mode. One person brought him paper towels (he had hit his nose and was bleeding), someone else brought band-aids, someone brought a bag full of ice, and someone else brought him some water. They asked him to have a seat, and kept checking to see how he was and if they could do anything else to help. The manager even gave me her personal phone number. I assured her that this wasn't the store's fault. She understood, but still wanted me to have her number. Everyone there remained calm and knew exactly what to do. It was an extraordinary experience. I did use the manager's number to text her my heartfelt thanks, and also emailed the company's owners to tell them about the experience, and to praise the staff at the Wellesley store (as well as the customers, who were also extremely compassionate). Even if their pastries weren't so delicious, I would return the Quebrada in Wellesley forever because of how they handled this mishap. But their pastries ARE delicious, so you should go there and try some!

Chocolate Croissant: Great for people who are all about the chocolatey. Big chunks falling out. For people who are all about a proper croissant, the place down the street is far superior, unfortunately, and with better parking. The croissant here was soft, not flaky. Bendy, not brittle. Blueberry Muffin: Had this on a previous visit a year ago (not pictured). Much like the croissant, it was okay. Overall experience, just okay. Nothing wrong with it, but some bakeries have me thinking about what looked great in the case that I didn't have, and might have next time. Not the case here.

My husband's burger was perfection -- cooked medium rare, sharp cheddar, and fresh toppings. I can never turn away a good 1/2 and 1/2... I ordered 1/2 chicken salad and 1/2 garden salad. I received the tuna salad instead, which was fine because I like tuna as well, but this tuna salad needed more salt and pepper and less walnuts. Too many walnuts. The green salad was fresh - I loved the house dressing! The ahi tuna nachos were awful. The tuna had zero flavor and we could barely taste a vinaigrette. No acid at all. It wasn't even appealing to look at. The only thing that had flavor was the wasabi crème, which was perfectly flavored. Decorated in Cape Cod, New England style. Ample seating and booths. Beautiful sunny room. First time sitting at the bar, which was the vibe we wanted on our date and super happy we did. Service was great -- the bartender was very attentive but gave us space to chat. We've visited The Cottage many times over the years and this was the first time I wasn't happy with everything. Chalking it up to a bad day and will be back.

My kids and their cousins came to enjoy it as one of their go to dishes. Just the right amount of spice and good crunch from the crispy nachos. A lot of iterations of Cottage have come and gone since we were first introduced to it almost twenty years ago. They still serve passionfruit iced tea that hits with a nice tart and a hint of sweetness from the orange. Their sandwiches are tasty, I had a blackened cod. The slaw was a touch too runny, it absorbed the heat of the sandwich and overwhelmed the poor onion ring. The cod survived the onslaught, though, and was well cooked and seasoned. Avoid the charcuterie. It was a mess that looked like it was sourced from the deli counter at the local grocery store. Service was friendly and prompt. Still a decent reliable spot in Wellesley!
