Here is a great example of how someone with a really nasty attitude can bring down the rating of an otherwise (seemingly) decent place to eat. I went to the Five Guys on Summer Street to get a couple of cheeseburgers to go. Simple. Direct. The cashier (...my receipt says her name is Sofia) hits me with a close to $17.00 bill and I was like, "Whoa, wait a sec. Two cheeseburgers are THAT expensive?" Long story short, she was charging me for the $7.69 cheeseburgers and not the $5.69 cheeseburgers. In her defense, she did NOTHING wrong. She charged me for what I asked for, but MY confusion was with Five Guys' definition of a cheeseburger. The world's definition of a cheeseburger is basically a patty, cheese, two buns and whatever other toppings you ask for. Five Guys' definition of a cheeseburger is a DOUBLE patty, cheese, etc. I asked, "Wouldn't that be a double cheeseburger?" From here on, she became very flippant with me, telling me this is how Five Guys labels its burgers and that what I actually wanted was a "Little Cheeseburger" which is the single-pattied variety. I think she viewed my questions as personal attacks, but they truly were just interrogatories to help me make sense of this place. I asked, "So, basically what you're telling me is that... what the world refers to as a double cheeseburger, you guys call a cheeseburger... and what the world refers to as a cheeseburger, you guys call a LITTLE cheeseburger. Is that basically it?" And even though I wasn't TRYING to agitate her, her voice was ramping up significantly, getting more and more aggressive, as she continued to snap at me. Her overall attitude was basically, "It is what it is" which is fine, but I was just trying to make sense out of the burger nomenclature; not start a holy war. Frankly, the burgers themselves weren't even that great. Not sure if Sofia had anything to do with that, though I hope not. Anyway, I'm a big fan of giving a restaurant good reviews when they deliver great food and great service, but Sofia just ruined my time there with her nasty attitude. And I didn't even get the order right they didn't put tomato or pickle on my cheeseburger. Let me be clear, I work in the fast casual food industry as a shift manager and I am not one to argue because there is always something going on that the guest doesn't know about. That being said, I was standing right next to the pick up counter and waited for thirty minutes for a single burger. That was it. The woman tried arguing with me saying it had already been called when I had watched people who came in 20 minutes after me get their food, finish it, and leave while still standing there. What on earth is the appeal of this place? Honestly, the best part about visiting Five Guys is the free peanuts, unless you are allergic, so in that case just stay away. Five Guys looked promising when I walked in- the space is clean and well organized and the girl at the counter enthusiastically guided me through the menu. I was pretty excited about being able to pick as many toppings as I wanted, but by the time I got my burger I was really disappointed. The burger was maybe a quarter pound of beef and I opted for lettuce, pickles, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, A-1 sauce and cheese. When I took my first bite I was surprised- it tasted like nothing. Seriously. No flavor. The burger itself was so teeny and not at all seasoned. The mushrooms were right out of a can and the onions were barely grilled. Also, the burger was cold. I don't know how, but it was. My fries were oversalted and the portion was ridiculously large. Awesome addition to the finance district/downtown crossing! They just opened.and had a crew of 15 people working on a Wednesday night. Kudos for staffing up accordingly. If you've never been to a Five Guys before, some important things to note: Little burger is a single patty. Regular burger are two patties. For being new and just opening in the past week...they did a good job. There was a little line forming with people waiting for their burger..but that wasn't a problem for us. We sat at a table, enjoying the free peanuts. So, if you have to wait....relax, grab a chair, and eat the peanuts. When I got my burger I was impressed with the quality - so much better than the ones I get at their Medford location, hoping this quality control lasts..or maybe, it's just for the opening?? Perfect green lettuce, plump tomato, tons of mushrooms (i asked for lots), moderate amount of grilled onions, and BBQ sauce..exactly as requested (little sauce). My burger was PERFECT. Hubby ordered two little burgers..and one with bacon. They forgot his bacon. (Opps!) Not a problem, he went back up to the counter and came back with like 5 strips of bacon. I was almost certain that I had reviewed this place in the past, but what the hell, may as well put up a review now. This is a short review because there are just so many 5Guys all over the country. This 5Guys doesn't seem to be significantly different from them. You can really only order a few things: burgers, fries, hot dogs, and I think milkshakes. The burgers here have the added factor of customizability, so you can put whatever you like on it. I think other than cheese and bacon, you can put unlimited toppings on it. This includes onions, mushrooms, and various other things that one would generally put on a burger (for more options, please refer to the menu in the photos). However, that doesn't solve the one major issue of the burger itself. The quality of the patty is only okay, and the buns aren't anything special either. No matter how many ingredients you stuff in, the quality of the burger itself has to be able to stand on its own, and I felt like the burger at 5Guys just doesn't. I don't get it. I know people who practically peed themselves when we heard there was a Five Guys coming to Downtown. Why? Peanuts are cool, I like peanuts. Fries are cool, I like fries. Oh Five Guys... I experienced you first in upstate NY, and this is not how a burger should taste. It sucks, too, because you're right around the corner from my job! How am I supposed to get a quick, cheap, tasty burger now? I was psyched when I saw this location coming to town. They're right next to a bunch of mediocre restaurants, and to be honest, some days I just really want a burger. Today was a sad day for burger-wanting-Lauren. I got a regular hamburger with all the toppings because they will let you do that, and I wanted to just taste the quality of the meat and peal off the toppings I didn't like. I wound up taking everything apart because the meat tasted AWFUL, and I've been to plenty of burger joints and messed up my own at home. I can't put my finger on what was wrong, but it wasn't good meat, and I didn't wind up finishing it. They get 2 stars instead of 1 because, despite the line, surly service and overall weird smell in the place, I love their fries. I'm really disappointed having tried it a couple of times how people are bragging about the quality of the meat. I don't get it, they don't even salt&pepper it and it's just tasteless - the cheese, which is just a cheese'a-like product doesn't even melt in the bun as they don't put it into the burger when it's in the grill, but once it gets off of it. A regular bar burger tastes better than this, the fries are also not my favs, really fat and burning your mouth if you opt for the Cajun version. I was Downtown last night, minding my own business, and said "Hey, when did that place get there?" I'd never seen Five Guys in that spot before. Maybe I just don't frequent the area enough. Anyway, I walked in and noticed that the place is open late until 10PM (Woohoo!). Businesses should learn from this. I walked in to take a look at their menu from a distance, because I didn't want to be THAT person standing in line, confusing people behind me who are actually ready to order. It was at that point that the people behind the counter smiled and beckoned me over. They explained their menu, but it's the way that they did it. They used actual charisma and knew the product. Who does that? They do! I'm a sucker for good customer service, especially when it's a young person. (Jesus, I sound old saying that.) Anyway, I freakin' loved it! I was sold! HEY MANAGERS, you have some awesome employees/salespeople on your staff! They're organized/professional back there. You can see the entire burger magic happen. They explained to me that the regular sized burger has two patties, and the small is a single patty of the same size. And you don't have to pay extra for toppings?! Sweet heavens! I'll take it! They don't do combo meals, though. That makes my frugal wallet cry, but I guess I'll deal with it. Well, anyway, I waited for a bit for them to cook my burger...cook...on a flat top grill...cook...not microwave...cook. O.O They also make cajun fries. I watched them seasoning them, and made a mental note to try it the next time. I watched them load the toppings onto that fluffy sesame seed bun, stack two patties and cheese onto the bottom bun, and wrap it in foil, and couldn't wait to get it home to try it. And when I did...mmmmhhmmmm. It didn't fold onto itself like a soggy mess. It stacked up well. It was nice and juicy. I think it could have been seasoned a little better, but like I said, the bread and the toppings held up very well. That the toppings are free. The Jetson's style soda machines that allow you to mix and match flavors. The serving sizes are huge. I didn't particularly care for... The double-patty situation. I didn't know that was the case. Had I known, I would have asked for just one. The burger was so big that I couldn't fit in my ... oh that's what she said. Let's just get that out of the way. I'm disappointed to see the ratings for this place aren't higher. I've never found anything objectionable about Five Guys, at any location ever. Obviously, you rate it for what it is, which is a delicious but unhealthy medium-to-fast food burger joint. Period. If you want healthy, go somewhere else. If you don't want burgers or fries, go somewhere else. If you think that large portions is bad, go somewhere else. If you're looking for either instant food in your hand or tableside service, go somewhere else. Ok, are we all on board for the concept? Everyone else gone? Good. Now to the review. As people have noted, you get a burger with anything you want on it for no extra (besides cheese and bacon). That by itself is worth a star. The patties are nothing like McWendy's King patties. They're not prefrozen and shaped like a coaster, for one. They're cooked right there, so expect about a 7 minute wait. I'll agree that the patties are low in flavors of their own, but that's what the toppings are for. The whole burger has a smaller diameter than you might be used to, so they usually end up spherical once you add toppings, even if you order the "little" one (normal size). Plenty of food. If you order fries, which are also quite good, get the small. That'll be more than enough, unless you regularly eat for three. Don't get the veggie sandwich. Don't get the grilled cheese. Maybe get the hot dog if you're really trying to switch things up. Get the burger with lots of toppings. Get the fries. Get the drink from the machine with all the cool buttons, and you will be happy (but if you put some strange syrup mix in your soda, it'll be no one's fault but your own). read more

The few times I have been here the service has been fine, but I've left being dissapointed by the lack of flavor in the burgers. I went to this place last year and brought a Bacon cheeseburger, and that day I knew this place was amazing and I savored the flavor of the whole meal. From their marvelous burger to the magnificent french fries. Now, this place is the type of place where they treat burgers with care. That's the good thing about them, because they are consistent with its food which is important when you are craving just that. I would say the burgers are about the same quality as if you went to UNOs or TGIF restaurants; except half the price. Please tell me how the expectations aren't tampered then. THe reason there is hype around this chain is because the majority of people who go here are surprised by what they actually can get and the versatility of their options when it comes to their burgers. For $7 you get two patties and any choice of listed toppings, all prepared in an open kitchen/grill area; it's best to overload your burger with toppings to make it a meal because every bite counts nowadays. Flexibility comes at a price and so does location. Being located in the heart of the downtown area the prices are comparable to the other options around there which serve about the same amount. If the prices are too much then Wendy's serves those who wish to eat off the value menu. I've been there I understand. I like Wendy's too, but I don't think they are better than 5 Guys. I've gotten my orders messed up and had to return thingS because it wasn't good. I don't expect the customer service to be great at any fast food chain, and this place isn't an exception; I order my food and go. Pick it up and eat. It doesn't require much more effort than that. I also find that people who write reviews about a place because they can't use the bathroom laughable. Except for those who actually are paying customers who can't use it, most places never let people use bathrooms without buying things. Downtown Crossing has no shortage of places to eat. Almost all of them pretty pricey and I was in search of something quick and cheap. Five Guys opened up right across from the nearly extinct Wendy's which is a challenge if I ever saw one. Five Guys is run like a well oiled machine. Well oiled in peanut oil and loud. They make an average burger but what really stood out to me was their service. There wasn't a line at the register but the place was pretty full. It was one of those days when I'm not sure what I want to eat but I knew I didn't want pizza or Chinese. Wanting to get my junk food fill I ordered a bacon cheese burger with pickles and grilled onions because that's how I roll. All their toppings are free and they have quite a bit to choose from but I never once felt rushed to make a decision and I appreciate that. I also decide on trying their cajun fries. If I plan to eat this meat might as well go the whole way and finish it off with a side of small fries. Note: If you're not that big of an eater you should go for the "little" version of their burger and fries. I get the feeling that "little" in Five Guys sense means a "normal" meal size. I was kind of shocked when I opened up my burger that it was a double. Now it made perfect sense why the burger cost $7 and change. But it was unexpected. There's no verbiage on their menu to indicate that these were double patty burgers. Some warning on what I was getting into would have been nice. While visiting Boston, I've heard I must try the burgers of these Five Guys. We stopped in this location, which is big, open and clean. Bathrooms were also clean and I am pretty sure I recall good hand dryers. We ordered our burgers the way we wanted them dressed, along with fries and a drink. The pop seemed a bit flat or watered down and more sugar than usual. The fries were great, crispy and well cooked with good flavour. The burgers had fresh buns, fresh ingredients and great flavour, the problem we both found was that they were cold. Not even warm enough to melt the cheese. This was disappointing, especially for my husband who really likes his food hot. I am okay with just warm/hot, but even I found these nearly cold. Luke warm at best. Disappointed. I came in thinking it would be, at worst, better than the wendy's across the street and at best, an alternative to one of the big burger joints everyone seems to talk about (In-n-out or shake shack). With these expectations in mind, I walked through the door during peak lunch hour cautiously optimistic. Service is as good as you can expect from a fast food joint. It is loud, it is chaotic, people are running around everywhere. You typically see 3-4 workers making your burger in production line style with one manager yelling out orders to them. (Loud) The people who give you your order yell out orders and orders are picked up by the guests (also, Loud). Seats are hard to find and tables are close together and the line to the (very cool !) soda machines can be pretty slow. Yet, for the most part the line moved quickly which is a plus if you are in a hurry. But, if you want a nice place to just sit and eat your burger, prepare to put up a fight for a table and have to yell over the other table sitting just off your elbow. The place actually has very similar decorations to In-n-out and I feel like it tried to incorporate a lot of the same concepts of In-n-out. Open kitchen, simplified menu, "five guys style", and even similar attire. But that is where the similarities end. The frys I had were soggy. It was also oily enough to make my takeout bag shiny and see through after only a 5 min walk. The burger reminded me of a Burger King whopper; lots of mayo, lettuce and a little too generic. The promise of mushrooms in my burger lasted only until I realized it was impossible to taste it underneath the grease and patties. I ordered a regular burger, fries, and a drink which ran my total to about $10 which is pretty steep considering the quality of food I got. I couldn't finish eating the fries (too soggy, oily, and tasteless) and the burger was kinda tough to get through. If given an opportunity to do it all over again, I might be tempted to just go to the wendy's next door. 2 stars mostly for the novelty of the peanuts and the wide variety of sodas on their touch screen soda dispensers. read more

Five Guys is hands down my favourite burger place. We had dinner here in December 2016, during a short visit to Boston. We had previously had Five Guys in NYC in 2012 - and I remember it being good then. But having had In'n'Out and Harlem Shake since then, I wasn't sure if my memory was going to be rewarded. It was. My Five Guys burger (I got lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, BBQ sauce and mayonnaise with two patties and cheese) was just amazing. Fresh and flavourful. And I love the bun. I was anxiously awaiting this location to open as it is right across the street from my office. Lines were miles long for weeks. Five Guys had the staff to handle it but it always seemed like the wait was a bit longer than at other locations. b. good opened a block down and I couldn't help but compare the two in terms of service. Five Guys was always 10-15 mins slower and b. good makes more gourmet burgers. Now, they have reduced their staff but ironically enough service has improved to about the same as b. good. Hands down, Five Guys has the best french fries of any burger chain in the nation. They are greasy and salty, and some still have the skins on, and sometimes you get a weirdly overcooked mini fry that is delicious....they are beyond compare! The burgers are good too, and I like that there are a lot of vegetable and condiment choices. All the vegetables were very fresh. We actually a couple of bunless burgers, which are essentially burger salads. Delightful! The only downside to ordering the bunless burger was the cashier, who quizzed me on whether or not we were ACTUALLY allergic to gluten or not. (Not. But none of her business regardless. I've been told repeatedly that this is THE place to get a burger...and I must say repeatedly that everyone who has told me that must be plagued with the munchies and a knarly hangover in order to think this. This place only cooks your burger one way: all the way. The patties are thin like Wendy's or any other fast food chain, and the fries I got were mostly tossed in the bag and nice and mushy for me. So mushy in fact, when I dipped them into the ketchup I repeatedly lost my fry. HOWEVER, I will say the fries had a good taste to them...so I look forward to wasting 15 minutes of my life reheating fast food french fries in the oven so that I can actually enjoy what partially cost me $8.50. The place was clean, though the giant barrel of peanuts up for grabs by the general public kind of grossed me out. And absolutely no bonus points for the staff...the lady who took my order was pretty much the rudest lady ever. I usually don't write reviews for chain restaurants, but five guys definitely deserves one. Double patty hamburger with any combination of toppings for no charge is UNHEARD OF. Thought it was kindof pricey at $11 for a hamburger, fries and a drink, but then I had my first bite (HUGE bite) and I immediately became a five guys convert. So juicy, had all the hamburger juice dripping down my hands - not exactly the most attractive place to go with a date, but freaking delicious. The happiest part of the meal? Fast line. Cold hamburger. Good cajun fries but not crispy enough. Lunch time is crazy but I've been here twice and the line moves fast. The soda machine is cool. Easy to find a table because it seems most people order take out. For this amount of calories, for that price, I will walk to Four burgers next time. read more
