Superb. Really excellent tasting food, beautifully presented. Great sauces/drizzle. Allows BYOB. Went for second meal. Still great. The au poivre sauce for the rib eye was perfect. Appetizers identify a great chef: yellow fin ahi could not have been better. Moist tender slices with excellent drizzle. The chicken risotto(yes risotto) was perfect, super drizzle. Five Bays Bistro markets itself ostensibly as an upscale restaurant. They are anything but. The acoustics in the restaurant leave you with the impression that you are in the middle of a heavy metal concert. Further, the culinary skills of the staff are suspect at best, At our first and only time visiting the restaurant, we noticed the taste was bland at best, Further, this author ordered rib eye steak to be cooked to medium rare. When the steak arrived, it was between medium well and well done. When I mentioned this to the waitress, she suggested I try a piece before returning the steak. I tried the steak and confirmed it was done medium well and lacked taste, When steak was brought to me, it was very rare and lacked any sort of taste. I wrote to the restaurant to share our experience, however have not received any response. Save yourself money along with having to eat tasteless food and eat at Wimpy's instead Five Bays. Wimpy's offers great food, service and prices. A real gem! read more

Service was extremely disappointing. Waitress was inattentive and paid very little attention to us. Asked for water twice and finally went up to the bar and got it myself. Bread was not fresh. Muffins were hard as a rock. Nice atmosphere, nice bar but not sure I'd go back again. read more

Earlier this summer, my wife and I were visiting Osterville for the opening of the new library. On our way to the event, we past this interesting bistro and made a mental note to come back and try it. We made out return trip last weekend to celebrate my wife's birthday with very mixed results. The restaurant had a nice feel to it with a bar which seemed quite popular and had seating for 10. We arrived promptly at 6:30 and were seated in the back seating area. We asked if it was possible to sit in the main dining area, as it was half empty, but the hostess said that it was not possible as the empty tables were reserved. I didn't make a big deal but the hostess seemed very put out by the question. Our waitress was the real problem with our dining experience. To say that she was indifferent about the service she provided would be a generous appraisal. After handing us the wine list, she asked if we knew what we wanted to drink. I tried to be nice and explained that I would need a few minutes to review the wine list. She did not return for a good 15 minutes!! Other tables were seated near us and served their drinks before she returned to us. Not good. We ordered a Caesar salad which was non-descript. My wife ordered the spicy shrimp for the main course and I order the salmon. Both dishes were very good and we enjoyed the accompaniments as well. In a way, I feel bad for the chef as the meal was very good but the rest of the experience was extremely disappointing. As the 2nd seating diners arrived, the bar became quite crowded and very noisy. It really highlighted the lack of soundproofing throughout the restaurant. When our waitress asked if we would like desert, we said we would take a look at the menu. The pineapple tiramisu sounded interesting, so we decided to try it. Amazingly, 10 minutes later our waitress returned and presented the bill without ever asking if we decided on desert. As I picked up the check, I mentioned to her that we actually were going to order desert. She asked why we did not say so! I explained we did not have the opportunity as the check was presented instead. I told her that this level of service was unacceptable, whereupon she admitted that she had another couple waiting for our table. She offered to sit us elsewhere (outside on the sidewalk?) if we wanted desert but I declined as our experience had painfully come to an end. Good food, interesting wine list with reasonable price points, bad acoustics, and a horrible service experience. read more

Great meal and lovely service we were on the way to a 4 star night, (maybe 5) till the check came with an over charge for a drink. When I pointed it out the server acknowledged that the price was not as listed but instead of saying I'm sorry and offering to correct it (which alone would have been enough), she informed me that the policy is to add an "upcharge" for neat drinks. The price on the menu includes ice and water or soda but they charge more for plain. Having never experienced this before I was clearly put off that there was no note on the menu and was then told there was no room for the notation (but there is lots of room). We had gladly ordered a meal that came in over $50 each sans tip. I would have gladly ordered the scotch if the price had been listed at $2 or $4 more or the "upcharge" listed. But why nickel dime us by slipping a extra $2 on the check AFTER THE FACT and hoping not to get caught? An extra $2! As we were leaving (already signed the check in silence and coats already on) the server came over to inform us that she had discussed it with the manager and they would void the old bill and reissue one without the over charge. Nice, but way, way, too little too late. The fine taste of the night was lost and I was not about to have us stand around in our over coats waiting for 2 bucks. The whole thing was very embarrassing. I increased the already adequate tip because the server did her best to deal with a cheap and frankly immoral policy which ruined the evening and we went out into the cold dank night, unhappy. read more

We went in February, 2010, on a Saturday night. Perhaps it was an off night or off season, but we thought the food was not good. The sole was of poor texture and tasteless. This restaurant was highly recommended to us, and we were very disappointed. Let's hope there was a temporary chef then. read more

The minute we arrived we were not welcome because we did not have reservations. We were dragged around the tiny empty room until provided with a table and told to leave by 6:30 for the reservations (almost 2 hrs later.) I ordered the salmon which arrived with an embarrassing stench. It was dry and overcooked. My husband ordered the sole franchise which had no flavor. It was all egg batter and no taste; however, the risotto was good. We could not leave fast enough so no dessert. Oh and the wine Blondeau, was tasty; however, waaaaay overpriced. Save your money and go to a place like Wicked, which serves great mealsreasonable prices. read more

We were looking forward to our dinner. Hadn't been here in a couple of years. The food was very disappointing. A nice cut of steak was very fatty and half could not be eaten. The salmon was dry (over cooked) and the broccolini was average. The quality of the food and the poor presentation made us feel terrible for the prices that we paid. read more

Five Bays Bistro is a small casual-fine dining spot in Osterville. Between the four of us we had tuna tataki, and lobster mac n cheese to start. We had a couple halibut entrees with mashed pots, risotto and broccolini. I had the scallops special over risotto with (maybe pancetta or prosciutto). My uncle had a steak - came out cooked medium to order with truffled frites. The scallops were cooked perfectly and risotto al dente. I would like to have know that there was meat in the dish. Also the risotto that came with the halibut was just plain. But the scallops and halibut were cooked perfectly. Our desserts included coconut creme brûlée which was on point! A warm chocolate chip cookie and vanilla ice cream which were also on point and the chocolate bomb. Pretty good but was frozen in the middle- after it sat for a few. If the bread were served warm it would have been super tasty as well. Good spot though overall. read more

Great location, nice atmosphere, horrible food. Tried the lobster Mac and Cheese - it was not edible. It's an appetizer not a main dish so thank God it was small! Barely a sign of any lobster, one measly little piece and no lobster flavor, taste or aroma. The pasta was overdone mushy and the cheese was basically water. Hard to believe a chef could put out a dish like this. My sister ordered the same thing and she described the exact same way. She said Kraft is better than what this chef put out. read more

Not sure why people would give this place less then 5 stars, because we had great service, awesome food, and wonderful cocktails. We also met the owner which is a super nice guy. I totally recommend this place if you're in the area. Its totally worth the stop and hang out. What a great experience! read more

The food is good, the service is great. But the bartender needs some lessons. I ordered a Macallan 12 old fashioned and it was served as follows: in a Belgian beer glass, full of ice cubes, with a ton of muddled cherries and oranges, and drowned in water (or potentially club soda). I sent it back and got the replacement, it was the same but without the fruit. A sad way to treat that whisky. read more

Went on a Sunday night when all entrees offered are 19.00 except the filet. Food was absolutely superb, atmosphere excellent (seat by the window with view of Main St.), and service outstanding. Meals came with well presented salad and variety of breads/corn muffins. Nice background music playing, plenty of heat (snowy evening), relaxed vibes, and comfortable surroundings. Would recommend this establishment without hesitation for intimate dining or fun night out with a group of friends. Sunday night special may end soon for the winter.
