Celebrated a friend's birthday here. The food was exceptional, fresh ingredients, carefully prepared. All good choices: Boston Bibb Salad, Nashville Hot Fried Chicken Sliders, Chicken Marsala, Filet Mignon, Cod. The portions are more than ample. The main dining room is intimate, but I wouldn't want to sit in the back room by the kitchen and bathroom. Maybe request the main dining room when making a reservation. This could have been five-stars, but on a slow night (only four tables dining), our wait person continually disappeared. A long wait to order, sitting with our finished plates for 15 minutes, and a maddening long time to get a check. And when I went to the restroom, I found our server, hanging out in the back, talking on her cell phone.

Salmon with celery root puree, kale, fennel, spiced pumpkin seed gremolata - my friend added fries.

Osterville is fancy and Five Bays Bistro fits right in. Dress in your summer best preppie gear, which I love. You can look really nice if you choose but don't slouch in the summer resort fashion. I like that by the way. I like looking like I care. Lilly Pulitzer not required but welcome. We started our night with the barbecue baby back ribs and the lobster Mac and Cheese. Okay! The ribs were delectable. I didn't know I was going south tonight. I thought I was in Massachusetts! But the lobster Mac and Cheese did not congeal. Perhaps they can work on this for next summer. Our meal was top notch. So flavorful! I had the short rib - hard cider braised short rib, cheddar, polenta, roasted root vegetables, pan jus - to be exact. It was absolutely perfect. Again, I was transported to New Orleans. The chef put some textures and flavors together that made for an outstanding meal. My friend had the salmon with celery root puree, kale, fennel, spiced pumpkin seed gremolata. I mean - what is gremolata? Who knows. Just eat it! Yes, I would go back here. I had an awesome time and felt treated well. The food was also delicious.

The…read morebluefish pate itself was good, but rather on the salty side, so serving it with salt and vinegar chips made it pretty much inedibly salty (this was taken off the bill when the bartender noticed we didn't eat more than one bite each). My first glass of vinho verde wine was served at room temperature (the second was fine), and the side plate I was given was crusted with dried food residue. I also watched an employee behind the bar wipe her nose with her hand and then continue slicing citrus barehanded. The chicken empanadas were good but not particularly special. We also had one of the small pizzas, which was the best thing of the night, crispy and flavorful (with a little char at the edges, which we like). The decor is a little bananas (different shades of green between the walls, the napkins, the barstools, and the banquettes; five kinds of lighting fixtures; lots of sound and lighting items with exposed, hasty-looking wiring). The bathroom door doesn't really close and lock properly. And the restaurant is really loud, even half full. The writing on the menu, about family members and special recipes, tells me that there's pride here and real care about making a good restaurant. However, without the attention to detail (particularly cleanliness and hygiene!), that's kind of moot. Three stars instead of two here because the pizza was good and the staff obviously care about customers.

**Extremely Disappointing Birthday Experience**…read more I have been to emBargo before and have generally enjoyed my experiences here, which is why I chose this restaurant to celebrate my birthday weekend. Unfortunately, this visit was a complete disappointment, especially considering our bill was approximately $225. One of the biggest issues was the lack of attentiveness from our waiter. At one point, I needed a fork to eat my meal. One of my guests was heading to the restroom and specifically told our waiter that I needed a fork. I waited approximately five minutes, giving him more than enough time to bring one over. Instead, he continued having a conversation with another employee while I sat at the table unable to properly eat my meal. Eventually, I had to get up from my own birthday dinner and find a fork myself. Only after I got up did someone attempt to assist me with the utensil. Then, at approximately 9:35 PM, our waiter brought the bill to the table even though no one had asked for the check. I found this especially off-putting because this was clearly a birthday celebration, and we had not indicated that we were finished. We weren't even given the opportunity to order dessert or continue celebrating. The waiter had also mentioned that his shift didn't end until around 11 PM, making me even more confused as to why we were essentially being rushed out more than an hour beforehand. When I paid the approximately $225 bill, I left a $15 tip and wrote a note explaining why. I normally tip more than 20%, particularly when I receive good service, but I did not believe the service that evening justified that amount. What happened afterward was what truly ruined the experience. After seeing the tip and my note, the waiter came back to our table and confronted us about it. He raised his voice and argued that we should not have given him the tip we gave him because he believed he had provided good service. When I attempted to explain the problems we experienced, he put his hand up toward me, said that he didn't want to hear it, and walked away. That was completely inappropriate and unprofessional. A customer should never be confronted or yelled at because an employee disagrees with the amount of a discretionary tip especially after the customer has already explained the service issues. I understand that this waiter was relatively new and had only been working at the restaurant for approximately six weeks. I can absolutely give someone grace for being new. What I cannot excuse is confronting a customer over a tip, refusing to listen to their concerns, and walking away dismissively. What makes this particularly disappointing is that I was a returning customer. I have recommended emBargo to friends, colleagues in banking, investors, and other people in my professional network because of my previous experiences here. Unfortunately, after the way my birthday celebration was handled, I can no longer comfortably recommend this restaurant. I specifically chose emBargo for a special occasion. Instead of leaving with a great birthday memory, I left feeling rushed, disrespected, and extremely disappointed. Based on this experience, I would not recommend emBargo for birthdays or other special celebrations unless management addresses how situations like this are handled.

The cookie was good but very generic, tasted like a cookie I could get anywhere, nothing special. For $4 the size was worth it but not the taste. The breakfast burrito was okay as well. It had steak, cheese, egg, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. For $10 it was pretty hefty but it should be maybe $8. What really lowered the rating was that it wasn't really a coffee shop. They only had plain iced and hot coffee, cold brew, and espresso. No flavors and you had to put the creamer and sugar in yourself. The service was quick though. Very small shop inside with what looked like a lot of options. If I lived here I wouldn't have the desire to go back.
