The food is always excellent, however I planned a family gathering for 20 at the Southfield location and not only was the food still awesome, but the service was great and everything was done with such care. The manager Mr. Leroy was attentive to our every need. I had to make several calls over several months and he was great at communicating and answering all of my questions. My food was actually quite good, but unfortunately, the service left a lot to be desired from beginning to end. We waited over 15 minutes at our table before anyone came to take our drink orders. We had to ask multiple times for basic items like silverware and salt and pepper. Our waitress seemed uninterested and rarely checked on us throughout the meal. Fishbone's use to be a great place to get a good meal. Now days I wouldn't recommend eating there. Detroit and Southfield locations are just terrible. My most recent visit was the one down town. What a joke. Bad service and bad food. Don't even bother to complain because after the bill is paid no one cares. The food was absolutely terrible and my waitress was rude and unhelpful. Unless you're getting a cocktail I wouldn't bother. And btw even the cocktails were just not that great. It appears that different locations make them different. Bloody Mary is made different in Southfield than Detroit! How's that work???? Oh well it doesn't matter because I'm not going back to neither location. I guess I'll be traveling to St Claire Shores ... what a shame we spent a nice chunk of money too. Even the staff didn't look happy. The atmosphere was damper!!! A great spot to get sushi when the kitchen is open and the right staff is in place - its a great music venue and a special part of our detroit visits since 2007 - I love it here but just verify they are still serving sushi if thats what you want in your life. This is my first time visiting Fishbone's, and I can see why it is a classic Detroit institution. Unfortunately, most of it was closed because of COVID. It would have been so fun to be able to sit in the center area with the waterfall coming down. The wait staff were very nice and accommodating, however. We ordered the classic saginaki and they promptly lit it on fire. It was tasty because it's basically melted cheese. I would stick to the soul food on the menu. I tried a sushi roll just to try it, but they should really stick to one type of cuisine. read more

We entered the back entrance of the restaurant as it was connected with The Atheneum Hotel, where we were staying. We go inside and we're literally being ignored. So we walked to the front to meet one of the greeters and received the same behavior as before, so we said something to one of three standing around. Follow that up as we get our table and we waited and had to stop a passing waitress after 15 mins of no one taking care of us. They send someone to us after 10 more minutes with water and bread. We ordered our drinks, appetizer and food, then we was put on ignore for 35 mins with no drinks and appetizers. We had to stop the manager walking by us, and then he personally got our drinks and checked on the waitress that was serving us. After that it was another 20 mins of nothing and we had to stop the same manager to check on our food again. He went and got that personally. They gave us our bill and it showed us there was automatic 18% tip for service and the service was UTTER CRAP. Their manager said there's nothing he can do about it as it was company policy. We paid and stormed out. Ambiance was meh, and DO NOT RECOMMEND!!! Their food was decent, however not worth $225 for two people. read more

The food & service were good. The "automatic 10% service fee" on our bill was not!! How can you force a "tip" on the bill for a party of 2? Luckily, the young man who was our server was deserving of the "additional tip." (We added an additional 20% onto the bill, before we saw that an automatic tip had already been added to our bill). We didn't see our server, so we asked the first server we saw about the "service fee". She told us that the 10% is "a tip" pooled between 4 employees (including the cook), that served us. . I asked why weren't we told about the service fee, before we ordered. She simply responded, "It's printed on the menu." I don't make it a habit of reading an entire menu, I normally look for specifically what I went to eat. From now on, when we dine out, we will look for the "service fee" mentioned on the menu, then decide if we really want to eat at that particular restaurant. I have never had any problems when going for lunch or dinner. Food is always good and prepared correctly from Catfish Atchafalaya to Shrimp PoBoy, Chicken Jambalaya and the Crawfish Ettouffe. The service is always been very attentive no matter how busy a night. This will always be one one my favorite places to eat. Highly recommend going. read more

For my vegan friends, the options are limited. If you are like me and going to this place because you were invited and they don't think you eat anyway, you can prove them wrong. We had a large party, 3 tables with a total of 18. So the slow service was to be expected. However, we weren't asked if we wanted appetizers and we also at the end instead of being given a check per table, we were given one check to figure out the split. The few vegan options were tasty. However, the crux of my problems with Fishbone's lies with the service. It BLOWS like Satchmo on Bourbon Street during Mardi Gras. We stopped in last night for the first time in a couple years for drinks and apps. Our server was excellent. The place hasn't changed and we were not disappointed. Where do I start? We'll for starters, the food was a disappointment, like seriously I've seen more fluff on McDonald's fries and have a decent amount of salt on them at the same time, and get me started on the other items our bread and water were the two best things here with the water tasting like tap water. The alligator tasted like the only seasoning on it was an over abundance of pepper and it was really greasy, all it took was a gentle squeeze and out goes anysort of health benefits from it, also everyone had to send at least one thing back, twice for some of us, and the most agreeges thing that happened here is that they gave us catfish bites and tried to play it off as the alligator, and the place was mediocre at best. For some reason they sat at us at the one of the only seats in the restaurant not showing the football game then after this terrible experience they don't reduce the cost of the food, don't give us the option to split the bill or take anything off of the food we didn't even finish half of. Instead they give us some gumbo that looked straight from a school cafeteria. As a whole this was a 1 star experience which is sad because the last time we went here the food was actually quite good but im not showing sure what happened, but we won't be coming back for a while. read more

A classic downtown Detroit staple. I've had only their Cajun food and sushi and those never disappoint. Plenty of seating for any size group. Location is great too, next to casino and walking distance to Ford Field. We came in a few minutes before the sushi bar closed and the server was nice enough to still take our order after the cutoff. The restaurant itself is big and has a nice relaxing vibe. We ordered the California roll, vegas roll and seafood pasta orleans. The sushi was like your average roll at any mediocre restaurant, nothing special about it, but the pasta was amazing! We shared one, and they split the pasta into two plates for us, and it was still such a big portion. The generous amount of seafood they actually put in there surprised me, and the sauce is amazing. Also, the bread rolls and butter they give you from the start are to die for! Overall, I'd give this place more of a 4.5 stars, but I feel like they should have better sushi for a place called Fishbone's :) Definitely recomend the pasta, though! read more

I was in town visiting friends and came here. I got the fried catfish. It said it was a mild heat so I figured I would be alright. The heat was not the issue but the seasoning or lack there of was. It was fried well just missed flavor. The Caesar salad was good with large shavings of cheese and tasty salad dressing. The Texas Tea was okay. We had to walk through the shopping center to get to it which was interesting since the mall was closed. The interior is dark and darker still in the bar area. Nice ambiance for a date or girls hanging out like we were. Plenty of space for the tables and it looked like there may have been a fountain wall but was not working while we were there. Terrible! I was in town for the Grand Prix and had eaten here before and was happy with my meal. I ordered the muscles as my main course. The muscle meat was overcooked to the point of liquid. It was gross... I told the server that they were very overcooked when she stopped to check in and the only response was "okay, sorry." No offer to take them back. No offer to remove them from the bill and order something else. The were pretty much inedible, but the server definitely did not seem concerned which leads me to believe the restaurant doesn't value quality food and isn't concerned with what they serve customers. With so many options in Greektown, it's better to go somewhere else. $45 dollars for inedible muscles, some fries and one drink. read more

Why do you take reservations if your not going to seat them first? Once I was seated and our orders placed it took 1 hour and 15 minutes to get our food. Asked the waiter for more bread, he said yes, but never received it. The waiter never came back to refill our waters or ask if we wanted additional drinks. Just kept telling us our order was next. My party needed to be out of there by 430p. Received our food at 5pm ate quickly and left at 515p. Needless to say we were late to our event. When I brought this to the managers attention he told me its hard to find good help. I will not return and will not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I wanted to give this place a 3.5. It's not exactly a 4 but it's not a 3 either. For an appetizers, we ordered the cat fish beignets and the calamari. We were choosing between the two so we asked the waitress which is better and she responded "the cat fish beignets are our signature item but the calamari is popularly ordered". I would have to agree with the hype of the catfish. It was perfectly fried and seasoned with a very nice texture. It also came with a house sauce that tasted like a chipotle tartar sauce. I wasn't a fan of the calamari. The calamari was cut too thin so it felt like I was eating fried breading and not fried calamari. The bread was soft on the inside and came with a herb butter that was a nice addition. For our meals, my partner and I shared the Po boy sandwich and the Orleans pasta. I asked for it to be a little spicy, since it was not listed as a spacey plate. The portion sizes were really nice. We barely put a dent in the sand which. The shrimp was nicely fried, however, a little under seasoned. The fries that came with the meal were really good. The orleans pasta was good, however, rather than a spicy flavor it was very peppery. I loved the blend of all of the seafood with the flavor of the pasta. My friend got the Atlantic salmon and was indifferent about the flavor. If I were to come back I would try their spicy catfish meal. It looked amazing. The one thing that I didn't like is that the sides were as expensive as the average meal. read more

Arrived into town just as the semi-final World Cup match was kicking off. Fishbone's was recommended as the closest and best spot to find the game. I wasn't expecting much beyond a tv and a drink. This place far exceeded my expectations. Before saying anything else, I just need to give a huge shoutout to the bartender Shelley. She was slammed with our group of 11 all at once at the bar - everyone ordering drinks, meals, some with special requests. Shelley nailed it! She deserves thanks and a raise. As for the order. I got the chopped salad ($7.50) with lemon vinaigrette on the side, and a margarita ($5 during happy hour starting at 3pm). Again, our girl Shelley delivered. No pre-mix, she made this marg herself and it was great. The salad was also better than I was expecting. Great ratio of lettuce to all of the other fixings (peppers, onion, almond slivers, chickpeas, pita croutons, and best of all, real mozz). Fresh and filling and I ate every single bite. The restaurant was clean, lots of seating, good for watching the game, and an overall pleasant surprise in downtown Detroit. read more

The service has gone straight downhill. Used to be a regular stop when downtown, but it just doesn't justify the prices anymore. We asked hostess a question only to be barked at, saying "just wait up there." The gentleman seating us was complaining about how long it took for me to handle the stairs - Sorry, but I am disabled. This is as fast as I go. Once seated, the waitress had a better attitude, but forgot many things. Our appetizers came out after our main course.... We wanted refills but she was never available.... They were out of Cole slaw, so she just brought the items without anything and said "Sorry." And despite asking 4 times for bread, she finally "remembered " but the kitchen was out and not making any more. I usually tip 20-25%, but they automatically added 15. Fishbone's never lets me down! Now it is nothing to rave about, but the food is always pretty good and I always seem to get a great waiter/waitress. This location and its proximity to Greektown Casino and The Atheneum you are always bound to see someone you know. Also, I love the waterfall/fountain and beautiful atrium. Price is $$-$$$ for two people. Breakfast is the best meal served here, lunch & dinner service took too long for how many tables were open. The food is just right at breakfast & not quite there for lunch and dinner. Service is slow & they seem rushed, never really taking time to interact, except again at breakfast. Room service isn't much better, takes 40-60 min & they charge gratuity as well as a tip. We would tip more if gratuity wasn't already charged.Dessert is the next best meal. Top eats: 1) Breakfast 2) Steak 3) Gumbo Ya-Ya 4) Friday clam chowder 4) Fries 5) potatoes 6) sushi 7) sandwiches 8) Bananas Foster Sundae Next we might try the gumbo (Thursday). I heard great things about this restaurant, this was my first time eating here . I was seated right away the restaurant was not busy and very clean . My waiter came finally introduced himself as Dennis and I told him our drink order then he disappeared for about 10 minutes I then ordered appetizers and that took forever Dennis was know where In sight we needed refills we had none . When we finally got our food that's all the Dennis did was drop it off . We had to ask for our bill and then wait once again for him to come back .
