I could not be happier with my experience at Mink. I came with my son for mother's day and didn't really know what to expect. When I walked in and saw the tiny space I was charmed. There was a 2 top table at the back that we were seated at - we could have sat at the bar also - and it was a great spot. We ordered the tasting menu and WOW, every course was amazing. I'll post pics because the presentation was gorgeous for each item. They have a small cocktail and wine and beer selection, but that was fine. My son got their Shrub Mocktail and I got the Shrub with Sake. Both were delicious and so interesting. I can't pick a favorite item because they were all so good, but the Torched Mackerel and Poached Bosc Pear were tied for #1, followed by the Salmon, Oysters and the crazy good Blood Orange dessert. The shrimp toast was just ok for me, not bad, just not as good as everything else. Additionally the service was outstanding. For a tiny place they did everything right. They explained each course, brought out fresh utensils for every course - YEA! - and made sure we had good pacing. Our server was knowledgeable and friendly and enhanced our meal. For my birthday, my brother gave me a gift card to Mink, so we decided to ring in the new year by finally giving it a try--and let me tell you, it did not disappoint. As others have mentioned, seating is somewhat limited, but that only adds to the excellent service and intimate experience. I wish I remembered the names of our server and the manager because they were incredibly kind, accommodating, and helpful throughout the evening. One example of the thoughtful service: I was torn between two white wines, and since my partner ordered one of them, our server offered to bring a small sample of the other so I could compare and choose what I liked best. We also mentioned that we had never tried caviar before but didn't want to commit to a larger portion. They suggested a "bump" for $5 each, walked us through how to enjoy it properly (on the hand, letting it warm slightly), and made the experience feel fun and approachable. We were seated at the bar, which gave us the opportunity to chat more with the server and manager and watch the team prepare dishes for other tables. It genuinely felt like sitting at the chef's table. We both opted for the tasting menu, which changes from time to time, and we were very happy with the selection. We also added the lobster roll, and our server thoughtfully timed it so we could enjoy it alongside the warmer course. The meal began with two different oysters, one topped with caviar, giving us another chance to enjoy it. Next was the shrimp cocktail, which included wasabi--but not in an overpowering way. The flavor was present yet balanced, allowing everything else to shine. The escargot course was especially creative and delicious, paired with basil oil, pepper jelly, and hints of balsamic. While it might sound unusual, the flavors blended beautifully. I expected the pepper jelly to dominate, but it was surprisingly subtle. Next was the potato pavé served with a scallop. The textures were remarkably similar, and the scallop was cooked perfectly. The lobster roll was very good, though I personally found the bread a bit denser than I prefer--I usually like a more buttery, Texas-toast style--but my partner loved it. The turbot followed, accompanied by a chestnut beurre blanc that was incredibly silky and flavorful. It paired wonderfully with the king trumpet mushrooms, black truffle and the fish. The final tasting course was the petit fours: three small cakes--matcha, red velvet, and ginger molasses. They were slightly dense, but still a nice way to end the meal. We also added the house-made basil ice cream (because the basil oil earlier was so good), and that was an excellent decision. Although my birthday had been a few months earlier, once the staff heard we were using a birthday gift card, they surprised me with vanilla ice cream, sprinkles, and a candle--such a thoughtful and unexpected touch. They also treated us to a small glass of dessert wine. By the end of the night, we knew we had found our new favorite place to celebrate. The overall experience is absolutely worth the price point, and I only wish more places were like Mink. We can't wait to return. read more

Mink is an absolute gem for anyone who appreciates thoughtfully curated tinned fish and creative, flavor-forward small plates. Their selection is both impressive and inviting. We ordered 3 tinned fish selections: the lingfjord cockles, smoked whitefish in oil with garlic and shallot, and then the smoked cod liver. The standout for me is the smoked cod liver--rich, soft, and deeply satisfying. It's one of those bites that lingers in the best possible way and keeps you thinking about it long after the meal. The other 2 were decent but this one is for sure the star. Besides the tinned fish, I was able to try their mussel tartine which was very unique but also incredibly delicious. The lobster roll was good as well, but unfortunately nothing overly unique about it. Compared to the rest, it felt a bit lacking. The oysters ordered were also fresh and the team does a great job pointing out which oyster is what type when you get several. My gosh, I am sooo happy I found this place via Yelp. We showed up on Saturday afternoon for an early dinner and was turned away because we were not aware we had to RSVP. Well after standing in the area for less than 5 minutes and seeing the dishes passing by our faces, we knew we had to come back. So as soon as I got in the car, I made us reservations for a 6pm dinner after running the Detroit International Half Marathon. When we walked in on Sunday evening, we were super giddy and happy to be dining here. The food, ambiance, service, wait staff all get 10+. We dined on the East Coast oysters (choose your own) $46/dozen, lobster roll with homemade potato chips and pickles, Chilean Sea Bass, a banana pudding (see photo) like dessert that was to die for. The whole dining experience felt 'rich' and deserved. I cannot say one disappointing thing about my experience. If I'm ever in Detroit again, I might have to make two visits to Mink. Mink was an incredible dining experience. My husband and I went for our first wedding anniversary to get the tasting menu and it did not disappoint- it actually exceeded every high expectation I had! The ambiance was perfect - small, intimate, nice background and not overbearing music, with top-notch service. I could go on. It was so quaint and reminded me of a small high-end restaurant in NYC. As for the food - every new course surpassed the prior, although my favorite was the trout tartare with coco melon. Every dish had perfectly complimenting flavors without trying to do too much. They somehow even made simple oysters so outstanding with huckleberry jam or truffle honey oil. We added on the lobster roll to split (amazing, but not traditional), and the Brie ice cream with caviar bump for desert....I might go back for that alone. Came back during happy hour - and got to celebrate with oysters and a lobster roll. Everything is just so fresh and I still rave about the mignonette. The lobster roll was divine, highlighting the seafood rather than the Rolle being the majority of the dish. It was buttery and full-bodied without carrying the fishiness. We were in the mood for seafood (visiting from Arizona) and were fortunate to stumble upon Mink. We decided on the Tasting Menu and it was one of the most memorable meals I have had. Each course was fantastic. The star was the trout tartare. The smoked mahi mahi in the radicchio salad was also next level. Each dish had great balance and a lot of creativity. The caviar sundae at the end tasted like salted caramel ice cream. Very unique. My only tweak would have been the lavender crème fresh that accompanied the plum tarte. It doubled down on the bitterness as opposed to enhancing with a sweet flavor. This is a small personal preference of mine and in no way detracts from the amazing meal we had. Mink was the location for a recent birthday night out. The restaurant was a surprise for me, and a new place for us both. While fun to check out, it won't be on our roster to repeat. We were promptly greeted at the door and shown to our seat. The interior is very cozy, and has a minimalistic elegance. There are 3 tables and a number of chairs at the bar, and that's it. We both decided on the tasting menu for the evening, as it seemed to have the best variety. Results are mixed for us. Oysters were fresh and delicious, the terrine was beautiful if a little bland, kale salad hit the spot for both of us, the Coquille St Jacques was not our favorite iteration of the dish, and the Bourride would have done better with a flakier fish. Dessert is where they really missed the mark. When asked about food sensitivities at the beginning, I mentioned that I avoid gluten, although not celiac and I don't need to be as strict as many people are. I was told that it was an easy menu to modify. Aside from the crackers that the terrine was served on, our meals looked identical. Before dessert, the server asked if either of us wanted to add on a scoop of house-made ice cream, and we declined. We both understood this to be in addition to the spice cake that was part of the fixed meal. They brought my husband the spice cake from the prix-fixe meal, and brought me a scoop of ice cream. And that was it. I was stunned. If I had known that I was only getting a scoop of ice cream, there were other flavors I would have chosen. I took one bite of my "Lingonberry" scoop that I wasn't asked if I wanted and I was done. It was way too tart. Conveniently, the server didn't ask if I had enjoyed my dessert as she took away my husband's plate but left my nearly full bowl in the table. This is incredibly long overdue, but I just wanted to start out first by saying that Mink is my favorite restaurant in Detroit. It was so memorable to me and everything here is wonderful. When we visited, we opted for the $85 tasting menu, which comprised of ~5-6 courses, initiating with the duo of oysters. It was delicious and we LOVE oysters so much, that it was basically imperative that we continue on with the dozen oyster add-on ($44). Totally worth it, but spoiler alert.. that may have contributed to us being extra beyond full at the end! The selection of dishes meshed perfectly with each other. The menu was also seafood heavy, so if that's not your thing, then this probably isn't your place. BUT, if it is, don't even think twice - you must get your butt over there! One of the dishes we really loved was the fish and tofu plate, which had varying textures. In addition, the mashed potato toast with the miniature fries on top was like a flavor bomb in your mouth. Can you say carbs^3 in the best way possible? We also had some clams embellished with bread crumb and flavorful meats, as well as another filling fish dish, which was delectable. The one thing that I really want to emphasize though was the service and hospitality. We love you, Stephanie! We had a reservation around 5:30 pm, and although they weren't immediately ready, Stephanie made it a priority to ensure that we were happy, and did whatever she could to show that she cared and noticed us. Seriously, that goes an IMMENSELY long way to me, and I am super observant whenever this happens. The food, the service, the ambiance - just everything was perfect. My friend dined here with her coworkers one and mentioned I would like it, I'd been craving oysters so we decided to go together. When we got there we were greeted immediately and the staff was so friendly! I let my friend take the lead on ordering and we got the tasting menu (changes every 4 weeks), a dozen oysters, caviar bumps, and a tin of squid. The tasting menu was delicious, you can tell there was a lot of intentionality put into these dishes. There were some things I liked more than others, but overall I would order it again. My favorite part of the meal was probably the oysters, we tried every kind available between the dozen and tasting menu, and it was so fun to taste and compare them. Last year, Nate and I gifted each other an oyster shucking class at Mink for Christmas. It was so fun and I learned a lot, and I knew I wanted to eventually go back to try the menu. This year we decided to gift each other a trip to Detroit, so I made reservations at Mink. They were doing a special fete au fish menu with fancy ingredients and delicious sounding dishes. It was $125 per person with optional drink pairings and add ons, which was a bit pricey but worth it to us for the experience. Their regular chef's tasting menu is closer to $80 per person, I think. Definitely make reservations as the space is tiny, I think it probably only seats 15-20 people tops. We were seated at the bar, which was super fun as we got to watch them cook. The food they put out in such a tiny kitchen is really amazing! They only have some induction burners and a tiny convection oven. I felt like we were watching an episode of Top Chef in person. The menu was 5 courses plus a duo of oysters amuse bouche. We also added on an additional one dozen oysters which were so fun to try. The food was all very good, but my absolute favorite dish from the menu was the sea urchin buttered ramen. I'm still thinking about it today, actually. The uni was so buttery and delicious and the addition of the crawfish tails was so fun. The dish was very decadent but lemony and balanced. The lobster salad was also delicious and light. I've heard great things and you know it's good because it's the same owners as Marrow (Ping Ho of the Royce & Sarah Welch - who was a finalist on Top Chef!!). Like think Mabel Gray (before expansion) and cut that in HALF (maybe 1/3?). That said, make rezzies on RESY! My review is a warning. Don't waste your time and money here. Mink is honestly the worst restaurant I've ever been to. I'm a seafood lover and this place was disgusting and a rip off. I got the tasting menu and the portions were so small, I was still hungry when I left. Literally ordered a pizza on my way home after spending 380$ on low quality food. You could go to Trader Joe's and concoct your own mini meal for $15 and it would be better than what they're serving people. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if that's what they're reselling. There is also very little to choose from on the menu. The tasting menu, a tiny lobster roll, tiny low grade oysters, caviar and various tins of fish. They have maybe 4 specialty cocktails and a few wines. They don't offer a full bar. They had one type of vodka and no rum. I asked for 3 lemon wedges with my drink. The waitress brings me 1 lemon wedge cut into 4 tiny pieces that I was supposed to share with someone else at my table. My friend's martini came out in a miniature martini glass that was probably 3oz. Every word out of the waitresses mouth was a sales pitch on how to get us to order more. She was really pushy about us ordering the caviar and lobster roll. It was very clear to me that this restaurant is all about over charging and underserving. This is the sister restaurant for Marrow so I was very excited to try it. Clearly it's seafood themed so the fare was very light compared to the heavier beef based menu over at Marrow. We ordered off the Tasting Menu since it was our first time. It was $85 per person which was very fair. I thought I'd still be hungry after since I have a large stomach/capacity for food and I came hungry. But surprisingly I was so full I couldn't eat another bite! Each dish was curated well and followed each other nicely. If you don't like salty foods this may not be for you. The food leans VERY savory, but that's exactly my cup of tea. Even if you are not, you will still enjoy Mink, because they keep the seafood pure and mostly unadulterated and the flavor is in the accompanying sauces. We also enjoyed the selection of oysters. Lots of variety for a state that is landlocked. Impressive. I was also pleasantly surprised with the homemade ice cream. I don't usually go for the ice cream dessert choice at restaurants, but it was recommended to us and boy was I glad. Don't sleep on this item! Service was defiantly newbie friendly. It was our first time trying any type of caviar and the waiter explained it to us very patiently and gave his recommendations. I didn't know that caviar should only be touched by the mother of Pearl spoon. That was a fun fact. Ambience was cute and intimidate. There is window seating, and bar seating. I counted maybe 12-15 seats total in the entire restaurant. Hipster chic. Parking will probably be your biggest issue. There is private parking next to it but only for 3 cars and I'm assuming that's for the staff. There is street parking out front on the curb for 3 cars that you can see from inside the restaurant. And then a couple more down the street. It is in a sketch part of Detroit so we were lucky to get a spot directly in view of our table. We had an earlier incident, on the same day, of a random young man trying to open the door handle of our BMW. He got spooked when he saw us yelling from across the street. Be careful. The staff here are so delightful and passionate about the incredible work that they do and you can really see that come through in all the inventive dishes they prepare right in front of you! But if you have any questions for them, they are also more than happy to answer them and share more information about what you're eating or their craft! Their restaurant is small and intimate with predominantly bar-only seating and then a handful of small 2-4 person tables at the front and back of the small establishment. My friends and I were seated at the bar and I feel as though this is the preferred way to go because you can watch them preparing your dishes for you! In addition to the chef's tasting menu ($80 for 5 courses, menu changing on a more or less monthly basis), my group of 3 ordered an add-on of a dozen oysters to start our dinner off with. They shucked and prepared 4 different kinds of oysters for us that were then arranged in the order we were to eat them as well. My friends also ordered the beverage pairing of wines and sake, which they seemed to enjoy, and we got some additional dessert at the end of our meal as well. Everything was truly so good and I enjoyed how unique each course and morsel tasted in my mouth! If you are really into fish eggs and oysters, this is the place for you! If you are not, there's still plenty to eat, but we found the food to be kind of strange, with strange combinations. I also found their complete indifference to any kind of decor or color either in the restaurant or even the food presentation to be off putting. I'm not sure if the totally faded decor/ flower arrangement on the bar was intentional but it just looked like it had been sitting there for years and needs refreshing. I am long overdue in reviewing Mink. I visit somewhat regularly as I'm in the neighborhood and enjoy their revolving innovative menu of seasonal ingredients. This review is specific to visit to enjoy their current late April/ early May tasting menu. Although my experience is on par with previous visits. First and foremost, the space is cozy with the most attentive, kind and down to earth staff. They are super knowledgeable on the food and wine/sake options. Which is remarkable given how often everything changes. Chef Cameron is often interacting with guests sitting at the bar and makes you feel right at home. The oysters are always super fresh and they have a variety to suit any of your preferences. If you don't know what you like, leave it to the chef. It is a great place to explore variety and complexity of flavors when it comes to oysters. The tasting menu always feels inspired by the seasons, a travel experience or region. This particular menu had some Spain vibes with the Soccarat De Paella and Torriga for dessert. Add in seafood stuffed morels and the entree of sablefish with crispy skin served with fiddlehead ferns and the most delicious Romesco sauce...you're in for a treat! They have a fixed price menu, oysters, tinned seafood, and caviar. The restaurant only has 3 tables plus a counter that would seat 5 couples. Wine list is very small, but great. Note that the price of the food is high to very high. Be prepared to throw down some $$$ if you want to do things right. The tasting menu food was really good, and I would highly recommend that. We ordered a dozen extra oysters, and my BF said they were the best he's had in Detroit. Of the oysters, our favorites were: 1) Baywater Sweet, 2) Love Shuck, and 3) Raspberry Point and Sand Dune (tie). The service was very attentive and knowledgeable. Oh... My... Gosh... I was staying a couple of blocks away and wandered into Mink for a bite. The menus is pretty fun and the space has a great vibe. All I can say is that the lobster roll is the best I have ever had - and not by a little bit: by a long way. In fact it may have ruined me for other ones for life. The home made bread, the dressing, it was utterly perfect. I also had the pea cake with rhubarb and cream cheese foam which was also fabulous. Michael, Darren, and the whole crew make you feel like a local and genuinely seem to love working there. Mink feels like one of those little New York gems that you would wait months to get into. It nails being a welcoming spot with great people and equally great food. Happily I got to tell the owner and her designer that as they were sitting next to me at the bar. Tried the tasting menu at Mink with friends and we absolutely loved it! Each course was better than the next and had fresh, rich flavors full of surprises.
