The Royce offers free wine tastings on Wednesday from 6-730pm. They pours during the tasting are a true "taste" lol don't expect full pours like you get at Cooper's hawk. However, the tastings are in small groups of about 8 people at a time so you can hear the wine descriptions and interact with the group easily. I ran into a college classmate that I haven't seen in 8 years because we were both running our mouths about how we liked the wine we were tasting. I wasn't a fan of the wines we tasted but I loved the Chardonnay I purchased as we sat around and talked. Conner was a great server and gave excellent recommendations. I've been coming to the Royce for several years now. My original reviews still holds true. The lower level is an open and relaxed space, with shelves of wine lining the wall. The staff is wonderful and knowledgeable, they are always bringing in and offering new wines to try. Over the last few years they have been offering "wine school" classes. They vary from Rose wine class to focused on a specific region, recently we attended the class on Georgian wines. They do offer a few cocktails, including non alcoholic options. read more

The Royce is a wine bar with an absolutely fantastic vibe. Their menu is easy to understand as it goes from top to bottom light to heavier. Im a tannin based wine drinker so the deeper and richer the better. This spot also has light bites, great decor and plays Disco. The kind and welcoming Joe from NYC was fun and taught us the menu effortlessly as we are always doing 'research' with our wines. We stopped in here before our reservation at another nearby restaurant. I absolutely loved the vibe of The Royce. I loved the tile work behind the bar, the shelving full of wine. I didn't go upstairs, but I loved that there was an upstairs/loft option for seating. I had the aged Gouda, and it was delicious. That's probably my favorite cheese. We also got the bread and oil and the oil was super good, although I would've liked it on a plate for easier dipping. The wine was good as well. This place is an absolute dream. I was in Detroit visiting for a wedding and someone recommended I stop in here for a glass of wine and some yummy snacks. I had so much fun sitting at the bar and conversing with the staff. While I enjoy wine, I don't have a large knowledge of what wine options are out there. The staff made great recommendations and help teach me a little bit about wine. I even had an opportunity to try an orange wine which had been on my list. As someone who does not eat pork, charcuterie is usually not an option. So, I was pleased to see that they offered smoked duck as an option. It was delicious! We decided to try The Royce tonight for their Lions game thingy. Our waiter said it's never really taken off and I can tell you why-- they're not even remotely trying. 2 TVs does not make a venue for sports. Their YouTube WiFi feed was in and out from the start, the service upstairs was inconsistent, and the atmosphere was far from "game day." If you want to host great Lions events, you have to actually make yourself an appealing destination. By halftime, half the patrons had given up and we ran into some of them at La Lanterna which was actually fun for the game despite being, predominantly, a restaurant. read more

The team really tries to get to know you and understand what you like/don't like when making their recommendations. If you're new to wine, that's okay too! They make things super approachable and provide several opportunities for you to learn whether it be their wednesday free tastings, wine club or expos. Definitely a very relaxed unpretentious atmosphere for both new and "more seasoned" wine lovers. Came here for a private party. They have a perfect upstairs area to host an event overlooking their main level. I'm so glad they're able to open inside now that the Fall chill is upon us. We started on the patio last night, but moved indoors once the wind picked up. Lots of space; warm and inviting. It looks like a library for wine inside. The food, service and sangria were all excellent; we had a charcuterie board and olives and everything tasted so good. It gets a bit pricey, though, beware. We had 2 meats, 2 cheeses and olives, 2 sangrias and the bill with tip was $73. I think I'll shop for wine to take home next time - they have a ton of interesting varieties! read more

What a perfect place. A friend suggested this place to us a month ago and we found some time to stop in. They have a great tasting menu - for sober October I stuck with the nonalcoholic menu, which featured Rishi teas, CBD seltzers and spicy margaritas, and others. I loved the Rishi tea seltzers - my friend and I tried all three flavors. We ordered the bread and oil, sopressata and truffle brie. The brie was heavenly, the others were also very fresh and tasty. This is such an underrated spot in downtown Detroit! It's beautiful interiors sets the perfect mood for a cozy and mature evening. This is a great spot to catch up with friends or have a romantic date night. The wine was sourced from all over and priced moderately. My friends and I noticed that they offered Orange wine and couldn't pass the opportunity up to have it. The waiter was friendly, informed, and made the experience perfect. My friends and I closed this place down and could've spent even more time chatting and sipping our delicious wine. This is the best hidden gem right downtown. They are a perfect chill place to try some interesting new wines paired with some delicious charcuterie. I loved my limoncello spritz and the other members of my party were all very pleased with their drinks, which ranged from a nonalcoholic spritz made with Seedlip Blood Orange, a sparkling rose, some full-bodied reds, and an orange wine. This was a great spot for us to stumble on - the staff was super friendly and accommodating and we were thrilled to find a last minute table for 6 on mother's day. They were also super knowledgeable about each wine they had on the menu and made excellent recommendations. The charcuterie board was a bit on the smaller side but everything we chose was delicious, particularly the truffle brie. They also have a small selection of local chocolates and jam from Beaubien Fine Foods that we picked up on the way out. I'm hoping they are around for many more wine tastings to come! read more

Been dying to come back in after coming here for an event. I love the atmosphere. It's welcoming, stylish yet laid back and comfortable with a romantic touch. The upstairs is my favorite area. The menu is small and I do think that the wine pricing is on the higher end. A lot of places you can get a nice glass of wine between $7-$10. Here they pretty much start at $12 & up. And unfortunately they serve their wine in stemless glasses. I get it's a fad and maybe some people like it but it's a huge pet peeve of mine. Especially with white wine! You want it to stay chilled yet there is no stem so you're constantly warming your wine the whole time. And they don't offer ice with your water, seems like another trend these days, so you just have to ask for it. In the summertime, warm water is definitely not this quenching. They have a small variety of food offerings. Mostly Charcuterie items you can piece together to create your own Charcuterie platter. The pricing is on the higher side. We tried the Triple Cream (richer and saltier then your classic Brie) it was ok. Along with the Olives and Sourdough. Since I'm Gluten free I just ate the Cheese and Olives which also was served with crackers as well. The cheese was a very small serving for the pricing. All in all the atmosphere is nice and the staff was friendly but you won't leave here with a cheap bill. read more

This was actually a place I had been wanting to try. I ended up there on a whim. So this place known for wine and you buy bottles. They have a whole wall of bottles. So walking in it's very cute spot. There definitely isn't a lot of bar space, but there are tables around. I first order there moscato because it's a sweet wine and not big on dry wines. I'm not some big wine know it all, but I know wines can vary in sweetness. I get moscato is know to be sweet, but it was too sweet for me. I ended up telling the waiter it was too sweet for me. He then said well it's a moscato. I know what I ordered lol. So I asked if I could get a French 75 like my friend. He eventually made it and apologized. So overall was an ok experience. I'm someone who doesn't like to complain or send things back, but this place is a little more expensive and I wasn't enjoying my wine. So I had to say something. The French 75 was great! read more

Stopped by The Royce after having dinner at Republic. I think the glass pricing is meant to encourage you to just buy a bottle of wine and pay the $10 enjoy-here corkage fee. Price per glass is way more affordable that way. For instance, my glass of Pétillant Naturel Rose (Domaine Robert Serol Turbullent Sparkling Rose, Loire, France) was $15. I picked out a bottle of wine to-go and it was the same price. A standard bottle of wine has 6 glasses so even if the table paid $25 (which includes the $10 corkage fee), the price per glass is still only about ~$4. It's a wine-focused bar, but they also have some specialty cocktails. Second visit yesterday and was still so pleased with my service. I ended up here for after dinner drinks a few months ago and was pleasantly surprised even though they only had wine cocktails. My new favorite spot in Detroit! This place has all you're looking for in a wine bar. Casual but cool atmosphere, great wine selection, a bomb meat and cheese place, and knowledgeable servers. We stopped by on a Wednesday for the free wine tasting 5:30-7pm. They featured a few white wines and discussed each one in detail with you. We ended up ordering glasses of the tempranillo wine that was on special for about $5 a glass and selected an assortment of meats and cheeses. The place is filled with bottles of wines shelved up to the ceiling with ladders. If you're a Disney fan, it reminded me of Belle in the Beast's library, only with wine... COOL! I'd recommend this place for happy hour or pre/post dinner drinks and snacks. I have a feeling my next visit will be in the very near future. read more

in love with the vibe of The Royce. its right next to the Rusted Crow so after having dinner there one night with friends, we popped in to have a glass or two. It's gorgeous inside. Open space, warm lighting, a floor to ceiling wall of wine bottles that I now want in my house, and great music playing through the speakers. It wasn't overly crowded but a good amount of people standing around the bar. The upstairs look cool too with lounge chairs and tables but there was a big group occupying that area so we didn't stay up there. I do wish that there were more tables. there was one big hightop closer to the bar but was taken and then two little table far away from everyone and anything. we sat at one of those tables because it was our only option and we didn't wanna stand I didn't enjoy being so far away from everyone. We started with just one glass of rose each. I won't its the most expensive wine list I've ever seen but definitely not the cheapest. After getting our glass we saw a sign the said you can buy any bottle they sell and drink it there with a $10 cork fee. It would have been cheaper for the 3 of us to do that so we were bummed but decided to do that for our next round. I really can't wait to come back on a night where I can speak with someone on all the different wines they have and buy a bottle. The Royce is about as close to heaven as I'll probably ever get. They have an amazingly well-curated wine selection, delicious snacks, and a knowledgable and charismatic staff that made our time there (i.e. every single night we stayed in Detroit) so enjoyable. I was particularly impressed with their great selection of natural wines and vermouth - lots of niche finds that were new to me.
