Took a macaron baking class here, the instructors were great and super helpful. We made cranberry and peppermint macarons. The peppermint came out great, the cranberry ones came out okay. Texture and appearance wise they were practically perfect, but they def did not taste like cranberries, they tasted more like plain/vanilla. Not necessarily a bad thing bc hey still tasted good, just not what we were expecting. Would take another cooking class here. read more

Ordered an Olive wood serving board on line. Packaging (or lack thereof) was terrible. The board had a prominent nick on the edge and scratch, or crack, on the surface. Poor quality control. Coloring was not as depicted on line and did not have the wood-grain character one expects from quality olive wood. The only positive was the quick (inconvenient) return and refund at a physical store. I didn't bother looking at other items there and suggest you don't either. read more

The store itself was great, we were here for Black Friday shopping. Many staff members came to help us, but were very competitive over who would get commission for sales. Honestly seemed very negative to me. One associate started arguing with another trying to claim that they helped us. I wish the sales associates would be nicer to each other. Did an Italian steakhouse cooking class as a date night! It was just the right amount of instruction so you could cook it on your own but they do a lot of the work for you. All the clean up is on them too which was nice. They provide all of the ingredients and assigned spots to cook at. We had a nice time learning how to make the meal. The steak we grilled in our spot and then they cooked it in the oven for us. We made a pana cotta dessert, made gnocchi from scratch and sautéed spinach! I would do another class here for sure however it is a bit pricey for what it is. $85 per person. My husband remarked that we could have just gone out for a steak dinner instead of making our own. read more

I attended the cooking class for a private event held by one of my company's service providers. The class was informative and I learned some new things The chosen menu was impressive and delicious (steak au poivre with Dijon Brandy sauce, grilled fingerling potatoes with shallot bacon vinaigrette, and lavender honey ice cream) Bonuses: The cooking smells were mostly* fantastic Most ingredients were measured and ready to go to expedite the process. They clean everything up after you (no scrubbing pans!) It was free for me (thanks unnamed business service provider!) *We were given olive oil for grilling over high heat. Since olive oil has a low smoke point, it burned and filled the place with smoke. I could still smell burning olive oil hours later I'm glad I got the opportunity to give the classes here a try because I have been looking for a cooking class to improve my skills and learn new techniques. Definitely a fun store. I'm the cook in my family, so I love all the little tools at this store to make my meals even better. I've taken 3 classes at this location now and loved every one of them. The classes do tend to push their products on you but they are a kitchen tool store, so it's understandable. Every chef I've had as a teacher has done a great job, very polite and helpful. The recipes are great as well-new things I never would have made in my own. I've done the Ina Garten:Cooking for Jeffery, Springtime in Paris, and Down by the Shore. Down by the Shore was definitely my favorite-crab cakes, lobster rolls, cole slaw, and star berry shortcake. Simply delicious. They do offer great deals on the day of the class. 10% off when shopping, discounts on future classes, and other daily deals. We waited patiently by the machine while one employee brew a coffee by us while being on the phone and other two employees were across the table looking at other machines and talking to each other. I signed up for a cooking class for date night, and enrolled in a seafood class. The instructor was great, she was easy to understand and clearly had very strong culinary skills. She kept roasting my date which was also very entertaining. Typically for the class, your put in a group of four (two couples usually) to prepare the meals. Everyone takes turn prepping the ingredients. There are a lot of helpers that make sure you have the tools and ingredients you need. The instructions were easy to follow. The food was tasty, we made shrimp, steak tuna and a fish salad. So we were very full by the end of it. Some of the simple parts like heating are done by the helpers. The class was 2 hours long and cost about $85/person. Obviously, they advertised and asked you to use their products but it was interesting to learn about all the new equipment. I took a cooking class here and it was just ok. I wish I would have known before purchasing the class that you cook in teams of 4 and if you plan on cooking with someone to purchase your spots together or else you'll be placed on random teams. On top of that I expected I would be cooking everything myself. In fact we only truly cooked one item and the instructor did the rest. Mix that in with the team cooking, you really don't get much chance to cook or learn on your own. Everyone in your group also shares and handles the food. Given the current climate were in and the thought of other peoples bare hands touching all the food and cooking utensils, was a little unsettling. Even though though they ask you to wash your hands throughout the experience or if you touch your face or phone, people don't always abide by that rule. (I watched many do this and not wash their hands). With large group setting like this, everyone was very crowded in a tiny space. Which also made it hard to truly see everything the instructor was demoing. I think it's truly more of an experience than it was a class. The food itself was good though. And the instructors were nice and clearly very knowledgeable. The only way to truly get something out of it is to ask questions on the side. If you're truly interested in learning how to cook, I would look into taking more of a professional class or trying the online class so you get a more hands on 1:1 experience. read more

Don't let the French name of this store sway you from entering because you assume it's too pricey for your budget. Reality: It's not, if you shop their sale items, and mid summer is a great time to do it. I don't shop at malls very often back in DC because parking is always a bear, or it's not free. Anyways, I usually browse, but today I bought! I had to restrain myself. I have a very small kitchen after all. They had pretty summer melamine plates and bowls at 50% off. Perfect for patio entertaining. I also bought quality decorative dishtowels that were marked down AND buy one/get one free! They were less then $2.00 each and make a great hostess gift wrapped around a bottle of wine. This location has a separate entrance to their cooking class area, which you can also access through the store. I am going to have to check out their schedule for the next time I am in town. I wouldn't call myself a "chef", I'm far from that level of precision in cooking; I'd call myself more of a food/cooking enthusiast. Food inspires me and I'm constantly trying to improve the way I prepare it. So the class at Sur La Table was right up my alley. It was affordable $68 a person & hands on. That was key for me. I can watch people cook all day long but I learn so much more when I get a chance to go through the motions myself. The Chef/Instructor was very nice and informative. The only thing I felt the class was lacking was a bit more explanation as to technique. There wasn't much along the lines of the why's and how's. For instance, the instructor asked who wanted to chop the apple for the apple tart dessert. A few people volunteered and then it wasn't until after they were done chopping that she explained that the slices were to be evenly chopped and in a shape that is aesthetically pleasing since they will be visible through the caramel. So there were some missed opportunities on her part to elaborate on where then ingredients would be going and why we needed to add them in particular ways. Overall the class was really helpful and it was a lot of fun learning hands-on too. I'd definitely come back for more classes. I got a nice meal out of it, lessons and recipes. All for a mere $68 bucks! That's affordable for cooking classes. read more

We came to Sur la Table yesterday, Sunday, 10/07/18 at 4:00 PM for a cooking class. The class was a lot of fun and we learned some great ways to prepare food. We made panko-crusted pork chops, braised cabbage and herb spaetzle. The pork, although it was a tiny portion, and cabbage had great flavor, but the spaetzle was nothing special. Our chef was great-very personable and energetic. We prepared, seasoned and cooked everything, which included the spaetzle, cabbage and pork chop. The class was a little awkward in the beginning because there were couples and singles who needed to figure out which group they were going to be a part of. We had a nice lady that was on our cooking team and we made sure to include her in everything and make her feel comfortable. Thank God she was so cool, because if she hadn't been like that then the entire session would have been un-enjoyable. We cooked the pork chops at the end of class, which meant that we dredged them, browned them in olive oil in a pan over high heat and then the chefs finished them in their oven. My wife's pork chop was a little under-cooked. There was too much pink in it, but we were at the end of class and we didn't want to make a scene about it, so I ate it instead. I know that some people believe that good pork can be cooked to a medium or medium rare, but that's not how we like to eat pork. Our chef said that pork should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees, but he should have explained that that would be considered medium rare. In hindsight, it would have been nice for him to ask us how we wanted our meat cooked. The cabbage was wonderful-it had a little acid from the apple cider vinegar, a little sweet from the apples and some savory from the bacon. We were there for a long time-THREE HOURS! A three-hour cooking class should have enabled us to prepare and consume a three-course meal, but we probably only had an entree with two sides because so much of the class was spent listening to sales pitches on the pots, pans and utensils we were using to cook our food. The store was huge and all of the workers were super knowledgeable and helpful. There were a ton of great things to buy. They had a huge selection of specialty knives on the back wall that were behind a glass display. They also had several dozen pots and pans to choose from. One of the pans was as much as $300-too expensive for my tastes. They served us the best coffee beverages (cappuccino and macchiato) we have ever had during our cooking class and they were made from a $3,000 espresso machine. I don't think we'll be back because of how expensive the class cost-$46 a person, but it was a fun experience. read more

Located in the upper crust mall, in the half south of Big Beaver. I have shopped there several times, and have just taken the pasta making class. Mostly upper end cooking and baking supplies. 90% of the staff is helpful and polite, the other 10% are pretty jerky. Some of the shelves are crowded and jumbled, and there are sale areas right next to special shelves that are displays but not on sale, to confuse the shopper. I attended the class. The ingredients were pre measured and set out. The instructor was friendly and detailed. There was a helper to clean up. We made two types of pasta and two sauces. Then we ate our efforts. I learned quite a bit. The only downside was that the instructor used a mic system and she ended most declarative sentences with a questioning lilt, which made it hard to make out the final word. read more

My husband bought me a class as a birthday present before the store even opened, and I was super excited because I've never taken a cooking class before. I showed up eager to learn just before the 11am classtime....and learned that the class had been moved to 3pm. Apparently the time had been changed sometime after my husband bought the class but before the store opened, so the teacher was never aware of the 11am time and didn't call me. I really think that someone from the corporate office or store management would at least send out a confirmation email or something before the class! So that kind of started things off on the wrong foot. When I came back at 3pm for the CORRECT class time, I was pretty crabby and felt like they better be pretty freakin awesome in order to win me over (and that they should do something to make it up to me). Well, fortunately for all of us, they blew my doors off! The class (Essential Knife Skills) was really informative and fun and the 3 hours really flew by. While we were practicing chopping vegetables, the instructor's assistant was using our food to make a delicious soup that we got to eat after class. We also got to drink gourmet coffee to our heart's content throughout the class and test out some incredibly expensive knives - so sharp that I think I cut my finger just staring at the paring knife! I had a blast, and the instructor said I should come back and take another class from her in the future for free, to make up for the inconvenience of the classtime mixup. Hurray! The store itself is absolutely amazing. I was expecting it to be jaw-droppingly expensive and fancy, but alongside the bajillion dollar mixers and coffee machines, they also had very affordable fun gadgets of all kinds. There were so many cute things and clever ideas that I could have easily filled 3 shopping carts, but wound up narrowing it down to a few spatulas (shaped like guitars and hearts, no less) and some very cool cookie cutters in shapes I hadn't seen before. The prices were more than reasonable, plus I got a 10% discount for having taken the class! Deducted one star for the lack of organization concerning the class time, but other than that I loved the place. That's really saying a lot considering that I was about ready to punch someone out at the beginning of my class! They had a major mood deficit to overcome and they managed to make me really happy. read more

I attended a class here last week on a Wednesday night at 6:30pm. They kindly had snacks out for those of us who had come directly from work and several beverages to try. The class started promptly, and the instructor was great about making sure everyone could see. The setup in the kitchen was convenient, with a video camera and a screen so you could watch it. The instructor also had everyone come up and take turns at the cook top working on the foods. The class was very informative and they give a little break while the assistant does dishes & the foods cook, so you can browse the store. I really enjoyed this class and will probably take more here. The prices aren't bad, they are actually cheap for hands-on cooking classes! read more

My husband and I got a gift card and we took a cooking class last night. So unbelievably disappointed. We paid 80/person and we had to share a cooking station with another couple, barely got to do anything during the class. The menu was French romantic dinner, and clearly the menu is too extensive and shouldn't be offered with not enough time. It was a full class, and to have only one chef I think was incredibly poor planning. I thought that my husband and I would have gotten to make the recipe ourselves, but the chef did 80% of the cooking, and you couldn't even see what was going on when she was doing stuff, we had to fight to see over people. They had slices of ham and small slices of cheese, but didn't offer any substantial snacks. I also felt like the chef was very rude, and probably shouldn't be teaching anyone anything. I wouldn't come back here if someone gave me free lessons. These are not cooking classes, it's a 2.5 waste of time and money. We used our date night for this, I would have rather stayed st home and watched a YouTube cooking class. read more

We initially were very excited to take a cooking class here. Maybe that was the problem, our expectations were too high. I'm only giving it a 2 star because it was something different and fun to do. I really disliked how after each group cooked their ingredients, everyone's ingredients from the class were mixed together. I would rather eat what I'm cooking not some stranger. Also, for $80/person I was hoping that I could have the steak cooked the way I like to eat it. My husband and I didn't even eat the steak because it was too raw for our taste. We came here for a doubled date cooking class, themed A night in Italy. The head chef was really great and the food was delicious. They take you through an entire meal with a class, where you spend time cooking and learning unique techniques and flavors of Italy. Be sure to come into it expecting small portions (like 2 oz. for the chicken). Think of it as a tasting rather than an actual full meal and you'll be just fine. The whole event is about 2.5 hours. I only wish we could have enjoyed wine through the night but it's not allowed :/ id recommend it for group events and friends/couples looking to do something different. read more

Today was my first time doing a class at Sur La Table. Me and 6 of my other cousins decided to sign up together to bake chocolate chip cookies. We were all looking forward to an energetic and fun experience. However, when we got there, it was the complete opposite of that. Our instructor was far from friendly and didn't go into much detail when explaining baking steps. First, we aren't too familiar with kitchen utensils. My cousin was having trouble with a mixer and the instructor told her to "step away" in a very rude tone. Next, while the cookies were baking, she reminded us that we have 8 minutes and she needs to get us out of here. In no way is it our fault that the class was running late. Lastly, my family and I are very close and sharing is never a problem. My cousin decided to rip a cookie in half and put the other half back on our plate to finish later. Our instructor scolded us for having bad hygiene. We tried to assure her that we are all family but she continued to tell us "we don't do that here at Sur La Table". Not only was my family appalled by that comment-- so was the rest of the class. Overall, if it wasn't for the yummy cookies or the friendly group we had I would definitely not be coming back. Took an italian themed "date night" cooking class for $79 a person - what a rip. Way too many "students" in the class and everyone was doing their own thing. The instructor had no control and seemed very frazzled. My fiance and I barely cooked anything ourselves. Every couple had to share all the ingredients and utensils with another couple. After the class ran an hour over - we finally got to eat. The instructor failed to tell the first few students that we cooked one meal per couple, so the first two couples plated their food and took too much, leaving the rest of us to split whatever was left. We never got to make the dessert because we ran out of time. We left the class hungry and extremely disappointed. Will never take a class here again, and suggest you do not either! For $79 a person and half a meal, save your time and money. read more

It's a fine store, but I've stopped going in and have gone back to using Williams Sonoma because there is a saleswoman at this Sur La Table location (dark hair, bit of an accent) who is so insanely pushy, that's it's unpleasant to shop there. The other thing she will do is ask you what you're planning on doing, and if she doesn't agree with your purchase decision, she will almost not allow you to buy what you want. How is that possible? I would, however, like to add that Lauren, our class "chef" (if you could call her that!) was a highly unpleasant person. She didn't seem to want to listen to questions but rather just rush people through the class wearing a fake smile that frankly, made me uncomfortable. For what they charged for this class, the last thing I needed was to witness someone who's inner sadness permeated so strongly as to sour my experience of the class. By the end, all I could think about was her life story and what could have happened to this person to make her so false and devoid of proper emotional development. Yikes... My daughter and I attended the Learn how to make pasta this past Thursday with Jill, and yes, with the hands on teaching, the explanations as to how and why, and with the knowledgeable assistant Elizabeth making sure we were doing it correctly, my daughter and I both feel confident making pasta for tonight's dinner. The family style dinner after instruction was wonderful. Class size, set up, course instruction is well organized. Somewhat disappointed in the cooking class my boyfriend and I attended. The instructor was great, and seemingly very knowledgeable. However, I felt as though $80 a person and 2 hours would have warranted more "cooking" on our part. We walked into the class, and the appetizer had already been prepared in its entirety for us. Granted it was very good, but we as students did not have to opportunity to do any of the prep work or assembly for the dish. This was also the case for the side dish, which was green beans and a vinaigrette. We made the dressing, but we did not get to see the process of blanching the green beans. Lastly, the class I signed up for was deemed a "Date Night" class, which led me to believe that it would be my boyfriend and I romantically working through these dishes - not the case. Each cooking station had 2 couples to it, and shared what few tasks there were between 4 people. I don't mind the occasional fast friend, but it would have been nice to know in advance that it was more of a group project. read more

This place is such a joke, in particular the Somerset location. They charge $70+ for a class and usually rush you, portion everything like it's coming out of their paychecks and are rude. The chefs act like they are Wolf Gang Puck or something. I have been to several classes here and they are just organized so poorly for the price you pay, (ie a group reservation for 4 people are split in to two tables on opposite sides of the room with strangers instead of sitting together). They make you mix things with strangers (like a sushi class where a table of 4 strangers soaks their hands in the same bowl?! Disgusting!). Their main concern is pushing the sale of their tools in the store. Today was an exceptionally unpleasant experience since we didn't even get to take the class! My husband got us this class for christmas for us to make croissants before our trip to Europe. Our kids are older but not 18 and they manager/chef Shelley wouldn't let us take the class saying that "the other people in the class would be upset that there were children there". Well you know what? my kids have taken your "kids classes" and they are horrible! They basically are $100 and let the kids put sprinkles on a frosted cake. Not to mention they only have kids classes during spring break or summer time. My kids are very mature and would not have caused any problems. They have taken several advanced cooking classes with adults prior to this Sur La Table class. I guess you guys must be doing pretty well since you don't want our $280! Not that I thought your classes were very great before but now I definitely will not be returning there again! Also thinking about canceling the group class we have scheduled for our company there. Do yourself a favor and look into other local classes that are less expensive, more inclusive, cleanly, and the instructors treat you better! read more

That location, give them a thumbs up, were very quick to send them. One arrived broken, but a call to the store, and they are sending me another. We went to a Tour of France cooking class with Chef Steve. The class was ok and for those who don't cook at all I am sure they learn a little something. However I found the class just ok and really didn't "learn" anything. Our instructor was nice but not very energetic or informative. He seem frustrated with the lack of preparations (everything should have been set out and measured and it wasn't). I had to ask how to prepare mussels for cooking (de-bearding ... all the mussels were cleaned and set to cook when we got them - it would have been a good idea to learn how to get them ready). Grilling the steaks seemed like a fail for everyone and all the steaks had to be finished in an oven (I wish we could have learned how to check for the different types of doneness). Sur La Table Cooking Classes motto is "Learn, Eat, Laugh" ~ we learned very little but cooked everything, we ate and I don't remember anyone (16 total) laughing. read more

I went to the Flavors of France cooking class for a date night and the experience was awful. We arrived about 10-15minutes early, BYOB in hand, but we had to wait outside the store as preparation was still ongoing... in fact, we were not able to get in until a little after the start time. Then, we were told that we cannot have our own drinks (had brought some wine). Apparently only some stores allow this, but it was not made clear at all. You are then assigned a table with 2 other people. I'm all about being social and making friends; however, you have to share all the ingredients and tasks with this other couple. Meaning, you essentially stand there and do NOTHING the whole date. Every now and then you get to pour something in a bowl, WOO, how exciting, not. There was literally no space to move around and you had to cook your meal along with this other couple when you wanted to be sharing the experience with the person you came with. So, you didn't get to cook things to your liking and there was not enough food to go around. Not to mention, everything was extremely cold when it came time to eat. The dessert turned out absolutely awful and I couldn't wait to get home to actually eat something enjoyable. The atmosphere was sort of dead, not very lively. I just think it's silly to cram everyone in a tiny space for $140 and then you are not even able to enjoy the date with the person you came with, but rather you're helping some random couple pour things in a bowl and you are forced to cook things to their liking versus your own. I will NEVER attend another cooking class here. way overpriced. Food was nothing spectacular at all. I didn't really learn anything useful that I'll use in my own home, but maybe that's just because I'm super lucky and have a boyfriend who is an amazing cook... but I digress. This place needs a bigger and better set up. The couples should be able to work together rather than in groups of 4. I could go on and on. Next time, I'd rather go to a super fancy restaurant and pay the $140. I'd say the best part of this experience was that you didn't have to wash your own dishes, ha. read more
