Wow! My daughter and I needed to get supplies for her crafty birthday party, and she is also an artist, so the time had finally come to visit Blick, and I'm so glad we did :) As we walked in, I ducked over toward the framing area to ask about something I was trying to take care of for my son, and the employee there was super helpful. While they didn't have what I needed for this weird shaped/sized poster he's got, she did have some great suggestions and also offered custom framing as an option. We soon got down to business for the party, and the gentleman by the registers walked us up and down the aisles to get exactly what we needed, and even gave cost-saving options for some stuff. When it was time to check out, he set up my daughter's account and made sure she was getting all the available discounts. Don't shop here if you don't fit the"suburban" look. Anita not only profiled and followed me around the store, but also had employees follow me around as well, like I was going to steal something. She's rude as a cashier, treating me like trash and acting like she didn't understand anything I said. It's humiliating. I hope she gets paid the big bucks to treat those who don't look like her as subhuman. read more

Selection is five stars, especially with the addition bringing this place closer in size to the Midtown location I usually shop at. Prices are two stars which is sadly pretty much par for the course with art supplies. Better learn to paint with reeds like Van Gogh if you're a starving artist. Parking is very tight quarters but fortunately I don't see any Ford F-750s that are a story tall and a full parking space wide down to the millimeter trying to pull in. I usually know what I want and can find it so I can't comment much on customer service but that's a good thing, right? They seem friendly enough. The new Malt mural by the registers is some wondrous eye candy and the diagonally oriented spray paint racks back there make those cans look plenty appealing. The Midtown Blick still reigns supreme with more wares to choose from even with the addition to this Royal Oak outlet. But even they don't have any visual flair to rival what's going on by the registers here. Besides the draining of my wallet of course. read more

This is the closest art store to me. I even used to go this same location, when it was the previous store, utrecht and before it became Blick. I will see since Blake took it over, the store seems more organized and cleaner. I can easily find everything that I need for my art supply. I come here for my canvas as well as paper for practicing my heart. I do also buy all of my Kerlix here. They have a Lotta great starter sets for beginner artist. And they have a lot of gray paint brushes, from the cheaper to the more expensive ones. My father-in-law and I are both fans of the art and appreciate I'm practice once in a while. He does it more often than me, but this is a great source for buying all of our paints and brushes for creating art. read more

A lovely lovely store. Workers are helpful, and the supplies are laid out so satisfyingly perfect, it's a joy to browse and you almost forget how small the actual store is. The aisles are very narrow but overall they have such a great selection of high quality art materials that I love this store so much. When recently searching for gel pens I saw them at Michaels. Then I went to Blicks and they were even cheaper by their regular price. I will go to Blicks for high-end art materials from now on. FYI the parking at the Royal Oak location is a bit tricky: it's angled, it's right on Woodward and it's pretty cramped. Be careful. read more

My wife and children are the artists in our family, but I'm the only one that writes reviews. So now that I'm here today for the 20th time and remembered to check in, let me summarize. Expensive? Yeah, a little, but only because good art supplies cost some money. So not more expensive than the alternatives! Quality? Yes, you see the well-known names in the industry all over the place here, as well as less expensive choices and house-brand products. Friendly staff? As far as I can tell, they're all friendly and knowledgeable enough to direct you to what you're looking for. My experiences here have been pleasant, and I recommend this as a good place to shop. read more

I'm not an artsy or crafty person, at all! Haha! So when I was looking for something in that realm, and the only craft store I know of didn't carry it, someone suggested that I try Blick. Not only did I find what I was looking for but if I ever need something for a diy art project, I know exactly where to go now. They had so many different paints, gels and paper supplies! I'm still not even sure what all I was looking at but it all looking pretty colorful and creative. I saw some really huge paint brushes and lots of different pens, pencils and things to create with. I was told that a lot of art school students shop there and I can see why. Blicks definitely covers a wide range of creative needs and I'm sure has all the supplies you would need. read more

We stopped by the Royal Oak store unplanned just to take a quick look around following a procedure I had at U of M. My daughter lives in Oak park and we dropped by to say hi and I had seen the store a few times before. It was about closing time and the beginning of an expected snow storm. The staff was so helpful in identifying a few things we were looking for and did not rush us out as we looked around. We did not feel pressure, and felt very welcome. We will definitely go again and be sure we leave enough time to "linger" when there are not capacity limits. Thanks again for an enjoyable experience. Disappointed that Hot Wire styrofoam engraver was listed by its company as being in stock at all of the Michigan stores only to be politely told that the engraver did not exist. Good thing is that I didn't waste my time visiting this store. I'll order it online. The person answering the phone was very polite and cordial. read more

I'm new to art and starting to take adult classes. I had to pick up several specific items that I was not sure how to find or how to select a decent item based on value and quality and the fact that painting is just a hobby for me. I asked 3-4 different employees for help each of them stopped what they were doing and helped me find and pick out exactly what I needed. One of the ladies just walked me around the store picking up the last of the items on my list that I was unable to find on my own. Really great customer service. They even allowed me to use the student discount since I'm a student for the class I was talking. I just felt way more support at BLICK than I have at any other hobby store that sells paint... I can't say they are cheaper than other art supply stores but the discount was awesome. read more

Have been getting my art supplies from here all of my "student and professional life". Now it is Utrecht's which I think is quite an improvement- I am sure they had quite a job reorganizing and cleaning this place up but it is so worth it when you come to shop! They have everything a person could want in the art world plus a very savvy manager and knowledgeable and creative thinking staff. On my last visit I went in to get some watercolor brushes for my girlfriend, and was informed of a regular volume discount that allowed me to buy five brushes she needed at a lower total cost than the regular prices of three brushes. read more

I'm fairly new at watercolor painting, and I wanted a face-to-face source (not online). I'd heard good things about Blick's, so I went. Whatever good things you've heard about this place don't even come close to the amazing experience I had today. It started with just getting into the store. I use a mobility scooter, and without boring you, dear reader, with the gruesome details, just know that it was quite a process. Once inside, I needed a lot of help. As a noob to my chosen medium, I had questions. Added to that, much of the merchandise was out of my reach. As a result, Liesel stayed with me the whole time, selecting and discarding brushes, paint, paper, and assorted accessories for more than an hour. This lovely lady deserves a raise at the very least. Also deserving of a shout-out is Starr, who assisted in Operation GetInTheDoor, and was generally very helpful. In short (too late!) this is the ONLY art supply house you should consider. The selection, the knowledge, the spectacular service cannot be equalled. read more

I called the store to ask a simple question and I was immediately placed on hold and wasn't allowed to even speak... after waiting several minutes I hung up and called back, the same person answered the phone and I told her I had been on hold and I just had a simple question as they were about to close within the next half hour and I needed to know if they had an item there so I could rush over there to buy it. This young lady on the phone was very dismissive and wanted nothing to do with anything I had to say. she went on to say they are very busy and they will get to me whenever they can and placed me on hold again as I was still speaking. I've never had such terrible service over the phone from any company I've ever called. I would never shop here. Terrible first impression. read more

This is a lovely little store, and I first started poking my head in about a year ago. The staff there is outgoing and welcoming. They are more than happy to let you browse but also are completely friendly and more than happy to help - just ask. By far, the staff sets it apart, and that says something when you realize just how much value is in this store! For comparison, this is not Michaels, Hobby Lobby, or Joanns. This is a tiny little store - but for the size, it comes PACKED with goodness. If you are a serious artist or are serious about supplies, this is the store you need to come to. If you go into those other stores, the associates that are serious about art may tell you the same (which is how I was originally referred to Blick!) First of all, the value in this store is simply awesome. If you aren't familiar with art stores - you are paying for an art supply, not a bulk #2 pencil. Items are going to cost a little bit - and that'll be true if you go to the aforementioned stores as well. You'll pay a similar price whether you go here or anywhere else. What you can expect from the supplies here is different. The 'low end' items in this store are on par with the mid to high end items at other 'craft' stores. This is because Blick specializes in art supplies. For example - Prismacolor is typically a high end colored pencil brand at other stores - here, it is the entry level of what they offer. They also offer the In-Store Brand Blick pencils, which are a softer alternative - but have their own unique properties (and arguably more consistent lightfastness). Blick features almost all of this information directly on their website. Try to find something about lightfastness with the store brands of other 'craft stores' - that's not even something that their corporate can look up for you. Blick doesn't provide this quality for just pencils - they do it for pastels, markers, paints (oil, acrylic, watercolor) - you are going to get quality when you come to this store. You can do additional research and decide what type of quality you want - prismacolors aren't rated 100 year lightfast, but Blick carries supplies that are. No matter who you are, no matter what your experience level is with art, if you are SERIOUS about getting into your art - if you are serious about getting supplies that suit your needs, this is the place to come. Not all supplies are the same. Some pencil brands are softer, some are harder - you can get a feel for that by coming here and you can pick out the supplies that best fit you. You will walk out of this store feeling more confident, and you won't be going home to 'try out' your supplies - because you'll already have done that at the store. So yes, they have a website, and you can order off of that. The store will match any of the website deals and can have lower prices - at the store, you get the lower of those two prices. For me, the website is a great reference for properties, and for planning colors and lightfastness. But if the supplies don't feel right at the store, I can always get something that matches me better. Keep in mind, you don't have to pay an arm and a leg to get art supplies. Blick does have specials, but their prices are always reasonable and don't require coupons. They do offer some regular price savings and you can get these by ordering their catalog. But consider stopping in, even for the little things. If you have a younger kid who likes art, and you want to do something, even something small to support it - go in and get them a small Colored Pencil Set during one of Blick's Back to School Specials. You can walk out with a set of colored pencils for under $10 - and the difference between these and your back typical to school set is immediately noticeable. The best part though, is getting to support a local business - and getting to support this business. I appreciate being able to support the staff of this store and having a store like this in our community, and I hope that it will be here for a long time to come. This is a little store that grows on you. Go here, you will get quality. Go here, you will get friendly service. Go here, you will find what you need to fall in love with art (again). read more

Way overpriced of course but that's to be expected. Still -1 star. Also could not help but overhear a very loud and very rude employee (Sarah) complaining non stop about a parent who simply called to find out if they carry copics because her child wanted them. The phone conversation lasted no longer than 30 seconds and the employee wouldn't shut up about how silly and annoying the parent was. A prime example of projecting your issues on to someone else. Shut up and do your job. Save the gossiping for when you're not clocked in and in a small store with at least 10 other people in here. Makes you look like you talk shit about every customer that dares to ask a question. read more

i go to utrecht maybe once a week for school. the staff is always very nice and helpful. one of my friends REALLY wanted to take advantage of a sale on spray paint they were having, but he was working on the day of the sale. i called them and asked them if i could prepay for the paint and pick it up the next day since i didn't know what colors he wanted, and they just told me to stop in the next day (even though the sale was over) and let them know and they'd set us up, which they did. another time, we were buying supplies and i was about 1.40 short. i was really sad, i did everything i could. i went back to the car and fished out about 75 more cents. the girl behind the counter cut out some coupons from behind the counter, scanned them, scanned an art smart card for us, and even fished out change from her own pockets to help. together, we ended up having exactly enough after all the effort she put into giving us discounts. that was really very kind of her, the nicest thing anyone has ever done. they always let you know what they have in stock or when they will be refilling stock. i really appreciate that. one time i was searching for a very rare color paint and called them to ask if they had it. they were actually nice enough to tell me they were out of stock but gave me a phone number to another utrecht that did across the country (talk about a hard to find color). because they were called by another store, the utrecht across the country gave me one can for free and gave me free shipping. but be warned. the parking here is absolute BS. there's barely enough room to back out and you have to be super careful, there's a ton of huge potholes and cars speeding only a couple feet away on woodward. be very careful! read more

My dad and I went here about a week ago and I found it to be a really nice art supply store. Though I'm not an avid artist, I had to come here for my college art class. I liked that it was really only art supplies, and not arts and crafts stuff. It's expensive to be and artist but this is the place to go. The staff was very helpful because neither my dad nor I really knew what we were looking for. It was great and if I did more artistic things and needed serious art supplies, this is most definitely the place I would go to get everything. They have a great selection of paint, brushes, different weights and sizes of paper, easels, you name it, they have it in tons of different colors and sizes. read more

This is an awesome art supplier. I go here often for school and person projects. They usually have everything I need, and if they don't, they can get it quickly. Prices are about average for the art market, but they do offer frequent coupons and an ArtSmart card that gives you 10% if you're a student. I had to shop here because the art supply store I used for the past 3 years was going out of business, I was greeted by a friendly employee who helped me find what I needed. I took my paints to the check out counter and waited a full 4 minutes for a clerk, despite a staff (literally within my reach) who appeared to be occupied with a small display. When the staff (who was at the display) finally came to ring up my purchase, I realized that it was the same ''assistant manager'' that was so obnoxious three years ago.
