Limited street parking, a medium sized free city lot behind. If you are looing for a store that sells Michigan themed books, gifts, cooking related items, and other random small gift/decorating items, this is it. Everything is laid out in loosely grouped subdivisions. Women love this store. read more

I discovered this shop about a month ago and have visited three times since, making purchases on each visit. I always bring my girlfriend with me when I come in. However, I've noticed a consistent pattern that's made me increasingly uncomfortable. Each time we're in the store, the staff behaves as if we're being watched closely--asking if we want items held at the counter or having an employee follow us under the pretense of folding shirts while we browse. I've spent over $100 here so far and don't appreciate being treated with suspicion. Having worked in retail myself, I'm familiar with the signs of someone being monitored because they're assumed to be stealing, and that's how it feels every time I shop here. I really like the shop's selection--especially the Jellycats--but there are other local stores that carry similar products. I'm willing to give the shop one more chance, but if I experience this same treatment again, I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Store has good products. It might make it better if it was a more friendly atmosphere. A "hello" or "thank you" and a smile would be nice.

This place is your one stop shop for any & all adorable and cute trinkets & inspirational gift ideas you could have for basically anyone in your life, and now whenever I have a loved one's birthday or the general gifting holidays come up, you can't stop me from going here to search for goodies - big and small - for all the people in my life. There are tons of options for stocking stuffers, but also tons of options for thoughtful, larger scale gifts. And do you know what the best part of Catching Fireflies is? That they have 3 different locations in SE Michigan, and trust that I've been to all 3! They are all similar in the sense that they all offer an overabundance of cute & thoughtful tchotchkes & gift ideas, but also different in the sense that no two are alike. The floor plans and the products offered are different amongst all 3, which makes it all the more fun (or challenging, however you look at it) to hunt for the perfect treasures to gift your loved ones. Do yourself a favor and check out the nearest Catching Fireflies to you - there's one in Ann Arbor, Berkley (check out their sister store Yellow Door Art Market two doors down from this location), and Rochester. It'll make your life more colorful & adorable and your gift hunting much easier & more fun! read more

Great selection and awesome stuff. And staff are great to get guidance from. And hours are great for store of this type.

I love this store. Such adorable, eccentric, quirky, fun local-made items. Plus, there are a fair amount of beautiful items like colorful scarves and the like. The workers are sweet and helpful. read more

Catching Fireflies is one of those gift stores that have been popping up all over lately (i.e. Leon & Lulu, Shine, etc.) These stores are great and have lots of cool stuff. It's not anything that you need, but there is so much that you want. Catching Fireflies is no exception and it is a great place to find that unique gift you've been looking for. It's located on 12 Mile in Berkley in a really nice corner space. First off, I love love love the name. I think it's perfect. Second, I think the location is great in Downtown Berkley. Third, I think that the store is great on the corner with lots of little rooms to explore. The store has all kinds of gifts and items. There are a lot of things for kids with a whole room dedicated to them. This place has so many cool things you could spend all day. The women who were in the store were very friendly and helpful. I would recommend going here to look for that item for the hard-to-buy-for person this Christmas or anytime. read more

You won't go into this store without finding something for a gift or for yourself. They have such a fun, unique mix of items to choose from. I come in here regularly throughout the year and I love it every time I go. This store has always had a variety of items to choose from that help you to buy for dads, dog lovers, children, etc. The prices make sense for what you're buying which is also why I love shopping in here. They also have a great card selection. It's definitely worth stopping in if you're close by! Help support a small business! read more

Super cute stuff and great place to find something unique for that hard to buy for person (or yourself!). The negative - and I should have noticed this before buying but I did not - but they do not do refunds, only exchanges. read more

Another awesome local store in Berkley! They have so many unique things to find. Love their selection of cards. They always have out a seasonal display -right now lots of Christmas and winter products. Love the collection of Michigan items. There's an area in the front with wedding and love themed items that is my go to when I need a shower or wedding present! Also staff is nice and helpful--always friendly. read more

This place is a great store! They have gifts for every type of person/child/infant you might be looking for. I always find the cutest gifts here and even extra stuff for myself that I didn't know I needed but had to have. haha Bonus: they will also gift wrap your purchase for you, free of charge. The staff are very helpful and friendly as well. read more

My go-to spot for holiday or birthday gifts! There is always something new when you come in and I have never left without buying at least 3 things. Many items come from artisans so you are bound to find something unique. The staff are very nice and friendly as well. I tell people about this place all the time, and recommend to everyone to go check out! I love this place! read more

Love love love this store! While things have been closed for the pandemic, they updated their website and made it super easy to navigate. They have such a wide selection of fun and quirky items! And then they offered contact-free carry out to my car. And everything was well wrapped and protected. They were so nice and friendly! Such a wonderful experience. read more

I love and hate Catching Fireflies. They have THE CUTEST stuff in there. You could walk around this relatively small store for ages and still not see everything. You could find dozens of things for everyone on your shopping list. The problem? NONE of it is anything anyone NEEDS - it's just stuff that is fun to have (and to give). Thats my dilemma, nothing is practical, but IT SURE IS FUN. read more

We turned up about 15 minutes before closing and they didn't cringe, so that was cool, haha! Staff was really nice when my aunt was trying to see if they had a style of socks we saw on the men's display also in women's size (they did!) This shop reminded me of my old favorite gift shop when I lived in Texas (Sleeping Lizzards in Denton) with their variety and selection, but there was SO MUCH stuff that we definitely did not do it justice in the small time we were there. Would definitely return! read more

I love this place. It is my go-to for gifts (for others and myself). I can almost always find something to buy. It can get pricey, but I don't mind when it's handcrafted items that are often from local artists. They have a great selection of purses that are unique enough to stand out, but traditional enough to use everyday. I am quite the purse-whore and this place feeds my addiction. There is also a good selection of greeting cards, baby gifts, picture frames, kitchen gadgets, etc. At Christmas (and other holidays, to a lesser degree) they have great home decor. All of my winter/xmas wreaths & door hangings are from Catching Fireflies. Every visit to the store you can fill out an entry form for their monthly drawing to win a gift card to the store (I have yet to win though...). They also have a cat that wanders around the store which is just one of the things gives the place a unique feeling. read more

I don't know how you CAN'T love this store! I don't think there's ever been a time when I didn't walk out with something. If you're looking for any kind of gift (Christmas, birthday, housewarming, wedding, bachelorette, etc.), you can find something unique that the person will love. I've bought just about every kind of product they have here. I have a purse that I get compliments on every time I carry it. A good friend of mine got married so I bought a beautiful picture frame made from wood and hand painted. They also personalize them (I got their names and their wedding date put on it), gift wrap it for free, and ship it if you'd like. Last night I went there and it is like a hand-made winter wonderland with beautiful Christmas decorations including door signs, tree ornaments, picture holders, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, the list goes on. They really do have everything, and you can check out their website if you don't believe me! Also, if you sign up for their e-mails, they send you one every couple of weeks to show you what's new in the store, as well as updates on current promotions. Sometimes they have awesome deals where you can roll three dice and the number you roll is the percent they'll take off your bill. Or they have little "doorbusters" where the first so many people receive something. They also have another location in Rochester that is just as nice for those who don't live in the Berkley area. read more

Every downtown area needs a quirky gift shop. Berkley's is Catching Fireflies. Their corner store on 12 Mile is jam packed with great gifts ideas for everyone. Expect to see stock displayed in retro refrigerators, sinks, or even sitting on a dinette! Take your time to peruse the greeting cards and admire the pottery. There are tiles akin to Pewabic--maybe they are?--featuring depictions of Venus fly traps, martini shakers, and seahorses. There is décor for home and garden in the front along with office supply novelties, and other touches of whimsy. Ryan L. pointed out these books where you get to choose the character for them; imagine reading Romeo and Juliet or Alice in Wonderland starring your friends! I swear, none of my friends better make me Juliet's Nurse, or else. . . There are large jewelry displays made by local artisans and a section just for babies in the back. I like the portion of the store that has kitchen wares like octopus wine stoppers, animal shaped popsicle molds, and dinosaur shaped training chopsticks. Catching Fireflies is a great place to start if you're on the hunt for a great gift item. I know that I will always be excited to see a snail tape dispense or cuff made of a recycled Pepsi can. I will also say this is the first place that I saw Gurgle Pots. If you haven't seen a Gurgle Pot, keep your eyes open (and ears) open--they're everywhere. There is also a store cat which always is synonymous with quality. . . meow. read more

Something no one else mentioned yet was the wonderful cards. I always go there for cards and always find the perfect one !!!!

We've all got that one person who always finds the best presents or trinkets. You know the one. Your sister-in-law, your cousin's boyfriend, the coworker in marketing. She wears the sweetest scarf, he brings the deliciously kitschy card. Let me share a little secret with you, Yelpers. The cat's out of the bag on where to source your own charming books for the kids and the perfect spatula for your has-everything mom's kitchen. The name of your secret weapon? Catching Fireflies in downtown Berkley. Catching Fireflies downloads the essence of Amazon with Portland's eclectic boutiques, Papyrus, and the one Etsy store to die for into a one-stop treasure chest. Calling this just a stationary shop or a gift store does not deliver justice to the spectacle of inanimate wit and personality. Every corner pops with colour and interest. I started off with the seasonal displays laid out on country kitchen shelves and barrels. At a glance, I found an array of witty books for grads including ubiquitous Doctor Seuss and Zen mantras (good in this economy), jewel patterned umbrellas, and tumblers begging for a hot summer afternoon. The store splits into a sumptuous array of children's toys, from stuffed animals to the playsets that kept me occupied and learning over a weekend. Unique gifts for the impossible tween set can be picked up without a headache, and you can be sure your purchase will be unique. Home décor is the real star of the show, though. Household gizmos you know you need but can never find seem to spill out from the woodwork, all with a strong emphasis on playful form as well as good ol' functionality. Who wants a tape dispenser or a scrubber in any colour as long as it's black/green? Pick up a package of ladybugs to wash your pans instead and make chore time fun time. That empty space on the bathroom wall might just fit a vintage metal clock or a glazed tile panel in a whimsical theme, like lily pads or the Detroit skyline. All in all, this is becoming my go-to for housewarming and birthday presents, accessories, and decorations in my new home. read more

After hearing about Catching Fireflies all the time and visiting the website a gazillion times, we finally decided to step in. We were only supposed to grab a couple of Slushee Mugs and be on our way. Only it wasn't that easy. The moment I stepped in, it was easy to tell that just stopping in for a "quick second" was a no-no. Catching Fireflies has so many interesting, and sometimes useful, novelties, everything from jewelry to candy to dog toys, that's it damn-near impossible not to have that itch to look around. If you've been around the internet once or twice, then you know what kind of novelties to expect, but they also carry a ton of items from local artists, all of which are pretty cool. To keep a long story short: I went in only planning to stay for 30 seconds, but wound up staying for 15 minutes and if I had more time to spare I would have stayed longer and bought more stuff. Catching Fireflies is definitely a great stop for a unique gift. read more

This place is a overpriced and overrated junk shop. They sell junk. If you want a cheap looking gift to give then this is the place for you. I've had a few interactions with the owner and she's the original Karen. Stay away. read more

Great place to buy a gift for your girlfriend/wife/mom/sister/whatever. Everything is in my mind, overpriced, but at the same time seems cool enough to justify it. Just beware, if you bring said g/w/m/s/w to this store, you will be there MUCH longer than you want to... ;-) read more

I love the spirit of this store! It encourages the visitor to explore every corner by offering a wide assortment of unusual and clever items. More than likely, you will come across at least one item that has you asking yourself, "Why didn't *I* think of that?" The staff is pleasant, helpful, and not pushy. This allows you to explore freely. (No deadwood here.) I also like that if you aren't into the whole rummaging around a store scene, you can visit their online site and find just what you're looking for easy-peasy. This is my go-to store whenever I'm in a bind to find a gift for anyone. It is a real problem solver... and an enjoyable one at that. read more

Such a cute store! I prefer their sister store, the Yellow Door Art Market, simply because it's all stuff made my individual artisits, but this place is great for mass-produced gifts that are still awesome. read more

This is just a groovy little store, filled with trinkets for all occasions. If you need just the right gift, you're bound to find something out here. The staff is really helpful and ready to make suggestions if you are clueless. read more

Catching Firefly's is a staple to Berkley. They have all sorts of intricate artsy and hand made gifts here. This is the place I go to get my wife her Christmas present as they have unique items. If you check in here using the Yelp app you usually get 10% off too! Some of the things they have are handmade jewelry, books, gag gifts, picture frames, art photos, kids toys, and the list goes on. All the workers are very nice and helpful too! I come back every year and you should start now! read more

This is the kind of store I'd love to own! All of the other reviews have given great detail to what the store has to offer, so I won't spend too much time explaining. I needed a very special card today.. not just a generic one from the aisles of CVS. I was directed here, and their card and stationary section was cute and exactly what I needed. The staff was really nice and the store kitty was friendly too. Such a selection and variety of cool gifts.. I will definitely come here when I need something unique and thoughtful. read more

This is a fabulous gift shop and we totally stumbled on it after visiting it's sister store Yellow Door which is about 3 doors West on 12 Mile. I couldn't believe how much stuff they could pack in this one store! If you can't find a gift for someone or for yourself in here, you're crazy! It took us over an hour to see everything and I'm sure we missed a lot. Oh, and the service is fabulous. Found a little gift for my mom and wanted to get one for my boyfriend's mom too but there was only one. The ladies offered to take my number and call if they have one at their Rochester store so I'm hoping to get a call. read more

Others have already mentioned that this is a great place to check out for unique little gifts and handcrafted items. The owner actively seeks out stock from indie artists, which is great to see. I like the stress on recycling items--both in the fixtures (like card racks made from recycled, brightly painted doors and metal gutters or.a vintage refrigerator used to display magnets) and in imaginative items for sale like drinking glasses made from old pop bottles or tote bags created from recycled T-shirts. It's a great place to shop for eco-friendly gifts for especially eco-conscious folks on your gift list. There are also a lot of cute things for the kids on your gift list. Last time I was in there, I noticed a lot of "Made in Michigan" signs on the shelves. Nice seeing the emphasis on supporting local artisans and products. read more

I waiver between five stars because it was just soooooo cute and four stars because I didn't buy anything. Ultimately, I decided I didn't buy anything because I was not in the buying mood... So why would you go there? Like others have mentioned, baby showers, house warming, engagement, maybe a cute box topper for a wedding - special events where you would want a little something unique to set your gift apart from the rest. They have potato sack kitchen towels that are great. I saw a cute corkscrew trivet that you put your own corks on - I think I may go back and buy it for my boss who is an avid wine drinker. It is definitely worth the stop, especially if there is parking available. read more

Catching Fireflies is like a candy store, except it's for adults. And it's home decor and other treats instead of candy. Ok.....maybe the metaphor doesn't exactly work, but I love this place. This is my go-to place for gifts, although if I'm being honest, I'm usually guilty of spending more on myself than the giftee (I always laugh when they offer to gift-wrap all the items I just purchased for myself :-)). This is not the type of place to just run in and grab something--you'll definitely want to budget some time to wander around the different "sections"--home decor, jewelry, tons of picture frames, wedding, new baby, kitchen, seasonal/holiday stuff, soaps and beauty supplies, the best smelling candles ever (seriously, even the men in your life will notice how delicious your house smells), kids stuff, pet themed items...I could go on and on. They also have a lovely selection of greeting cards, including ones with quotes that you can buy a frame for--this is a nice inexpensive gift if you're really blanking on what to get someone. While there is *a lot* of stuff in the store, it's not so overwhelming that my guy friends won't go there to buy me birthday presents--I think that says a lot about the layout--busy but not crazy--and the staff--pleasant and willing to answer questions, but not pushy. They also have a resident cat--I know some people don't like that sort of thing, but I'm a total sucker for a store mascot :-) read more

This boutique is pretty cool. They've got massive amounts of really creative merch from specialized greeting cards, to cookbooks to cool grill accessory gifts for the husband. There's most definitely something for everyone and if you're looking for a unique gift I'd start here. Also, if you're into making your own artsy gifts this is a great place to get amazing ideas.
