I discovered this shop about a month ago and have visited three times since, making purchases on each visit. I always bring my girlfriend with me when I come in. However, I've noticed a consistent pattern that's made me increasingly uncomfortable. Each time we're in the store, the staff behaves as if we're being watched closely--asking if we want items held at the counter or having an employee follow us under the pretense of folding shirts while we browse. I've spent over $100 here so far and don't appreciate being treated with suspicion. Having worked in retail myself, I'm familiar with the signs of someone being monitored because they're assumed to be stealing, and that's how it feels every time I shop here. I really like the shop's selection--especially the Jellycats--but there are other local stores that carry similar products. I'm willing to give the shop one more chance, but if I experience this same treatment again, I will be taking my business elsewhere. read more

Catching Fireflies is one of those gift stores that have been popping up all over lately (i.e. Leon & Lulu, Shine, etc.) These stores are great and have lots of cool stuff. It's not anything that you need, but there is so much that you want. Catching Fireflies is no exception and it is a great place to find that unique gift you've been looking for. It's located on 12 Mile in Berkley in a really nice corner space. First off, I love love love the name. I think it's perfect. Second, I think the location is great in Downtown Berkley. Third, I think that the store is great on the corner with lots of little rooms to explore. The store has all kinds of gifts and items. There are a lot of things for kids with a whole room dedicated to them. This place has so many cool things you could spend all day. The women who were in the store were very friendly and helpful. Staff was really nice when my aunt was trying to see if they had a style of socks we saw on the men's display also in women's size (they did!) This shop reminded me of my old favorite gift shop when I lived in Texas (Sleeping Lizzards in Denton) with their variety and selection, but there was SO MUCH stuff that we definitely did not do it justice in the small time we were there. I love and hate Catching Fireflies. They have THE CUTEST stuff in there. You could walk around this relatively small store for ages and still not see everything. You could find dozens of things for everyone on your shopping list. The problem? NONE of it is anything anyone NEEDS - it's just stuff that is fun to have (and to give). I love this place. It is my go-to for gifts (for others and myself). I can almost always find something to buy. It can get pricey, but I don't mind when it's handcrafted items that are often from local artists. They have a great selection of purses that are unique enough to stand out, but traditional enough to use everyday. I am quite the purse-whore and this place feeds my addiction. There is also a good selection of greeting cards, baby gifts, picture frames, kitchen gadgets, etc. At Christmas (and other holidays, to a lesser degree) they have great home decor. All of my winter/xmas wreaths & door hangings are from Catching Fireflies. Every visit to the store you can fill out an entry form for their monthly drawing to win a gift card to the store (I have yet to win though...). They also have a cat that wanders around the store which is just one of the things gives the place a unique feeling. read more

I don't know how you CAN'T love this store! I don't think there's ever been a time when I didn't walk out with something. If you're looking for any kind of gift (Christmas, birthday, housewarming, wedding, bachelorette, etc.), you can find something unique that the person will love. I've bought just about every kind of product they have here. I have a purse that I get compliments on every time I carry it. A good friend of mine got married so I bought a beautiful picture frame made from wood and hand painted. They also personalize them (I got their names and their wedding date put on it), gift wrap it for free, and ship it if you'd like. Last night I went there and it is like a hand-made winter wonderland with beautiful Christmas decorations including door signs, tree ornaments, picture holders, dishes, salt and pepper shakers, the list goes on. They really do have everything, and you can check out their website if you don't believe me! Also, if you sign up for their e-mails, they send you one every couple of weeks to show you what's new in the store, as well as updates on current promotions. Sometimes they have awesome deals where you can roll three dice and the number you roll is the percent they'll take off your bill. Or they have little "doorbusters" where the first so many people receive something. Expect to see stock displayed in retro refrigerators, sinks, or even sitting on a dinette! Take your time to peruse the greeting cards and admire the pottery. There are tiles akin to Pewabic--maybe they are?--featuring depictions of Venus fly traps, martini shakers, and seahorses. There is décor for home and garden in the front along with office supply novelties, and other touches of whimsy. Ryan L. pointed out these books where you get to choose the character for them; imagine reading Romeo and Juliet or Alice in Wonderland starring your friends! I swear, none of my friends better make me Juliet's Nurse, or else. . . There are large jewelry displays made by local artisans and a section just for babies in the back. I like the portion of the store that has kitchen wares like octopus wine stoppers, animal shaped popsicle molds, and dinosaur shaped training chopsticks. Catching Fireflies is a great place to start if you're on the hunt for a great gift item. I know that I will always be excited to see a snail tape dispense or cuff made of a recycled Pepsi can. I will also say this is the first place that I saw Gurgle Pots. If you haven't seen a Gurgle Pot, keep your eyes open (and ears) open--they're everywhere. I started off with the seasonal displays laid out on country kitchen shelves and barrels. At a glance, I found an array of witty books for grads including ubiquitous Doctor Seuss and Zen mantras (good in this economy), jewel patterned umbrellas, and tumblers begging for a hot summer afternoon. The store splits into a sumptuous array of children's toys, from stuffed animals to the playsets that kept me occupied and learning over a weekend. Unique gifts for the impossible tween set can be picked up without a headache, and you can be sure your purchase will be unique. Home décor is the real star of the show, though. Household gizmos you know you need but can never find seem to spill out from the woodwork, all with a strong emphasis on playful form as well as good ol' functionality. Who wants a tape dispenser or a scrubber in any colour as long as it's black/green? Pick up a package of ladybugs to wash your pans instead and make chore time fun time. After hearing about Catching Fireflies all the time and visiting the website a gazillion times, we finally decided to step in. We were only supposed to grab a couple of Slushee Mugs and be on our way. Only it wasn't that easy. The moment I stepped in, it was easy to tell that just stopping in for a "quick second" was a no-no. Catching Fireflies has so many interesting, and sometimes useful, novelties, everything from jewelry to candy to dog toys, that's it damn-near impossible not to have that itch to look around. If you've been around the internet once or twice, then you know what kind of novelties to expect, but they also carry a ton of items from local artists, all of which are pretty cool. To keep a long story short: I went in only planning to stay for 30 seconds, but wound up staying for 15 minutes and if I had more time to spare I would have stayed longer and bought more stuff. This is a fabulous gift shop and we totally stumbled on it after visiting it's sister store Yellow Door which is about 3 doors West on 12 Mile. I couldn't believe how much stuff they could pack in this one store! If you can't find a gift for someone or for yourself in here, you're crazy! It took us over an hour to see everything and I'm sure we missed a lot. Oh, and the service is fabulous. Found a little gift for my mom and wanted to get one for my boyfriend's mom too but there was only one. I like the stress on recycling items--both in the fixtures (like card racks made from recycled, brightly painted doors and metal gutters or.a vintage refrigerator used to display magnets) and in imaginative items for sale like drinking glasses made from old pop bottles or tote bags created from recycled T-shirts. It's a great place to shop for eco-friendly gifts for especially eco-conscious folks on your gift list. There are also a lot of cute things for the kids on your gift list. I waiver between five stars because it was just soooooo cute and four stars because I didn't buy anything. Ultimately, I decided I didn't buy anything because I was not in the buying mood... So why would you go there? Like others have mentioned, baby showers, house warming, engagement, maybe a cute box topper for a wedding - special events where you would want a little something unique to set your gift apart from the rest. They have potato sack kitchen towels that are great. I saw a cute corkscrew trivet that you put your own corks on - I think I may go back and buy it for my boss who is an avid wine drinker. Catching Fireflies is like a candy store, except it's for adults. And it's home decor and other treats instead of candy. Ok.....maybe the metaphor doesn't exactly work, but I love this place. This is my go-to place for gifts, although if I'm being honest, I'm usually guilty of spending more on myself than the giftee (I always laugh when they offer to gift-wrap all the items I just purchased for myself :-)). This is not the type of place to just run in and grab something--you'll definitely want to budget some time to wander around the different "sections"--home decor, jewelry, tons of picture frames, wedding, new baby, kitchen, seasonal/holiday stuff, soaps and beauty supplies, the best smelling candles ever (seriously, even the men in your life will notice how delicious your house smells), kids stuff, pet themed items...I could go on and on. They also have a lovely selection of greeting cards, including ones with quotes that you can buy a frame for--this is a nice inexpensive gift if you're really blanking on what to get someone. While there is *a lot* of stuff in the store, it's not so overwhelming that my guy friends won't go there to buy me birthday presents--I think that says a lot about the layout--busy but not crazy--and the staff--pleasant and willing to answer questions, but not pushy. This boutique is pretty cool. They've got massive amounts of really creative merch from specialized greeting cards, to cookbooks to cool grill accessory gifts for the husband. This place is so cute, right in the heart of downtown Berkley. My girls and I were running errands and started at Yellow Door. Catching Fireflies is it's sister store for more of the younger crowd. My girls love it. It has cute toys, fairy doors, a whole whimsical doggy section, and gosh.. so much more. It is pretty clustered in there.. You really have to watch what you are doing..
