This is a gift store which had fancy candles and fun little things to tempt you to buy, little notebooks and books and knickknacks.

A lovely store in downtown RO. Lots of locally made goods, including treats, home decor, gifts, etc. And it's layout is really great. Not so cluttered that you can't turn around, great lighting and unique ways of displaying items. My lower rating is because of the service to potential vendors. It seems non existent. I'd love to hear from any active vendor there. I dropped off my card (after messaging them via their website, email and Instagram over several months) to inquire about becoming a vendor and never heard back. Maybe they don't have any vendor openings or they don't think my art is a good fit. That's fine. However, I think a courtesy email telling me that should be a normal expectation, though? One of the coolest boutiques I've been in, in the metro Detroit area! I love how they had complimentary coconut chai I could sip on while I browsed. They have an amazing selection of all kinds of local brands I've never heard of/ out of state brands and also brands I've heard of but haven't tried such as Lollia, ds&durga. There is a great variety here and such diverse items from cocktail mixers and kitchen items to little baby items to unique jewelry and perfumes and wearables. When I was in there was a cool display on the ceiling of hot air balloons that was super artsy and a display in front for pride items and plants! This boutique has something fun for everyone and unique greeting cards too. This is a great place to shop for anyone and a great gift place for even the pickiest person on your list! read more

Nice specialty shop located in downtown Royal Oak. Seems to have several main area's of focus for mens, women and children to include scented candles, incense and oils, large selection of personal hygiene items, home bar merchandize (my favorite area), tea's, small unique kids toy area, plants, puzzles, cards and the list goes on and on. It is a relatively small footprint shop that has a surprisingly large assortment of merchandize to include unique stuff you will not find anywhere else local. I probably spent 20 minutes walking around this small shop adding future Xmas/Bday gift idea's to my list for those guy's/gals in my family that are hard to shop for. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE but have only come here maybe 3 times total in the past 7 years because it is PRICEY and I always end up spending so much money here because I want everything!!! Everything there is so cute, they sell so many plants, plant accessories, and other plant-related things, tarot cards, regular cards, puzzles, jewelry, pet goodies, baby books, fandom-gifts - the list goes on. It's such a good place to get some classy, thoughtful gifts for friends & family for all sorts of occasions, and there are always new, unique products to check out! Stopped by here while waiting for an appointment in Royal Oak and was so pleasantly surprised by what I found. Such a lovely curated space with all sorts of fun, uncommon goods. This is the kind of place I love to shop for fun gifts. The kind of eclectic gifts that no one really NEEDS, but people always love. You will likely spend more time here than you thought you would. There's a lot packed into this small footprint. You might even need to circle around a second time to really make sure you took it all in. Staff was very friendly, which can be great, but also maybe a little much for me. I'm not a people-person when I shop, so getting asked if I needed help our if they could take the one thing I was holding to the register by FOUR separate people in such a small space while the store was practically empty was a little bit of a turn off. You could wander around this little store for an hour and not see everything.. I circled three times and then decided I had spent enough money but promised myself I would come back soon. Super cute shop for gift items. Reminds me of the miscellaneous homeware, books, gifts, and novelty items you might find at Urban Outfitters or Francesca's. I was shopping some of the stores on Washington Street after brunch at Lily's and stopped in Rail & Anchor. Lots of funny/cute books, candles with Lady GaGa and the Golden Girls on them, coffee mugs, barware, essential oils, shaving accessories, tea, unique artist made jewelry and succulents. The staff was warm and friendly and offered samples of hot tea when I came in. Everything was adorable but a little over priced. read more

I walked in and they had me at Hello! The only way I can describe this place is whimsical! I has been a while since a store has made me want to explore every inch. It is full of wonderful odds and ends. A perfect place to go when you need a gift, but have no idea what you actually looking for. There is something there to satisfy all of your senses. Like candles? incense? aromatherapy? They have it? Need assistance to add to an adult beverage? Yup, that too. Are you a plant person? Need a cool card? Cheeky gifts? Ok, you get it. I can't get over how cute this place is. I've been into quite a few eclectic stores like this and I always enjoy them but this one just had a special little edge. Everything in the store feels purposeful and is honestly something I'd be tempted to buy! They have lots of items for a home bar, camping, birthday gifts, and more. We got something for our home bar and I'd like to come back again to look for some birthday gifts for friends. So many witty items and practical gadgets. And the best part was the group of friendly women at the cashiers. They brought out snacks to a pup walking outside, complimented my mac n cheese mask, and were just generally very friendly. Whoever started this store is a genius! Wooden ornaments of Tupac, curated jewelry from artisans in Michigan, and an array of unique trinkets that are cute, brash, and blunt?! Count me in! This gem is a must visit if you're in the area. It has the sensibility of an anthropology with its array of home goods and Jewelry just subtract the clothes and add a bit more edge. So it's like Anthros hotter younger sister who's your born and raised Michigander girl next door who drinks whiskey and reads tarot cards all while listening to Notorious B.I.G. The interiors are eclectic and fun while the merchandise is thoughtfully staged. I can spend hours getting lost in this store because there's always something to discover, and I can NEVER leave without buying something! They had some really cool succulent plants in blown glass hanging containers, some kitchen kitsch, men's grooming supplies and a mish-mash of other trinkets and art work worth looking over. The book selection is carefully curated (currently pining for a Frida Kalho edition). On a whim, I purchased a DS&Durga cologne, Debaser, which is so wonderful and not readily available elsewhere. Rail & Anchor is a perfectly curated shop with unique gifts for just about everyone. I would compare it to City Bird/Anthropologie or Black Lamb/Rebel Reclaimed if you're from Grand Rapids (like me). It was hard for me to walk around this shop without seeing something I HAD to have for either me or a friend. I ended up getting a mug for a friend and a tiny succulent and a candle for myself. The shop itself is large, with an old red Jeep in the back that's used as a display. I was offered a small cup of tea upon entering the store, which was a nice touch on a cold and windy April day! Since I live on the opposite side of the state, I'm bummed that Rail and Anchor doesn't have an online shop, but according to their website, it might be coming soon! I will certainly be back the next time I'm in town because I'm a complete sucker for stores like these, especially when they sell locally-made goods. read more

I love this place! Locally run by a wonderfully attentive staff, Rail & Anchor is like a less stuffy version of Anthropologie's home department. (Not only does the staff warmly greet you, but they also offer hot tea and offer help throughout your visit!) Living in the hipster epicentre around here, I knew it was inevitable Ferndale/Royal Oak would see a Name & Name store appear. Would it be Willow & Fig, Pig & Ebony or Black & Sail to open up? Fortunately none of the randomly generated hipster shops debuted on Washington. Instead the swanky, tea-drinking hipster pirates came into port. Rail and Anchor is, unquestionably, a place for the gentleman with a taste for pleasures of the past, the woman with an eye for the uncommon treasure, and the child who wants old school toys without bells and whistles, thank you, Mother. It does speak to a slice of society whom appreciate doing it themselves, erudite jokes, and natural scents. The people who want to be different and stand out from the crowd often cluster in here, giving looks of quiet approval and -- more often -- relief after seeing those earthy shelves and raw wood displays. It's perilous ground to tread, between authentic and kitsch, a stereotype and the real deal. Rail and Anchor is very much the real deal as a unique gift shop catering to unusual finds. Some of these brands are beloved for quirky and unusual gifts, like Kirkegaard and Fred for kitchen goods, drink decorations, and tongue-in-cheek mustache references. Brooklyn Brewing's popular DIY beer, cider, and whiskey kits are hot sellers. I lament missing out on their gin. Other lines are unique to Michigan or less known, but no less delightful for their choices. The maritime spirit is evident, but not crushing, which I appreciate even as a girl from the West Coast who lived half her childhood on commuter ferry boats. You won't trip over a pile of rope, but mermaid book ends do squash some cloth-bound volumes, and the sailing ship decorated plates are definitely a popular item. There is a buoy in the front window, spangled in necklaces and cacti and other seasonally interesting objects. The cloth and weatherproof nylon sailing ship mobiles meant to hang out your back door are admittedly gorgeous and nautical, but plenty of lovely other secrets tucked away. Give yourself time for the housewares section in particular. The tables and shelves hold far more items than meet the eye, and only a few choices for each one. Poke through the flotsam and salt-and-pepper-shaker jetsam, like you would comb the beach for pretty stones. Maybe "Das Kapital" piggybank was something you could never live without or you need a solar-powered Einstein bobble head in your life. Stranger things have happened. Rail & Anchor comes up with so many funky finds, you deserve to spend a good hour perusing. And that's what this shop rewards, the slow and casual regard at all levels. Don't settle for everything at eye level, squat down and get a look at the fish dish. Men's grooming supplies naturally are going to be found in a place like this. Hello, hipster pirates. How else will they maintain a glorious curtain of whiskers? The soaps and razors are fairly priced, and I wouldn't mind some expansion since my beau, who currently sports an epic Bavarian mustache, really quite likes the waxes and shaving soaps, but could use a few more scents. Sandalwood and bay rum resin anyone? Beyond are more lotions and potions for the ladies and the household, while the man-creams are in a particularly nice variety of scents that lean woodsy, spicy, and plain manly. Tobacco and citron beats apple cinnamon Glade fresheners any day. What you won't find are many garments, and accessories are limited largely to a pretty selection of natural jewelry, like wire-wrapped semi-precious stones or wooden discs threaded on bracelets that don't look out of place in the Rust Belt Market stalls. Hipster clothes would be overkill given how which they stock in the shop, so be glad for more space for miniature cacti and some really marvelous plant pots, by season. Tea is another staple that might be unexpected. Free samples are often served up. Not to your tastes? Go help yourself to a DIY cheese-making kit and let your foodie aspirations sail free towards the nearest horizon. I give special props to the kid's section. Lots of old-timey favourites are here. So if you want to inflict a new game on your kids or go encourage those lazy layabouts in your family to get some fresh air and learn self-sufficiency in the backyard while assailed by cheeky coyotes, this is the place to do it. Solid wood toys abound. Harmonicas? Check. Other delightful noisemakers? Check. Lots of 'how to be crafty' books and some with an outright dirty edge for the big kids make great stocking stuffers under the right circumstances. In short, this is my go to shop for most of my family, many friends, and anyone from the West Coast, Denver, or a combination of the three. Go in. Finally, a masculine gift shop! A great space with plenty of unique and cool offerings. The merchandise available is of a high quality, is affordable and is definitely uncommon. I could easily find a gift for a buddy that is sophisticated and classy, or if their personality calls for it, cynical and funny. There is a very wide selection to please both genders, and the staff is unbelievably helpful. Don't hesitate to stop by and look around. I dare you to try to walk out empty-handed. First time coming to this place and I was impressed on all the unique things they had. My sister got herself a bottle opener that looked like a Mexican wrestler.
