What to do with your kids clothes and toys that they do not need anymore is a real life problem as a mom. The concept of Once Upon a Child is brilliant but there are a lot of cons to it as well. Kind of got to curb your enthusiasm with this place. If you are selling - you are only allowed to bring in so many bins/laundry baskets full of your things. Garbage bags are not allowed. Lately this store has allowed 2 bins to try to sell. Each store is different with how they will take clothes that you want to sell. My favorite is carrying a 20 gallon storage bin and barely being able to open the door - all your pride is out of the window trying to open that door along with your bins. Staff barely acknowledge your presence. There is a kiosk that you have to enter your driver's license in the back of it and this inputs your information. It lets you know how long the wait will be. Depending on the day, I have waited an hour but other times it has been hours and hours, might as well come back the next day. The staff will then hand you your receipt and tag your bin. I try to stick around to shop so then I can use the 15% off coupon they give you when they buy your items. The store is packed - shoes, clothes, books, seasonal items, and toys in between. Most clothes I see are being sold for $7 or less - mostly $5-4 is usually the items I have bought. The clothes are clean and I feel for fast fashion, cheaper to buy here then on Amazon. I asked to see what clothes they took out of curiosity and the staff was adamant that I had to keep the clothes in order of how they were laid in their bin. This store seems to like sports gear like a Lions or Tigers shirt and name brands. The most they have taken from me was 23 items, last time I went they took 16 items but I had my 20 gallon storage bin that was full. You can ask for either store credit or cash. I usually try to buy things while I am there to just make it a wash and use the 15% coupon with my transaction. One staff member was amazing in my many times coming here - otherwise, no customer service and staff seem miserable working there. But as a mom - not left with many choices. There are consignment stores in the area but I don't have time for that. I usually donate my clothes to the Grace Center of Hope - Women and Children's Center. Good luck, moms! read more

The store itself is quite cute and has lots of nice clothes & shoes. But the staff is absolutely horrible. The lack of professionalism is BAFFLING. I have overheard staff bad mouthing customers on several occasions. They scoff and roll their eyes when you ask questions because apparently it interrupts their time to socialize with one another. If you're hoping to bring in items to trade in- best of luck- they speak to you as if you're stupid and will take their sweet time sorting through your items. do not recommend shopping at this establishment. read more

Had seen their videos on social media and was influenced (haha). Decided to check them out for both selling and buying. I we r to the Troy location. Selling: staff aren't super helpful in explaining the process. You have to sign in with your email and state ID/license. They give you and estimated time of when your items might be reviewed (my estimate was about 2 hrs). Your options are to shop while you wait or return within 24hours to accept their offer or collect your items. I took in at least 5 new items and some gently used separates and my quote was just under $20. You can elect cash or store credit (for that specific store). Might be worth the time if you have a lot of items. Buying: This store has plenty of options, possibly too many. It's quite overwhelming how much stuff is crammed into this little space. Clothing was really not the best, most I saw had pilling and was misshapen. Prices were pretty reasonable, though you might find better deals on sale/clearance at other retailers. Definitely had better quality baby gear - like new bumbo, activity centers and bassinets. Though I ultimately didn't purchase anything, I might consider checking them out again should I need a backup/second baby gear item. Overall would say it's a pretty decent child specific thrift store. I've heard better reviews for the Novi location. read more

We are having family come in to spend Christmas and New Year's with us. They live halfway around the world near the equator. I realized I would have to buy some warm jackets, snow pants, and boots for the little ones. After checking several resale shops with no luck , I remembered that a friend recommended Once Upon a Child. The store is very well stocked! I was a little overwhelmed by all the merchandise, and didn't know exactly where to look for the clothes that I need. I asked Ann for help. Her attitude was very pleasant. I've been to this location twice, and won't be returning. Long story short I had a toy with my items in my basket. I ended up taking all my things back since they offered me a ridiculously low amount so I would rather donate them, and they were GENTLY used. Yesterday I was getting my things together to donate and the toy I brought them I left the batteries in so they could see it was in working condition. I decided to take the batteries out before donating since they were still new, hardly used and it took larger batteries. It was then I discovered Once Upon a Child took the batteries out of my toy! Every time I have walked into this location, they don't even say hello. I have found items with their tjmaxx tag still on for cheaper that they somehow decide its okay to charge more for than the original retailer. Clothes with stains marked for $12. Today, I decided to give the resale process a try and was very disappointed. I walked into the store and Georgia was at the counter saw my boyfriend with a box for a bassinet asked if we were trying to sell it he said we wanted to see what you offered and she pointed to the walkway and said put it together once it was fully put together Georgia told Ashley we had a bassinet to try to sell then Ashley asked if I checked in which I didn't know I had to being that this was my first time trying to sell to them and noone bothered to try to explain it to me. I then walked over and checked myself in, and relatively quickly, Ashley came over, took one look at the item, and offered me $30 for a $220 when new item that was still in the foam in the box. I questioned this because I had read on their web page that they offer roughly 30-50% of what they could sell it for and I interpreted it as they would give us 30-50% of what it was worth and she was just very rude about it. I asked if for future reference, they could give a rough estimate on what they could potentially purchase something for so I know if it's worth my time to put it togethersince she said they go based off the lowest amount they could get for an item and offer you between 30-50% of that values and she said no. They really should have explained the process to me instead of walking around talking to each other while doing inventory instead of paying attention to customers. While my boyfriend was putting the bassinet together on the floor and I was checking in Georgia asked Ashley if the customer that just ran themselves up after waiting and left could do that and Ashley just shugged her shoulders. The floors were so dirty I was trying not to let anything touch them but had to wipe dirt off the bassinet as I was putting it back into the box because of the few parts that had to touch it while we were putting it together. They really need a table that parents can set up boxed items on. I should not have to fully take everything out of the box when I get home to re-clean everything to list online just because i opened it in their store. They offer you a 15% discount that has to be used the same day just for checking in to try to sell to them, so if you have the time and want to get a discount that is an option. When asking for their names because Noone bothered to even introduce themselves so I could do a review and Georgia's response was well I haven't said a word and I said well that's kinda the problem there needs to be better customer service. I went to this location for the first time. I wasn't too pleased with service as no one greeted me upon entrance, workers talked amongst themselves and could not assist me. The store itself was very clean and organized, however, their selection was not "gently" used. I was surprised at how picky they were considering that most of the store was more than gently used. They don't refold the clothes they don't want and get upset if you watch them go through the clothes stating "we can't have you stand here because of the door". Then the prices in the store are high. I came to once upon a child for the first time today to find some bigger clothes for my one year-old. I expected to find thrift store prices but really had to dig in order to find items that I thought were worth asking prices. (Most items I got were around $4). I'm still confused about how this business is open. USED baby pants and shirts for $5.50? I spent so much time physically digging through the racks as it seems some lower priced items were wedged in. I feel the separates should be $3 max. How is the store moving any merchandise when you can find clothes bundles on FB marketplace or garage sales for way cheaper. Not to mention buying brand new clothes on clearance at the end of season to save for the next size up. I'm happy with what I did find but completely baffled at their prices! Recently purchased a booster seat type highchair upon getting the item home and trying to use it for the first time, four days later, as I only babysit one day a week, I noticed that the latch on the chair was broken. If I would have put my nephew in it he would have fallen out possibly. I went to return the item at my first available opportunity as I work full time. As soon as I walked in and mentioned I wanted to return an item, the employee at the counter immediately just picked up the phone and dialed a manager. At that time I did notice the 7 day return policy & I of course was in on the 10th day. However since the, booster seat that they sold me was faulty and did not work, I thought an exception would be made or an apology for selling a booster seat with a faulty latch. I explained this to the employee at the counter however, they declined my return. The business sold me a faulty booster seat, and would not return the item for me . Upon more discussion, the employee offered me store credit for the price of the booster chair as I looked through the store for a replacement booster seat. I picked one out that had a detachable tray. When I was checking the booster chair out in the store I tried to put the tray on & off & noticed that the tray they were selling with the booster seat was not the correct tray for that booster seat, the store is putting out faulty items and items that are mismatched beware. read more

So I call there after reading the previous reviews, "is there anything you're not taking? Sizes? Do they have to be in sets?" The girl who answered was very nice, says "we're not taking 6-9 months because we're overstocked". Ok cool, I say, I have 12 months. She says nothing about only accepting clothes in plastic tubs. I drive 23 minutes to get there (I love gps accuracy), with my daughter in the car. I go in and the chick (not the one that answered the phone, different voice) we only take clothes in 20 gallon tubs. WHAT?!? I used to buy things here for my son and do so every once in a while. I used to be able to find things for my son all the time. Now the selection is really low. Trying to find things for my daughter is impossible. I used to spend around $80-$100 here almost every trip and get huge bags full of clothes. The other day I bought 8 items for $40. The prices are too high now. The ownership changed and the new owners or the staff (not sure which) are not nearly as friendly. Also, they don't communicate very well. I tried to sell some things for the first time and the lady hardly takes to me. She wasn't kind at all. Then I came back to get my items and was told the clothes were not stained (I threw the stained ones away) I was told they were and the lighting is much better so they can see it now. I've been here a few times, it's resale so yes, you will need some time to spare to look through everything to determine the style & quality you're looking for. Sometimes you get lucky and other times you don't! But, today I went in and found so many great items--tags still on, brand new items in perfect condition and I walked out of there very happy! I also got five free body suits with their New Mom's sign up, they told me every month it's a new thing for free which sounds great to me! Resale is great, you just need some time to sort through the items to find what you're looking for. I found the prices reasonable, and I enjoyed looking through the bins at their always "10 for 10 deal" for baby leggings and body suits. I'll be back soon to look at more items :) I highly recommend for anyone looking for baby and children's clothing, I left very happy! read more

This is my first stop after I clean out the kids' closets. I can usually get $15 - $20 for a big rubbermaid tub (with only about half sold), and I tend to turn around and get a few things we need with the money. They're very understanding and patient with the kids in the play area while parents shop, which is a lifesaver! The staff are definitely not there to babysit, but they do tend to know which one is my kid and confirm he's still good if I ask ;) Buying is hit or miss, but my eight-year-old daughter can usually find something she likes, and I can usually find what I need for my son. read more

Update to my once positive review. Brought clothes in recently, like I have many times in past, was greeted with an attitude , was also given an attitude and told only one bin allowed at a time now then scolded that the clothes I brought in needed to be complete outfits... when I asked if the "rules " had changed the girl said yes we have new owners. It's a shame. This store used to be so friendly and helpful. Also I purchased a couple items while there, pajamas were worn out and more expensive than they used to be. I came in with a ton of clean gently used clothes. They turned away most of my items. I asked the lady why she didn't take most of them and she said they had stains. My daughter only wore most of these clothes once and I personally looked through them last night to ensure they were good. She then told me they aren't taking a lot of clothes but they took most of the dresses. This is my last time coming to this location. The customer service was poor and they lied about the state of these clothes that had zero stains on them. I will never return. read more

Love this place! If you haven't been there recently (since February/March 2011), go check it out because it is under new ownership and it is remodeled! Looks much more organized and clean now. I hesitated to give five starts only because when I was there last month, it seemed inventory was a little low. (Still, lots of clothes in newborn up to big kid sizes.) But then again, it just changed ownership so maybe that has something to do with it. The first time I was there, I scored a huge bag of fall/winter clothes for my 6 year-old plus a Baby Alive doll set for about $60. We're talking at least four bottoms, five tops, and two sweatshirts. The second time I was there, I got two baby sleep sacks (one new-with-tags) and two baby nightgowns for about $10. The third time I was there, I got new-with-tags snow pants, new-with-tags tshirt, 2 pairs of shorts (all for my 6 year old) and a baby Fisher Price cradle swing...all for $70. The swing was $55. Yes, I could have got one at a garage sale or Craigs List for a bit cheaper, but with way more hassle. When my kids need anything, I will always try to check here first. I hope the new owner can keep her inventory up, because I love to buy second-hand stuff in good/excellent condition. It's economical and very earth-friendly. And one more note, the new owner gives a punchcard for frequent buyers...you get some amount off after spending $100 (or something to that effect). Just ask for the details. Fabulous resale shop. Really clean and organized and I get the sense that the clothes are clean too! Most are just slightly used and many still have the tags on them. When I shopped here for my little girl, most outfits were in the $4-$5 range. There's also a great selection of toys and baby items. I saw lots of bouncers/jumperoos/activity centers that are currently at the stores (and cost an arm and a leg) for a decent price. I tried to talk some prices down, but they don't budge, so don't try like I did :) When I visited, I got a Hokey Pokey Elmo for $4.50 and some cute clothes for summer. I LOVED to buy there when my girls were infants, the prices are good for some items, the store is clean and neat and the staff is helpful.However BEWARE if you plan on selling there you will get paid pennies for your gently used items. I had several items that were high end brand items and I was offered 1 dollar for, everything else in GREAT condition barley worn I was given less then a dollar for.If you never sell, but always buy you will have a great experience especially on their Dollar Days. But prepare yourself when it comes to selling, you will get ripped off. (For example I had a 40 gallon bin of Baby gap, Gymboree, Carters,Osh Kosh,Janie and Jack etc etc and I was offered 23 dollars for what was in the bin, that's it!) Also the store needs to do a better job at pricing the items. I found several items that were priced MORE used then you could get at the local store. It's a great store if your looking for the typical run of the mill items for babies. However if your child is older then 2, the selections are very slim. read more

I used to love this place. Such a great place to score inexpensive decent used clothes for kids. This is not the case anymore. They are over charging for a lot of clothing. You can buy the same thing on Amazon or Costco BRAND NEW for cheaper. A snozu snowsuit was $45! They charge $30-$30 for that at costco. Disappointed. Not sure it is worth the hassle for $20 in buy back to not get much in return because the prices have gone up there. read more

DON'T try to sell here!took in children clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, French designer Jacadi, and Petite Bateu, Mini Boden, Hanna Anderson ... Jacadi blouse put in their 'computer system' as' low end TANK TOP', they offered $0.64 cents for it! Brand new dresses from Ralph Lauren, Jacadi, I was offered ..88 cents. Patient leather Italian Boots $1.78! ( computer stated 'low end')from cool boutique in Kerry Town Ann Arbor. All clothing put in as 'low end', french designer dresses that cost about $200 new, worn once, or not at all THEY OFFERED ME .88 CENTS! These clothes were bought at boutiques, and very high end department stores. My daughter is 12, and most of the clothes I brought in were ages 6-11. Clerk stated they were a decade old!!!! If you just what to dump clothes off, and get scamed, and treated like dirt. This is the place for you. Don't sell here, unless you want bottle return prices for your things that will do better at other stores. (Much better!) I called owner, extremely unprofessional, and she wouldn't let me speak, but lectured me. Said her employee called her. Said her computer enters names like Jacadi as low end.(.88 cents pay out). I made the mistake of telling her I was going to write up a review. Then strangely enough, another customer writes in about me the same day I talked with the owner??? says place is 5 stars.
