The first time I came I honestly would have given it a 4 stars... not because it wasn't good but because I wasn't the big fan of my roll, the price point, & the hosts weird push to get us to sit at the bar (despite the restaurant being pretty empty). HOWEVER!!! My second visit, I was truly swayed into a 5 stars!! The server was very kind, the hostess was kind! I got the king Ora roll by suggestion of the waiter and I was so glad I did. Such high quality fish, such good flavor!! The bango roll is a pass unless you want something super light and salad like... popcorn lobster roll was pretty standard. First time here and I really enjoyed the place, really wanted some good salmon sushi and I got the king salmon sushi roll with some veggie Gyoza, and I had a mocktail called fatal fantasies which was really good. Much better than the sushi place that used to be here. Everything we ate was delicious- definitely up there with Bash for good sushi places in Detroit. We had a somewhat odd experience, as the first 3 (!) bottles of wine we attempted to order were out without our waitress being made aware. The food quality and taste was ok. We ordered a couple of rolls and sashimi app. The issues was operations. Our main course, the rolls, came out before our drinks or a sashimi app. Maybe 5-10 minutes before. It was weird and ruined the experience. When our drinks finally came, the app came right after. If we ordered hot meals I would have been mad because our food would have gotten cold as I enjoyed my cocktail. Lastly, the wait staff was not very attentive. It probably has to do with the mandatory 20% gratuity on all dine-in. It makes the wait staff try less hard to impress. My friends and I decided to try this place for their happy hour. The restaurant is nicely size with plenty of tables and a large bar area. We were kindly greeted and set right away for their happy hour. We decided to do the California roll and the firecracker roll both with very, very good. Our waiter even mentioned that they have five dollar mystery shots and we decided to give it a try. 10/10. I think this restaurant is relatively new, and I hadn't heard much about it before coming in, but it was SO good. Their menu is decently sized, having small plate options, entrees, a full sushi menu, and a large drink selection. We ordered so much food because it all sounded so good, and we were not disappointed. I started with the sparkling summer spritz mocktail which was super refreshing. Then we got some smaller plates, the tofu katsu (delicious and saucy), and the okonomiyaki (amazing and so many textures). I also got the salmon nigiri which was so tender, and the matsu roll. Soraya has a contemporary industrial vibe with high ceilings. They have sparkling sake, which I appreciated because you can't find it in many places. I had the unagi and tuna nigiri. It was delicious and fresh. I had the flaming ahi roll as an entree. It is literally served flaming, which was entertaining. The roll is a bit spicy but the eel sauce complements it. It was a pretty large serving as well. The service was very good. Our waiter was attentive and helpful. I would definitely come back to Soraya for dinner. read more

I wanted to give place a try, since the previous one had excellent sushi in taste and presentation . I came at Happy Hour around 4:00 pm. My duster and zi sat at the bar. In speaking to the bartender he stated that the had a different style and this restraint was previous in a hotel near the post office downtown. The drinks were fine, they have a mystery drink on the menu, which did not impress me in taste. I have a picture of the sushi and the crab fried. It is a nice a little place to start, but they could improve on having some sounds, maybe a DJ or some kind of music, I can't remember if I heard anything. I was pretty heartbroken when I heard that the previous restaurant, Maru, closed down, so I walked into Soraya Detroit with a bit of skepticism... but honestly, they won me over fast. My friend and I ordered the House Salad, Flaming Ahi Roll, FireCracker Roll, Sunset Roll, and Strawberry Matcha Cheesecake. The House Salad was perfectly dressed and full of flavor. My friend wasn't a fan of her Firecracker Roll (too much imitation crab for our taste), and they were kind enough to swap it out for a different roll. She then opted for the Sunset Roll and was much happier. The Strawberry Matcha Cheesecake was incredible and the perfect end to our meal -- earthy matcha, delicate sweetness, and a super creamy texture. While I still miss Maru, Soraya's definitely creating something new and special. Will be back again! read more

I was visiting Detroit and decided to check out this well reviewed sushi place. I'll preface this review with the fact that I am from San Diego California. I found this place on Yelp and thought for a moment, "eh I don't know. Sushi in Detroit? Probably not a good idea." But after reading these raving reviews, I ignored my gut instinct and went for it. The establishment itself is in a lovely building and is designed beautifully. The only redeeming qualities I can say about this place are the atmosphere and the cocktail. James made me a tarot card cocktail which was a unique and fun experience. Draw 3 cards and that determines what drink you'll have. It was really good! The food though....barf! I have had better sushi at the grocery store. I've never eaten gas station sushi but I imagine it would taste like this. These prices are absolutely OUTRAGEOUS. I even had gyoza because I couldn't stomach the terrible quality sushi and was disappointed to receive soggy, undercooked dumplings with zero flavor. It tasted like they came out of a bag from the freezer and microwaved. I sat at the bar to dine so James was also my server. I asked several questions about the menu items and he had to go to the back to ask the chef because he didn't know. Meanwhile he's training a new employee right in front of me. How are you equipped to train a new employee when you don't even know your menu? I was also given the wrong answers as to what some items were. I checked Google to clarify. It was just so unprofessional. Bottom line, the food is NOT fresh. I got sick after leaving here. Come for the drinks. But do not dine here. Midwest people don't know good sushi. Came here to eat with co-workers. We have a trade show at Huntington. We were told we had to make a reservation. Our reservation wasn't until 7:15 at 6:00 when we made it. We decided to head over early. Got there at 6:45. Place was not full, mostly empty. And they sat us. So, not sure why the delay but we probably could have headed over earlier. I personally not a fan of eating after 7p when I got to get up early the next day. Anyway it is what it is. Menu is simple and plain forward. I got the appetizer of the cold noddle salad and the spicy tuna roll. It was decent. Lots of garlic in the noodles, not a fan. It was good though. The tuna roll was good. Everyone else seemed to like their choice. Prices are what you'd expect. And the decor is cool. High ceilings and artsy. Bathrooms in lobby of building so you have to step out. 1 stall no paper towels left. Annoying. I guess my score reflects the mid-ness of the place. Service was ok. Food ok. This was my first time here as this place used to be Mari sushi. We started off with edamame and some oysters, the oysters were absolutely delicious with a pineapple mignonette. The edamame was fresh and they added some spicy seasoning on it which tasted good but I wish there was more of a sauce. The chicken katsu was heavenly ! 10/10 recommend especially the katsu sauce. I was turned off by the fact that there was no rice that comes with it and I had to pay $4 for a side of steamed rice. Also I was not a fan of the cabbage slaw as there were red onions it in and I feel that it overpowered the slaw. The flaming ahi roll was a unique presentation and tasted sooo good! Also 10/10. I got a mezcal drink that was part of a pop they were doing with another restaurant and I really enjoyed the subtle spiciness and sweetness. Yum-o!! I really enjoyed my food here over the weekend. We had the following (see menu attachment for the prices and descriptions): Edamame: Had a wonderful citrus bent to it with a kick of spice. Ponzu Sweet Potato: I really enjoyed this and found it nicely filling. I'd love to have this again. Okonomiyaki (savory octopus pancake): This was my favorite of the flavors, and I will be having this again. Definitely a "craveable" item!! Yellowtail and Tuna Sashimi appetizers: These dishes had generous bites of delicious tasting fish. I was quite satisfied with our choices here. We also got a bottle of "Les Allies Blanc de Blanc" it was $35, and I found it a very worthwhile purchase. We were lucky to have the round booth that used to be part of the bank vault while we were there. I really enjoyed the privacy despite it being a bit drafty. My partner and i ordered take out last night from Soraya and i sure wish we picked elsewhere to order dinner from. We spent $85 for mediocre sushi. This was the worst sushi i have ever had. We also ordered the chicken gyoza and the chicken katsu. The chicken gyoza was just okay and the chicken katsu was inedible, the chicken was ice cold even though we picked up on time and we live a 2 minute walk from the establishment and the breading had completely separated from the chicken. $85 for what we received was outrageous. read more

Truly outstanding Japanese restaurant with very cool interior decor complete with an awesome bar, tall windows and stylish seats as well as furniture. Tried the newly opened Soraya last night! We made reservations for a Thursday evening but there were lots of available tables. The interior is still pretty similar to the former Maru and the space is beautiful. We started off with the gyozas which we enjoyed. We then decided to split the flaming ahi roll, branzino karaage, and niku udon. The sushi came out first with beautiful presentation and tasted so good! We really loved this one. Next was the branzino which I thought was just okay. The udon came a while later and tasted very good, but by the time it arrived I was already quite full. I probably would have enjoyed more of this if it came out with the branzino. For dessert, we enjoyed the amazing matcha tiramisu! This was not too sweet and very well flavored, and we were told made by a very talented in house pastry chef. Probably my favorite part of the evening was our lovely server, Juju! She was so kind and friendly and we loved chatting with her, and really enjoyed her recommendations! I hope to see her again next time! read more

I started here for dinner and the next day came back for lunch with colleagues. The vibe is great. The service was excellent for dinner. Bartender was great too. For lunch they appeared understaffed and it was very slow. Food is great. I felt the sushi was a bit over priced, but still, excellent quality. Would make a great date spot. Highly recommend you check out their specials. I had a Korean take on a Manhattan that while sweeter than I prefer was amazing. Parking could be an issue in a really busy night. With the cost of parking, the cost of the entrees and the cost of drinks, I can't give it 5 stars. It was just dang expensive for what it is. I am SO GLAD they're open for lunch - I missed my downtown sushi! Soraya is definitely an improvement on Maru - much better service, same chic, modern atmosphere, delicious fresh food. I came in by myself after the lunch rush - around 1:30pm - and was greeted warmly, seated immediately, and given water as soon as I sat down. The sushi menu is a little bit limited, but they did have a couple of very interesting sounding veggie rolls aside from the basic shrimp tempura, California rolls and salmon/tuna. I look forward to returning for those. This day, I had the shrimp tempura roll, which was perfect. I also had the lions mane katsu which I LOVED. It is a perfect vegetarian dish - lovely juicy almost fatty mushroom texture on the inside and super crispy on the outside. Served super hot right out of the fryer with fresh tangy slaw and perfectly cooked rice. Yum. I will be here often. read more

Location: on the ground level of an office building downtown. Street parking is "available" in the area but its downtown, so parking in a nearby lot is most recommendable. I believe they provide validation for a nearby lot. The restaurant is decorated quite nicely with bar and booth seating, and has great natural light. Service: We had kind of a mixed experience with the service. So definitely some room for improvement/polishing up in this area. Food: We came in around 3pm so we dined off the dinner menu. We ordered shishito peppers, a couple sushi rolls and pork katsu. We both agreed the best dish was the shishito peppers. Though the other dishes weren't bad, they kind of fell a little flat for us. We were seated immediately & served water. We ordered a mocktails & a sapporo, which were brought out quickly. The mocktail was very tasty, and I'm glad they have a few mocktail options. We ordered gyoza as an appetizer - they were packed with filling and absolutely delicious. We each got a roll- my husband ordered spicy tuna & i ordered the Ruby Roll. Took our order and we didn't see him again except to drop food off. Got edamame which was fine. Hard to mess up. Takoyaki was also just ok. Two of us got renji ramen. $25 for 4 tiny bits of dry pork, two stalks of broccoli, a single serving of noodles, and enough salt to kill a toddler. Disgustingly salty. Do not get unless you can stomach drinking soy sauce. Other two at our table order sushi. It took almost an hour to come out. The rest of us had finished our food before they got theirs. I went here on a double date with some friends who had a chance to try out Black Ginger before the move, so we were excited to give Soraya a try. It's in the location where Maru Sushi used to be (heart of downtown so leave a little time to find parking). We ordered a lot of dishes, the standouts were definitely the Okonomiyaki and the niku udon. I loved the flavor of the udon and the noodles were perfect. The sashimi was good, but I think I just like specialty sushi rolls in general and the branzino karaage was decent, but not my favorite. Our server, Sean, was an absolute gem and his service was exceptional. He checked on us often and was very attentive. We ended up ordering a dessert that was sold out, but he went the extra mile by getting us the matcha tiramisu on the house to make up for the dessert being sold out. Soraya was a great experience. The staff were friendly and the ambiance was relaxing. Our waiter answered all our questions and tentative. The spider roll and salmon on the beach roll were delicious and worth the price. At first I thought the rolls were a bit pricey, but they were decent sized and delicious. The crab korokke appetizer was really good too! The right amount of creamy and crunchiness. The Chicken Katsu comes with an amazing sauce, but i can't bring myself to add it to the dish because just the chicken Katsu on the bed of cabbage unadulterated is so sublime, i don't want to ruin it Also do not sleep on the octopus pancake (Okonomiyaki) which usually is necessary to go to SFC to have done right. My husband and I visited Soraya for our anniversary and had a great experience! We were seated in a cute little booth for special events, quickly waited upon with a smile, and enjoyed some of the best cocktails and sushi! We were even given a hand drawn and signed card at the end of our date (which we promptly forgot on our table and are super bummed about!). Prices are fair for the quality.
