What!! Was so surprised and impressed by The Goblin! It's casual digs adjacent to the vibrant Mexicantown area, and near Michigan Central Station and Corktown. There's a parking lot behind the restaurant. Moderate amount of table seating, and you can sit at the sushi bar as well. GREAT sushi! Premium menu items that aren't easy to find everywhere. I tried the Crispy Rice Spicy Tuna and the Otoro + Scallion Roll. Wow. The crispy rice base was so crispy and warm, the tuna and toppings yummy. Visited The Goblin in Detroit and was impressed by the quality of the sushi overall. We ordered the Salmon Blossom, Fire Cracker Roll, California Roll, and the Otoro Bowl. The fish was exceptionally fresh with great cuts, clean flavor, and beautifully plated. The Otoro Bowl was a standout - rich, delicate, and definitely a must-try. I wasn't totally sold on the imitation crab that was used in both the Salmon Blossom and Fire Cracker Roll. It felt unnecessary, especially given how high-quality the rest of the ingredients were. Still, they were tasty overall. Service was a bit slower than expected, but nothing worth docking points over. The staff was polite and the vibe was relaxed. I'd definitely come back, but next time I'll probably stick to the more traditional offerings like hand rolls, sashimi, and nigiri, because that's clearly where this spot shines. read more

Little gem in southwest Detroit. Usually, I go to southwest for Mexican food but the place pop up and had to give it a try late at night. They close at 10pm. They serve Korean and Japanese sushi, everything is freshly made and reasonably price. Very bright and white on the inside, not a typical Japanese restaurant design, more like a Japanese convenient store/ cafe type of setup. Yum! They have a huge menu, and there are so many interesting things on it. Today we ordered the Alaska, Green Goblin veggie, the Winter and the BBQ eel rolls. We also got the steak nigiri (order that!) and miso soup and a house salad. I loved the flavor of all of the rolls and the fish and veggies were very fresh. Perfectly cooked sushi rice; not mushy. My favorite thing was the steak nigiri - I ordered it because I can't say I've seen anything like that on other menus, and it was absolutely delicious. Very tender. I was excited to try this place based upon the reviews. It was ok but my experience wasn't what I was expected after reading all of the high praise. I stopped by on a weekday evening and they weren't terribly busy. It took a while for the staff to notice me waiting, when they did I was invited to sit wherever I liked. The server was cordial but not very attentive. My miso soup had virtually no tofu in it. The flavor was good but it definitely needed to have tofu added. Then my maki rolls arrived. They were sloppily placed on the serving board and the rolls were not evenly cut. Some pieces had huge chunks of fish while others had almost none. I think I'll look for other sushi options upon my next return to the area. read more

I have only ever gotten takeout five or so times, so can't really comment on the service but will say my order is always promptly prepared, the inside is really cute, and the staff seems friendly. The sushi is just okay. The texture is consistently off, almost chewy. I think it's the nori. Today I had a salmon roll and shrimp tempura, and the flavor of the shrimp tempura was so off. The Goblin is unexpectedly intimate and modern for a sushi spot! It's small with a very few amount of tables, we got the sense that most people come here to pick up food and witnessed as much during the time we were sitting here and saw so many come through picking up their orders. There's probably only 4-5 tables in this area where you can actually sit down and eat. The decor is bright, minimalistic, cute, and modern, so even if you come here for dinner, you feel like it's the middle of the day. They have music videos playing on one wall for additional ambiance and very casual menus as well for you to peruse. My friends and I ended up all getting some rolls and they were all delicious! The quality of the ingredients is good and you can tell things here are fresh, which is especially important given how much of the menu is raw. I highly recommend The Goblin for all your sushi cravings! I probably wouldn't dine-in here again given how casual it is (we dined in because we had time to kill before heading to the adjoining bar in the same building during the holidays to meet up with other friends of ours), but rather come here often to pick up sushi to take home to enjoy! Fortunately we were early and although this is not a huge restaurant we were able to get a table. They were hopping with take out orders for sure! The nigiri was fresh as was the tuna. For NYE we decided to do a bunch of grazing options at home and I had seen The Goblin platters here on Yelp and on IG and decided that we had to have one as part of our spread. I placed an order through their website (super easy!) and IDed the time we wanted based on some other errands we had to run in town. When we arrived we pulled up to the side of the building and as soon as it was ready they ran it right out to us in the car. I didn't have to call or do anything since they had the make and model of our car in the order. We got the panda platter and it was a generous spread of several rolls including a spicy tuna, salmon, cucumber, crab, and more. We got a few different dipping sauces like soy and spicy mayo and we had a great feast! The fish was fresh and delicious and the portion size was more than generous given the price point. This particular location has had a thousand lives, often showcasing a trendy food spot that flames out as fast as it's meteoric rise. I hope this isn't the case with The Goblin as it has been a craveable bit of sushi heaven since it's first location opened in Clinton Township. I've loved every roll I've gotten from the Goblin, but I'm mostly in love with their bowls and their nigiri/sashimi selection and quality. The avo/salmon bowl, for only $9, is generously filled to the brim with bright colored and fresh goodies. The torched salmon and scallops are a can't-miss. Even their bbq eel tastes a level up from most sushi places. Have to mention the decor and vibes inside as well, very cool, clean, and quite Instagrammable lol.
