Located in Book Tower - I've been here a couple times for Supreme as well as Kamper's rooftop bar but it was my first time at Hiroki-san! It's located in the basement, but it's gorgeously decorated. Modern yet warm. Big city vibes, Detroit! We ordered a lot of the menu... Of the yakitori section we had the following - they have a legit charcoal grill situation going on on the kitchen for this! You can see it from the dining room as it's an open kitchen! So, do order the yakitori! *TSUKUNE (ground chicken meatball, tare) - if I see tsukene on the menu, I'm ordering! Hiroki-san's version didn't disappoint *CHASHU (pork simmered in sweet soy) - tender, flavorful. no notes! *GINDARA (black cod, saikyo miso) - this was a table favorite! so tender and flaky. Of the cold section, we had the TUNA-CAVIAR (bluefin tuna tartare, dashi jelly, crispy shiso, calvisius caviar). What a stunning dish! I love that the tempura'ed shiso was the vehicle. The tuna tartare was served at the perfect cool temperature. It's a premium dish but delish! Of the hot plates section, we had the: *KARAAGE (japanese fried chicken, su miso mayo) - Karaage is a classic and Hiroki-san makes a great fried chicken dish. *CHAWANMUSHI (soft egg custard, shimeji mushrooms, truffle sauce) - I love a good steamed egg. While the texture was on point and super custardy, the truffle sauce was a bit vinegar-y for me. I will say that it was SUPER flavorful though! *TAKO-AGE (crispy fried octopus, tonkatsu sauce, crunchy chili garlic) - our server recommended this one otherwise I probably wouldn't have ordered it! It's cut in ovals/medallions and lightly breaded/fried almost like a lighter tempura batter and topped with tonkatsu sauce. Ain't no Bulldog tonkatsu sauce I'm used to though - had a bit of chili/heat/sweet? Enjoyed it - definitely a unique dish I'd order again. Of the nigiri/sashimi section, we ordered: *Hotate (scallop) - this is my ABSOLUTE favorite. this was the most interesting cut of it - almost like a square lump but I mean, I ate it and it was fresh but would I get it again? Verdict's out. *O-Toro (fatty tuna belly) - HOWEVER, my friend's o-toro was where it was at. BEAUTIFUL square of marbling...looked luscious and she enjoyed it! Of the maki section, we had the ITACHI (miyazaki a5 wagyu, cucumber, avocado, pickled ginger, pickled jalapeno, fried garlic, caviar). I wanted to love this so much but the balance was completely off. The maki itself leaned very fresh and bright to balance out wagyu which is typically very fatty & rich. HOWEVER, there was too little wagyu so it mostly just tasted...pickle-y. If they gave us thicker cuts, I think it would've been pretty perfect. Of the dessert section, we ordered the entire menu of course! *Pandan Cake (mango jam, coconut rice custard) - this one was so whimsically plated - it's served like a maki! Ha. The chiffon cake was really lovely - nice and soft. *Chocolate Miso Cake (bruleed banana, chocolate crumble, miso, caramel, banana ice cream) - if you like indulgent desserts, this one is for you! the table loved this one. Delish! *Matcha Pavlova (black sesame, hazelnut, mandarin marmalade) - I really well done pavlova! As a black sesame stan, I wanted it to be like a black sesame paste but it was basically just black sesame garnish. The other flavors came out clearly though. I enjoyed their take on a negroni! They also have lots of interesting varieties of hot and chilled sake.

Broccolini - this was delicious, smokey and a salty. It was very black garlicy which is almost reminiscing of a thick balsamic.

Genmaicha  - delicious toasty and floral tea. You get several steepings per visit so it was nice to sip on throughout the meal. Broccolini - this was delicious, smokey and a salty. It was very black garlicy which is almost reminiscing of a thick balsamic.  Wagyu yakotori - the meat was done medium rare. It was unctius and left a coating of fatty smokey oil in your mouth.  The sot cured egg yolk was an extra layer of umami.   Gyuran yakitori - I was surprised that we preferred this to the regular wagon meat.  It was more tender.  The chimichurri was herbaceous and balancing to the meat. Tako age - wow.  Don't sleep on this one.  The lightly battered octopus was easy to bite into and had a mild flavor of the ocean. It was topped with chilli crisp and pickle that balanced the fried nature of the dish.   Shoto - this roll was perfectly crafted.  The thin layer of rice encapsulates the fish like a slightly sweet and salty hug.  The jalapeño provided a nice freshness and heat. It comes with a chunk of pickled ginger and real wasabi. O toro nigiri - this was amazing. A food experience in just a couple bites. The fish is super rich and buttery. We accepted the offer for the waiter to brush the soy sauce on top. Uni Nigiri - first time trying this dish. It was extremely rich and creamy with the taste of the ocean.  The one piece alone was satisfying. Matcha pavlova - the matcha was very mild and most of the flavor came from the yuzu compote. Yummy but if we were to do it again we would probably opt for another savory dish.

Before you read, just know if you go on a weekend it will most likely be very loud and packed. If you have a loud speaking voice and good hearing, it shouldn't be a problem. It's definitely a lively, hustle-and-bustling place. At the same time, it has a dark intimate vibe. Very, very unique seating set up. People will brush past your seat often, and you can see the amazing chefs cooking! I recommend coming here for an interesting dining experience. The menu might not be for picky eaters. It's really not. But for adventurous Japanese food lovers, I'm begging you to try it! I loved the beef tongue There has been one or two dishes I didn't like, but I attribute it to personal taste rather than poor cooking. It's the kind of place where you'll want to get a few things, maybe even share, and just see what works for you and what doesn't. I'd come for the ambiance alone, and although I don't drink, if you do, it's probably a great place to just get a drink even if you're not hungry.

Delicious drinks, food is great, & service is great as well. This upstairs space is a bit smaller, perfect for a bite and a cocktail. Can't wider to come back, thanks for a great time, chris!

We checked out Hiroki-san for a late night dinner on a Friday evening. We were seated promptly upon arrival into a cozy corner table for two. The restaurant is beautiful, the staff were lovely, and the food was delicious. A few things... our server recommended 3 or 4 dishes per person. We started with 4 (total) and that was plenty of food. Any more and we would have been rolling up the stairs. The couple next to us were celebrating a birthday and the staff brought out complementary champagne and dessert - nice touch! You will be in close proximity to your neighbors, so private conversations are difficult.

I sat on this review for a week because I genuinely wasn't sure how I felt about it. Pros: the ambiance was incredible and I loved how they had a gluten free menu ready to go with all of the alterations listed out. It let me see how much was actually being taken out of the dish (as well as which options were already 100% GF), so I felt confident I wasn't picking something that I was fundamentally changing by making it GF. Cons: first, our service was a hair slow. Our server was really nice, but we didn't see her a whole lot. Additionally, the food didn't really knock my socks off. My salmon bowl tasted a little bland, and the table had mixed reports on the sushi and ramen. I think I would return to try the sushi (I'm normally big on sushi, so it was unusual for me to not get it). I just felt like the ambiance and the prices promised more than what we got here, and I was a little bummed!

We went here this past week for a dinner while we were in the area. They had a great menu with options to suit everyone! The waitress was so nice and patient with our group. For a drink, I had an espresso martini and they put thru own flare on it. It was amazing! For dinner, I had two rolls: the avocado roll and the Yuji roll. Both rolls were extremely fresh and tasty. I loved the Yuji roll with the little bit of spice! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Detroit!

Down a flight of stairs in the book tower and you find this beautiful place. It has low lighting and soft music that really sets the vibe. We were able to get a table for two without reservations but I recommend getting one. We had the curry Katsu that had perfect fried chicken. Pork dumplings which were delicious, and avocado rolls 10/10. I had the Chika cocktail, its fruity & light. This is a place I see myself Coming back to visit.

Came to dinner here with a few friends and had an amazing time. The ambience is Japandi with a modern twist and beautiful for a night out. We had a variety of dishes to split but my absolute favorite were the wagyu noodles. The portions are relatively small, so keep that in mind when ordering. Our waitress for the night was attentive and helpful and answered our questions and made suggestions based off our dietary preferences.

Amazing experience at Hiroki San!! My second time coming and it was even better than the first. Our waitress was a huge highlight of our experience and gave amazing recommendations as well as paced out our food perfectly.

Wonderful dining experience! I took myself out on a dinner date and I'm so glad I came here. Juan provided fantastic service and made wonderful recommendations. I really enjoyed the sushi. I ordered two items from the Maki section of the menu: Yuji and Karai-Hako. The flavors were perfect. I also appreciated how the ginger on the side of the plate was in cubes instead of shavings like you usually get. The flavor tasted so much better to me. The wasabi is homemade too. I also had O-Toro sashimi and that melted in my mouth. So fabulous. The chocolate miso cake for dessert was incredible! The layers and flavors were perfect together. I loved the dim lighting and beautiful decor. Quiet, intimate atmosphere. Located in the basement of the Book Tower building, from the lobby you can take the stairs down to the entrance. I look forward to coming back and trying more of the menu.

Went here twice, just recently and when their first opened, and I have to say the dishes are still deliciously good. The service was great . Just last Friday I celebrated my birthday with a group of 14, we got our own private room, the service was great, and the food came out quick. This is one of my fave place to eat in Detroit. I can't wait to take my husband here.
