Located in Book Tower - I've been here a couple times for Supreme as well as Kamper's rooftop bar but it was my first time at Hiroki-san! It's located in the basement, but it's gorgeously decorated. Modern yet warm. Big city vibes, Detroit! We ordered a lot of the menu... Of the yakitori section we had the following - they have a legit charcoal grill situation going on on the kitchen for this! You can see it from the dining room as it's an open kitchen! So, do order the yakitori! *TSUKUNE (ground chicken meatball, tare) - if I see tsukene on the menu, I'm ordering! Hiroki-san's version didn't disappoint *CHASHU (pork simmered in sweet soy) - tender, flavorful. no notes! *GINDARA (black cod, saikyo miso) - this was a table favorite! so tender and flaky. Of the cold section, we had the TUNA-CAVIAR (bluefin tuna tartare, dashi jelly, crispy shiso, calvisius caviar). What a stunning dish! I love that the tempura'ed shiso was the vehicle. The tuna tartare was served at the perfect cool temperature. It's a premium dish but delish! Of the hot plates section, we had the: *KARAAGE (japanese fried chicken, su miso mayo) - Karaage is a classic and Hiroki-san makes a great fried chicken dish. *CHAWANMUSHI (soft egg custard, shimeji mushrooms, truffle sauce) - I love a good steamed egg. While the texture was on point and super custardy, the truffle sauce was a bit vinegar-y for me. It's cut in ovals/medallions and lightly breaded/fried almost like a lighter tempura batter and topped with tonkatsu sauce. Came back to hiroki-san for a date night with my husband and we had an enjoyable evening. We were hoping to try the omakase experience but unfortunately it was booked up. The dimly lit interior was spacious yet intimate, and I love the hot towels we started off with! We shared a few items off the menu with some suggestions from our server. The scallop ceviche was definitely one of my favorite items of the evening, as well as the shishito peppers. I wasn't crazy about the sake salmon or negma starters we have - I much preferred the gindara (black cod) I had last time. The gyu-don with Wagyu was cozy and wonderful. Before you read, just know if you go on a weekend it will most likely be very loud and packed. If you have a loud speaking voice and good hearing, it shouldn't be a problem. It's definitely a lively, hustle-and-bustling place. At the same time, it has a dark intimate vibe. Very, very unique seating set up. People will brush past your seat often, and you can see the amazing chefs cooking! I recommend coming here for an interesting dining experience. The menu might not be for picky eaters. It's really not. But for adventurous Japanese food lovers, I'm begging you to try it! I loved the beef tongue There has been one or two dishes I didn't like, but I attribute it to personal taste rather than poor cooking. I sat on this review for a week because I genuinely wasn't sure how I felt about it. Pros: the ambiance was incredible and I loved how they had a gluten free menu ready to go with all of the alterations listed out. It let me see how much was actually being taken out of the dish (as well as which options were already 100% GF), so I felt confident I wasn't picking something that I was fundamentally changing by making it GF. Cons: first, our service was a hair slow. Our server was really nice, but we didn't see her a whole lot. Additionally, the food didn't really knock my socks off. My salmon bowl tasted a little bland, and the table had mixed reports on the sushi and ramen. I think I would return to try the sushi (I'm normally big on sushi, so it was unusual for me to not get it). Wonderful dining experience! I took myself out on a dinner date and I'm so glad I came here. Juan provided fantastic service and made wonderful recommendations. I really enjoyed the sushi. I ordered two items from the Maki section of the menu: Yuji and Karai-Hako. The flavors were perfect. I also appreciated how the ginger on the side of the plate was in cubes instead of shavings like you usually get. The flavor tasted so much better to me. The wasabi is homemade too. I also had O-Toro sashimi and that melted in my mouth. So fabulous. The chocolate miso cake for dessert was incredible! The layers and flavors were perfect together. Being able to dine at this restaurant was a bit of a roller coaster. We came knowing it was an upscale japanese restaurant but knew nothing else about it. When you walk in you have to go down a set of spiral stairs to get to the main part of the restaurant. We had reservations for 5 people and were seated at a booth that was a bit crowded for more than four. There was barely any lighting, our main source was a small tea candle at the table. I did love the table setting that included a mini cinder block chopstick rest. There was a plate of wet towels rolled up sitting in the middle of the table as well. We didn't know what they were for but our server had mentioned the towels at least 5 times without explanation and I had to Google what they were for. Apparently you're supposed to wipe your hands clean as soon as you sit down as a sign of hospitality. It would have been nice if our server clued us in on this as none of us had really formally dined in a restaurant that participated in traditional customs. Once our server saw that all of the wipes were used, he removed them without saying anything. For drinks, we ordered some espresso martinis that were on the sweeter side and I ordered a cup of macha green tea. There was also waters for the table that our server was on top of refills the entire night. We ordered several starter items to try including the chicken thigh and scallop charcoal grilled skewers, spicy edamame, chicken kaarage, octopus takoage, and tuna tartare sushi roll. The wasabi is homemade too which is cool. We enjoyed all of the plates and the pacing was very nice as I wasn't even full yet before ordering a main course. For our entree's we ordered the duck soba, shoyu ramen, wagyu beef hotpot, soboro donburi, the tuna jalapeno Maki roll, and some sashimi. Everything was so beautifully plated and presented. We liked the little seaweed strips provided to wrap around the maki and eat with. The poached egg in the donburi and the sweet soy sauce mixed in was so flavorful. It was a fun meal. We still had room for dessert, so we ordered the miso chocolate cake and the matcha pavlova. Both were good but I liked the cake more as it was paired with ice cream and tasted better with the stickiness of the cake. We were celebrating a birthday and they gave us the cake on the house with a candle in it and we appreciated that. Towards the end of our meal, the sous chef came up and introduced himself and checked on us which was nice. I feel the need to mention that the bathrooms are not gender separate and just a shared bathroom with stalls and communal sink. It is a bit odd and I can see a lot of people having a problem with it. My partner wanted to take me out on a belated birthday, it was our first time here so we didn't know what to expect. Our server did a great job explaining the menu to us. Very interesting options. Our server told us that (some of the) fishes come from Japan every two weeks... But if you're not ordering those items, you're really just paying that extra $$ for the aesthetics at this restaurant. My boyfriend ordered the Nikujaga, it was pretty tiny but cool concept. I ordered the Curry Katsu and it was filling and tasty. We ended up trying two different sushi rolls, good, but nothing memorable. We were tempted to try the skewers but they were priced per skewer and it just seemed like you're paying a good amount to sample an item. We spent over $100 but everything just tasted, Ok. Like I said though, here for the aesthetics. You'll probably end up leaving here hungry for more. I went with my husband to Hiroki-San to celebrate our wedding anniversary and it was the perfect place to celebrate. It is definitely a place to order a handful of small plates and split it. The sushi menu was a little pricey but we ordered some apps and split a rice dish and that was a perfect amount of food. They had really good mocktails as well. We ordered the scallop sashimi, the mushroom hot pot rice, tuna-caviar, octopus, and karrage. The scallop sashimi was really good and tasted fresh and buttery, they also pair it with fresh wasabi. The mushroom hot pot rice was perfect to split between two people after the apps, it was on the saltier side but still very flavorful. The tuna-caviar was really good and the chips it came with were really good and super crispy, it was just some lightly breaded and fried perilla leaves which I've never seen before. The octopus and fried chicken were also delicious and perfectly cooked. They were more on the basic side but still two very good and safe dishes. We did get the pandan cake for dessert and the mango and coconut flavors within complimented each other perfectly. I would eat it over and over again. What a cool spot!! I went for my birthday with a couple of friends and our server, Claire, was kind, lively, and very fun to talk to. Champagne was brought out for us as a surprise and it was wonderful, as were the other cocktails we all got. The sunomono cucumber cold plate was genuinely the best cucumber I've had in my entire life, and the gyoza was perfect. We got the shoto and sal-kani maki and both were excellent. Wagyu - Delish AF, the soy sauce and egg yolk dipping sauce was phenomenal. Definitely a quality over quantity item. 9.5/10. It's that good. Gyutan - The Beef tongue was divine. The flavor was amazing, it seasoned very well and the texture was super tender. 9 out of 10 Tuna Caviar - Great flavor,, the shizo tempura was perfect accompaniment to the Tuna and the fish eggs. 8.8 out of 10. Uni Toro - DIVINE, Tuna with sea urchin is a combo made in heaven. Plus that edible gold garnish brings an elevated look to it. 8.5 out of 10 Uni Nigiri - Urchin is something we usually gravitate to. The fact that these were presented in a manner that's unusual to most is a plus. 9.9 out of 10. Matcha tiramisu - Yuzu is the focal point of the dish. Extremely delicious. This has all trappings of a great Japanese restaurant but was a disappointment. The service was nice, but the menu looked better than it tasted. Six of us tried a large amount of dishes and everything was lackluster. Bland was the general experience we all had. The prices are high, so our expectations were also. This Izakaya-style restaurant was a solid experience. While they offer ramen and udon, we focused on the Izakaya small plates and Maki rolls instead. Tako-Age (Fried Octopus) Crispy on the outside, with the octopus inside falling apart easily. Personally, I prefer a chewier, bouncier texture when it comes to octopus. The sauce drizzled on top added a tart element(or some unnecessary element, been 2 weeks since I went to Hiroki after writing this review), but I didn't think it was necessary and didn't quite enjoy it. Negima (Chicken Yakitori) One of the better dishes of the night. The chicken was tender and juicy, though it was a bit too salty. Still, I'd order this again, perhaps with a request to go lighter on the salt. Shoto (Kanpachi Maki Roll) A solid maki roll with fresh fish and well-balanced ingredients. However, I wasn't a fan of the serrano pepper slices on top -- the added spice felt unnecessary and took away from the overall flavor. I ended up removing them. Hotate (Scallops) Perfectly cooked, but lacking that signature scallop sweetness and brininess -- likely due to being inland and farther from the coast. Still enjoyable, but not outstanding. Shishito Peppers Nicely grilled and topped with garlic flakes, but missing that bold shishito pepper flavor that I like. Some people may like it not as strong. Wagyu Good flavor, but this was a strip loin cut, which made it much chewier than expected. It really needed the salt served on the side to bring out the beef flavor. Gyutan (Beef Tongue) Surprisingly thick-cut, tender, and soft -- quite different from the usual thin and chewy beef tongue preparation. A unique take that I'm unsure if I would get again. I loved sampling different types of dishes, and EVERYTHING was good with interesting, unique, and balanced flavors, textures, temperatures. The standouts for me: - Kanpachi Carpaccio (cold dish). Soo fresh and delicious, with the thinly sliced kanpachi soaking in the yuzu ponzu and ginger scallion oil. Each piece had a little chile on top which added a nice crunch and spicy kick! - Tako-Age (hot dish). So flavorful and the octopus was so tender. Not sure I've ever had octopus that tender before! - Hirata (pork belly) Buns (hot dish). I know you can find pork belly buns at a lot of Asian restaurants but these were unique! Loved the flavor of the pickled veggies in this one and the pork belly slice was fatty and thick. - Hokkaido (maki roll). Unique flavors for a scallop sushi roll! The shiso stood out as well as the lemon aioli and wasabi tobiko on top. Our main waitress, Millie (sp?) was amazing and had great recommendations to share. The hand towel service at the start of the meal was a nice touch. Also loved the view into the kitchen - it was really cool to see the yakitori skewers in action and smelled great. There was low bar seating along the kitchen and a sushi counter which looks like would be a great experience for solo or paired dining too. Amazing amazing ambiance reminiscent of a speakeasy. Service is impeccable. We got the Shinkai cocktail that was delicious with great yuzu flavors. True highlight of the food was the hotate (scallops) which were the highlight of the meal. The tako-age octopus was decent but had too much sauce to the point where it overpowered the natural flavors to some extent. The beef hot pot was very very simple with good flavor but a little atrocious for the price (half a small potato, 3 slices of unseasoned beef, some vermicelli, and shiitake mushrooms). Gyutan was delicious and you couldn't have even told it was beef tongue. Overall I would definitely come back to try drinks and stick to the yakitori menu rather than the other hot plates read more

First, I hate it when I forget to take pictures. But to do so here would have felt demeaning to the experience: tucked away down marble stairs inside a very nice hotel, this has the feel of a hideaway that opens into a cavernously exclusive dining experience (notice the omission of the word 'restaurant' there). So, my Dad and I didn't quite fit in. We came straight from LCA and a Wings victory over Tampa Bay (LGRW!). Rather than casual-classy duds, we were adorned in jerseys bearing the Winged Wheel. Hell, I bought a game-used Simon Edvinsson hockey stick, so that was stashed in the coat closet as we dined. Kind of late on a Saturday night, the hostesses were kind enough to find a spot at the sushi bar. The interior is damned cool: it's warm, yet dim. The staff (I'm distressed that I forgot our server's name: she was encyclopedic in her knowledge of the food; despite being in the weeds, sangfroid and grace; a curly redheaded young lady who was par excellence) elite. The food was (time for cliches!) classic yet innovative. Genuinely: the classic presentation of edamame but with chili oil and (dashi, maybe some bonito?) was a pleasant and refreshing elaboration on a tired staple. Their octopus plate was on par (maybe slightly better than, considering texture and flavor (spicy)) with Selden Standard's offering the night before (aaaannnddd, maybe, better). The first thing that comes to mind when discussing the sushi was, in light of all the sushi I've had back home, fresh. Just damned fresh. Uncomplicated, refined; if the thought was to let the fish be the centerpiece, mission accomplished. Moreover, no cooked rolls: as someone who is pretentious and pedantic (at times?) this is something to be admired. Purist, elitist, call it what you will. It separates them as I consider cooked rolls to cater to a 'lowest-common-denominator' clientele target. So, all considered, the environment+staff+food+feel (they let two guys from Memphis wearing hockey jerseys come in 50 minutes before close and delivered and damned fine experience), Hiroki-san is a unicorn. We were so excited to try this place, and we really wanted to love it, but our overall experience was a bit of a let down. We did love the basement vibe and the decor, but the service was spotty and inconsistent. It took about 10 minutes for a server to come to our table after we were seated, and only after we asked another server where our server was. Once she came, she wasn't much of a help because she didn't know too much about anything on the menu...it was like she was reading the menu for the first time with us. So we just ordered based on other reviews and recommendations. Most of the dishes were just OK; portions were tiny and lacked flavor. Nothing really stood out to us besides the Gyoza and Hirata Buns. Even the drinks were bland and hard to finish. Sushi was disappointing. They ran out of the Japanese cheesecake which I was most excited to try, so we settled on the black sesame pudding which was another letdown. Our server said the dessert was complimentary because of my birthday, but we still got charged for it, and we just wanted to leave so we didn't say anything about it.
