We came in for a treat after some serious Christmas shopping. I had to try the pecan pie which I had to go. The pecan pie was mouthwatering delicious. It is very sweet as it should be, but the perfect amount. We also like the sea salt shortbread and of course the cinnamon rolls. The cashier was very friendly and patient as I made up my mind on what treats I wanted. I even added some cookies as a last min gift to give for the holidays. The bakery is small with a few indoor seats but there's some cute outside seating as well. There is parking on both Kerchaval and Parker. We will be back as we live dangerously close. We were going to be in Detroit for the day, and I looked up what are must have items in the city. One article mentioned the salted maple pie. I love maple, so I knew I wanted to go try! We didn't get there until the afternoon, but they luckily still had some available. We took two slices to go. It wasn't what I expected, especially in texture, kind of like a gummy chess pie. The flavor was okay, nice maple, and not as sweet as I was expecting. Service - we were the only ones there. It took a few minutes to get someone to say hello, and finally get us our slices. But then, we waited for the staff to finish their goodbye conversation, as one person was leaving for the day, until we could check out and pay. Overall, between the pie and service, it was disappointing and not somewhere I'd be recommending as a must have while visiting Detroit. read more

Awesome little bakery with a big heart! I love their unique spin on traditional favorites and honestly have never hated anything I've tried! Some of my favorites are the black cheddar pepper scones for something savory- they freeze wonderfully, too! The honey lemon meringue and the cherry bourbon pies are knockouts. The pie crust is dynamite- it's flaky and buttery and reminds me of a croissant. Their Robert Redford cookies are a perfect balance of sweet and salty! Came in on a Thursday morning and had a slice of the strawberry rhubarb lavender pie. The pie was amazing and the little dollop of whipped cream they offer is a must. However, I didn't feel very welcomed here. The cashier was a bit curt with me and seemed to just want me out as soon as possible. I had never been so I wanted to look around a bit. After I bought the pie, she mumbled something to me and after a few seconds, I realized she was offering me a starter. It was a nice offer. Lisa, Anji and the rest of the staff are absolute gems! Years ago (pre-pandemic) a friend and I attended the All-Butter Pie Dough Class and the experience was just lovely. Back then the class included a light meal of hand pies and salad and then we learned how to make their amazing crust. We got to take home a bag of treats with a rolling pin along with the recipe. We also got to take home the dough we made (which was enough dough to make two pies or one double crust pie). Everything I have tasted here has been just the best possible version of a thing. The bakery has been a huge part of breathing new life into the West Village and my only wish is that they were able to be open later each day so I could pick up a pie to take home after work. read more

Sister Pie is a cute little spot and we stopped by on Saturday morning. They have a couple of savory things but the majority of their stuff is sweet. There is one larger table inside to sit at and a few small tables outside. We got our baked goods and they were all delicious. Sister Pie is an absolute gem in the West Village area. It's 10 minutes away from my abode and the self control it takes to not stop in at least once a week is far too much. Everyone is always very nice and there are options for gluten free friends at all times. Most recently I got the a slice of Maple Pie and vegan Brownie. The Maple Pie was so maplely sweet with a nice bite of delicious crust. The vegan brownie was just okay, it tasted vegan but not in a bad way just in a "I'm not a vegan so I rather be having a cream milky brownie" way. Of course, I checked out the reviews of this place before I came. There was one that recounted lackluster treats. I wholeheartedly disagree. I'm visiting family from Seattle, and while looking for things to do, I noticed that Sister's pie was ranked one of the top pie establishments in Michigan. Of course I had to check it out. Unfortunately (fortunately?), for me, my day of discovery is none other than: pIE DAY!!! I ordered the chocolate pie, the Neapolitan, the salted maple, and the banana cream. Also wanted to check out the "out of this world" brownie, the Robert Redford and the very curious Rosemary shortbread! Let me start by saying that everything was good. The treats that stand out in my mind are, in this order: banana Pete cream pie. Wow. This pie is $&*t-your-pants good. The meringue on top is such a nice touch. Salted maple: no wonder this is their signature pie. Weak in the knees delicious. The balance of sweet and salt is perfection, the texture is silky loveliness. Out-of-this-world brownie: whaaaat?!?! How could this be so good. Light and fudgy with chocolate chips, I have been searching for a brownie, just like this for a very long time. Nearly tempted to go back and buy another. Rosemary shortbread: I really enjoyed the taste of salt, sweet and savory. Crumbly and delicious. Such a curious combination of flavors, I'm almost tempted to go back and buy some to take home with me. My pants beg to differ. Neopolitan: yum. I love that they tackled this flavor combination in this pie. Chocolate pie: this pie was outstanding, and my aunt's favorite! It tasted like a hug of comforting chocolate. So yes. If you're wondering whether you should drive into downtown Detroit, you should absolutely make the trek, despite the construction headaches on 696(?). My wife took her visiting sister to Sister Pie. They brought home a myriad of items, often recommended by others waiting in line. They looked tasty and were obviously an eclectic mix of ingredients and ideas. Unfortunately, none were particularly good. They were also highly expensive. Savory scones were dry and unpalatable- as scones often are. Vegan and gluten free brownies were also flavor free. The touted Salted Maple pie had a consistentcy like pumpkin pie. The crust was ridiculously dry and hard to cut through and the filler got eye-swirling, frowny face reviews from our oldest daughter (who is quite the baker) and myself. My wife and her sister did like the pie. Buckwheat chocolate chip cookies were also a flop. Rosemary shortbread cookies failed to impress. We had some other choices too; they're visible in the pictures. Daughter did like the peanut butter cookie but I think I had given up at that point. I've been dreaming of going to Sister Pie for months, and have finally been able to visit on a Saturday morning! We came here around ten minutes before open, and there was already a line. I do suggest if it's your first time (and there's a line) to not be one of the first people as it's a bit stressful being unable to look around first. We got the cranberry pie, curry hand pie, and peanut butter paprika cookie. They were all so delicious, they even exceeded my already high expectations. The cranberry pie had a beautiful tartness, smooth texture, with a lemon base on the bottom, and the CRUST!!! The hand pie was also flavorful, warm, and filling. The cookie was moist and had a great chew. Overall, can't wait to come back. Sister pie has such a welcoming atmosphere, I hope to have the chance to look more around the shop! This is one of the best bakeries we have ever been to! This review is slightly belated since we stopped by in late September (so I am not sure if anything has changed with ordering), but they run a smooth operation since you are able to order & pay at the door. The staff was very friendly and offered great recommendations! The first time we stopped by, I think we ordered 80% of the menu since we had skipped breakfast, but we had no regrets. We got the kale salad, salted maple pie slice with homemade whipped cream, golden oatie cookie, salted rosemary shortbread, rose pistachio shortbread, buckwheat chocolate chip cookie, paprika peanut butter cookie, and Robert Redford cookie. EVERYTHING was delicious, but the true showstoppers for us were the salted maple pie, both types of shortbread, and the Robert Redford cookie. The second time we came back we ordered the salted maple pie slice, banana pete pie slice, and a dozen shortbread cookies. On top of offering delicious treats, they also have a neighborhood fund that you can donate to which is wonderful! Of all the local businesses, mom-and-pop owned businesses, Sister Pie continues to impress me. First, the owner, Lisa Ludwinski is an energetic go-getter. I appreciate the values she has instilled in her bakery, her commitment to the community in which she works, and her sheer hard work. Second, she and her team at the bakery continue to churn out a small variety of baked goods that delight both her regular and new customers. Her shortbread is my Kryptonite. I've tried a few of her pies and loved them all; I especially crave the pie cookies. The latter made an appearance at last year's holiday potluck but are currently unavailable, except in the holiday cookie box. Third, she continues to innovate and refine during COVID. When the bakery first re-opened, her baked goods made their way online. Customers could pre-order ahead of time, as well as place an online order for same-day pick-up. Grocery items could also be purchased (milk, butter, eggs, flour, fruits, and vegetables), serving a need within the neighborhood. Now, she has pivoted to take orders for her baked goods outdoors with the menu posted on her front door, as well as continuing with pre-orders. She is a true entrepreneur, changing processes to see what works, while still staying true to her vision and values (see photos). During COVID, I have upped my shopping here to support her and the bakery, stopping by every month or so. It was a gorgeous day on the day picked up my pre-order. I went with the aforementioned rosemary-flavored shortbread topped with sea salt, tasty lemon cookies with a dollop of icing, Robert Redford cookies, and some slices of Banana Pete pie. A friend had recommended the latter but this was the first time I've seen it offered. I am so glad I had remembered his recommendation; I loved the banana custard goodness with hints of pumpkin pie spicing. The holiday cookie box is a treat for the baking-impaired so that we don't miss out on holiday treats while our social media accounts blow up with week-end cookie-baking marathons. I have always wanted to try Sister Pie , and happened to visit a friend in the neighborhood. The last meal I had out in the world before Shelter in Place was from Sister Pie on Tuesday, March 10th. I did a speaking engagement at my friend's school in the area and then stopped in to get a bite and some treats to take home before heading to vote, and it was, in retrospect, a very good call. I mean, on a normal day Sister Pie is a very good call. But during *waves hands* all this....it was the comfort food I didn't realize I needed in my house as the world shut down around us. I got a few slices of pie--the malted lime and the coconut chess, a variety of cookies, and to eat there, the kale, chickpea hand pie. Everything, as always, was spectacular. I can't wait for us to come out on the other side of this to visit again. In the meantime, if you're practicing baking at home, I highly recommend picking up their Sister Pie cookbook. I've been an amateur home baker for years now and have tried a variety of pie dough recipes and theirs is now my absolute favorite. I will never go back to another. And the other recipes in there, like the caramelized onion, sage, and butternut squash hand pies, are incredible. Every recipe I've tried has been a winner. Sister Pie is not currently in baking production but they are putting together boxes of grocery items for people in the neighborhood. Built on loans, grants and friendship, plus a 24-hour dance marathon in 2015, guests entering Sister Pie will quickly note a sizable workspace filled with women, many taking time to greet patrons or offer suggestions of items tucked away on a table behind glass. Willing to take a stance on environmental issues and workers' rights, a no-tipping policy utilized to assure equality in pay plus biodegradable packaging and composting a priority, choices change daily but always include Cookies such as the Wheat-free Buckwheat Chocolate Chip, Oatmeal Golden Raisin and smoky-smooth Peanut Butter Paprika. Not forgetting a "Sandwich Cookie" that looks like two bite-sized Biscuits around Buttercream, a favorite recommended by friends who've taken one of Lisa's baking classes, suffice it to say Sister Pie's "From Another Galaxy Brownie" lives up to its name while being both gluten-free and vegan while the Strawberry Cornmeal Scone was an edible snapshot of late-Summer. Obviously not forgetting some eponymous slices, two of four available this day, Salted Maple spins Canada's classic beautifully on an all-Butter Crust while The Banana Pete puts a mountain of Meringue and crumbled Cookies on a Banana Custard base. read more

First visit here and it was disappointing. If you want to get a pie, you have to come EARLY. I got here just before noon and the line was out the door and down the sidewalk. By the time I made it inside I got to see the list of pies- today they had 4 different variations of pies, and they all sounded delicious. I would have been happy with any of the options. Where did it go wrong? They didn't bother to update the board or make announcements as the pies sold out. I waited for at least 30 minutes, only to find out that they didn't even have pies left. I chatted with a few people out on the sidewalk as I left (the line was still getting longer) and they too were waiting for pies. Lesson learned. Don't come out of your way to visit unless you are going to be early early early. Early bird gets the pie. read more

You know when you dream of visiting a place for months (even years) and it finally happens and it's amazing and your heart basically explodes?! That's exactly the feeling I had when I FINALLY got to visit Sister Pie after a year of following them on Instagram. I love baked goods, and when my family and I moved to Michigan (we're Texas transplants), I immediately started searching for new bakery spots. Unsurprisingly, so many of the good ones were downtown - which is a good 35 minute haul from where we live! So I tucked Sister Pie in the back of my mind, and waited for the day we could finally meet. Well - as luck would have it, I finally had to stop by my office downtown one morning and once I realized Sister Pie was a mere 5 miles away, I knew I had to make a trip. Upon parking, I noticed the the cute outdoor seating area that looked so welcoming despite the morning dew. I made a mental note to pop a squat with my son after we had bought some goodies. We walked in, and I noticed how cozy and quaint the store was. It's not big by any means, but it has alot of personality and the staff were warm and gave us friendly smiles. I looked at the goodies (they all looked AMAZING) and basically sampled them all. LOL! No joke, we walked out with: 3 lemon drop cookies, 2 strawberry pie sandwiches, 1 from another galaxy brownie, 1 strawberry cornmeal scone (but I came back for another because it was SO GOOD and we finished it before we left the store), 1 buttered corn scone, half a dozen salted rosemary cookies, a slice of salted maple pie, and a slice of the red stone fruit pie. PHEW!! We loved EVERYTHING. Like legit, not one thing wasn't good. NOT ONE. Some heavy hitters though: the strawberry cornmeal scone is packed with strawberries and is the right combo of salty and sweet, the salted rosemary cookies are a unique taste and threw me off at first but then I couldn't get enough and ate all six in one sitting! Legit probably the most uniquely flavored cookie I've ever had. The salted maple pie was such a winner and my husband fought me for the last bite! It literally melted in our mouths. And the from another galaxy brownie is so rich and creamy - I loved the coconut flakes mixed in there. They were a nice unsuspecting surprise. Adorable lil' bakery next to Marrow! I've been here 1x pre-pandemic and most recently just a couple weeks back... The first time, I don't recall being all that impressed so I decided to hang onto reviewing. For instance, I wasn't a huge fan of the buckwheat choco chip because...I'm a bit of a purist. & the pies were just OK. However, the second time, I had some tasty goods: *Peanut Butter Paprika Cookie - who would've thought!! What a heavenly and visually pleasing combo! *Triple Cinnamon Bun - Although I like my cinnamon buns a bit fluffier, this was still very tasty! *Strawb sisters - don't think this is a permanent menu item but as they described "basically a piece of pie dough wrapped around strawberries" which made it really danish-like. It was a very nice couple-biter! The strawberries had a nice fresh strawberry tartness to it! I wanted to try one of the savory items but they were already out! So, I highly recommend arriving early on weekends - the line moves but it's truly one person at a time being served & that's "slowed down" even more as people are picking up their pre-ordered whole pies! read more

Not a bakery that keeps much surplus. They only had a handful of cinnamon rolls and the chocolate coconut pies, whole or slices. It's mostly a bakery, one long community table with 7-8 seats. Not much room for lines at all. We settled on the spranola with some locally made yogurt, sell at eastern market and some cranberry compote and a slice of the chocolate coconut pie. The spranola with yogurt and cranberry compote was good. The chocolate coconut was decadent, rich and moist. The chocolate pie was like a lovely fudgy brownie. It was so rich we could only eat a few bites. Note to self, come much earlier than a half hour before they close. They sell out quick. read more

Final meal in Motor City. We came here last Monday, early afternoon, before heading to the airport, and--tragedy of tragedies--the salted maple pie that everybody told us to get was sold out. BOO. You should always have a backup of your best seller! We made the best of it and got a single slice of their version of a banana cream pie, and it was truly unbelievable. The banana pudding portion of it was just so...sophisticated, for lack of a better word. Like, the whole thing was elegant. The meringue was just right and the portions of each layer with the crispy crust were spot on. Coffee is also good and the woman at the counter was friendly. There's no seating inside (how does that work in a Detroit winter?!) but there are some cute tables outside where we shared our treat. Final note: we got a bag of their mixed cookies to go and the GF buckwheat chocolate ship was shockingly amazing for being GF. We also loved the chocolate coconut one, but the oatmeal raisin was lackluster in comparison. Anyway, it's a sweet corner spot and we need to come back for that maple pie. I gobbled that thing down in bites. Thank gosh I bought one slice. Had I bought the whole pie, I would've probably finished it all in one sitting. Their savory pastries were awesome too. I wished I bought more for the flight home. That staff was VERY friendly, helpful, and patient.
