A golden standard for Italian sandwiches in this neighborhood…read more Buy them by the layer... try the 18 if ya have a empty belly and want half for later haha. Grab a dmall thing of antipasta or pasta salad and a small thing of mixed olives and peppers from the salad bar. The perfect lunch. Also after going here for 39 years, i realized i can also just buy mortadella by the pound. Mortadella is hard to come by without taking a 30 minute drive so this was a late revelation for me. Walk in, stand in front of the counter, tell em what ya want, wait 2 minutes and walk to the counter with your sandwich to pay.

I can't believe the place is still here after all of these years. There are 2 types of subs here: Italian, and "Other Subs", so you know that this shop sprang from the vibrant Italian community that once populated Detroit. The Italian Subs at Gonella's are ordered according to how many layers it builds up (which I think is a unique concept). These layered Gonella Italian Subs are layered with a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Mortadella, Smoked Ham and Capicola), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions & Gonella's homemade dressing. Soft or hard roll. Extras: Peppers (+.50) Cheese (+.50) - (Turkey is reserved for the "Other Subs). 6 Layers Meat, 1 Layer Cheese --- $8 8 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $9 12 Layers Meat, 2 Layer Cheese --- $12 14 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $13 18 Layers Meat, 3 Layer Cheese --- $14 The subs are heavy and delicious. The Service is ultra friendly. And the atmosphere feels like and Italian Deli-Market. I recommend it.

Really solid sandwich spot, large portions served on delicious fresh focaccia. The focaccia had the…read moreperfect texture, slightly crispy outside with a soft spongy inside. We tried the spicy chicken caesar and the reuben angelo (made it the angelina by swapping turkey for the corned beef). The spicy chicken caesar was very tasty but I loved the angelina. So much flavor and texture in one sandwich. My only minor complaint was that the thousand island dressing needed to be better spread out, but who cares when the sandwich is this good? I would definitely eat both sandwiches again and go back to try the rest of their menu. We ordered online and it was ready when we came to pick it up. The staff was friendly and they have plenty of people working (one at the register and 3 making sandwiches). They have a few tables (the space isn't that large) as well as a single bathroom.

I wanted to give this place a 5. Badly. Because the flavors popped and were so good. I had the…read moreTurkey Bella. What a delight. Everything was so good. The combination of the sandwich was amazing. But one thing held this back... the focaccia was dry and fell apart. Wash bite I took, small pieces fell off (no not crumbs haha). This took away from the enjoyment of such a great sandwich. The bread is so important. And dry bread can ruin it. Alas I will still try this place again when I am in town. Because everything else was great. Hoping I got them on a bad day.

I have been a big fan of corned beef and pastrami for years but my go to is on the other side of the city not to far from Dearborn, there is a couple other delis in eastern market area, one I like and the other I think is outrageous and the people there are rude, well today I was in the mood for a good corned beef on rye, got looking at a few apps I have and I come across Champs which is in Gratiot Central market where I go to buy certain meats to grill and smoke, but I never have gone there to buy prepared food, well I'll tell you it was Very Good ! The place is simple ,it is clean, they have a cool old Ford truck in there well the have half of it but none the a nice place , and the lady that waited on me was very cool, I decided I wanted Pastrami Indian it was excellent the , it was not greasy which is what I like to see it was heated just right and got slaw on it and my bread wasn't a soggy mess, I thought the price point was very good for my sandwich which also came with 2 pickles that were good and my drink, And the info I read is this is a small business this isn't corporate owned this is someone or family doing it cause they love please try support small business they need it now more than ever , I thought it was very good I hope you do as well.
