Pork Belly skewer
Stephanie B.

I loved the vibe and the interior of the restaurant, it's beautiful! $5 happy hour was amazing, with a menu where every item is $5. The Jasmine Collins cocktail was light and refreshing. The chicken bites had some spice and a great sauce to dip them in. The pork belly skewers were tender and delicious. We would love to come back and try the ramen!

I was staying down the street and saw happy hour 3-6 and it did not disappoint. Upon arrival I sat at the bar as I was alone (also not sure if HH is just at the bar). But the bartender was prompt and very nice and food was delicious. Perks of happy hour is they have small bits, so I got to try multiple things, I would even recommend going with someone so you can share even more items.

Chicken Katsu Curry

We had dinner at Ima Izakaya and were excited to try some of the newer menu items. The space was dimly lit and relaxed, not too busy, and service was timely. Not overly warm, but efficient. We started with the ahi tuna tartare (4.5/5), which ended up being the clear standout. The tuna was fresh and nicely dressed, and the sesame rice crisps, while oversized on the plate, were actually perfect for each bite. The avocado added just enough richness to round everything out. I honestly wish we had ordered a second. I went with a couple of handrolls, and this is where things leveled off (3/5). The salmon avocado roll was fine, but the salmon was overseared and flaky instead of smooth and tender. The spicy tuna handroll was standard, though the tuna felt overly minced and a bit pasty. At $9 a handroll, I would prefer less handling and a cleaner texture. Sometimes simple is better. My wife ordered the chicken katsu curry (3.5/5). If you have had Japanese market curry rice with a fresh chicken katsu, this dish brings those elements together, but it does not elevate them beyond that. At $26, we hoped for a bit more refinement or a little twist. The portion of pickled ginger was surprisingly large and mixed into the dish more than we would have liked. It is probably best to ask for that on the side. Overall, it did not quite do it for us. We will definitely be back, but next time we will probably just stick to the classics. Ramen and udon all the way!

If you are looking for rich, well balanced, flavorful ramen this is the place for you! We got the pork tonkotsu ramen and it was phenomenal. The pork was extremely well seasoned and it was a nice juicy size. The bowl is huge so I shared it with my husband and we were both stuffed by the end of our meals We also got the edamame which was the best I've ever had. I'm not usually a big edamame fan to be honest but the seasoning on these edamame brought new life and meaning to eating it. 10/10. My father in law joined us for lunch and had the ginger tori ramen. He never had ramen before and is a little picky with his food but he ate the whole bowl. I tried some of his and it was good. If you're looking for a good intro to ramen that's a good one to start with. It tastes like an elevated top ramen from college days We also got the salmon avocado hand roll which was extremely good. It was very fresh and the combo of flavors was delightful. Our only complaint is for the price it was a bit small The grilled asparagus and mushroom skewers were my least favorite. I didn't like the combination of the two and the texture was slightly off putting. It was small enough to not ruin our overall experience but just wouldn't have again. The drinks were very well curated mix of cocktails with Japanese influence on classic cocktails. They were a tad pricey but worth it This place is not a sit down for a fancy meal in a stuffy place. This is a place you come for exceptional food without the fluff of being pretentious. It felt as intimate as someone's backyard but still clean and inviting. The staff is extremely knowledgeable of how the food is prepared and made sure we were taken care of at all times. Highly recommend

Sooooooooo good! Best ramen I've had! We got a carryout for a cozy night in. I loved it so much! I had the Yuzu miso ramen with tofu and it was excellent. The porcini broth was very flavorful and the tofu was delicious and a nice, firm texture. Veggie dumplings as a starter was very tasty and the spicy Bok Choi was the perfect side. I loved the spice! Everything was so flavorful and perfect. My boyfriend really enjoyed the Golden Curry Don. Lots of great vegetarian and vegan options. I definitely want to eat their food again.

Really cute spot, I like this location. Good service and friendly staff. Ramen was yummy and flavorful. The menu had a lot of options so I will definitely be visiting again!

In town for personal reasons, I found out that some of my work teammates were also in town and meeting up for dinner at this Ima Izakaya location. I'd heard such great things about it (and never want to pass up the opp to meet up with friends), so I kind of invited myself to join them! It was a Wednesday evening around 7pm and the place was packed! We started with some appetizers (edamame, fries, and dumplings) and all was stellar including the service. However, we needed more time before placing our entree orders and at that time, our server may have given up on us a bit due to a larger party... we had to flag someone down to take our order after a pretty long wait. Entrees were not quite as much as a hit as the apps, but they were still pretty good... we had a variety of food amongst our party of four ranging from the eggplant, a noodle dish, a ceviche, and something else. I would absolutely return and probably try the ramen next time as well as a cocktail or two... I think we just had an "off night" with service and ordered wrong too. Still good, but imagine it will be great next time!

The best noodles I've ever had. Ima Izakaya is a MUST visit! Everything about it is perfect! The aesthetic is so cool and well fitting where it's located in Corktown. The service is top of the line, and the vibes are exactly what you would want! Every single item I had tasted absolutely phenomenal and was executed to perfection! The authentic Robata grill is a game changer, and they serve up some incredible skewers from it! The dumpling had the ideal crispy bottom, while the rest of the dumpling was steamy and had delicious filling. The noodles took the whole experience to that next level; they seriously were the best noodles I've ever had! I truly can't say enough great things about this place; you need to give them a try as soon as you can!!

Spicy Pork Tonkotsu Ramen

Had heard great things about this place and it did not disappoint! I went on a Thursday around 6PM and we were able to get seated right away. The ambiance is great, very thoughtful design, and very cozy especially on the rainy day that we went. I ordered the Spicy Pork Tonkatsu Ramen and it was incredible. The broth was not too salty, just the right amount of spice, and the pork was very tender. I would highly recommend this dish and would certainly order it again! I will say the one tricky thing about this spot is parking. After circling the area, we got lucky and were able to find street parking behind the restaurant. Otherwise, this spot was amazing and I will definitely be back!

I got the spicy pork belly udon noodles and it was so delicious. The crispness and tenderness of the pork belly was amazing. Loved the broth, so tasty!

Such an amazing experience and amazing HH! A cute space in corktown with a quirky eclectic vibe. Our bartender was amazing, extremely accommodating and was very attentive. We ordered almost one of everything on the Happy Hour menu - the drink and food menu with everything $5. The spam and kimchi skewers were amazing, loved the hot broth, the hand rolls were also awesome. Will absolutely be back soon! We were so excited we forgot to take pictures of the food

Came to Detroit for a concert and happened upon this restaurant before the show! The interior was absolutely stunning inside of this place! Found myself just looking around before even getting to the host stand haha We were able to order some happy hour drinks for $5 each which was amazing! The Jasmine Collin's was incredibly refreshing! For an appetizer we tried the Spicy Tuna with Sesame Chips! The sesame chips were light and crispy and the tuna was so fresh and had a nice heat to it! Everyone seemed happy with this! For my entree I liked the Chilean Sea Bass! The miso on the fish was SO good! And the cabbage salad was a great texture difference to balance with the fish. 10/10 dish! Dessert here was the Choco-Caramel Crunch. We all took notes and loved the notes of miso and caramel mixed in with the rich chocolate mousse.. yum. Food was amazing, the place was aesthetically pleasing to look at, and every single person who helped serve us was just so wonderful and kind! I will definitely be recommending this place and looking forward to the next time I'm able to return! Check it out if you're in the cork town area of Detroit :)

Fries, Shrimp and Scallion Dumplings, and Edamame
Jayme H.

I was in town for a quick trip and the evening I got in, a few coworkers and I grabbed dinner here. I had found them on Yelp a few weeks prior and made a reservation. Good thing I did because the place was popping. The space itself had quite a vibe to it. White brick walls, shelves stacked with plants, dim lighting, and even a disco ball. I was into it. Our group decided to share a few appetizers to get things going. We ordered the edamame, street fries, spicy cucumbers, and shrimp dumplings along with a round of drinks. I had lost my voice a few days before so I went with the hot green tea with honey. It came out in a cute tea kettle, which kept it hot and gave me a few refills. Loved that for me. After that all arrived at the table we decided to snack and catch up a bit before ordering more. The spicy cucumber and street fries were probably my favorite, but it was all tasty. After that our server disappeared. A half hour went by, and no one checked in on us. We tried grabbing the attention of other staff with a little eye contact and friendly gesture and were ignored. When someone finally made it to our table, it was a new server. Something about it being really busy. I get that, but whatever. Anyhoo, for my entree I went with the yaki butter udon with tofu. It was creamy and flavorful and the portion was huge. I would order it again especially if I was really hungry. All in all, I totally get the hype. If I lived in the area I could totally see myself returning to explore the menu more.

Hubby and I laughed at how many times we zipped past the restaurant without noticing it. My husband and I both ordered the Major Tom Khatsu, which has a coconut chicken broth base. The chicken katsu pieces were the perfect level of crispy without being heavily breaded. There was also a nice little kick to the dish, which made it so, so yummy. Our friends got the Shoyu ramen with pork belly, and the Corned Beef ramen. The Shoyu dish seemed to be more enjoyable. Though we stuck with water, cans of Faygo pop seemed to be the drink offerings - other than alcoholic beverages. Areas for improvement include the waiting. Johnny Noodle King is a small place, with a main dining area and then what seems to be a bar area attached. We initially waited by the door for our table along with another small group (we were a party of four). We were then asked to go to the bar area to wait so that it would clear the door, but found it interesting how we were asked to move but not the other group. Also, we were standing away from the doormat we were not obstructing anyone's movements. The wait was long, and we asked if we could order food to the bar area (as opposed to waiting for a table). We were told 'no', yet there was a table full of patrons who were eating. There was no notification system, so our friend had to keep going to the front to see if our table was ready. Don't get me wrong; 'hooray' to Johnny Noodle King for having such great business volume. However, they need a way to manage it so that people will not be put off. Once we were seated, we did have good service from our waitstaff, and the food was very good. My husband and I plan to return to explore more of the menu. Hopefully, we can pick a time of day when waiting won't be such a big issue.

I had a pineapple suju, which I think was way cheaper at the grocery store, but that is okay, it went well with the meal. They have many things on their menu, and they give you an ipad to order, but not everything on the menu was on the ipad, so I ordered a couple things in person with the waitstaff and thus did not pay on the ipad (I image you are able to, but we needed a paper bill since a couple items were not included). I love the serve yourself bonchon, their items were so good. The kimchi was pretty sour, the fishcakes and kimchi pancakes were my favorite. I love the cucumbers, especially the one with sliced jalapeños. Those were so good. We got a couple sushi rolls, some black bean noodles, spicy pork, soy garlic popcorn chicken, ramen, and a chicken bao. The only thing I was not overly impressed with was the bao, it was just the popcorn chicken and not worth the price. But they rest, I felt the prices were great and the portions were big. They also had tea, which was nice. This is a great place and I look forward to visiting again soon.
