My friend suggested this spot and we gave it a shot on a Friday afternoon. Once you enter, you can either order at the register or take a seat at one of tables for someone to take your order. I got the small bbq chicken with rice ($13.49) and a side salad ($2.99) and the chicken was really good and juicy. The rice was a little dry. The meal comes with two sides but you can only choose from rice, beans or fries without incurring substitution fees. This was a solid meal and for the amount of food you get, it's reasonably priced. Did not like the food at all. The pulled pork sandwich was really sub par. The meat was finely shredded with a bland sauce that seems like it came out of a container from the frozen section of a dollar store. There were pieces of tendon, not fat, in the meat! An instant turnoff when you bite into a hard rubbery tendon, giving me the same sickening feeling I get when biting into a raw piece of chicken. The fries were overly cooked, greasy and crunchy. The ketchup was a no name brand. The bottled bbq sauce had a bit of a vinegar taste, dark appearance, and did not have a bbq flavor. Bottled drinks only. There's no ice machine. There are a few tables in the place, but the temp was at least 85 degrees. No ventilation at all. I walked out sweating. Parking is very scarce. Bottom line, no need at all to visit this place. This is as simple as it gets with BBQ. No regard for flavoring. You get one choice of sauce and it's generic (store bought) flavored. If more focus was placed on smoking and remove a lot of unnecessary menu items they stand a good chance to becoming a real BBQ establishment. There's too many good real BBQ places in NJ to subject yourself to this, unless you're that hungry or don't have time for anything else. This is a great Portuguese barbecue spot. My family has been ordering here for the last couple of years and have never been disappointed. You can smell the barbecue from outside and it makes me even hungrier than I already am. They offer sandwiches, appetizers, salads, and entrées. They have a handful of meat choices to grill. Forget the grill and order catering for your next event from here! We only have Italian and Asian in the area that delivers so when I found out we could get some Portuguese BBQ in the mix I was stoked! I am always on a mission for a good variety of food that can be delivered to help make life easier and Fire Pit BBQ came to the rescue for our father's day foodies so my hub didn't have to use the grill. The food was delivered hot and on time and we even received rave reviews from our vegetarian! There was a large quantity of food delivered and the price was SOOOO reasonable. I was surprised they would deliver so far out of the area but they were so accommodating and I will order again and highly recommend, you give them a shot to cater your next event. Even the pickiest eaters enjoyed their meals! We would have spent just as much if we had to buy and cook all the meats ourselves so this was an awesome way to entertain with way less effort. We ordered the 3 most popular meats: Chicken, Beef Short Ribs and traditional Pork Ribs. All meats were seasoned perfectly. The pork ribs were definitely a fan favorite. The chicken was moist. For sides we had: Fries, Rice, Beans, Salad and sauteed Broccoli and Carrots in a garlic aioli sauce. Definitely put a few spoonfuls of beans on top of the yellow rice and it's the perfect combination and a meal in itself. The fries were addictive..I think my hub sprinkled on a little extra salt. The salad came with ranch and oil and vinegar dressing which was awesome because I never have dressing on hand so the fact they offered a variety was awesome. They also sent BBQ and hot sauces on the side. Also, the best part was the order came with all the serving wear, eating utensils, napkins and plates so I literally didn't have to come inside for anything except for drinks and a few extra napkins. There was only one hiccup because I placed the order on Friday for delivery on Father's Day (Sunday) and there was a miscommunication because food showed up on Saturday. I was no where near my home to accept a delivery. Luckily, a neighbor was having a party and was able to accept the order but this did put me a little over my original budget that I had originally planned. Our neighbors had to reheat the food on the grill which dried out the chicken a bit but the ribs were sent medium and stayed flavorful and juicy even after reheating. However, for eating this two days in a row it was delicious both days...and we still have leftovers that can be enjoyed. At both events EVERYONE kept asking "Where did you get this food from?" because they were all impressed! Someone even knew the place and said they ordered from their work office all the time for their employees and loved eating there. Next time, I will just ensure I'm more clear with the delivery date to avoid any miscommunications. I'm sure there will be a lot more requests for deliveries in my area as a result of everyone trying this delicious Portuguese BBQ. I know I will definitely order from here again! Been here a few times. This place is located on the corner of Essex St and S. Prospect Ave. I'd say this place is more of a 3.49, closer to a 3 than a 4. Food isn't bad. I've tried the rotisserie chicken and the chicken with garlic sauce. I prefer the chicken with garlic sauce. The rotisserie chicken is a bit dry. With each entree you can choose two sides. I've only chosen rice and fries. They give you a pretty large amount of food here. The entrees and the sides are generous portions. It's mostly a takeout joint with some tables for dine in. They do have table service here. As a side note, in the summer it gets super hot in here and there isn't really much ventilation with the exception of a few fans. I guess it's not really a fair comparison, but this place doesn't really stack up to some of the similar types of joints in Newark, but it isn't bad for this area. read more

Our daughter and her family live close to this place. Yet, they never thought to try it. I took a look at the Yelp reviews and convinced her and our son-in-law to give it a try. She was skeptical but agreed to go for lunch. The restaurant itself is small with just a few tables. There is an outside dining area but it also is small. Just keep in mind that this place is very near the hospital so you are going to be hearing sirens quite a bit. In warm weather, they prop open the front door which means you can't count on the sound to be muted at all. Parking isn't easy. It involves finding street parking--even going into the surrounding residential areas or hoping to find a spot behind the building but parking there is literally very tight, like in wondering once you get your car in there, will you be able to get it out. Our daughter insisted on driving here even though they are within walking distance! Since we were unfamiliar as to how the set up worked, our daughter went up to the counter and asked if a server would come to us or did we have to place our order at the counter. Turns out that if you eat in, a server will take your order. When we were there, around 2 p.m. on a weekday, there was just one server and counting us, 4 occupied tables so he was run a bit ragged. The prices here are excellent! As an example, for $8 you can get half of a chicken plus 2 sides, choosing from rice, beans and fries. Three of us chose to do just that. Our daughter decided to have a pulled pork sandwich, which also cost $8 and comes with lettuce, tomato and fries. She asked if she could substitute rice and beans and was told, yes she could but it would cost extra (I forget how much more). So, she went for it. To drink, we all got sodas. They are served either in bottles or cans. We got coke and were given 20 ounce bottles. I had noticed 12 oz. cans in the fridge and if I had been thinking, I would have specifically asked for one of them. So, be aware if you don't want too much soda, specify a can. The chicken was very tasty! I was impressed at how moist the white meat was! That said, I have 2 criticisms---1) the meat wasn't cut properly so I found bone fragments every now and then as I ate; 2) the spicy rub wasn't evenly distributed as I caught a taste from time to time instead of on a consistent basis. Still, since the chicken is cooked over charcoal, that nice bbq flavoring was still imparted. Our daughter really liked her pulled pork sandwich. She gave us all a bit of a taste and I must say that the bbq sauce used was tasty and with a bit of spiciness. The server brought out squeeze bottles of 2 types of bbq sauce that we could add to our food. Our daughter tried the spiciest of the two and she was impressed with the amount of heat in it. We all really liked the rice and beans. The rice is a yellow rice with a few carrot bits in it. My worries that it would be dried out turned out to be unfounded as it was moist and flavorful. The black beans also had good flavor and complimented the rice very nicely. We all agreed that we would certainly eat here again. As a bonus, they do deliver---something that wasn't lost on our daughter and son-in-law. Plus they have a kids' menu. If you are in the area and like Portuguese bbq, give them a try! read more

Ambiance/Decor/Atmosphere: If you didn't know this was Firepit BBQ you'd think you were walking into a pizzeria. The interior is pretty middle of the road; some tables and chairs as you'd expect, grill and rotisserie in the back of the kitchen, nothing really out of the ordinary or eye popping either. Noise/sound level: It's a small place; phone calls, television, small talk, but not overly loud even at 6:30pm. Menu: The menu is pretty large comprised of a variety of Portuguese and Latin American food, platters, sandwiches, dessert, and BBQ. Even though it's a little large the menu isn't too confusing; it's kind of direct and to the point. Service: I ordered take out and the man on the phone was polite, interactive, and understanding when I said I couldn't get there until 6:30pm. When I picked up the food he was equally polite then too. The guys cooking food behind him appeared to be happy; wouldn't want a pissed off man grilling my meats. Food: I ordered bitoque and it was mediocre at best. The chips were drowned in a pretty aggressive garlic sauce, and I love garlic. The pickled vegetables were a nice addition; good acidity and crunch, whereas my chips were soggy and limp. The bread that came with it was pretty good, but if you mess a dinner roll it's time to shut the doors. The ham appeared to be Hillshire Farms cold cuts and there were only two slices, but the sunny side up fried eggs were done well; nice and runny. Lastly, the steak was tender, but it was not really a quality cut of meat, and by the time I got to it the cook temp was well done. I asked for medium, but obviously because I was late and it was warming the meat rested too long. Bar: Not sure, wasn't paying attention. Maybe none, maybe BYOB. Price: For the large portion size the price point is pretty fair. $15 gets you a meal for two. Overall: This place was a hard three for me. The meal itself doesn't really warrant a three, but I do want to order other items from here. I'm not sure I'd order bitoque again, but if I do I probably will ask for less sauce. I ordered one whole chicken. It was advertised with 2 sides. I ordered fries and beans thinking it would be plenty for 4 people. I also ordered one portuguese sausage. A small chicken arrived with enough fries for two people. The small alluminum tray looked empty.. we checked the chicken parts a few times to make sure it was a whole chicken. It was tiny. There were not even enough fries to fill in for the tiny chicken. I didn't eat any fries so that everyone else could get a small portion. My daughter in law offered to make something extra because it looked so small.. There were only 4 of us. There should have been at least enough for 4. The tray cost me around 15.00. (In the past I have ordered a tray from other places at 12 dollars with twice the amount we received today.). A very small serving of beans accompanied the order as the second side. The 10.99 portuguese sausage was cut up... which is fine... but I have bought a whole sausage many times before in Seabras... I know it was only half a sausage for 10.99 with a decorative lettuce leaf underneath to make it look less empty. This was a very disappointing experience and I feel cheated for the money. My new go to place for lunch, we've ordered from here 3 times this week and it's only Thursday. I'm a huge fan of Portuguese churriscuria eateries but up until discovering Fire Pit, I needed to make the trek to Spring Valley, NY. Food is delicious and cheap. For under $10 you can get a pile of ribs or chicken accompanied with lots of beans and rice or french fries. The pictures don't lie. Both food quality and quantity are terrific, especially given the cost. You can also order larger platters to share, something we do on weekends when we feed our entire department. Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to eat on their premisis but will try and make it in soon. I read a recent review by someone who flamed them because it wasn't traditional American BBQ food. It's certainly not nor do they claim to be. The absence of brisket, pulled pork and collard greens should be your first hint. I'm sorry but there's no reason to fault a business because you misunderstood where you were or what they serve.
