We were looking for a place to have dinner in Springfield, OR and stumbled upon this old fashioned diner. Took me back in time. The place looks the part and the only question was whether the food would taste good. My friend was craving a milk shake so we decided to give it a try. She ordered the Fins Burger and a fresh banana milk shake. I settled for a Bel Air Burger with a side of onion rings. The service was excellent. Taylor brought our order out quickly and checked up on us a couple of times . The shake was thick and very good My friend love it. The burgers were also very good. Stopped at Fins on our way out to the coast. It's a relatively small old-school drive-in but there is a bar and a few dine-in tables. It worked out great for us because they had a big parking lot with room for ore RV. All of our food was good & we had great, friendly service. read more

This is such a fun 1950ish style old-fashioned place it would be great to take out of towners, but I'm a local and this is the only place I go for a burger as I don't eat fast food. When you eat a Fins burger, it actually tastes like meat and not some frozen pre-processed product. The breakfast special is less than $5.00! They also serve old fashioned milkshakes, sodas, etc. It is charming and they even sell home-made pie which I will go there just for a slice! At first you notice the cool neon sign driving in with the rear end of a fin tail caddy overhead. Slow rolled into a spot and hit the call button. The speak popped on like it was 1955, no digital pure analog here - as the voice from inside asked me for my order. A Bel Air burger with no onions and pepper jack cheese, a side of onion rings with a soda fountain vanilla shake. About 20 minutes later the car hop is at my car window and there's my food - fresh hot and made to order. Golden brown onion rings hot freshly made, you can tell by the look and taste they've never been frozen, delicious crunchy sweet fried oniony goodness. Then that rich old school soda fountain extra thick milkshake - creamy cold vanilla Umpqua ice cream awesomeness, first rate. And the Bel Air burger, a cooked well done burger, the bacon flavorful thick cut and not over crispy, the pepper jack melted nicely over it all sitting atop of shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes and thousand island dressing. A good sloppy cheeseburger (if any fault's to be found, the dressing was a little heavy) still a good made to order hamburger. The reason for 2 stars is our most recent and most likely LAST visit to Fins, (and I think two stars is generous due to the circumstances... In fact, the only reason for two is the friendliness of one of our two servers.) I post this so that hopefully someone will be made aware that they need to be cautious in there job rather than careless. I'd say, it's common sense when setting extremely hot beverages down to not set them beside a 1 year old in a high chair-- but apparently this isn't taught or practiced at this establishment. As one of the servers decided to set a fresh cup of coffee down next to my toddler who IMMEDIATELY reached out for it and ended in hot coffee all down the front of his body. Thankfully my partner and I were quick to rip his clothes off and he now only has some small marks on his body. But the way he screamed out in pain... I understand mistakes happen, but this is negligent and could've put my child in the hospital. I would've appreciated at least an apology for setting the HOT cup down quite literally in front of my kid-- but instead we just received a 'here's a towel', and no further interaction with that server until we paid our bill. To which they still didn't acknowledge the incident. Other than the above, The food is okay. It's cheap and definitely a classic diner/drive-in vibe. We've been a few times in the last few months and in general the experience is the same each time. The tab is always minimal so it's good for those on a tight budget. The serving staff is generally friendly. When it comes to allergies and dietary restrictions, most of the staff is clueless. I've been told different things from different staff members. For example, our first visit I asked if they had dairy in the chili-- the server didn't check the kitchen, but instead insisted that it did have dairy. The next time, the server offered to check and came back with a 'it's dairy free!' There were other instances where they didn't even know the ingredients in the food. So it's generally not safe for those with serious allergies or those who drink hot beverages and have small children. read more

On our quest to try every breakfast joint in Eugene/Springfield, Fins was on the list and so here we found ourselves. It's a little divey but in a kitschy Americana way. It appears to be an old A&W and still has a drive in aspect (after 11 am). The coffee was average, the waitresses were nice (and busy) and the food is delicious and at a great price! I ordered the 6 piece French toast and they make some of the best I've had (and 6 pieces here, with Texas toast style bread, was too many to finish). Delicious! My husband got an omelette with cottage potatoes and toast (we'd never heard of cottage potatoes but they're thin-ish sliced, round, fried potatoes and he loved them). Ok Fin's was good...actually really good. The wait for our food was long though. The waitresses look short staffed because she was running to cover all the tables. It took 40 minutes but when my french dip came...it was totally delicious. My hubby got the fish and chips and he said it was his favorite ever! That's big because he is very fussy about his fish and chips! So don't go here if you're in a hurry or squeamish about cleanliness. It needs a good scrubbing and fresh paint. My favorite diner when I need to move away from fast food burgers and want to take in the 1950's aesthetic as I dine. The words that come to mind are "quaint" and "humble" because the restaurant isn't extensively large or extravagant beyond its themed nostalgia appearance. There are dine-in or drive-in options depending on your style with a barstool area as well. The highlight item of this place has got to be the milkshakes. They are well-prices based on their size and quality with a huge variety of flavor choices plus the ability to combine various types. Most of the food is standard Americana fair, but it's solid for the type of diner it is. The Fins Classic burger is the primary menu staple and I enjoy it each time I get it. My only knock would be the restrooms (and not because they aren't clean). The lavatrice is the most "interesting" part of the restaurant due to its stark, white-washed contrast to the rest of the environment within. You feel like you move from a place of retro-embellishment to a sanitized cave of a jail cell. It's just a bit strange and hanging a few pieces of memorabilia/changing the lighting could do wonders for it. Service can also be a hit-or-miss with some of the waitresses being very attentive, with others not so much (when I'm shooting the breeze with a friend though, I don't really mind). I get why some reviews would write this place off as nothing special. As a local however, it's definitely a great little place to get away for a lunch or dinner! read more

Picked up an order to go from here today. Ordered two burgers and a fish and chips. The fish was burnt to a crisp and half of the order was completely inedible. I mean the fish was burnt rock solid. One of the hamburgers was also over cooked but for the most part edible. The fries were okay. When we called to let them know, they said there was nothing they could do about it unless we took it back, but who wants to drive back? She seemed unconcerned, stated there was no manager, had an attitude and barely apologized. I'd likely go back if they were apologetic and said they would speak to their cook. My first excursion to Fin's was solo, walking in the early morning Springfield heavy fog, up a (Main) street that seemed rather sketchy, not knowing what or who I might find when I entered, hoping for a good cuppa coffee to sip while I read the Register Guard. It really is like stepping back into a 50's diner and, as Amy P. said before me, the food is all freshly made. Subsequent trips have included Stephen, who wakes me up around 6:30 am and suggests we go for breakfast! My coffee cup is always full and their breakfasts are cooked to perfection. Their milkshakes are thick and delicious and their burgers & fries never disappoint. It is diner food, don't go expecting nouveu cuisine or gourmet. We've lived in the Eugene-Springfield for two years now and have complained that there isn't a good local burger anywhere. Sure wayback and sonic are great but most places seem to care that you know the burger you're eating is from a grass fed cow named bessie and care less about the burger's flavor. However, we drove by Fins today and decided to try it. It was fantastic. Simply fantastic. It is a legit 50's style diner with great flavor offering real ice cream soda's and floats etc... Easily my favorite restaurant in all of Springfield! As a burger guy, I stayed coming here for the amazing 1950's-esque mustang amd fries. Then I discovered the perfectly fried, meath yet crispy, country fried steak sandwich on toasted sourdough. Wow, such an unexpected disappointment. Drove from north Eugene for the onion rings (which were the highlight of an otherwise depressing meal). They weren't full - only four or five cars when we got there, and that went down to two or three almost immediately. Pulled up to the speaker - placed the order (burger and a chili dog and onion rings) at 6:30 pm. I asked that the burger be cooked well-done and for a side of ranch. No problem, they said. A minute later I rang back and asked for them to add a glass of water. So far, I don't think I'm being difficult or asking too much. Then, we sat there and waited... And waited... And waited... Watched people come in and pick up their food - didn't begrudge them - they probably ordered online or called in before we did, right? We could see some of the staff (two guys and a cute girl) chatting and puttering around. Another girl looked like she was working a bit harder, but not happy (love quadrangle, maybe?) FORTY minutes later (at 7:10 pm), we were hungry and wondering if we'd been forgotten, so I hit the button again. After a minute (which is about 10 years in speaker time), they responded. They said it was almost ready, and they'd been busy (but no actual apology). Well, no - they hadn't been busy. I was there the whole time. Got to watch people come and go. No massive orders went out, and there really weren't all that many to go orders and what there was, seemed nice and steady rather than an all-at-once slamfest. I really dislike being lied to - even (especially?) about little things. They had time to do the outside garbage. They had time to stand around. The guys definitely made time to hit on the cute girl. But, hey, a few minutes later, they brought out the food. Didn't bring the water, so I had to ask again, and they had to make another trip. The food was warm, but not hot. Clearly, it had been sitting, but not too long. The bun for my chili dog was only a little bit gross and waterlogged where it had soaked up the watery chili juices. Probably hadn't been sitting for more than 10 minutes by the time I got it. The fries - which have been good in the past - had NO salt. Not "not enough salt". ZERO SALT. Have you ever had a French fry with no salt? They're kinda gross. So, looked in he bag - no salt. No ketchup (fine, some places make you ask now), and no napkins (really? We're at a drive up eating a burger and a chili dog, and you don't think we might need a napkin?). Rang again - asked for salt, ketchup, and napkins. The petulant face that brought them out made sure I knew I was being a difficult customer. (Which kinda sucked, since I'd already tipped about 22%). But, the onion rings were good enough, and because I have fond memories of past orders I'm giving them two stars instead of one. Oh, and I didn't like the chili - it was a little watery, too much like sloppy joe mix, not much by way of chili spices - but that's just a personal preference.
