I usually like seafood, however this was not the restaurant for me. I went there not for a huge meal, but an appetizer and to taste my family's dishes. Fish tacos were nothing special and menu was not great in my opinion. I hope to go back, as everyone I know loves this restaurant. read more

I actually haven't eaten here yet, but have heard decent reviews. I am a local resident in Summit and stopped by Fin the other day to ask for a donation for a local nursery school, for its first silent auction. The manager was nice enough and told me to call later to speak to the owner. I assumed they would be happy to support a local school considering all of summit supports them. I called later that day, spoke again to the manager and he remembered me. He placed me on hold for the owner. About 3 minutes later, the manager came back on the phone and rudely said "We are not interested in making a donation to this nursery school." I was surprised and explained to him that this a nursery school in town. He then said "Yes we know, but we are not interested in supporting it." I am posting this because if you are a Summit resident that wants to support local businesses, I would consider going to the ones that also support the local schools, and Fin is not one of them. read more

Issues that apparently occurred during the Fin's first several months in Summit have been corrected. We choose to celebrate several friends birthdays and found the service to be excellent. They were most attentive, but not annoying. The staff was familiar with the food selections and able to offer good suggestions. My sea scallops, served on baby spinach sauté was cooked perfectly and definitely received 5 stars. I however need to convince them to add a saffron risotto. When you factor in their BYOB policy, the prices become acceptable. The Fin has an excellent stock of appropriate wine glasses for your favorite vino. They also offered toasting flutes for our Prosecco. I would recommend smaller groups, as the noise level will interfere with your conversations. The antique tin ceiling and wood floors increases the noise level, but enhances the quaint ambiance. We choose to dine on a Thursday and were impressed that most every table was filled during our entire 2hr visit. Summit parking can be a challenge. There is a tier town lot with access off Maple just behind the Fin and street meters that end requiring payment at 6pm. The NJT RR station is a short 2-block walk. The Fin is an excellent addition to the Summit restaurant scene. read more

All I can say is wow. Excellent place to wine and dine. Came in for my anniversary with my girlfriend and was seriously impressed. Our server Doug made excellent recommendation and timed our courses perfectly. Started with oysters which happened to be half off on Tuesdays! Excellent way to start. The octopus appetizer was succulent - the lobster sliders were phenomenal with a nice crunch. The restaurant favorite seared tuna was awesome as was the Australian reef bass. The banana pudding with sea salt caramel ice cream was to die for. My girlfriend and I both remarked this one of the best places we've ever gone out to eat at in the area and plan on coming back soon! Excellent service and food. Can't beat the fact it's BYO. The overall experience is just okay. The mussels are very good but the fried calamari are just fried batter. I also ordered the Branzino which was okay but nothing to remember. It definitely lacked flavor. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate creme brulee and an apple dessert which were not good at all. If this place was not in Summit it would be closed. $20 corking fee is crazy. They got the order wrong so my wife ate while I watched her. Tables for 2 are all jammed in in the middle of the place. Asked to be moved but got a dismissive reply even though other parties of two came in for larger tables. This place has gone down hill in a hurry. From the rude waitress to the apathetic host, it was not a positive experience to say the least. The lobster sliders were more akin to a bad tuna fish sandwich from the local deli. When I asked if it was imitation lobster meat that they just smothered in mayo, the host actually admitted that it comes from a frozen "block" of lobster meat. I'm not sure what that even means, but $16 for 3 mini sliders of shredded "lobster block" that is smothered in mayo is just not a good look. Bang bang cauliflower was good but the shrimp and lobster spring rolls were over cooked and oily. As for the mains, the grilled shrimp and swordfish were both bone dry and very over cooked. Salmon was swimming in the glaze sauce. Add in the fact that the acoustics in there are awful and we spent the evening shouting to hear one another over the noise, and the result is "stay away". Should have gone across the street to Fiorino. Fin has seen much better days and there is zero chance we will ever be back. read more

The food and service was good, but the Valentines Day seating was not good. They took out most of the normal tables and put smaller tables closer together to fit more people in. The chair selection was terrible. They used flimsy, uncomfortable, plastic, fold-out chairs with the smaller tables. A little deceiving to swap on the normally nice tables and chairs with jammed together tables and uncomfortable $20 plastic chairs. Not really what you expect when you are paying $150-$200 for dinner. read more

GREAT FOOD BUT ODD SERVICE We ate at Fin several weeks ago and we found the food to be excellent. I had the Shanghai Lobster and Shrimp and asked that the chef prepare it a little spicier. Our other guests had soft shell crab and pasta dishes. Everything was delicious, especially my Shanghai Lobster and Shrimp which had just enough heat for me. We didn't care however for the policy of not seating you until your party arrives. While that it a popular mall chain restaurant tactic, it is inappropriate for an upscale dining establishment in a town like Summit. Considering the fact that it may take several minutes just to find a parking space, forcing the arrived guests to wait on the sidewalk holding bottles of wine in paper bags does not make for a great appearance. In addition to simply being discourteous, it's also unjustifiable since if the missing people never arrived wouldn't the guests on-hand still stay for dinner and need a table? Another odd feature is that the waiter takes your wine away, writes your table number on the label and keeps it on a counter by the kitchen. This makes refills infrequent and slow since you have to wait for the waiter to see you need more wine and then he/she has to get the chance to go to the kitchen counter for the bottle. Even more troubling, however, is the potential that an inattentive waiter can easily pour your wine for another customer. Unlike other customers, we did not find the noise level discouraging, so I can't add that to the list. I would recommend Fin to friends, but would caution them about the odd seating and wine confiscation policies. Fin is at least on the right track; it's easier to correct bad service policies than it is to improve a bad kitchen. read more

Couldn't have found this experience more displeasing. I'm not sure which was worse; the multiple hairs found in my food, the chef's decision to change up the accompaniments served with the Shanghai lobster and shrimp, or the countless flies and nats buzzing around our unstable table for two. The night started off with my waiting for my byob wine refills (because that's how it works) and a mediocre Baratta appetizer special. With tomatoes that were definitely not ripe or from Jersey, this dish was accompanied by a pathetic sliver of Baratta not suited for a child. I ordered what I always order, without looking at the menu, not thinking twice about whether or not it would come out prepared in the same way as it has every time before. Low and behold it arrived in disguise. No crispy kale. No crispy fried things. In its place, sautéed spinach with a sweet tasting rice (not even similar to what I was familiar with). I'm sorry but creamy spicy doesn't work well with sweet in my book. I called the waitress over to ask what happened to the kale and the crispy things and she said, "oh yeah, it's served this way now" and claimed the menu stated that. I said, "ok, but I don't like this rice. What else do u have, I'll pay for it?" She said, "the only other side we have is the Thai fried rice." I said, "I'll have that." Ten minutes later the Thai rice arrives in a half of a pineapple and looks frightening similar to the rice on my plate. Sure enough it's the same dang rice - only difference, they threw some shrimp in. I said, "this tastes exactly like the rice on my plate; is it the same rice?" She says, "let me ask." She returns and confirms, "basically, it's the same." I guess the wait staff isn't expected to be knowledgable on the food being served therefore the patrons should expect them to know nothing about the food they are talking about. In fact, the staff has always been the worst part of the Fin experience, but you could chalk that off when the food is good. Not anymore! I told her I wasn't paying for this rice and asked her to remove it from the bill. I then began to finish my lobster and shrimp, only to find several hairs buried underneath. I was willing to take the blame, assuming it was mine, but after I put the last piece of shrimp in my mouth, with more hair attached, I was convinced I had nothing to do with the garnishing. Needless to say we left disgusted and disappointed. I told the hostess about our experience. In her unprofessional manner, she looked at me pathetically and said, "I'm sorry" several times as if I told her my hamster died. Never losing eye contact to look for the manager. Let me add that our first experience, just about a year and a half ago, was so fantastic I personally sought out the owner to commend him on his food. He couldn't be more grateful. Not sure what has happened since then. Fortunately for him, he was nowhere to be found today. Tonight's experience was one of the worst we've ever had, and we will not return. read more

We've been here twice and both times were served by Ron, who has the worst attitude of any server I've ever encountered. His behavior on our first visit was the most memorable part of the meal. He had a condescending manner, along with being snappy and working hard to give the impression that serving was completely beneath his dignity. As the food on our first visit was good, we returned last night. Unfortunately, Ron was also serving our section. We had questions about some menu items and his response was to roll his eyes, tell us both things we were deciding between we're "good" and snap that he'd give us more time before turning on his heel and walking off while we were still speaking. That's just one example of behavior that also includes banging down cutlery without eye contact and rudely reaching in front of our faces to refill glasses while we were in conversation without saying excuse me. When our response to "how is dinner" was that the pasta we had asked about was watery and bland, he shrugged and walked off. I could go on. I certainly won't be making a third visit to Fin. read more

We had a good overall experience at this nice, little BYOB. I ordered the grilled romaine salad, which came out very quickly, and the 7 spice tuna. The salad was satisfying and the tuna was quite good as well. The soba noodles served with the tuna were the highlight of the dinner for me. The prior reviews about the noise were spot on, but it did not detract enough from the evening to lower the rating. read more

We had a horrible experience here. My husband and I went Saturday night for a rare date night. Upon arrival, we were basically ignored because a larger party of 6 was arriving behind us. When we were finally showed to our seat, we couldn't hear each other over the loudness of the venue. We had to scream across the table and every other word was what? The waiter dropped in on us a couple times, to pour wine, recite the specials, and each time we screamed we're ready to order!! But he vanished. We even turned off the light on the lit menus to signal we were ready and when the waiter snuck up on us, he turned our lights back on and left. We finally had enough of being ignored and left, leaving our bottle of wine behind (not to mention a $20 (!!) corkage fee for Friday and Saturday night). We were not looking to waste a child free night out on screaming to hear each other and being ignored. We ventured over to summit house around the corner and had a great dinner. read more

The food was good, quite good in some cases, but it doesn't compensate for the imperious attitude of the chef, poor service and horrible acoustics. I was hosting three business colleagues and as we waited for one to arrive I asked if we could order appetizers and we were told "no, the chef prefers that you order your appetizers and entrees at the same time." After further communication with the server and hostess and nearly 30 minutes, the chef finally agreed to an exception. We were a party of four trying to order multiple appetizers and later, four of their very expensive entrees at 7:30 on a weekday evening when the restaurant had several open tables that remained so for the night. In addition to this high and mighty attitude, the service was lacking which is unfortunate because the white wine is kept in a communal ice bucket on top of a tall piece of furniture. Several times during a dinner that I was hosting, I had to get up and fetch our wine. To top things off, my colleagues and I couldn't hear each other well enough to accomplish what we set out to do. It was impossible to hear the people across the table and you practically had to lean in to the face of the person sitting next to you to hear what they said. Fine for a romantic encounter, but rather uncomfortable for business. Save your money and your time. read more

Before we decided to go to this restaurant I read that the food was good but the treatment by the host was appalling. I took it in stride. We had reservations for 6:45 and our 2 of us had come on time, a friend who was joining us was parking. We were told that they would not seat us (the restaurant was about 1/2 full) and that we had a 6:30 reservation so we had to be out by 8:30. My friend who was parking got a text saying that they would give away our table if she was late. Before we sat I made sure that the 6:45 reservation was confirmed we would have another 15 minutes before we were thrown out. Also, they took our wine (it is a BYOB) and were reluctant to give it back to us when one of the bottles was unopened and we wanted it back. Food was good but they need to treat their customers with respect. read more

Last night we ate at Fin and were very disappointed. Our waitress was overtly disgruntled and impatient, and only selectively nice to 2 of the 4 people in our party. I'm gluten free, and she had very little to recommend. Finally I chose a grilled Branzino then she came back to inform me they were out, then pushed something easy. The food was fine, but for the price, I would expect much better service and less pre-prepared food (I was told ALL the non plain dishes had flour in them and sauces are pre-made and can't be altered, which is frankly odd when one's paying $30+ a plate). The icing on the cake was I ordered a decaf latte and am 99% sure it was not decaf, as I was up all night in the way only caffeine would do. Needless to say, I'm not running back. read more

Went with my husband on a Saturday night. The raw bar was great. We got the tower, with shrimp, clams and oysters and they were fresh and delicious. For our meal he got a fra diavolo special with pasta, shrimp and lobster. It was ok, the sauce was great but the lobster was dry and over cooked. We got the fried rice in a pineapple-delicious and Brussels sprouts with pancetta. The pancetta was rock hard and the sprouts were just buttery or oily and needed something else-maybe vinegary or spicy? I got the tuna tartare app for a meal-it was good. For dessert we got s'mores, which was also good. So it's hard to judge this meal, because much of the meal (mainly the part that had to be cooked) wasn't very good, but the fish was good and fresh. We plan to go back and just get oysters and raw bar items and I think that will be perfect. Also, FYI, service was great but the place is tight and loud. read more

My wife and I were looking for a local restaurant that had a nice selection of oysters and seafood appetizers. We found Fin in Summit. We arrived just after 5:00 pm on a Wednesday night and asked to sit at the bar area. The place is BYOB but if you forget there is a little liquor store around the corner. As we sat down we were greeted by our waiter Brian who was very professional but extremely friendly. We were very lucky to have been seated right in front of the oyster shucking station at the bar and Kelly, I'll call him the oyster professor, gave us a great background on each type offered that day. He was extremely pleasant, knowledgable, and made our night there very comfortable, sort of like we were regulars. After we finished sampling 18 oysters we were looking for another appetizer, since we were not having dinner and Kelly recommended the Planked Octopus, which was extremely tender with a hint of the smoked flavor sided with two great fresh salads. We loved the experience and Kelly made it that much better, it was like we were hosts of a food network show and knew the background of all of our meals. Definitely not our last time back and will sample further next time, and we will definitely sit back at the bar and speak with Kelly. read more

The meal we had here was truly excellent. Charred octopus, fried calamari, and lobster & shrimp "Shanghai style" were all amazing. Lobster roll sliders were ok. Good sized portions, which is unusual for a pricey fish place. While the food was a hit, our service was AWFUL. From the second we sat down, 15 minutes prior to our reservation time, our waiter was rushing us to order and finish everything. We said we were celebrating a milestone birthday, but that didn't have an impact. He was also constantly hovering and it made all of us uncomfortable. Later on he said, "Take your time because at this point you have the table for the night." He also spilled a good amount of ice water on my hand, purse, and napkin, said, "Sorry," and walked away without offering another napkin or any assistance. I do plan to go back but I will definitely ask for a different waiter if we are unlucky to sit in his section again. read more

I was able to get an early reservation at Fin and was excited to try it because I love fish and have frequented the Blue Water Grill in NYC and Atlantic Grill. I ordered the mahi-mahi which was done to perfection. I love mahi-mahi and it is hard to find it in restaurants around here. I also ordered the mixed green salad which was a big portion. My husband ordered the special steak house salad which included crumbled blue cheese and bacon. He had the grilled salmon which includes a large portion of escarole and beans. Many customers were ordering oysters and they have many varieties. My only criticism is the tables for 2 people are in the middle of the floor. My husband was knocked into everytime a waiter or server walked by. I can imagine in the winter it is difficult with winter coats on the chairs. It is fine for an early reservation in the summer but I can see with the other reviews it can be noisy. read more

I have eaten here and in their sister restaurant in Moniclair many times. Last night was such a great disappointment. We were 8 people and there were on only several other diners in the restaurant. Our server seemed extremely nervous and I thought he understood me when I explained my grandson had nut and sesame seed allergies. Yet, when the bread basket came, the flat bread was all sesame seeds. We had to ask to have our wine glasses filled and when my daughter asked for a butter knife, we got a dish of butter. The entrees were not prepared to the customary standard of this restaurant. The special was totally bland and the "quick fried" Branzino was so over done, it was like sawdust. I don't know if the regular staff was on vacation or the chef was just not paying attention. My husband did speak to the server about this and he apoligized but, when the server told the manager, he just continued eating his dinner. This is the only time we have ever had a bad meal or have been dissatisfied with this restaurant. read more

First timer 1/4/14. We had seven guests (6:15 reservation) the four of us we were on time but the first three arrived 5 minutes before us and were not allowed to sit at the reserved empty table for the seven of us. My first impression of the Summit version of Fin was it was smaller than expected, darker and a lot noisier - (Parking is very spotty in Summit). Not to get into everything we had but it is enough to say it was all good to excellent. We had the grilled octopus app and it was smokey/grilly and tender. Lobster, truffle mac and cheese was delicious but could have had a touch more cream so that the sauce could have stuck to the good amount of lobster in it, We all enjoyed our entrées - I need to say that the fish of the fish and chips was moist and batter coating crispy and not too thick. For all of us the chips were the disappointment - not true chips but McDonalds fries - not appropriate for this place at all. Desserts were good. Bottom line is maybe this is not a good place to go with more than 4 people since it was impossible to hear guests on the far side of the long table. Service was pretty good - food to the table times was fair. 2 apps, 7 entrées and 3 desserts + a few coffees. I feel a little pricey at $288 total for the 7 of us (it is a BYOB joint) - we left $350.00 or $50.00 per person at the end of the night. read more

a restuarant gone bad. this small fish house in summit nj is now a total avoid. they will not let you sit at your table until all guests arrive then proceed to rush you through dinner as they try and turn tables 3 times a night. the food is slapped on your table picked up way to quickly and bang your out the door! the management is rude inflexible and only care about how many meals they can serve each night. please stay away! just there 2/21/15 read more
