We have been coming to this Garland District diner for quite a while now. It happens to be a convenient walk from our house which is a plus. We've always had good service and when its slow the cooks even take the time to say hi and thank us for our business. The menu is pretty straight forward diner fare with breakfast all day plus burgers, sandwiches, and shakes. Of course there's more but that's the gist of it. We've never had a bad meal and not anything out of this world great either. I guess that was never my expectation here. I would call it middle of the road to slightly above par diner food. It is really just a nice place to have a decent meal in a cool atmosphere with family and friends. If you want something that is top notch order a shake. They are really, really good. read more

I had lunch about 1:3O on Sat. the 19th. The reuben sandwich and salad were good, but it the sandwich was soooooo salty. This from someone who salts her buttered toast! The saltiness came from the corned beef, and the waittress explained that does happen sometimes. Then I heard a cook behind the counter loudly mutter something about never knowing what you're going to get when something's brined. Prety unprofessional in my opinion. The service was good and one waittress extremely personable and helpful, the other one pretty surly and abrupt. Oh, and the ventilation was pretty ineffective.....had to come home and put everything I was wearing in the dryer to get out the cooking odors. OK place but not planning to repeat the experience. Hands down the best chicken fried steak with country gravy on the planet!! Everything else on the menus is also very good but I have a hard time branching out because the chicken fried steak is so good! Service is always friendly and quick. The place is clean, including the bathrooms! 50's style classic diner. Small and cozy. Coffee is very good. Parking is rough so you have to typically find something at around the corner and walk in, as there are only about 3-4 spots in front on the restaurant on Garland and no backside parking. read more

Good place for one to two people. They get their hands all over the food and don't use gloves! Very disappointed that they no longer have the pumpkin waffles. Also, in the the orangesicle ice cream soda, they used store bought orange juice. Service was great, but, the pancakes are extremely heavy. The only thing that made me continue eating them is that the butter tasted good w/ them. I wish they cooked the hash browns much crisper and they shredded them way way too thick... I probably would come back, but only for a light snack. That is the reason why I'm rating this restaurant for three stars. read more

I love the historical aspect of this little cafe, who hasn't seen the movie Benny and Joon, am I right? I have thing for Johnny Depp. Sooooo anyway.... the portion sizes are always really small for the price. I've always gone when there were only one or two other tables and it seems to take a while to make an order of some French toast. We had been going there for 2 years every Saturday. It was our favorite place to eat. Hope was our favorite waitress, and it was a great sit down spot for our family. I'm rating them one star because after an attempt to make a take out order, and talking (being scolded) by a waitress by the name of Amy, it left a very bad taste in my mouth. I get times are hard for everyone, but it's no reason to treat people like crap for no reason. From the jump the tone in her voice was very callous and she really showed me what it was like to be talked to like I was a meaningless p.o.s. After attempting to bring the exchange between Amy and I to the owners attention, he simply didn't care and said "it's just the way she is, and she can come across that way". I've been a waitress myself for ten years and no matter what kind of crap day I was having, did I ever treat someone the way I was treated. And for the that, Ferguson's you get a one star from me after that interaction. Amy needs to work on her customer service. Just awful ! The service was oh so very rude and the hash-browns were worse. We sent them back and instead of apologizing and offering to replace them, she turned and chucked them in the trash can and walked off. Then funny enough, we had to remind her to take them off the bill! This was such a great place back in the '70s.( I know...get over it!) Who remembers the peanut butter pie ! To die for! read more

A vintage diner with a long Spokane history. Even though it was renovated in 2012 after a fire, it still maintains the look and feel of the 40's - 50's. The servers were very friendly and make sure you are satisfied. The chicken fried steak was excellent with a crispy crust and moist meat. The only short coming were the hash browns which were a little over done and not real hot, but the gravy smothering the plate put the dish over the top. read more

Loved the fun atmosphere, as well as the historical aspects of the restaurant and building. Not to mention that the service was outstanding (thank you, Michelle!) and the food was very good. We tried a pretty good variety of dishes in our party, including chicken fried steak with gravy (best I've had in Spokane), biscuits, veggie benedict, patty melt with fries, hash browns, rye bread (comes from Franz and tastes fresh-baked); and of course, lots of eggs to go around. It was fun to watch the gentleman cooking everything and somehow keeping it all straight on his own. The food was served within seconds of being plated, so everything was hot and delicious. Also, the Garland district is a fun little area that invites you to walk around the shops to work off some of that breakfast. This one is a definite "Go"! You won't be disappointed. read more

I loved this place growing up! The food and the atmosphere used to be the best around. We went in today and it was anything but. The biscuits & gravy was lukewarm pre-made "gravy" and the biscuits tasted pre-frozen and doughy. The scrambled eggs were dry, tasteless rubbery strips. Everything on this dish was flavorless and disappointing. At least the bacon was good? My boyfriend got the eggs Benedict...we watched in disgust/horror as the cook pulled the hollandaise from the MICROWAVE in a STYROFOAM container that was blistering at the sides. I should also mention that the cook was touching everything and didn't have so much as gloves on. Even the coffee was a flop. Won't be coming back and will not be recommending. One warm afternoon in the late 1940's, a young man rode up to Ferguson's Cafe on his motorcycle. He was there to meet his friends, one of which worked at the cafe as a dishwasher. As he stepped through the back door of the restaurant that led into the kitchen, his eyes rested on the scene directly in front of him: a stunning pair of legs, adorned with seamed stockings and kitten-heel pumps, and a plaid skirt resting just below the knees. Nearly unable to stop gawking at those perfect set of gams, his eyes moved upward to the face of the woman who owned them - 16 year old Marian. My grandmother. And thus began my grandparent's romance, which eventually led to my mother's birth, which eventually led to...me! As you can imagine, it's no surprise that I love Ferguson's. Not only does it hold a special, sentimental place in my heart, but the atmosphere is fun and the food is fantastic. The thing about Ferguson's food is that it's...fresh. The meat patties are hand-formed, the potato wedges are cut on-site, the waffle batter is mixed up while you wait. If the current owner is in, he'll chat with you while your food cooks - how great is that? Sure, the food can be a bit greasy at times. But they're not cookin' with margarine here, so that's just how it's gonna be. Heck, they've been doing this for over 50 years - I think they have it down. And! With hearty breakfasts and "blue plate specials"...it's almost as if you've been transported back to the 50's yourself! Also, if you didn't already know this, this is the diner where a couple of scenes from Benny & Joon were filmed (Johnny Depp's dancing dinner rolls, specifically). So if you're in the neighborhood, pop on in to Ferguson's and grab a bite. And on the way out, take a look at my grandmother's photo on the wall. The black and white one, near the windows. I've been here a few times for breakfast and have always left happy. I can't really speak to their burgers and shakes, but they definitely have solid breakfast offerings. What can I say? I'm a big fan of hashbrowns and Ferguson's has some nice hashbrowns. (You can even get fried onions or country gravy added to those fried potatoes. Eeek!) The omelettes are decent, nothing super-fancy, but they get the job done. And you'll definitely get your money's worth portion-wise. The decor is retro cool, and the wait staff is friendly and fast. But be warned, that although they have booths, tables, and counter seating, Ferguson's isn't big. If you're hankering for breakfast, get there early because it fills up fast. And yes, Ferguson's has appeared in several movies, but what's neater than that is that they have old menus adorning the walls by the bathrooms. Check them out and be amazed at what you could get for 45 cents in 1950. read more

The service was okay. It was the food that was lacking--incredibly. Look, I'm not a food snob at ALL, but they really need to get some people that know how to cook. Typically I gauge a place on how good their pancakes are--and unfortunately, theirs was not at all decent--thin, crisp and they had an off taste. My food was cold (I had the bacon omelette), the omelette was practically a scramble. The eggs are likely substitute eggs and if they aren't then they need to scramble them better before cooking them. My toast was hard. Basically, super cheap food at not a cheap price. How hard is it to make a decent American breakfast? Not very. I want to like Fergies because it has a lot of potential. A lot like other things in Spokane--it looks great from the outside but once you actually experience, you realize that it's nothing spectacular and is really disappointing.
