RAMEN IN SAN LEANDRO?!?! Ramen place at a sushi place is usually bad news...but hey why not. I ordered the tonkatsu ramen and my coworker always gets their sushi. I tried their sushi before and it was actually pretty good for a small fast-food sushi place like this. I call it "fast food" because there are no servers - you order and pay the cashier in the front and wait for your number. I would give it 3.5 stars - but being it's probably the best I've had in the east bay, I'll be nice and round up :) Now this tonkatsu ramen is also the first ramen to actually serve tonkatsu lol. Usually it's just the both tonkatsu and they add chasu or some type of pork, but adding the deep fried tonkatsu was good! How they're not crunchy but soak in the broth - yum! It also came with the normal black mushrooms - very different from other ramen places with their normal shiitake mushrooms. So I guess I would say this ramen is actually very white washed - but they were at least successful at it :) since the broth and noodles weren't bad and the fried tonkatsu on top were good. I used to love this place! The sushi is very cheap so don't expect something super amazing but it's delicious for what you're paying for. The lion king roll and seafood yaki udon are my personal favorite. After not coming for about a year, I stopped by yesterday for a togo order and found hair in the container when I got home and felt really sick that night. I will probably go here again just because it's fast, cheap, and delicious but will be cautious. read more

My friend introduced me to Fat Fish Sushi a few years ago. Ever since then I've been hooked. So much to choose from, cheap, huge roll portions, and friendly staff. Okay, I changed my mind about this place and I'm giving it an extra star. Why? Because they've added more rolls onto their menu which makes ordering even more time consuming, but their visuals of the sushi rolls helps! I like seeing my food before I order it and a lot of the rolls look pretty yummy! I've been here rather frequently for the super cheap sushi and I've found some favorites as well. I love the way they make their 49ers roll. I'm not a fan of the 49ers, I'm an Oakland Raider fan at heart, but this roll is made with thinly sliced salmon and just enough lemon to give you that refreshing taste which I absolutely love. I also like the Big Salmon roll and found that the two sauces - the orange and the darker colored sauce (i'm not sure what it is) - are delicious together. Their service is excellent by the way. You get your sushi just the way you want it. If you want more crunchy panko style bread crumbs on top of your sushi, or if you want extra sauce or sauce on the side, they'll accommodate it with no extra charge. Short Story: A good and cheap place for Japanese food! Long Story: I came here with a friend for dinner on a Wednesday night and it was about 50 percent full. This place has a different setup. When you walk in, you order at the front...and then you sit down. You get a number and the food is brought to you. I waited about 15 minutes for the food, which I thought was a bit long. The house salad and miso soup was about average. The salmon teriyaki and sushi was pretty decent. You cant beat the prices anywhere else and the portions are generous. The only other suggestion I have is that the bathrooms are a bit dirty. Maybe it was just that day.. Verdict: The food is good and I'll be back. read more

I have been a loyal customer of this establishment for years. I have referred countless friends and family members and until today had never had any real issues. However, due to the service I received today and the dismissive, condescending attitude of the staff (specifically Tanya, who was working the late afternoon/evening shift), Fat Fish will no longer receive my patronage or recommendation. I had an issue with my order that required me to make an additional trip to the restaurant. Tanya was extremely dismissive of the inconvenience caused by my having to return to the restaurant as I live 20 minutes away. I asked if I could speak to the manager to which she replied 'he ain't here.' None of the staff seemed phased by my dissatisfaction and no one offered the slightest apology. Once I finally received my order the food was subpar and cold. I ordered a Bento Box with chicken teriyaki and tempura. The rice was cold and the chicken teriyaki was dry. I was extremely disappointed by the food but I was most disappointed by the bad attitude of the staff and the careless manner in which they handled my situation. read more

Wow...WORST SUSHI EVER! I'm pretty understanding but DAMN...this was BAD. The Fried Oysters were covered in a batter that was fried so hard that biting into them Hurt My Teeth!!! I had to take the fried batter off & just eat the tiny smelly oyster. And the Salmon Skin Roll...the salmon skin was clearly too old & once again fried so hard it was too tough to chew! The Crunchy Roll was tolerable. And the "Lobster Roll" didn't even have real Lobster on it. Hopefully they fix these problems but by the looks of the place I seriously doubt they care or will. They get two stars for fast service and a cheap menu. Otherwise, the fish doesn't taste fresh. In fact, we didn't eat our sashimi salad because the sashimi was so fishy and mushy. They have a large menu, but many of the rolls have the same items in them, nothing really unique. Rolls averaged $7-10. The cuts of fish were small and didn't cover much of the top of the sushi rolls. The restaurant was hot and muggy, and the fish was room temperature. We left half our rolls on the table, which I NEVER do at sushi restaurants. If u want cheap and FRESH sushi, try GETA in Piedmont (Oakland). read more

I mean you have to get your own water, and there isn't really any service if you dine in but I keep going back. It's pretty small and casual. The sushi is cheap and pretty good. I like the pink lady, lion king roll, and others. I may grab it to go or eat it there. It gets the job done. I like the affordable prices. I wish I could give it a higher rating but yes, the parking is not spacious, the service staff isn't super friendly, you have to get your own water, it looks decent enough inside, etc. It's good yummy cheap sushi. Don't come here expecting 5 star sushi or 5 star service -- you're getting what you pay for. I come here when I'm broke & craving sushi. I was definitely skeptical the first time coming here & eating their assorted sashimi platter -- I kept thinking about how I might have just signed myself up for a shart attack but to my surprise, I didn't even get a stomach ache. I've been here at least 10 times more after that -- both to-go & dined in -- & I haven't gotten sick once! I usually get the Pink Roll which has a really yummy sauce on top & the Ichibang because it has eel & hamachi. Add the miso soup & you'll pay $22.77 TOTAL for two yummy rolls & a soup! Soooo worth it, in my opinion. It's usually fast here, but today I waited exactly 25 minutes from my ticket time for my food to arrive, hence the 3-star rating. I would have given them a 3.5/4 but today affected my rating for fast & cheap sushi. Good thing I don't catch feelings, I just catch detail. I'll still come back. read more

Still edible sushi but if you're into sashimi or nigiri, I definitely don't recommend this place. The sashimi and nigiri had barely any taste to it. Not necessarily a fishy taste but more of where I can't taste anything besides the wasabi and soy sauce. The salmon sashimi was the most decent but it's cut up in such a huge slice that it was a little harder to eat. To be fair, they're known more for their sushi rolls. This is the ideal sushi restaurant for people who don't like raw fish. This is the place for the people who enjoys the crispy this and crunchy that type rolls over a fresh piece of sashimi. In my opinion, the rolls are always poorly constructed. The avocado slices on the rolls are always disproportional. The structure never holds up and they always fall apart before you can even pick them up with your chopsticks. I usually try not to get any raw fish here because the freshness is questionable. Go the safer route and get simple things like chicken teriyaki or California roll. The only thing that Fat Fish got going for them are the prices. People love them because they can order a crunchy roll and a teriyaki bowl for around $10. At other restaurants you can't even get a roll for $10. You can get a lot of food here for a good price. The model is quantity over quality. The food is acceptable but nothing to rave about. It's like a Japanese fast food restaurant. You order at the front counter, take a number and go seat yourself. The only service you get is when you order and when the food is delivered to your table. Want a glass of water? Go pour it out yourself at the water dispenser. Weird experience. The staff is pretty rude. I walked in behind a guy also ordering "to-go". I waited behind him the whole time looking up at the menu, this being my first time. He walked away and I had my order ready and waited for some indication the order taking cashier was ready for me. She just stood their staring blankly ahead like a statue. I waited for something, like "hi is this to go"? or "are you ready to order?", or even "my underwear is going right up my crack", anything. So after an awkward period of time I spoke up saying something clever like "are you ready for me?" and you'd think I'd just farted she looked at me with such disgust. Anyway, today was a hot day and the last thing you want on a piping hot day is a limp room temperature poke salad and a tasteless pale sticky warm sushi roll.
