This little sushi spot sits tucked in that strip mall next to the 24 Hour Fitness on Floresta, and honestly I only walked in because I was already in the parking lot after the gym. I usually don't mess with strip mall sushi at all, but this one surprised me. Everything was fresh. The hamachi was soft and clean. The masago was popping like it was supposed to. They even gave me extra ginger and wasabi without me saying a word, which is the kind of small detail I appreciate because most places act stingy with it. I grabbed the Tammy's Treat roll and a couple pieces of nigiri, and it all hit the way it should for a quick to go lunch. Driven by this place on my way to work, so decided to stop in for lunch. It wasn't busy. I order spicy chicken and a san leandro roll. The spicy chicken came out with a plethera of rice under it and nothing else, not even two sprigs of brocoli for color. However it did come with Miso soup and the traditional iceberg salad with the Kewpie/sesame seed dressing. The San Leandro roll was good and was topped with crawfish. If you a need to get a quick fix of japanese food, this is ok, but if you really want traditional Japanese probably try another place. read more

So how do I start this review ? Well, we arrived and no lines or customers just us on mother's day We were craving for Japanese food and our normal go to place closer to home was busy so I remembered years ago best sashimi place called Rock n Roll sushi and this is why I have to make this review to give them honest feedback and so we can return and get a better experience. Finally took our order and we asked for tea. Tea was served luke warm. Replaced 5 minutes later and was good :) Server came back and dropped the dish we will use and OMG ! She placed it on our table stacked as shown on the photo. Dish was cracked and sharp on the edges old and not appealing at all and the small dipping sauce dish were the blue ones for Chinese food lol. The ginger was dry and wasabi was so so. While waiting and tasting the 3 dishes we ordered, the other server was killing small flying bugs and flies with an electronic fly swatter and jt was making zapping noises. Then she was sweeping the floor with the broom a d dust pan leaning on the entryway of the sushi bar and out in the open. Food was terrible and hope they improve it for other customers. Read along. Food arrived and the sushi was placed on an old wooden dish and by the looks it was not appealing and hope no bacteria in it. We will find out in a few hours but so far we are okay :).. The sushi rice is not Japanese way at all please improve. Try it and see. The seaweed they use on the unagi hand roll and california roll was chewy like rubber and wont cut no snap to it while chewing etc. . (How do you mess up these two basic dishes) The agedashi tofu was okay so kudos but ! Yes, but again. It tasted more Chinese than Japanese including the sauce. We've been coming here for years. It's always a solid option. The rolls and quality might have dropped slightly throughout the years. But we always come back for the bento boxes. The amount of teriyaki chicken or katsu they give you is always so generous. Rock & Roll sushi has the most value for what you pay. I'm not mad at the amount I pay for with the amount of food I get. There wasn't a lot of people eating inside the restaurant when we went, but there were a lot of to-go orders. Not the fanciest or highest grade food, but just a really solid is what it is neighborhood sushi spot! read more

If you like quantity over quality then this place is for you. We got the teriyaki chicken "donburi" but it was basically chicken on top of rice, not donburi, no broth cooked with eggs & onions. Haven't been here in years and honestly would come back again for dinner! My boyfriend and I were really satisfied with the services we got and were surprised about how generous the servings were. I got the 3 piece venti box with teriyaki chicken, mixed tempura, and Alaska roll. My boyfriend got the ton katsu entree which has more than enough to katsu for him and I. One thing I would add would be that it may not be the best sushi spot I've had but it hits the spot. Dinning inside is best for smaller parties 2-4 people. This used to be one of my favorite sushi restaurants both for the food and for the great customer service. Today I went in to place an order to go and the service from the young man was cold, rushed, unfriendly, borderline rude and very lackluster. No "hello" and definitely no "thank you". Some of my rolls were so loose, they kept falling apart, and I had to literally grab them with my fingers and push it in my mouth before they crumbled into small pieces! I keep reading reviews that there has been a change in ownership over the last couple of years, so maybe this is why things have gone downhill. The two stars are for the rolls that didn't crumble and tasted good as well as the provision of a lot of soy sauce packets. Stopped here during lunch for the first time. What attracted me to this place is their prices. Bento boxes start at $13 for two items and ramen starts at $12. That is cheap compared to other Sushi/ramen places in San Leandro/San Lorenzo. I got the two item bento which included miso soup, salad, veggie egg roll and choice of entrees. Keep in mind some entrees charge an additional $1. I picked the teriyaki salmon and shrimp tempura roll. My salmon was delicious. The teriyaki sauce is on the sweeter side. The shrimp tempura roll had cucumber inside and unagi sauce on top. I was not a fan of the unagi sauce. It tasted different from other unagi sauce I've had. The egg roll was not good. However the head of their Ama-Ebi Nigiri could be crisper. My all-tike favorite is the Hamachi Carpaccio, but for those who aren't into spice I recommend removing the jalapeños. Their green tea tempura ice cream is refreshing and just as I requested, with a light batter. I do wish they had more flavors to choose from, though. On the downside, I asked for a Chardonnay but suspect I was served plum wine instead, or perhaps they needed to open a new bottle. The owners son was very attentive and got all the orders right. This place has very generous portions and affordable prices. The main downsides are that the flavor isn't there and the fish isn't the best. This is the second time I've eaten at Rock & Roll Sushi since it changed ownership. I ordered my usual bento box with beef teriyaki, gyoza, and Inari. The beef teriyaki was tough as the quality of the beef was poor. The salad was watery as they didn't drain the water before placing the lettuce in the bento box. The Inari tasted old as the tofu skin and rice had little flavor and were dry, not moist. The gyoza and egg roll were so-so. Both times I ordered the same dish thinking it was just an off day the first time I ordered the bento box. Nope...the beef teriyaki bento box was just as awful as the first time. My family ordered sushi rolls which I don't eat so I am not rating the sushi rolls but will post the pictures of what they look like. They all ordered bento boxes, too. The chicken teriyaki was better tasting and was soft. However, I felt the chicken had been pounded to make it more tender. The consensus of my family was that their bento boxes were so-so. Overall, our bill came to over $200.00. It was a disappointing dinner, especially for the price. On top of that, they added a service fee (without our knowledge) to our bill. I have come here many times to order take out for my family. Over the phone, they usually say it's about a 20-25 min wait. That's usually accurate on the wait time. The rolls are always packed with stuff and are usually a normal sized roll. I was never disappointed at the taste of the rolls. My favorites are their speciality rolls and soft shell appetizer though I do have to say that my only gripe (and with sushi it can be a rather big one) is that their rolls differ in freshness and quality. My experience this time exceeded my expectations in comparison to my last visit for takeout here. My family and I visited for dinner and did sit-down. All of us ordered our own bento meal and a few rolls to share. To our surprise, our bentos came LOADED with the main meat entrees including the chicken teriyaki and I'm not kidding you when I say this - THREE slabs of tonkatsu! They also give you one veggie egg roll, which is awesome. The tonkatsu I'll admit was a little dry, but it was breaded excellently and the teriyaki chicken was absolutely tender! My mom wasn't the hugest fan of her beef teriyaki, but I still thought it was pretty good. They probably could've cooked it a little less though to make it more tender I think. I wouldn't recommend the short ribs though - you may as well just get the beef teriyaki because it's basically the same thing without the bones. The tempura was a little over-fried, but still tasted fine to me. My high satisfaction for this experience mostly comes from the surprising portions and the attentive service with making sure our tea / water was always full, and just that we were good at our table. The only thing I feel they should note somewhere (maybe they do and we missed it? didn't see it on the menu or shown in the restaurant...) is that they automatically add a service charge. Not sure if that's only for a larger group, but it's honestly a bit annoying when restaurants don't disclose that ahead of time. Parking is hit or miss, but there is usually parking, if you do not mind parking further away. Not much service, as I ordered to go on this particular visit. I ordered the California Hand Roll & Salmon Hand Roll, Sake Maki, and Sake Nigiri (about $28). It took about 15 - 20 minutes for my order, which was not too bad, since I ordered my to go order over the phone. The salmon portion was good, but it did not taste the freshest though, the imitation crab for the hand roll tasted a bit fishy as well, and the seaweed for the hand rolls was tough and tasted stale. read more

My family and I went here yesterday and the place has gone downhill. I started coming here years ago. It started off good but then it became inconsistent so I stopped coming for a while. I decided to give them another try because I like the place, but it wasn't that great. I stopped coming here for over a year and decided to try it again because my nephew said the last time they were here the food was good and the portion size was good. Last night was not the case. Everyone ordered the bento box. My chicken was lukewarm and the people that ordered the salmon it was not grilled that well. The salmon skin wasn't crispy like it should be. The tempura was hot, but it wasn't tempura batter. It was more like regular batter. The floor in the restaurant is either oily or just slippery because of the type of material it is and the bathroom is disgusting. I spent $97 plus tip for four bento boxes. I got the floresta roll : 5 out of 5 I really love the solidness of it and the presentation of it made me guilty eating it . Fried Calamari was really fried octopus lol. It was still good to be completely honest but should be corrected on the menu . Rainbow roll : 4.1 out of 5 I love the roll and I know fish and other things can't ever be 100 percent consistent. Felt like we could of got just a tad more of the white fish on that roll but to be honest I was impressed with how quick they got this out . These are the hugest bento boxes I've ever seen and at such great value too. You can choose either two or three item but I almost always get the three item. Chicken Katsu and chicken teriyaki are a must. The chicken Katsu is crispy on the outside (batter not too heavy) and juicy on the inside. The chicken teriyaki is tender and flavorful. For my third item, I either get the alaska roll or try another item. You can get beef teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, bbq short ribs, tempura, tonkatsu, gyoza, nigiri, sashimi, etc. It also comes with miso soup, rice, salad, and an eggroll (if you dine in). Their hot tea is also very satisfying on those cold nights. It can get quite busy on weekend evenings, but once you're able to order, the food comes out pretty quickly.
