I got takeout from Joy Sushi. It was ready pretty quick, which was very nice. It's a smaller location right next to the Target. Okay so first I want to thank joy sushi for trying to accommodate my medical inability to eat rice. They made my rolls without it for me, and I know it can be difficult to do. But they tried! And they were really sweet about it. Their service was some of the best I have had when it comes to my food restrictions. So it makes me sad when I say, the food looked bimb, but just was not good. My Lambada roll was so salty (the crab was salty) so I wasn't able to dip it soy sauce or it made it eye twitchingly saltier. My wife ordered two rolls. While one look amazing, it was just lacking in flavor. The other roll she had was deep fried with tempura batter. It was MASSIVE it size. But once she tried to pick it up, it literally looked like it deflated. It went flat and she had to use a plastic for (all that was available) to eat it. We purchased a canned soda from their cold case since the soda fountain was out of order, the soda still, wasn't very cold and we were handed small thin white plastic cups to pour our soda into to share. Again no ice since the fountain was broken. There was no music and they had maybe a total of 5 tables to use to dine so the one obnoxious family (not establishments fault) that was there, were sooo loud. It made even much more unenjoyable. New management/ownership, a recent change and not as good as it used to be. Really recent change, we ordered from here in late January and it was as good as usual but today it was a completely different experience. Rice was salty, take-out containers were broken, and quality of fish did not feel as fresh. I've been a fan of Joy Sushi since first going to their San Mateo location back in 2011. They've always had good sized portions (rolls and entrees) and their prices can't be beat! When they opened a location at Bayfair Mall, I was ecstatic to see an affordable fast casual Japanese spot open in the area. It seems like the owner is a woman, and she runs the entire show. Kudos to her! It's not easy running a business in this area of San Leandro. I've been witness to a little riffraff here and there. All that aside, the food is consistently good the 2 times I've been here. The fish they use for sushi rolls is fresh, and I appreciate that they offer more than just your usual bento boxes and rolls. Updated from 5 to 3. New ownership, which is fine, but the value decreased significantly. Rolls are now half the size for the same price. They said they have the same chef too, which means the size reduction was *deliberate*. The only reason I use to come was the portion size - now that these are nice-sushi-prices, I might as well go somewhere else for nice sushi, right? If they made the decision to skimp on portion size, what other things have they skimped on? Fish quality? Who knows. They got rid of their one differentiator, so not sure why I should go out of my way to return to Bay Fair just for this expensive sushi. Also, called in my order, and they had to hand it off to 3 different people who could not understand English. When I got there, the lady was very nice, though and had decent English. The miso soup is very nourishing. I have never dined in but the place looks clean. There is plenty of parking available. Joy Sushi is located in the Bayfair Center. Although this is not a busy plaza, parking may be hit or miss in this section, as they are right by Target. This spot is only consistent when the female employee is working - I only see her half the times I come here and honestly when I do not see her working as I walk in, I feel disappointed and want to change my mind, but I usually order ahead on the phone for pick up, so obviously, it is too late. Service is mostly good though, they are for the usually friendly and welcoming. I ordered my usual, which is their Sake Lover's Plate - it consists of salmon hand roll, salmon nigiri, salmon roll, and salmon sashimi for the sushi, and it comes with miso soup and salad on the side as well. I do not know why my food tasted more fishy and not as fresh when the female employee is not working, and every time I would order here when she is not here, I would end up with food poisoning from the sushi, which is probably like 3 times already, so I probably should just stop coming here altogether because it is not worth the 50/50 chance of her working or not when I come here. I've been coming here for awhile now. The food is usually pretty good and we've had much luck with them in terms of getting our order efficiently and also at a good price. Last night we went to eat at the restaurant, which was our first time doing so. We ordered our food first and then it was brought out. It included complimentary miso soup for me since my partner got miso soup with his bento box. My vegetable rolls tend to be fresh and worth it - the avocados are fresh and generous. The asparagus roll is also pretty good but it could use more seasoning or grilling or something to the vegetables. The bento boxes are usually pretty good. For dinner, it comes standard with tempura (which includes shrimp and thus is pretty generous), rice, salad, and miso soup. The salmon teriyaki is usually pretty good but sometimes it can be rubbery. The chicken teriyaki we stopped ordering because sometimes it can be rubbery. We've also ordered the rice bowls and udon here and it's usually pretty good. Can't go wrong with most of the dishes here. Overall we are happy to live next to this small mom and pop shop and we are happy to support them where we can. read more

I come to this restaurant for YEARS. However, looks like started yesterday they have a new management. When I arrived, the usual lady that greets me isn't there anymore, but still gave them a chance. Price went up drastically, when I saw it should have left but still stayed. Of course food isn't the same, but definitely not as good as before. With the price of the Bento which is ($24) you would think you will get a decent serving but nah. And I come here for my lunch break, waited for 35 minutes for my food- almost walked out because my lunch time is almost over. I had to rush to eat some of my food to make it on time to get back to work. Want to give 1 star, but feel so bad. I've eaten here several times and the food is fresh, prepared on time. I usually get take out but they do have a small seating area. This time I ordered the Poké Bowl with the mixed greens, tuna and salmon with umami sauce and white sauce. Ok,my mistake. They clearly say on the menu that the mixed greens are prepared with umami sauce, so I didn't need extra. Pair that with the fact that I didn't eat it as soon as i got home, it was a little soggy. But the fish was still delicious and i ate it all. *Just a reminder if you order the mixed greens. They give plenty of sauce. This little shop is located right next to Target inside Bay Fair mall. I came here after work when I was craving sushi. Service: The staff was patient and kind. You order on the counter and then. you sit down if you want to dine-in. Food: I ordered the 2 item dinner bento with teriyaki chicken and chicken katsu. It came with tempura, soup, salad and rice. The teriyaki chicken was cooked well and the chicken katsu was tender and very crispy. I thought this was pretty good for its price. I also got the Hella Hot roll. I thought this was okay. I ordered the Joy King roll to-go and I enjoyed that roll. I also ordered the beef bibimbap. It came in a very cute container. The top layer was the veggies and the bottom layer was the rice, beef and egg. I really liked this dish. It was presentable and delicious! I recommend coming here if you are in the area and craving sushi, especially after shopping at Target! You can order on the phone and then pick up after a Target trip! Quaint sushi joy in Bayfair Plaza right by Target. I think this a good place for what I categorize as "American Sushi" or sushi that focused on complex flavored, lots of sauce and bigger sized rolls. Came on quiet Friday for lunch with my S/O. My S/O loves the San Mateo location and was excited to try this one. This location is half service and does feel like it's designed for people are looking to eat and go. Not the most romantic place. There were a good amount of fish in my raw fish roll. Unagi don was good - unagi wasn't too fatty and had a good amount. Tempura was okay - nothing special but the shrimp was kind of mushy and thin. It's surprising to find a sushi spot at the mall next to Wingstop and Target, but here we are! We wanted to try a new spot and say hey why not here? We got Tempura Mix, Vege Sushi Roll, 1st roll, Joy King, and Crispy Roll. Basically a sampling of almost everything. The 1st roll is a regular sushi roll. The Joy King is basically a lion king, so that's baked. And the Crispy Roll is a deep fried roll. The quality is good, I wouldn't say the fish is super fresh, but it's good quality to compared to some other sushi joints. I ordered it to go btw, and I really liked that they clearly labeled which roll was which when they're in the same container. That's an extra brownie point because I've been to other places where they stack all the sushi in, and you're trying to figure out which one is which. All the rolls were good except the Crispy Roll. It's probably my preference and maybe I should have known going in and ordering that roll. But the roll was just too dry for me, and yes it's a deep fried roll so what should I expect right? I'm not going to knock down the restaurant for that. I just want to let whoever is reading this, that if you're thinking about a deep fried sushi. Maybe don't get it from here. My brother and I wanted to go in on sushi and so we were looking for party platters around our area. Luckily, Joy sushi had what we wanted and it was close, (Bayfair mall next to wingstop). We got the nigiri platter and several rolls. I personally liked the; Joy king - Pretty much their version of a lion king roll. Can never go wrong with that. Salmon was delicious on top and the sauce that they used for the roll overall was super on point, sweet but sweet enough where it complemented everything within the roll. Hella hot - deep fried salmon with several different fish and jalapeños on top along with their spicy house sauce and spicy mayo. There was a lot going on but each bite just made you want to eat more! Hamachi - My favorite fish for sushi. Yellow tail roll, nice and simple. Nigiri platter had several varieties of nigiri sushi and is great for trying a bunch of different nigiri items on their menu either by yourself or with others. Overall, solid spot! read more

My brother and I had been looking for the perfect place that serves sushi, and although this place seems small, it carries a variety of both fresh and warm dishes. From the moment you enter you are cheerfully greeted by someone, and the coolest thing is that the menu is the first thing you see on the right for you to check what you want before ordering. Once you are done ordering you can sit at any table that is available. Although the sign food is sushi, you can also find some popular Korean dishes. I have lost count of the times I have been there, but I remember trying the spicy tteokbokki, the bibimbap with its juicy meat, prawn and veggie crispy tempura, and the bento lunches accompanied by a hot cup of miso soup. I totally recommend ordering the Ebi Heaven sushi rolls. The magic gets real when you eat that deep fried prawn and ebi with their special sauce, all wrapped in a nice layer of soft rice and nori. The kimchi and seaweed that they sell as side dishes aren't bad, but I prefer to stick to the ginger that comes with the sushi. They also offer a variety of desserts, all packaged just in case you want to take them home. If you like eating a fluffy mini pancake or a roll covered with chocolate and cream filling, then make sure to leave some space for it. The place is clean and the environment is peaceful, almost homely. The vibe of the space makes you feel comfortable, making your experience there enjoyable whether you go alone or with family/friends.
