Lion King Special Roll (in foil) Shrimp Tempura

I got takeout from Joy Sushi. It was ready pretty quick, which was very nice. It's a smaller location right next to the Target. Pricing was very competitive and slightly lower than many other places I've seen. The salmon on the Lion King was a bit firmer than I'm used to but it was still tasty.

I was looking for somewhere to grab a snack and came across Joy Sushi while shopping at Target. Decided to grab their Egg & Spam Musubi which was about $8 for two pieces. At first, I thought the service was slow and wondered what was taking them so long - I didn't realize that they were making it fresh! It was delicious and 100% worth the wait. Not sure what sauce it comes with but it's perfect for dipping and not overly sweet. I personally got take out but they also have a dine in section with a good amount of seating available. :)

Okay so first I want to thank joy sushi for trying to accommodate my medical inability to eat rice. They made my rolls without it for me, and I know it can be difficult to do. But they tried! And they were really sweet about it. Their service was some of the best I have had when it comes to my food restrictions. So it makes me sad when I say, the food looked bimb, but just was not good. My Lambada roll was so salty (the crab was salty) so I wasn't able to dip it soy sauce or it made it eye twitchingly saltier. My wife ordered two rolls. While one look amazing, it was just lacking in flavor. The other roll she had was deep fried with tempura batter. It was MASSIVE it size. But once she tried to pick it up, it literally looked like it deflated. It went flat and she had to use a plastic for (all that was available) to eat it. We purchased a canned soda from their cold case since the soda fountain was out of order, the soda still, wasn't very cold and we were handed small thin white plastic cups to pour our soda into to share. Again no ice since the fountain was broken. There was no music and they had maybe a total of 5 tables to use to dine so the one obnoxious family (not establishments fault) that was there, were sooo loud. It made even much more unenjoyable. I am sorry Joy Sushi, I wish this was a better experience. I almost feel bad, because you can see that they try really hard.

I've been a fan of Joy Sushi since first going to their San Mateo location back in 2011. They've always had good sized portions (rolls and entrees) and their prices can't be beat! When they opened a location at Bayfair Mall, I was ecstatic to see an affordable fast casual Japanese spot open in the area. It seems like the owner is a woman, and she runs the entire show. Kudos to her! It's not easy running a business in this area of San Leandro. I've been witness to a little riffraff here and there. All that aside, the food is consistently good the 2 times I've been here. The fish they use for sushi rolls is fresh, and I appreciate that they offer more than just your usual bento boxes and rolls. They also have Korean tteokkbokki among other options.

Great value and sushi tastes fresh as well! I ordered the shrimp tempura roll and loved it! Will go back again to try their other rolls. Friendly staff provided great service as well!

First time here and this place wasn't bad. I like it but I didn't get sushi. I went with the bento box with 2 sides. I had the fried rice, macaroni salad with chicken katsu and spicy chicken. First off, the spicy chicken was full of flavor which made me want more extra sides to it like maybe some veggies. Chicken katsu was crispy. My reaction from the crunch was ohhhh this is good! Way better than a Hawaiian bbq spot. Next time I need to try the sushi! Ohh and the cashier lady was very nice too. When eating in, I'm all about the service and the quality of the food. This place did not disappoint at all and I will be back!

We had an appetizer, two rolls, one regular salad and one seaweed salad - I particularly like the seaweed salad with the sesame seed oil you haven't had it, you should try it. The appetizer is great. You can see many pictures of it in the other reviews and enjoy the roles as well. Service was good. We came in at the end of their lunchtime, and they were pushing to get us served and out, maybe a little to much. It's a little bit of a hole in a wall, but a good one - give it a try if you're thinking about it.

Portions on the boxes were plentiful and the rolls were decent sized. Spent about 200 (including tip) on 8 people (each getting an item) not bad. Only problem was that I did put instructions on a couple items and they were overlooked (make spicy) so I went inside to get spicy mayo on the side. I could tell why they didn't answer - it was packed! The staff was doing a great job at pumping out orders for to-go and dine-in. Food was good. Service was food. The added .5 stars definitely has to be that they didn't forget an item.

MY FAVORITE SUSHI SPOT…read more I wish I could gatekeep but it's just too good! Amazing sushi, fresh fish with so many great options on the AYCE menu. The ratio of rice to fish for their nigiri is on point. You can actually enjoy the fish without getting full off rice. Their omakase box is delicious. For the AYCE sushi restaurant, it was good but not exactly mind-blowing. The fish and seafood variety didn't taste like the freshest quality, and after a while, a lot of the rolls started tasting the same. For around $45 AYCE, I personally think there are better options out there. Some of the skewers came out burnt. Takoyaki was 1/5, you can skip on taht. But that being said, the service was really good. The lady serving us was super friendly and attentive, and overall the staff was kind and welcoming. However, there was only one other table besides ours at the time, so I'm not sure how service would be during peak hours. Now the cafe side, I loved it. The vibe made me feel like I wasn't even in Hayward. The sandos were really good, and the matcha looked amazing. I'd definitely come back for the cafe experience alone. My biggest concern though is the elevator situation. It wasn't working during our visit, and I heard it hasn't been working for quite a while. It honestly made me wonder how elderly or mobility-impaired guests are supposed to dine there. That definitely seems like something that needs attention.

Since it was a birthday celebration we ordered agedashi tofu, gyoza, chirashi sushi, sake don, salmon lover roll, unagi hand roll, salmon skin hand roll, 2 - three item bento boxes (one with salmon teriyaki, chicken teriyaki and short ribs and the other with salmon teriyaki, sashimi and beef teriyaki. The service was attentive and everything was tasty and fresh. I enjoyed my salmon skin hand roll, my 3 item bento box with salmon teriyaki, 4 piece sashimi (2 tuna 2 salmon) and beef teriyaki. The sashimi was fresh and tender, however the beef was alittle chewy and not as tender as I expected. The complimentary birthday dessert was a tasty treat and we all shared. I really wouldn't call this place a Japanese restaurant, but rather a Japanese-Chinese fusion…read morerestaurant. If you go in with tempered expectations, you may have a better experience than I did going in assuming this was standard Japanese fare. We went with the black garlic ramen (spicy), the lamb, beef, and black pork skewers (three skewers each), potato skewers, green onion skewers, tuna nigiri, tamago nigiri, chicken karaage, and gyoza. The skewers all tasted the same due to the HEAVY amount of dry seasoning rubbed onto every skewer, which is the same spice rub regardless of the meat. The layer of spice is so thick that it falls off everywhere as you're eating it. They also used the same spice mix on the potatoes and in the ramen, making the entire meal incredibly one note in terms of flavor profile. The flavors also clashed with the garlic ramen. The spices tasted like what I've had before in the broth at malatang restaurants and was a poor match for Japanese food. The chicken karaage was actually super delicious, but was more like popcorn chicken than karaage. It was also served with honey mustard, which made it feel like a different dish entirely. The gyoza were fine, nothing to write home about, and the sushi was good. The tuna was fresh and the tamago had a bit of caramelization going on, which was different than other examples I've had of it and I liked it. If you ignore for a moment that you're in a Japanese restaurant and came for Japanese food, you might have a good time here. The meat skewers were cooked perfectly and delicious, the ramen was prepared very well (and pretty generous in size), and the fish was fresh. But the one-note Chinese flavors took me out of this meal entirely and it ultimately fell flat for me, though my husband really enjoyed his meal. While I'm not keen on returning, it at least made a fan out of him. Important thing to note about the menu, specifically the skewers: be careful about the pricing. The wording on the menu is, frankly, nonsensical, but what it's trying to say is that the skewers are one price if you order less than a particular number of them, and a different price if you order more than a certain number of them. We didn't figure this out until after we'd already placed our order and they'd started grilling the meat, but we ended up with a slightly bigger bill than we intended. We of course didn't argue -- as Judge Judy always says, we ate the steak -- but the vague, terrible language of that part of the menu left a bad taste in my mouth (no pun intended).
