Yes the soups are excellent but they're lying saying "home made." I saw an employee in the kitchen empty a huge bag of Hungarian Mushroom soup into the self serve pot. Obviously out sourced. I come here sometimes for lunch, specifically for the homemade soups. All of the ones I've tried have been delicious. I haven't tried the salad bar but there are a lot of options for toppings and dressings. There is also a great selection of prepared dishes and sides, produce, and baked goods. The prices overall are very reasonable. There's no seating inside but some tables outside. There's a lot of underutilized space in the store, presumably due to COVID. I didn't come in here before the pandemic, so I have no basis of comparison. It can get busy here during lunch time, but the lines tend to move quickly. Overall a good place to grab a cheap quick lunch if you're near Middleton. read more

I was at Essex Sports Complex and needed to grab a few things for dinner and decided to check out Farmer Browns. Super cute place and the people that work there were very nice. It is a small farm stand with a small amount of produce, but legit everything they had was good produce and about $2-$3 less than Stop and Shop and $1 less than Market Basket. The best find: Boars Head Meats! Normally I head to Stop and Shop but their prices have been insane. Farmer Browns was LEGIT $5 less per lb!!!! than at my Stop and Shop. Do yourself a favor and save some money and support a local business at the same time! Another great thing...lots of soups! They had about 10 soups and all looked delicious! I'm teetering between 1-2 stars. This used to be my go to for deli meats and sliced bread, along with snack mixes. I've never thought the salad bar was all that spectacular and the soups always seemed so greasy to me. That being said- after they finally reopened again- the deli is much smaller and hardly ever manned. You have to ring the little bell - wait for no one to come help- go find someone- wait some more - and then you will be helped. Today- the young man (totally devoid of smile or even acknowledgment) didn't listen at all to what I asked. Everything was sliced wrong- I left my items there and left. The ladies at least do a good job slicing when they help you. The place itself is always empty of stuff. You can't count on it for anything. Tons of wasted space that I have no idea what they are using it for. The cost of their sliced bread has gone up tremendously in the past two years. Used to be 2.99 and 3.59- now 5.59+ - and the loaves seems smaller. I won't buy those anymore. It's definitely not the same place it used to be. The outside is not maintained at all and does anyone else come out of there feeling like they smell bad? It's just not worth my time anymore read more

Only taking one star away because every since the new owners they do not take care of the exterior at all. There's a broken pedestal that holds up the front porch that they "fixed". The siding of the side of the building that faces the main traffic of the street is all falling off and not color matching. It was a beautiful building and land when they first built it, and despite the inside still being amazing, the outside is falling apart. And actually inside the used to have all fresh produce but the whole section is blocked off now. Anyways, inside is awesome. They have an amazing salad bar stocked 24/7, homemade chicken pot pies once a week that are sooooo good, a fully stocked deli bar by.... I forget the brand right now but they're very high quality and delicious, maybe Boars Head, they offer a soup station that has 9 different homemade soups that are made and restocked continuously throughout the day. They also have a candy and nut wall that are all prepackaged in those plastic deli tubs, tons of selection there. They have minimal deserts. Italian cookies, some brownies and cookies as well. A great selection of prepackaged breads as well as breads madd on site that are warm with that light crunchy outside that goes perfect with deli meats and soups! It's a great place to go to grab lunch and eat outside on their picnic tables as well. Note to self: do not review while hungry! read more

I haven't been to Farmer Brown's in years but I had very fond memories of their homemade foods. I visited on a quiet weekday and was surprised at how bare the shelves were. I hope they are not going out of business but part of the store was blocked off and many items that used to be available didn't seem to be sold anymore. They still have a good selection of produce, meats and a limited selection of home made food. I picked up a chicken soup that was really nice - in fact, their entire soup selection looked great with some unique flavors. You can no longer get your own soup but they had them available to go. I also picked up a twice baked cheddar potato which was not that great. Tasted very greasy once I made it at home. I still recommend them for their produce as the quality has always been amazing. Prices are very fair and the parking is fantastic - even if busy the lot is huge and you can find a space. I'll be returning soon for more soup! read more

I was told that Farmer Browns used to be bigger or have more stuff, but I only know about it since the summer of 2023, and I fell in love with their salad bar, soups, and bread pudding. It is a smallish place with awesome food. While it is true that their store is not stocked to the brim, what they do offer is super. I love their bread pudding too. I was so disappointed with my recent visit. I went a little later in the day (530pm) on a weekday. They were cleaning up, ready to close. As far as I'm concerned, you're not closed until you're closed. So when I asked for cheese at the deli and the response is "our cheese slicer is already cleaned for the night," it's irritating. What's even worse is she offered to slice the cheese on the meat slicer and said she did it for the guy before me. As someone with a dairy allergy, this is a bit aggravating. Now I know for certain that I can't eat deli meat from this location. Good thing this purchase was for my husband! Let's move on to the breads... all of them labeled "Our Own Italian" or "Our Own French" or "Our Own...." You get the idea... None of them have ingredients listed. Because I know some breads include milk, I decided to ask the kitchen staff. Response? "Well, we don't make it here so I don't know the ingredients." What do you mean, you don't make it here? It clearly states "our own.." "Yes, we bake it here, but the dough is brought in from outside." That's not "our own" in my opinion! So, no bread in the cart. On to the soups.... They all look delicious. Again, no ingredients listed, so I ask which have dairy. I receive a response with minimal confidence (including a chowder that looked very full of dairy). When I questioned it, the gentleman said, "hmm, yea... maybe avoid the chowder. That may have been lost in translation." Needless to say, if you have any food allergies, you should stay clear of this place. It's obviously not a concern of theirs at all. Pretty displeasing to say the least! We used to stop in here quite a bit pre-covid. Loved the salad bar and soups. I understand why salad bar was closed due to covid protocols. We heard bar was back open so we gave it a go on a Tues at noon. Well, salad bar has cut way back on available items and things did not seem as fresh. But the biggest down side was the filthy tables outside. There were also no trash barrels outside so people left empty salad and soup bowls on tables. Several tables even had bird droppings on them. Have to update my review of Farmer Brown's since they have replaced most of the staff. It is unfortunate since this used to be one of my favorite places for soup. The soup I had yesterday (chicken corn chowder) was awful. This used to be one of my favorites and now it is just not good. First time back since they re-opened. Not sure what happened to Farmer Brown's after they re-opened, but the quality has changed. The potato salad which was my favorite looked odd, with seeds in it. They now add stone ground mustard. The deli person gave me a sample, I did not care for it. They also proceeded to tell me it is made canned potatoes. No wonder why it looked watery also. Purchased the sun dried tomato dip which we always bought there and enjoyed. Brought it home and it is not the cheese spread it was before, as one Yelper said the dips are thinner now. The produce section was almost bare, lots of empty self space. Seems the quality has gone done since the "new staff" has been brought in. Always sad to see an establishment that you enjoy take a wrong turn. We will not be return customers. read more

This place has gone down hill, it used to be amazing, it had closed down for a bit for unknown reason, had heard it was an issue with employee and pay but I am not sure, seemed when they reopened they must have lost several workers. Huge local produce section with lots of variety including: kale, fresh herbs, carrots, berries, apples, and seasonal produce. The prices aren't too far off from grocery stores, and even cheaper for certain items (like Kale which was $.50 cheaper than Market Basket at $1.15/lb). There are lots of organic items as well. They have a huge refrigerated section of homemade/packaged sauces, dips, appetizers, and entrees. This section is much pricier at an average of $4-$8 per item, depending on what you're getting. Everything looked fresh and well-stocked though. I am intrigued by their "Award-Winning Salad Bar," which looked plentiful and fresh with 3-4 types of lettuce, TONS of toppings (20+ I would say), and lots of homemade dressings. Parking is easy and right in front of the building and there are always parking spots every time I've gone. Ah, yes, the classic children's singalong has a new lease on life! Farmer Brown's is my 30-something vision of the idyllic rolling hills and dreamy pastures in storybooks, only better. Immediately upon entering I felt that I hadn't prepared mentally. I thought that this place would be too bourgeoisie for my wallet, what with farm-to-table produce and a salad bar you could bring Home to your mother. I was astonished when I saw the prices. Gadzooks! How could farm grown lettuce be under two dollars? How could cheese be under five? My husband giddily walked ahead to peek at the massive selection of nuts and chocolate delights. I begged him to wait for me so we could get experience this Nirvana together. At one point, unbeknownst to me, he snapped a photo of me smiling lovingly at the "good" olive oils. I threw those quotes in there for you Ina Garten fans... I know you're out there. Off we went with our cart filled with meats, cheeses, baked goods, milk and artisanal items we'd picked up along the way. We checked out and went home to bask in the glory of our newfound gem. a nice farm stand store. the salad bar was good & they have a pretty good variety of yummy stuff like soups and slices of cakes & prepacked baby carrots etc-- perfect for a quick to-go meal. staff are nice and quick & there's tons of easy and accessible parking. i wish they had more selection of fruits and veggies but what they have looks good overall. i'll give them the 5 stars from a 4.5 rounding up to 5 bc there's a bit of room for improvement still. substantial. also the prices are very reasonable especially looking at the salad bar compared to like whole foods read more

I'm not sure what's going on at Farmer Browns. I visited today and found that most of the store had bare shelves. There were no items in the frozen cases, little in the refrigerator section and the shelf area that used to have a great selection of canned and jar foods is bare. Also I was upset when I returned home and found the produce I purchased (zucchini and garlic) had already turned. Are they going out of business ? Being right down the street from work, we're in here at least twice a week if not more. The soups are AMAZING. Seriously. During the warmer months, they run 8 different soups daily but during the fall and winter months, I think it's around 14. I haven't had one that I didn't like. Their salad bar...so fresh! Large variety of homemade soups (I think 8), some vegan/veggie-friendly and some GF. The corn chowder was amazing - it wasn't too heavy but was very hearty, with a variety of veggies, chunks of potatoes, and tons of flavor! They offer multiple sauces if you want to spice up your soup, and adding cheese or grabbing a packet of crackers is free. I opted to purchase a mini French bread stick. Soup, a water, and the bread came to like $6. Oh! And the soup spoons are the best ever! The bowl part is really deep! read more

Used to be my "go to" place for deli. A while back before Covid they were having trouble finding employees. I'm not going into why here. This meant that they only had 1 person helping at the deli counter instead of 2. To help reduce the line wait, the manager decided to get rid of a lot of the deli items that people only ordered small amounts of(1/4 lb). As a result, you now have a very limited deli selection that doesn't even have Pepperoni. How the heck can you run a deli and not carry such a basic item? As a result of this I no longer shop here at all. Not because I'm mad or anything. I don't shop here because I no longer come here for deli. I've even gone to Stop & Shop and paid 20% more but at least I can get what I want. Oh, because I'm not in here, I'm not buying other things I used to buy such as their pre-made soups/stews, chicken, baguette or portugeuse rolls. The stuff is good but not worth an extra stop when I can get most of it elsewhere. I used to spend $30-$40 here every Sunday. Farmer Brown's kept me well fed when I worked in the area. I'm not much of a 'farmer's market' kind of guy, but this place is really just a grocery store that carries higher quality products. Oh yeah, they have this spendiforous salad bar. I'm a guy, I don't get worked up over salads. A steak, a pizza, a beer, a hefty sandwich, yeah, my pants might get tight. A salad? Not so much. That was until I started making treks to FB's. Quick disclaimer - the salad bar is EXPENSIVE. But eff that, it's the most justifiable $12-$20 salad I could ever purchase. I'm serious about that. The salad bar is overflowing with fresh awesomeness. Words do it no justice. Just go and indulge (and good luck finishing it!). Ok, so maybe salads aren't your thing. No biggie, the soups and stews are unreal. Chili? Hell yes. Chowders? I love you. Italian Wedding? I'm the best man. Want something bigger? The rotisserie chicken they have is so good it will make you slap yo mama. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it. I could go on (and I would), but here are the best bets... - Salad bar, anything you want on it. Try the Parmesan peppercorn dressing. - Chicken salad from the deli. Grab that and the bread from the salad bar. Put them together. Enjoy. - Roasted Chicken and Corn Chowder. This is so good it should only be legal in 49 states (Sorry Tennessee!). - Italian Wedding. I often wonder about this place. You know, the usual type of musings: what is that appetizing smell wafting through the air as you walk in, why aren't they located closer to my house, and when are they going to open earlier than 10am on any given day. All those things aside, this place is kind of like Trader Joe's with a deli and no booze. They have fresh produce, a fair amount of locally produced items like produce and dairy products, and a surprising amount of otherwise-hard-to-find Mexican, Spanish, and Italian delights. But the piece de resistance is the Beef Noodle Soup. I mean... that's what this review is really all about, if I'm honest. That and the fact that they carry George's Bakery spinach and feta flatbread. Two of the most delightfully concocted foods on earth, both sold at this establishment. The soup is made in-house, along with a variety of others that I haven't yet been tempted to try because the Beef Noodle is just too good. I would have sworn up and down that, before I tried it, it would have needed at least a twist of fresh ground pepper and a good helping of salt to be palatable. Thank goodness I tasted it before adding anything. As Colin Firth said to whatshername in "Bridget Jones Diary," the Beef Noodle is perfect just the way it is. read more

Farmer Browns is a favorite stop of mine whenever I'm in the Middleton area. From the rustic, unimpressive exterior, you may have passed it by many times without thinking twice. From the moment you walk in the door, the various sights and smells carry you through the interior with delight. You are first greeted with the fresh displays of vegetables and fruits which I believe most, if not all, are grown locally. As you make your way through the produce, you come across several aisles of spices, oils, pastas and other eclectic delights of brands not found in typical grocery stores. Local dairy is also another plus! There is a vat of fresh honey that you can self-pour to your hearts content. As you make your way down that aisle, you come to the deli where they have an amazing selection of excellent quality Boars Head deli meats, cheeses, prepared salads and dips. The dips are usually what get me craving a trip to Farmer Browns. The bacon with horseradish and gouda and their bean dip are my absolute favorites. Unfortunately they have a huge tray of dip and salsa samples across from the deli. Delicious! I only leave with a small container of each because there is danger in those delicious dips! Then you pass the aisles of freshly made rotisserie chickens, their famous chicken pies and warm, toasty brown apple pies. You'll walk around what seems like a rotary of the best salad bar I have ever seen. Be careful of what you put in that salad, the price can get high but the quality of the food they offer is outstanding! Just around the salad bar is a soup and chili bar. They always have about 1/2 dozen different types of hot soup. I love opening every lid to explore the scents and decide which soup best suits me that day. The store is immaculately clean, the staff is friendly and I would definitely recommend stopping by...again and again. There were some areas of the store that looked a little sparse today and I was concerned there might be a closing announcement soon to follow. I would be crushed! Here is an update to the few people who have gotten confused as to whether Farmer Brown's is a farm stand or actually a farmers market - it's neither. It was a real farm stand about a billion years ago but no one has made reference to that. They stock locally grown favorites during the regional growing season, that's about it. They used to have hydroponic tomatoes grown off season but I don't think they do that anymore. The salad and soup bar is awesome. The rest is just an upscale yuppie produce market/deli. read more

Discovered this little gem the other today, and pretty happy I did ! Its like a Farm Stand Grocery Store. You may have passed by it plenty of times, but you need to stop in because it is great ! Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, Meats, Cheeses, Pre Packed Meals, 8 Hot Soups, and a Salad Bar. Soup selection is awesome, and it changes daily. Possibly one of the biggest Salad Bars I have seen, and the selections are pretty sweet. Everything is fresh, and I am pretty sure locally grown. I got a salad from the bar, bread, cookie the size of my face, and a drink all for $11 ! Can't beat it, it was more than enough food, and super yummy ! New Zealand apples, Washington pears, Pennsylvania nectarines, the only thing that was advertised as local was corn and eggs. I love this place. I have been here once, but it was so delicious. I made my own salad at the salad bar. Of course, it's summer, so the veggies are good, but they were so good. The tomatoes were sweet. They have huge selection at the salad bar and you can really get carried away (I did). This is a good spot............for fresh made soups (8 selections every day), salad bar, roasted chickens, flowers, produce, deli, meats, candy and more. It has really grown through the years with renovations improving the spaciousness, shopping experience and along with that somehow the food even got better. I think first FB's is knows for the soup bar. It is busy hot or cold outside year round. With always Italian Wedding, Chicken Orzo, Clam Chowder and Chili. I have had all but the last. Each one was very good and amazingly hot after a 20 minute ride back to work. Because my staff just takes 30 minutes for lunch....the boss get's to fly. The salad bar is super fresh with a great selection of the typical greens yet with a variety of options such as stuffed grape leave, roaster peppers, various salad type toppings ...tuna, chicken etc. Salad by the pound ....who cares. Lastly the produce is fresh as it should be, the deli prices fair and the pre-cooked chickens wonderful.
