I've been a customer of Evan's since it opened in its original location. I live in Seattle now and I long for Evan's pastrami knishes, his fresh homemade chopped liver and bagels with a generous shmear. Evan's is spotless and even when I pass through during the summer even at its busiest time Evan's staff is courteous and does their best to make the orders right and quickly. Evan's place is a part of a dying breed and for this ex Boston/Long Island it's worth a trip whenever I'm in the area. read more

Not impressed. The initial impression is one of a tired, old sub shop with cases of salads that appear to be mayo with bits in them. Place is very barebones. All of that would be ok if the food was worth it: it's not. Pastrami is tough and too wet; bread was stale. My friend asked for her sandwich to be toasted: didn't happen. The fries were good but they were served in a giant paper bag that looked used. The large pickle was barely sour. The service was fine and the bathroom was clean. There was a continuous line of patrons so maybe I was missing something? Likely not worth a second visit. read more

Evan's tuna has been a staple in our household for years; Not much mayonnaise . All his food is prepared lovingly whether it's white fish salad, stuffed cabbage, or his knishes, they all should please the mensch in your household. Sandwiches are not cheap but Evan heaps on about 1/2 lb of meat. Personally, I love the turkey Reuben P Ordered a bagel and fish platter from Evan for a neighbor's funeral and once again, Evan delivered. Lots of lox, white fish salad with cheese, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and capers; everything plus silverware and plates in addition to different cream cheeses- everything necessary to turn a funeral into an almost happy event. As I continue to find passable NYC deli in the wilds of New England I have made my way to Swampscott and Evan's Deli. I know that there is a good size Jewish community in the area and was hoping for a decent quality nosh. My devotion to Katz's, Zabars and Yonah Schimmel's are deep and part of my DNA. I do my best to tepid my expectations against these giants of gastronomy. Walking in I was a little disappointed not to see an old woman in a black shawl or a man wielding a large knife slicing away at a large fresh pastrami, yet there my disappointment ended. I ordered a few staples, pastrami on rye with deli, a pastrami knish, a small scoop of chicken liver pate and a green tomato. The sandwich was very good, warm moist and a generous amount of meat. This is an excellent sandwich. I would have preferred a bit more of the mustard and was not a huge fan of the bread (which did hold up nicely to the moist meat). The tomato was meh, did not have the zing or the crunch I really like but was a nice treat not seen too often around here. The chicken liver was very good, could have used a dash more salt but the flavor was fresh and not cloying great The standout however was the knish. This is not a traditional knish wrapped in a heavy covering. The pastry was light, layered and was a new experience for me. It was a treat and will be a go to in the future. My only complaint is that I did not get any napkins or utensils and had to scoop the chicken using the top of the container to eat it. But this is a small quibble on an otherwise enjoyable little meal. Oh, and I personally like my sandwiches cut in half, so I will remember to ask them to do that next time. The owner is the best part of the whole place. He isn't like alot of people around here with +misplaced+ snobbery and a blatant pollyanna presence. He has a true ny attitude which is the..."what you see is what you get ". I think people here are so used to being lied to, they actually search for it and get disappointed when they don't find it. I've been in the business for over 10 years I am beyond aware of how this is supposed to go...for starters when I'm ordering STOP ASKING ANYTHING ELSE AND INTERRUPTING ME. If you stop talking.. Then I can place my order. Then I ask for avocado and sprouts and your response is that "it's not a California place". Get some class. We wait 10 minutes for our food- when I look in the bag there aren't any pickles- the owner, when taking my order.. Hastily claimed that every Sandwhich comes with a pickle.. So where are my pickles and the extra pickle I asked for- We drove 15 minutes home opened our sandwiches to find my boyfriends Sandwhich had plain cream cheese only on it instead of the lox chive cream cheese and tomato- we DROVE BACK to get the proper order- weren't refunded at all (I get it were still eating the food)- Get home once again and I open my Rachael- it's a measly $7.50 half of a Sandwhich with barely any cole slaw on it.. Not to mention there was NO CHEESE. My bread was soggy and the corned beef had no salty flavor to it. I had to eat it with a fork and knife. I would have thrown it out but I just spent my money on it and spent half of an hour driving back and forth to get it correct. Every time I've gone in this spot it's uncomfortable because of the condescending attitude the owner has. I will never step foot in here again. Was really excited to try this place after all the hype and recs. We got a pastrami knish (haven't tried yet), a half corned beef Rachel and the Eugene (which is like a thanksgiving leftover sandwich. The corned beef Rachel was just plain, no Cole slaw or Swiss. And it was teeny tiny (see pic). The Eugene was delicious would highly recommend that! All in all it was underwhelming for a place meant to be known for their corned beef. read more

I work locally and always stop by for a sandwich, chips, and a drink. It usually comes to around 10 dollars. The sandwich is HUGE. I don't know why everyone is complaining about the sizes, sometimes I wish they would put less in mine because it always spills out. Also, their pickles are delicious! As for the service, all of the staff have been really polite every time I go in. Sometimes they do forget something, but I always check before I leave and they fix it if I let them know the order was missing something. Overall, its a great place to stop in for lunch! read more

I keep trying because I like the hot pastrami sandwich, but am fed up with the terrible customer service. I'll not go back again. On my last visit there was only one customer there, eating a sandwich by the window. I walked up the counter and waited four minutes--which seemed like an eternity--while a blond employee named Liz, I think, played with a child out on the floor--and played and played and played. She never acknowledged me when I came in and only went behind the counter to take my order when I began to leave. To make matters worse, she put the child, with dirty white pants from playing on the floor and sneakers, right up on the counter and continued to play with her. Hygienic it wasn't; I'm sure the health department wouldn't approve of someone sitting on a counter where food is served. Owner Evan always seems cranky and unpleasant. I have found that the owner is not pleasant to deal with. On occasion, I have found his comments about his competitors to be less than professional. His hard salami when I got it recently was not very good in my opinion. Evan is fulfilling a need for a kosher style deli so I will give him credit for that but I think he is missing an opportunity with the more observant Jewish people in Marblehead by not having a kosher section. As a result, people that want that have to go either to Peabody or Brookline. A shame read more

Never written a bad review before today, but this place is a joke! The owner was a complete prick to both me and my girlfriend along with several other people in line. Told me "it's not a California deli" when I asked for sprouts. I ordered a bagel with scallion lox spread and tomato, got all the way home to find a bagel with plane creme cheese, no tomato, nothing of substance, not my idea of lunch. My girlfriend ordered a Ruben, they forgot the cheese. By the time we drove back, I was completely over it, seemed like a giant waste of time and money for food that was mediocre at best. My girlfriends sandwich was soggy with very little coleslaw, my bagel had hardly any salmon in the spread. Skip the stop, save your money and head downtown. read more

I noticed unflattering pictures and reviews from Gina P. So I took a look at her reviews. It ends up that not only is she a horrible photographer but her taste in food is the same. So if you consider donuts beer and tacos quality food then you should listen to her review. But if you want quality New York deli then this is the place for you. And yes you get what you pay for. I don't know where they get off but the owner directly trashes other local business in front of customers. Try being a tad professional. This isn't Katz's Deli but yet they want to charge Manhattan prices for mediocre food at best. Also, the dollar extra up charge to split a sandwich with someone is tacky and cheap. This isn't a sit down restaurant where if we are splitting an entree while taking up the table and server's time. It's a sandwich that already comes sliced regardless. Tiny portions, with soggy bread and a few slices of pastrami shouldn't cost $13 to split with your girlfriend. Evan, are you on vacation? Have you changed vendors? Does anyone clean the bathrooms? I've been going to Evan's for years when I had a craving for a Rachel or to grab a batch of chicken broth. Until about a year ago, I haven't been disappointed. What happened? I have to look away as the staff blows their noses, rubs theirs eyes, takes your cash and plunges into your sandwich. I couldn't help hearing a conversation behind the counter comparing how sick they were. Not appetizing. I ran to the ladies room a few days ago while I waited for the Rachel. Oh. My. Let's just say one might do better at a gas station. Disgusting. Should have run out the door after that. Final straw was the quality of the corned beef. Tough, chewy and dry. Took about 10 minutes of chomping each bite to swallow. Something has gone horribly wrong. I hate to write Evan's off but my last visit made me ill. I can't even give you one star, but had to to post this review. I was so so disappointed. Imagine, ordered a corned beef sandwich to go. They microwaved the sandwich!! Horrible, stringy, rubbery, brown and so little meat. The chopped liver I also got was tasteless. What a waste of money and I will NEVER go back there again. How they could even call it a new york style deli is outrageous. In April, I had a corned beef sandwich in NYC at Carnage Deli. Like day and night. It is what it is, and I won't ever be back!! I've been here before and the sandwich I got was excellent and the service was friendly. Today was a different experience though. The guy behind the counter was salty and unaccommodating. He was hard to understand so responding to his questions was difficult. When we finally got to the end of our order I handed him the credit card I was holding the entire time and he says "we're cash only". This is a change because previously they took plastic but today no such luck. If it's because their machine is down he could have said "I'm sorry our machine is down we can only take cash". Instead he just sent me on my way. Maybe dealing with a crusty old guy who talks like he has a mouth full of marbles is part of the charm for this place. Was in area for business and stopped in to grab a quick lunch. Had the Eugene (Turkey, Stuffing & Cranberry) it was stacked with meat and flavor.
