I first read about FancyFree when I was researching trivia options in Brooklyn. I have yet to do trivia here, but I stopped in to grab a drink with a friend this afternoon. I ordered the turmeric mule, and it was sooo good. I noticed a few folks at the bar had ordered it as well. My friend also spotted an order of fries nearby and those were good as well. I came for happy hour on a Monday evening, but ran late. However my friend enjoyed happy hour. The ambiance is great at FancyFree, the bartender was very attentive. This cheerful, hi-ceiling and huge-windowed sports bar/neighborhood hang is gonna become your f-a-v-o-r-i-t-e low-key hangout spot. I know this because a friend and I crashed their soft opening last night, no one got mad at us, and we had a lovely time :D My friend, recently moved here from London during pandemic, said that the vibe at FancyFree is a really good example WHY he chose New York City as his new home. There's a warmth that is particularly ours--where everyone is a neighbor and everyone (as long as they walk fast enough on the sidewalk lol) is welcome. Nowhere is that felt more than at a Brooklyn local such as this one--the kind of place that feels right, right from the start. Backstory: neighbors in Fort Greene will remember beloved Mullane's Bar & Grill, a super chill, sweet sports bar where one went to catch the game and scarf some homey, delicious pub food, in order to relax for a minute. It was a spot that felt like home. When Mullane's closed during the pandemic, Fort Greene took a hit. Friends, it is WORK to be hugely fabulous 100% percent of the time so a place where everyone knows your name (Cheers! Hello!) but also isn't suburban Connecticut (love CT, no shade!) is very necessary. FancyFree, run by Jason, Tai and Daniel, is that place. (BTW: J & T own Endswell, a French-American bistro on Fulton, next to Provisions. They really like the neighborhood and see this second spot as way to deepen their ties here.) Some things to know: these guys are superrrrrrrrr nice and friendly so if you are looking for an anonymous, aloof vibe, keep walking. You will not find that here. It's a sports bar so there are huge flat screens everywhere. I'm fairly certain they will be plugged into ALL SPORTS so if you are a FIFA head or a cricket fiend message them on IG/call to learn if they stream those matches. Fort Greene goes nuts during FIFA, as everyone knows! I'm hoping that they might bring in some board games, too, because who says it doesn't take a certain sort of athleticism to play Shutes & Ladders??! FancyFree has tons of beer (duh) and full bar with several signature drinks. I wouldn't expect anything with dry ice or smoked wood chips but if you wanted a mezcal negroni or an elegant martini (Daniel is also the Beverage Guy and is a genius!) you may have one or several, while you go mental cheering your team. For the moment, their tightly edited menu (because of COVID, I'd imagine) is firmly anchored in sports bar fare--chicken wings, burgers, nachos, meatballs--but with lighter options, too, like entirely vegan nachos, a homemade veggie burger, and a salad sub for their hand cut fries. Jason said they're learning what people want and how they want it, so I expect the menu might evolve to include seasonal things, too. There's some outdoor café seating and a lovely enclosed patio area off to the side, for those who want a FancyFree vibe minus the sports. Those folks can soak in the Fort Greene's juiciness, preferring to people watch, work on that novel, or have a proper chat. Fun fact, FF is shares a wall with Spike Lee's 40 acres and a Mule building so that crew was there last night, along with Mr. Mookie, himself. You can bet that my London friend was starstruck but thankfully kept his chill and waited until we left to take a kajillion pictures of Cero's Mookie mosaic before we went our separate ways. He has already mapped his Citibike ride from the Lower Eastside :D. read more

I love that this place has outdoor seating, plenty of brunch options (including vegetarian and vegan ones!) and a variety of drinks. Wouldn't mind coming here again. However, the food was definitely not very special. At our table were: the crispy Brussels sprouts, which were tasty but cut too large to pop in your mouth; the fried chicken sandwich which was apparently tasty, but too also too big to fit in one's mouth; the chilaquiles, which were okay in flavor but in a weirdly thick sauce; the Buffalo cauliflower bites, which honestly were delicious; and the vegan nachos, which were mostly dry and needed about twice as much veggie-and-"cheese" topping to moisten them. The micheladas and bloody marys were good. Would definitely visit again for good conversation with friends over a boozy brunch... but this is not the food I will be dreaming about during the week. read more

Dropped in for a drink and some food on a hot summer day. I had a Pilsner while my fiancée had a cocktail. The draft list was decent. For food, I had the fish and chips. It came with four different dipping sauces plus steak fries in old bay seasoning. I'm not typically a fan of steak fries but these came out perfect. Crispy, just slightly beefy, and flavorful. The fried fish was good too. My fiancée had the fried chicken sandwich which I took a Fred Flintstone sized bite of. It was good too. I'm confident any of the items what have been solid given the consistency of our food. read more

Okay, I was gonna give this spot 3 or 4 stars because we came by while an event was happening and the kitchen was allocating all of their time to that, so waited over an hour for food and decided to grab our check and cancel our order. Five stars for our girl DEB! She was exceptionally hospitable and helped us out with our check and we have come back because of her. She turned a crap experience into a positive one. GO DEB! I walked past this spot many times in my neighborhood and really curious to try it. I went with a couple friends and I have to admit none of us were particularly impressed. The fish and chips were a paltry amount of fish and a handful of the saltiest fries I've ever eaten. The chicken sandwich was flavorless. One of my mates said, "This is little more than a fancy Applebee's," and I'll leave you to judge the veracity of that. Drinks were fine, nothing to write home about for better or for worse. I think this place makes sense as a spot to visit with buddies for some beers if you want somewhere that is visually appealing, spacious, and has plenty of TVs for games. All in all, though, it's not a place I'd eagerly return to for anything beyond a pint. read more

Stopped in for a quick drink and bite before a Nets game and was pleasantly greeted by the best bar/wait stuff in the neighborhood. Drinks were creative and reasonably priced, food was elevated bar fare that was equally easy on the wallet, and the place was packed too. It would seem that with a full house and extremely attentive staff this place has got it dialed in from the jump. 10/10 all around - I'll certainly be heading back to FancyFree soon when I have more time to spare. Went to trivia at FancyFree on Wednesday night. It was a quiet crowd before the holidays. I was pretty happy with the food and drink items we had, but felt the vibe and the space were off. A perfectly fine bar, but nothing about it screams you need to come back. Quality: Went to trivia night at FancyFree and enjoyed both drinks and food before the holiday. It is a relatively new bar, which has some good things going for it, but has yet to figure out what it wants to be. During our visit I enjoyed a Chipotle Margarita, a hazy IPA, and an Espresso Martini. All decent drinks, with the Chipotle Margarita the best of the bunch. I was also pretty happy with the food items. The Fried Pickles were solid, with good proportions of pickle to batter. I was also impressed by the Wings, I tried both the Tangy BBQ Wings and the Sweet Chili Wings, and enjoyed both. The weak point was the Fish & Chips, and not because of the quality, but the size. Two tiny cubes of fish were not cutting it for the price. Quantity: No issues with any of the drinks size or strength. I felt the appetizer food options were plentiful, but felt the Fish & Chips needed more fish. Value: $8 for Draft Beers. $12 for Cocktails. $6 for the Fried Pickles. $12 for the Wings. $18 for the Fish & Chips. Ambiance: FancyFree is located in the Fort Green area of Brooklyn. In this cove of bars and restaurants, FancyFree takes up a large corner lot. Outside they have a natural square patio. However, they have not put up heaters or tents to make it a usable section for winter. Part of the reason is likely the large indoor space. The bar stretches way back with a standard bar area in the front, and a more sit down table section in the back. This allowed the bar to split into folks watching basketball in one section and playing trivia in the other. What the space lacks is any personality. It is not an old enough space to coast off classic bar vibes, and the decor looks like stuff left behind from the bar before. With fairly generic food and drink options, the question will be why come here rather than somewhere else. Crowd: Even with trivia the bar was fairly empty on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. Service: It was honestly incredible how quick they were with drinks. I also appreciate how frequently the waitresses would make rounds of the spacious bar. Parking: Decent street parking in this residential area of Brooklyn. read more

Great Happy Hour deals M-F 3-7p! The $8 margarita was tasty and strong, and you can't beat $4 fried pickles and $6 elote "ribs" (corn). As for dinner, the fish tacos ($13) was decent, but the fish wasn't very crispy despite being beer-battered fried fish. The fried chicken sandwich ($13) was great. The chicken was tender; I think it must have been dark meat, which I love, and it was so crispy on the outside. read more

Mullane's closed down so I figured I give this place a try last Saturday afternoon. The basil mojito isn't really a mojito....no mint, no lime, barely tasted the basil. The A&W old fashion was tasty. The chicken and waffles were okay. The meat was tender, but the waffle was a bit dry. The wings weren't bad. Lots of sauce and pretty hefty in portion size. The Mac and cheese was gross. Barely any cheese, no salt, no flavor and they had the nerve to put breadcrumbs on top. The waiter was awesome. I didn't get his name, but he was awesome. read more

Came here on a Friday night with some friends. They have tons of outdoor seating options and a large indoor area too. Our waitress was super nice and very attentive. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the food was prepared, because I had expected typical bar food but it was definitely a step up quality wise. The wings were awesome, very crispy on the outside, plenty of meat on the inside and great flavor. Chicken sandwich too was very well done, and I love their fried. Awesome new neighborhood pub! 4/5 stars because a neighborhood bar's draft beers should not start at $8 if you really want people to frequent the place often. That said, the wine is $10 and the food, which is elevated much more so than standard pub fare, is reasonably priced and delicious. Excellent eloté (the standout), delicious and huge wings, and unique nachos are what we will keep coming back for. Perfect outdoor area for people watching in the heart of Fort Greene. Me and my boyfriend have been dying to try this new bar that popped up in our neighborhood. We've passed it a few times and their drinks look amazing, but we decided to order take out from here last night. I am a die hard fried pickles fan so I knew right away that's what I was ordering. The pickles themselves were nice dill pickles and still had a crunch and only $6. My only pet peeve would be the breading. I like my pickles fries with cornmeal and these were flour fried, which was still good, but some of the pickles didn't get that crispy because of it. It was served with some buttermilk ranch which was good. The burger and fries though definitely a bang for your buck. Decently priced at $13 for a combo compared to the normal $20 burger combo in this neighborhood. The burger came with cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and some kind of special sauce. The onion was a little big , so once I picked it out it was perfect. Very flavorful and juicy. Definitely excited to go dine in and try their other bar food. read more

I love Endswell and was so excited to hear the owners + Daniel were opening up a second bar/restaurant around the corner. The atmosphere is so chill and it's on a beautifully sunny block with tons of outdoor space to suit your fancy! The menu is a bit more elevated than your typical bar fare which fits the Fort Greene vibe while still being affordable. Jason, Thai, and Daniel make everyone feel welcome and I don't think anyone leaves a stranger. Love these guys and the new spot! read more

This is a fantastic, slightly upscale, neighborhood sports bar/restaurant. Great food, great for groups or just watching the game at the bar. More upscale than a run-of-the-mill sports bar, but easygoing enough to stop by for a beer and wings (which are awesome). Probably the most incompetent and disappointing bar visit I've had in the neighborhood in at least a decade. Stopped by on a hot evening after BAM for a drink. It wasn't crowded, but still hard to get attention of a staff member who just wanted to talk to friends to see if we order from the bar or table service. Then no waiter came. Finally went up to the bar and ordered two froses, which seemed perfect for a summer's night -- terrible. Friend and I both were disappointed.
