My mom and her Zeta Amicae sisters held an event here on Sunday April 19th and it was an overall blast! Great food, great drinks and even greater company. Crystal is the SUPERSTAR of the bar and handled taking orders for an event of 70+ people with as much swiftness and expertise that can be expected of a pro. My one thorn (out of this very beautiful rose) is that the event itself was understaffed. Many people weren't being served unless they ordered at the bar (and these were people with mobility issues). Also only 2 bartenders and 1 server bringing out food for people for an event that's 70+ is just a lot for staff to handle by themselves and can cause understandable frustrations. Even thought it took awhile to order, once food and drinks were inputted they came out pretty quickly. I had some of the buffalo chicken wings with fries and the wings were BOMB.COM! I also heard the burger was pretty good and I was able to get a bite of someone's pretzel which was super pillowy and warm. the Like I said, overall it was great time with a staff of people dedicated to making sure it stayed that way read more

Service was honestly the worst I've ever seen for any American restaurant in probably a decade. 1) we initially ordered soup dumplings but they were out so we accepted chicken/corn dumpling. Brought out shrimp dumplings instead, then when we brought it up to them they said that we wrong. Check out the photo, that's shrimp. One of our kids has a mild shrimp allergy so this was an issue. We didn't eat it and they didn't take off the bill. Meanwhile charged us for soup dumplings which were $4 more than the chicken/corn. Either way, didn't eat them and didn't remove from bill. 2) their website clearly states happy hour ($6 pretzel, $7 beers) on Saturdays (see pic) and then when we get our bill pretzel was $9 and beers $11. 3) laziest wait staff ever. On their phone the whole time. My wife went 20 minutes without a drink and asked for silverware multiple times. She ended up giving up and going to another table to grab some and the waiter just nodded. Good beer selection (which is why we went), but holy cow, the wait staff is the single worst I've ever seen. We came here for the $30 three-course Restaurant Week dinner. It was incredible, and an incredible bargain. The food was outstanding and the service was perfect. The only thing we didn't like was the noise level -- it's a large, high-ceilinged space and it was loud. Other than that it was perfect. Oh, the neighborhood (Gowanus) is a bit strange -- if you drive it's all good, but if you'll need to walk to the subway after dinner, it might get a bit dicey. read more

A large group of us stopped by here on a Sunday night after a friend's funeral. It was also fairly close to closing, which I know can be stressful to a restaurant. We came in second place-- since the first place winners passed on the winning prize, we got the beers! Sadly, a few of the beers on the list weren't even available. Double dip by coming the hours between 4-7 pm for happy hour beers at $6. We ordered shrimp and beet salmon for appetizers and they were delicious. The delicious beet salmon was my favorite as the potato pancakes on the bottom was cooked to perfection. For entrees curry bratwurst and beer bined brisket. The portion size is generous for its restaurant deal. The brisket was not too flavorful so I would skip it next time. Dessert was only two options - chocolate cake and rice pudding. Skip the cake and go for the rice pudding. Service was quick, love the outdoor seating area. We've been here many times now. Tried out something new tonight, the Restaurant Week 3-course $30 menu. Got the Aquavit Shrimp to start, Beer brined brisket for the entree and chocolate olive oil cake for dessert. We ate all but the dessert (as we were too full), which we'll enjoy at home later tonight. Both courses we ate were ample and delicious. UPDATE: Ate the chocolate cake at home -- sooo good! The entire meal was a Home Run! The main downside of this place for me remains the same: There's no sound absorption, so it gets really noisy if there's a boisterous table or two. Tonight, there was a table with a bunch of kids and the adults weren't doing anything to manage the decibels generated by their charges. The waitress couldn't even hear us order. Perhaps adding cloth cushions to the seats and backs of the booths would be a good start. Could also do some floating panels near the ceiling (black fabric to blend in)...any sound absorption would help. This suggestion is personal, so maybe others won't agree, but it bugs me that there is no sparkling wine option on their wine list. I mentioned this in an earlier review. Those of us who don't like beer would like a cava or Prosecco option in the summer. It would be particularly nice to have a nice dry, non-dosage (no sugar added at the end of the fermentation process) option and there's a great reasonably priced one called Sauvage that would be perfect if it's available to them. And with that sparkling wine, I would love to have moules frîtes, so would be excited if they added that seafood menu to the option. Easy to cook, healthy and delicious! I also think it's a miss -- in terms of revenue generation for them -- that they have a full bar but no cocktail list. Since their focus is beer, I don't think people (especially those who've only sat in the outdoor area; we often do, but it was too hot tonight) necessarily even know that they offer cocktails. They're near the Gowanus in an up-and-coming pocket of the neighborhood...they should dream up a few new, fun crave-worthy signature cocktails and note on the menu that people are also welcome to order classics. ***WAIT!! Directly after I typed that part, we heard someone at the bar shaking a cocktail and he informed us that THEY DO HAVE A COCKTAIL LIST COMING out in the next couple of weeks! He seemed super knowledgeable, so we are looking forward to coming back to sample his creations. Bottom line: We love having this place nearby, a solid addition to the neighborhood drinking and dining scene. Our standard go-to, the Taphouse Burger -- soft pretzel roll, thick bacon, Lafrieda blend burger, onions -- can't be beat and the crispy fries are excellent too. I'm extremely disappointed with how our event on 4/13 turned out--it was a complete disaster. I had been in contact with Vanessa for weeks leading up to the date to make sure everything would go smoothly. I wanted everything to be perfect for my wife's surprise celebration, but unfortunately, it was the opposite. We reserved the window table section. My party arrived before me to set up and surprise my wife, but when they got there, they found a group of about 40 people already occupying the space. That group was being rude--not only to my guests but also to the bartenders. My sister-in-law tried to get help and was told she could move the party to the outside patio--which made no sense at all on a rainy, cold day. When I arrived and saw the situation, I immediately asked to speak to a manager. Shockingly, one of the staff told me there was no manager present, which I found really unprofessional given the size of the crowd. He directed me to the bartenders, who were very kind and confirmed that the window section was in fact reserved for my group. I let them know I was going to politely ask the other group to remove their food and belongings so my guests could use the space--and I did just that. However, the other party decided we were going to "share" the space, and the tone they used made it clear this wasn't going to be a respectful situation. The whole vibe was off. The music was just some random rock playlist--not mixed like I was told it would be--and the bar was packed with people who weren't even part of my event. Everything felt completely unorganized and borderline hostile. With our reserved area taken over, the atmosphere uncomfortable, and staff unable to manage the situation properly, we made the difficult choice to leave early to avoid a larger issue. That should've never had to happen. We had put so much into planning this celebration, and it was ruined. I doubt we'll ever return to this bar, and I definitely wouldn't recommend it to anyone planning a special event. read more

Came here on a weekend afternoon. The food was quite good, but we waited at least 45 minutes to an hour before it came out. When we started noticing tables that arrived after us were getting their food before us, we had to ask the waitress to check in. So the problem was a slow kitchen and/or inattentive staff. They said something about someone being trained in the kitchen or whatever but I don't really buy it, one of our orders was a burger and someone that came in 20 minutes after us got theirs first. Went last night for their grand opening with the kitchen officially open! We didn't sign up for the opening, but they hostess was so so kind and accommodating, finding us a table quickly. I don't know our waitresses name but she was great and on top of it despite how busy they were. Honesty they were such a well oiled machine I kept forgetting this was their first day open with the kitchen. It was very impressive how on top of it everyone was including the bus boys and food runners. It is a little tight around the bar especially near the kitchen, but the space does feel big and airy with the high ceilings. They have about 5-6 tables outside as well. In terms of food, overall the menu is very German driven it seems with some unique touches. We ordered the pretzel, spetzle mac & cheese, sliders and fries. The brie cheese that comes with the pretzel is soooo good and unique. The mac & cheese was also really good esp because I love caramelized onions. Fries were quite solid. My only complaint would be the sliders. Given they were brisket sliders, I though the meat would be more pulled apart or more meat, but it felt more like a steak sandwich slider. There was a little square of meat which was hard to bite, one piece of lettuce and the dijon mayo. The bread of the sliders themselves took over everything you could barely find the meat! Wouldn't recommend those. Drink selection was very good and seemed to have a lot of local beer like Evil Twin, Threes Brewing and Talea. Excited to come back and try more!!! read more

I had a party of about 25 people at Evalyn's and it was not what I expected. The person who books the party does not seem to communicate well with the rest of the staff and was not present at the time of the party. I was told we would have a space reserved and we could play a Spotify playlist during the night. We arrived 25 minutes before the party was set to start and there were no reserved tables. I was told that we would need to wait until 7 to ask people to move so if you want to come a bit early to decorate it is not possible. They did not tell us that there were two parties happening at the same time so while they did play my playlist they alternated with the other party. There were no 'reserved' signs on any of the tables even after our start time and we were told to guard our spaces. We ordered multiple platters and asked if the food could come out as it was ready. They said they could not do that and brought out all the food for both my party and the other party at the same time. People from the other party came over to our tables to take food and when we complained we were told we need to watch our tables. Over all the workers tried but the whole thing was unorganized. If you want anything more out of your party than a bar hangout, go elsewhere. read more

This review is regarding Saturday April 12th, I was the one in constant communication with Vanessa for over a month regarding my birthday party via the free party promotion. I would like to say it was not the other guests fault, as they were promised the same space I was for their parties. People were getting nasty because there was no manager, no coordinator, no one present to help organize these 3 "small" parties all booked for the same night. The person responding to the reviews was not there that night, and doesn't know how it actually happened. Everyone else had to deal with the madness themselves, including the bartenders who tried their best. One bartender even stated that this happens almost every weekend and they would sick of dealing with it, and provided me and my friends phone numbers to someone in charge, because clearly that person is never there in person to see the craziness they allow to go on. It's upsetting because literally nothing was provided that was asked for, and I got told if I wanted my music playlist that I sent in the week of the event to play I should have asked the manager? Who is the manager? Like I said no one from management was present at any time. I appreciate the free shot for my troubles, the bartenders honestly looked overwhelmed and my friends and I still tipped them for their service. Instead of blaming the other patrons and the bartenders, maybe you should realize that it's an extremely small space and even booking three "20 people" parties at the same time is entirely too much, especially with other people using the space from outside as well. read more
